The Diplomat season 3 ending explained: who stole the Poseidon?

by jummy84 October 16, 2025

Keri Russell returns as US ambassador Kate Wyler in the third season of The Diplomat, only this time with some new responsibilities.

Created by Deborah Cahn, the political thriller picks up in the aftermath of season two, as Grace Penn takes over as president. Meanwhile, Kate’s husband Hal is now vice president, leaving Kate to scramble between life as an ambassador and the second lady.

Rufus Sewell, Allison Janney, David Gyasi, Ali Ahn, Ato Essandoh and Rory Kinnear all return for season three. Newcomers to the cast include Bradley Whitfield and Aidan Turner.

All eight episodes of season three were released on Netflix on October 16, 2025.

In the final episode, US president Grace Penn attempts to convince UK prime minister Nicol Trowbridge that the Russian submarine submerged 12 miles off the UK’s coast actually houses a nuclear weapon called Poseidon. Nicol is coordinating with China to help remove the submarine, but as Grace explains, this is effectively handing them a nuclear weapon. Instead, she wants the UK prime minister to cooperate with the US in its retrieval.

Nicol leaves the meeting unconvinced that Poseidon actually exists. However, Kate Wyler convinces her British spy lover Callum, who knows the Poseidon is real, to tell Nicol about his sources, a move which would cost him his career. Kate’s husband, vice president Hal, however, refuses to let Kate and Callum go ahead with this proposal – which leads them to form an alternative, far riskier, plan with the president.

To convince Nicol, Kate suggests to Grace that they should send a US submarine to take pictures of the Russian submarine to prove Poseidon is real. As Grace explains, without permission from the prime minister, entering British territorial waters could be seen as an act of war, so it’s a risky proposition. After Kate makes her pitch, she leaves Hal and Grace to ruminate on the idea, before they eventually give it the green light.

Sometime later, Grace presents the photos to Nicol, and while he’s more convinced of Poseidon’s existence, he doesn’t trust the US after they went behind his back to retrieve the information. Nicol refuses to cooperate with the US, but under Hal’s encouragement, Kate intervenes and tells Nicol that no nation – whether China, the UK, US, or Russia – should have Poseidon, so he should bury it under the sea. Nicol, trusting Kate, agrees.

While it appears as if everything has been settled, Callum informs Kate that Russia has seemingly already stolen the Poseidon. Kate quickly informs her husband, but a chat with Grace’s husband Todd, about the close relationship between Hal and Grace of late that he’s become envious of, makes Kate realise what’s actually happening. Russia hasn’t stolen the weapon at all, it was actually the US, in a secret plan concocted by Hal and Grace behind closed doors.

Kate confronts Hal about her suspicions. “You used me to sell a lie to the prime minister,” she remarks. “When the Brits find out, they will consider this an act of war. So will the Russians.”

After Hal demands Kate stay quiet about the plot, he joins Grace for a photo opportunity on the steps. In the final scene, we see Hal remark to Grace about a problem; specifically that Kate knows about their secret. The episode ends on an unsettling note with a potential war on the horizon, and with Kate not knowing who she can trust.

Will The Diplomat return for a season 4?

The Netflix show was renewed for a fourth season back in May. No release date has been announced, but based on the rollout of prior seasons, it will likely arrive in 2026.

Stephen Colbert’s Cameo Explained and More Changes

by jummy84 October 13, 2025
written by jummy84

[Warning: The following contains MAJOR spoilers for the Elsbeth Season 3 premiere, “Yes, And…”]

Stephen Colbert guest-starred as a parody of himself in the Elsbeth Season 3 premiere, but his prescient line, “We’re going to miss this show when it’s gone,” was written before his real-life late-night show was canceled by CBS this summer. That cancellation came one week before Colbert was set to film his Elsbeth episode, which reunited him onscreen with his Strangers With Candy costar and longtime friend, Amy Sedaris, as well as Andy Richter and Lindsay Mendez (who will be back throughout Season 3).

“Yes, And…” revealed that Elsbeth Tascioni (Carrie Preston) spent some time with her romantic fling, Angus (Ioan Gruffudd), and was still friends with Sheryl (Marcia DeBonis) from Season 2. Sheryl’s new book was the reason Elsbeth was on the set of Way Late With Scotty Bristol before Bristol (Colbert) was murdered.

Elsbeth used the improv skills she learned from Sedaris’s Laurel to solve the case. Laurel was revealed to be the killer of the week in the opening scene, but Elsbeth is breaking form in Season 3. Not every murderer will be revealed when the episodes begin.

The Elsbeth Season 3 premiere also gave an update on Kaya (Carra Patterson), who’s unable to get in contact with Elsbeth because she’s on an undercover mission. Here, Elsbeth showrunner Jonathan Tolins breaks down the premiere, Colbert’s appearance post-Late Show cancellation, what to expect with returning and new characters, and more.

What is Elsbeth’s biggest internal struggle this season?

Jonathan Tolins: She is dealing with Kaya not being around because Kaya has gone on undercover assignments and has gone off. She says she wants to cultivate her friendships a bit more this season. Those new friendships lead to some thorny questions for her about honesty and truth, and what is most important to her.

Carrie told us that Crawford [Michael Emerson] is an emotional burden on Elsbeth after she witnessed his murder.

We will be meeting someone from Crawford’s world who will make an appearance that will have an effect on Elsbeth this season.

Crawford was a major villain for Season 2, with a long arc. Will this character connected to him have a similar arc length?

No, I think this season, we do have some longer arcs and some new characters who have longer arcs, but we’re not doing a big new villain. We didn’t want to feel like we were repeating ourselves in any way, so it’s a little different this year.

How else are you breaking form in Season 3?

Well, we’re doing a lot of episodes that don’t adhere to the strict Columbo form of seeing the murder and then Elsbeth figuring it out. There are some episodes where you don’t see the murder, some episodes where you have no idea who did it for a while, which we’ve done once or twice before in the past. And also we’re finding fun structural ways to bring the case into Elsbeth’s orbit that’s not the typical, the police call, and we go to the crime scene, and we try to figure it out.

Michael Parmelee / CBS

Could you expand on that?

I just finished editing an episode where the murder, you see the whole murder story start, you see the murder, and then we just go to Elsbeth in her life at an event, and you think you’re in a totally different story. And then the murderer walks in, and Elsbeth meets him, and something he says sort of leads her to the case. Things like that. We like to keep our audience guessing.

That murderer is not very slick.

Well, he has no idea that this woman he’s meeting under perfectly reasonable circumstances works with the NYPD.

You wrote the premiere with Colbert in mind for the role of Scotty Bristol, correct?

Yes. What happened was, Wendell Pierce was a guest on Colbert’s show, and Colbert joked about how he really wanted to be a corpse on Elsbeth, and I think someone was there from CBS who immediately let Amy Reisenbach, who was the president of CBS, know that. Amy texted me immediately, like, “We’ve got to get Colbert on the show.” I’m a huge Strangers With Candy fan, and I wanted to get as much of Stephen as possible. To have him have a big part, we had to work out exactly how much time he would be able to give us due to his schedule.

Once I had the basic parameters, we put together a story that felt fun and that would be right for him, and also that would play a little bit on the audience’s understanding of who he is anyway. That’s why we made him a talk show host and all that. It was a real thrill for me. We cast Amy Sedaris in it, which I was well aware of their long history because, as I said, I’m a Strangers With Candy fanatic.

What was your reaction to Colbert’s cancellation, given that the news came out one week before he was set to start filming on your show?

Well, I was shocked and appalled, but then I immediately selfishly started thinking, Oh God, is he going to back out of doing the show? But then I realized he probably wouldn’t back out because he seemed very enthusiastic. And also, he would be working with his old friend, Amy. It’s not my department, but I think it’s terrible that his show is ending.

How was he on set? It was literally just days later.

He was a total delight, a total professional, just warm as can be. He was everything I wanted him to be. It was a great day.

There’s a line in this episode where he says, “We’re going to miss this show when it’s gone.” I was taken aback by how prescient it was.

I know. I felt the same way. That line was always in the script before. I’m very happy with the fact that the episode sort of resonates with what happened, but is not in any way a direct comment on what happened. I did not rewrite the script to reflect what was happening in the news that week. This was the story that we broke before we shot the episode, and then before all that happened.

Amy Sedaris as Laurel Hammond-Muntz, Lindsay Mendez as Officer Grace Hackett, Carrie Preston as Elsbeth Tascioni, Andy Richter as Mickey Muntz, Wendell Pierce as Captain Wagner, and Danny Mastrogiorgio as Detective Smullen in 'Elsbeth' Season 3 Episode 1

Mark Schafer / CBS

We talked a bit about how Elsbeth is struggling without Kaya there, but how is the Elsbeth-Wagner relationship evolving in Kaya’s absence?

I always say that they have a Lou and Mary kind of relationship, for those of you old enough to remember The Mary Tyler Moore Show. There’s such a genuine warmth between the characters and the actors. And also, there’s a really nice understanding now between the characters at this point. We’ve had 30 episodes where Elsbeth turned out to be right in the end. And so we didn’t want to keep having Captain Wagner say, “What are you doing? You’ve got to play by the book.” So we find lots of variations on where tension comes between them. And a lot of times they’re a team, a really fun team.

We have some new stuff coming up for Captain Wagner’s family and personal life, and we didn’t decide to create some big new conflict between Elsbeth and Wagner because we’ve done that. We had the first season end in a very difficult time between the two of them, and then they came back together again. We don’t like to repeat ourselves. And so I would say it’s just the relationship gets deeper and deeper as we go between them.

It seems kind of easy between them now. They just gel together.

And in the first episode that you saw, she is able to challenge him in a way that you wouldn’t have in the past about how [Lieutenant Steve] Connor [Daniel K. Isaac] is being treated in the precinct.

We hear mention of Kaya in the first episode, and we get an update on her undercover work. It’s been revealed that Kaya comes back in Episode 3. How often can fans expect to see or get updates on Kaya this season?

I’m not being cagey. A lot of it depends on scheduling and people’s lives and how the story goes. All I’ll say is, we love the character of Kaya. We love the relationship between Elsbeth and Kaya, and we love Carra Patterson, so we’re going to keep trying to get her as often as we can. That’s what I’ll say.

But we are also introducing fun new characters. We have a new uniformed officer in the premiere, played by Lindsay Mendez, who’s wonderful as Grace Hackett, and she’ll be back a number of times. We have some of the people that we introduced last year. We’re going to be introducing a new detective later on this season, so we mix it up.

One of the things about our show is that in order to get all these huge, incredible guest stars, we don’t have a huge cast of regulars. So I would say one kind of frustration of my job is that we work with these wonderful actors who everybody wants, and sometimes we can’t get them when we want them. So we have to be flexible and work it out as best we can. But I think we’ve done a good job of creating this stable of wonderful characters that we want to see. But we only have 43 minutes and a murder mystery and all these things. So I can’t make promises all the time about when you’re going to see who you want to see, but just know that we want to see them too.

‘After the Hunt’ Writer Nora Garrett: Ending Explained, and Changes

by jummy84 October 11, 2025
written by jummy84

[Editor’s note: The following interview contains spoilers for “After the Hunt,” including its ending.]

Over the course of nearly two hours, Julia Roberts’ character in Luca Guadagnino’s “After the Hunt” really goes through it. When the film, written by first-time screenwriter Nora Garrett, first opens, Roberts’ Yale philosophy professor Alma Imhoff is mostly concerned with a looming decision regarding her tenure at the Ivy League institution. Everything else in her life? It seems sort of great.

And then. As the film unspools, it simultaneously unravels nearly every element of Alma’s life. After a boozy evening at Alma’s, one of her favorite students (Ayo Edibiri as Maggie) accuses one of Alma’s favorite co-workers (Andrew Garfield as Hank) of a heinous crime. As we learn more about Alma’s own background, we watch her react toward both Maggie and Hank (and even her own husband, played by Michael Stuhlbarg) in increasingly alarming ways. Her health suffers. Her work suffers. She crumbles. And when Maggie, distraught over the ways in which her accusations have been weaponized against her, goes to Rolling Stone for a no-holds-barred interview that puts Alma in the crosshairs.

Jafar Panahi and Martin Scorsese

Well, for a little bit. The immediate aftermath of the publication of the interview sees Alma (who has already been denied her tenure, due to her stealing a fellow professor’s prescription pad to procure pain meds, oopsie) surrounded by angry Yale students, stressing her to the point she collapses. She ends up in the hospital, where she reveals the truth of both her ravaged health and a past love affair to her baffled husband, Frederik.

That would be a fine enough place to end the story, and in Garrett’s original screenplay, the final pages only extended that misery. In the draft of the screenplay she first sold to Imagine Entertainment before it landed on Guadagnino’s desk, Frederik actually leaves Alma, who resigns from Yale and then travels home to Sweden.

There, in the original script, she attempts to reconnect with the mother of her father’s deceased best friend (whom Alma had, by her own telling, a life-altering love affair with when she was just a young teenager). After the affair (or, let’s be clear, the abusive relationship) ended, a heartbroken Alma told everyone the man abused her, and even though she later told people she was lying. It eventually led to his suicide. But Alma has never gotten over the man, and considers him the great love of her life. His mother does not show up.

Alma also visits her aging parents and tearfully tells them about said great love affair. Her mom’s advice? No one ever gets over anything. How’s that for Swedish stoicism? Later, Alma returns home to New Haven, and testifies in support of Maggie. C’est fin.

But in Guadagnino’s final film, none of that happens. Frederik doesn’t leave Alma. She doesn’t resign from Yale. She doesn’t go home to Sweden. And she sure as hell doesn’t testify for Maggie. Instead, after we see Alma in the hospital, the film jumps ahead five years, only to find that Alma, once the subject of mass derision (on campus and on the internet) is now the dean of Yale.

“So, when Luca first attached, he basically said, ‘OK, I love everything about this film except for the last 20 pages,’” Garrett told IndieWire during a recent interview. “And so, it was immediately right out in the open that he wanted the ending to shift. Partially, because when you think about the reality of how life works, Luca is very intentional and also very committed to truth and reality and verisimilitude.”

The way the director saw it, Garrett said, was that someone like Alma would never just give up, give in, roll over, and run away.

“The idea that someone like Alma, who had been searching her whole life for this, clawing her way towards this, making so many internal sacrifices for this thing, would give it up so easily, felt false to Luca,” Garrett said. “It felt like a very constructed character turn, as opposed to a holistic one. Looking at the world that we have … it’s really hard to let go of your identity, and it’s really hard to let go of everything that’s been bulwarking that identity, just because someone else tells you you have to. He felt like Alma was more of a fighter than that. And so, that’s how we began sort of reconstructing the ending of the film.”

It’s not just that Alma has risen to the highest echelons at Yale, but we also catch up with her on a day in which she’s seeing Maggie for the first time in many years. The pair meet for lunch at the same Indian buffet where we earlier saw Alma and Hank having a fraught interaction. Both women have changed — not just in terms of their careers, but their sartorial choices, which used to be very aligned, all natty blazers and button-up shirts — and they seem happy to see each other, if guarded about the whole thing. Maggie is surprised to hear that Alma is still with Frederik, and Alma marvels over Maggie’s giant engagement ring.

Still, Maggie is clear: She spent a long time waiting to see Alma really taken down a peg. And while that ending existed in Garrett’s original screenplay, it’s just not the case in the final film. Some people don’t get punished for their misdeeds, and they certainly don’t learn from their mistakes.

“I think we’re all being careful not to offer some sort of polemic to people,” the writer said. “But I do feel like, to me, that ending scene feels very much like, ‘Ah, right.’ That is sort of what happens sometimes. Maggie says to Alma, ‘I spent so long wishing for you to fail,’ and I think that the truth of life is that these things we think are going to be seismic and dramatic, they can be internally, but sometimes there’s not quite the one-to-one ratio of retribution that we think is going to be there.”

Amazon/MGM releases “After the Hunt” in limited theaters on Friday, October 10 with a wide release to follow on Friday, October 17.

‘The Rainmaker’ Interview: Episode 9 Explained

by jummy84 October 11, 2025
written by jummy84

[Warning: The following post contains spoilers for The Rainmaker Episode 9.]

We’re in the homestretch of The Rainmaker now. The penultimate episode of the USA Network drama finally brought the big case into the courtroom, and of course, nothing went to plan for Rudy Baylor (Milo Callaghan). There was at least one promising — albeit highly unexpected — development by the end, though, and things did wrap up as well as could be expected for Bruiser (Lana Parrilla) and her father.

The episode began with Rudy and Deck (P.J. Byrne), now separated from Bruiser’s firm, arguing the case against Leo Drummond (John Slattery). Things quickly went off the rails when Rudy decided to scrap his opening statement mid-sentence and instead deliver his true theory of the case — even if it did invite a motion for dismissal of the entire case from Drummond.

To support his assertion that the hospital covered up having a serial killer nurse on staff, Rudy called the elusive Jackie Lemanczyk (Gemma-Leah Devereux) to the stand. As much of a triumph as her very presence was, though, her initial testimony was for naught because her evidence about Melvin Pritcher’s (Dan Fogler) use of the medication dispensation machine was illegally obtained and, thus, inadmissible. Leo, meanwhile, painted the prosecution as simply seeking a villain after a self-inflicted tragedy.

After Rudy and Deck tried to scramble to sign the other victims of Pritcher’s as a Hail Mary to save the case, they found they were once again a step behind Sarah Plankmore (Madison Iseman), who’d already contracted them for silence. Making matters worse, Dot’s (Karen Bryson) testimony, while emotional, also allowed Drummond to paint her son as a habitual liar whose sobriety at the time of his death was very much still in question.

Bruiser, who had to grapple with the feds offering her a deal to help entrap her father, came up with a new plan: Put Jackie back on the stand to testify about the Narpans machine. At first, the plan was a success; Jackie successfully revealed that the machine didn’t erase data, like the defense insisted, and she also suggested Melvin’s behavior around Donny Ray Black was antithetical to usual nursing practices. However, Sarah, who’d already fully crossed the rubicon, was called upon to deploy the firm’s so-called “Nuts and Sl*ts” routine to discredit Jackie by making her seem mentally unstable.

Christopher Barr / USA Network

When Brad (Wade Briggs) objected to Leo making Sarah second chair over him and reminded his boss that he knew where the bodies were buried, Leo smarted back that he wasn’t actually the one who buried them. (“Relax, Brad, you’re still useful as a backup singer, but that girl’s a star,” he said for added effect. Ouch.)

Elsewhere in the episode, Bruiser finally confronted her father, and he insisted, “I’ve done a lot of things, but I didn’t kill that woman. I shouldn’t have to tell you that.” Later, she finally learned the truth about what happened to the young mother Rosalie, who was a whistleblower, and as it turned out, Bruiser’s dad really didn’t kill her. It was just a misunderstanding that led to her death at the hands of one of their associates.

Before he and Prince (Tommie Earl Jenkins) took off to evade arrest, he had one parting gift: Tied up in Prince’s basement was none other than Melvin Pritcher.

So what will happen next? Well, Dan Fogler teased, “He leaves bread crumbs. He lets himself get caught, and then you see him in the basement with, who? … They might team up and use, use some of Melvin’s knowledge to catch the real bad guy. That’s all I’m gonna say.”

As for the absolution Bruiser got about her father, series creator Michael Seitzman said of the development, “Bruiser… wants the truth. Everything with Bruiser is about honesty. ‘First, I want to know the truth, and I want the people close to me to be honest with me.’ … She’s had two problems with her father: One is that he’s been dishonest with her, both by literally lying to her and also lying by omission…. and the other problem she’s been having with her father is that she’s wondering, ‘Did he do something terrible? He did something bad, but he didn’t commit murder, right?’ And so what I think she’s feeling there is relief that he finally told her the truth, which is, in their love language, the truth is, I love you. That’s what she’s been waiting for.

But I think also, she’s feeling relief that he’s not the monster.”

The Hijab Controversy Surrounding Deepika Padukone’s Latest Ad Explained – But Fans Are Already Defending Her! | Glamsham.com

Bollywood’s favourite power couple Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh are back in the spotlight, this time not for a movie, but for their latest campaign with Visit Abu Dhabi. Called “Mera Sukoon”, the stylishly filmed video sees the couple discover the peaceful scenery, vibrant culture, and symbolic landmarks of Abu Dhabi, and celebrate love, peace, and togetherness.

The clip picked up speed online — not just for its imagery but also for a specific scene that caused reaction. Deepika is spotted wearing a hijab while paying a visit to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in one such moment. The actress received widespread acclaim from fans for being so graceful and culturally aware. Social media was filled with comments such as “She looks stunning in a hijab,” and “Their show of respect for Arab culture makes me like her even more,”.

But the same scene had also incited outrage among a section of users, who accused her of disrespecting Hindu customs. Posts like “Boycott Deepika,” and “She’s double-faced,” started trending, with some demanding a boycott of her films.

In turn, the actress’s supporters reminded the critics that donning an abaya or hijab is a dress code required at the mosque — one in which all female guests, of any religion, comply. One of them noted, “Even Rihanna covered up when she went. It has nothing to do with religion, only respect.” Another chimed in, “She has never disrespectfully approached Hindu temples. Why pick on her now?”

In spite of the digital divide, most comments were favorable, praising Deepika for her cultural sensitivity and demeanor.

The ad also brings Deepika and Ranveer together in their first professional project post-Singham Again, making it all the more special for their fans. Shot in the deserts, museums, and landmarks of Abu Dhabi, the campaign has already gone viral — winning hearts and creating buzz.

Is Taylor Swift’s ‘Cancelled’ About Blake Lively? Lyrics Explained – Hollywood Life

Taylor Swift released her 12th studio album on October 3, 2025, and Swifties immediately commenced their normal detective work in breaking down all the songs’ lyrics. From her collab with Sabrina Carpenter to other tracks like “Father Figure,” there’s one hit from The Life of A Showgirl that fans are buzzing about: “Cancelled.” Its lyrics point to a story about a friend who was apparently “cancelled” through a scandal, leading fans to assume the song is about Blake Lively and her legal dispute with Justin Baldoni.

Here, Hollywood Life breaks down the lyrics of “Cancelled” and the song’s meaning.

Are Taylor Swift & Blake Lively Still Friends?

The last time that Taylor and Blake were spotted out together was in 2024. Earlier this year, People reported that the actress and the pop singer weren’t speaking and that their friendship “halted.”

Taylor is the godmother of Blake and Ryan Reynolds‘ daughters.

Is ‘Cancelled’ About Blake Lively? Lyrics Explained

Taylor has not confirmed whether she wrote “Cancelled” about Blake, but Swifties think the lyrics point to the Gossip Girl alum.

In the pre-chorus of the track, Taylor asks if a friend “girl bossed” too much, seemingly nodding to a woman who was accused of acting too bossy.

“Did you girlboss too close to the sun? / Did they catch you having far too much fun?” Taylor sings in the pre-chorus. “Come with me, when they see us, they’ll run / Something wicked this way comes.”

In the chorus of the track, Taylor sings, “Good thing I like my friends cancelled / I like ’em cloaked in Gucci and in scandal / Like my whiskey sour / And poison thorny flowers / Welcome to my underworld / Where it gets quite dark / At least you know exactly who your friends are / They’re the ones with matching scars.”

In the past, Taylor has sung about being cancelled herself. Case in point: her hit single “Look What You Made Me Do.”

Is Taylor Swift Part of Blake Lively’s Lawsuit Against Justin Baldoni?

In May 2025, Justin’s legal team subpoenaed Taylor Swift in his lengthy court battle against Blake over their It Ends With Us feud. Despite crafting the song “My Tears Ricochet” for the film, Taylor was not directly involved in the production, her rep said.

“Taylor Swift never set foot on the set of this movie, she was not involved in any casting or creative decisions, she did not score the film, she never saw an edit or made any notes on the film, she did not even see It Ends With Us until weeks after its public release, and was traveling around the globe during 2023 and 2024 headlining the biggest tour in history,” the rep said, per People.

Justin’s legal team dropped their subpoena against Taylor shortly thereafter.

Swifties also believe “Forever Winter,” in which she expresses concern for a close friend’s well-being, is about Lang.

Should’ve kissed you anyway (Anyway)
And it was not (It was not) convenient (Convenient), no
Would’ve been the best mistake
Should’ve kissed you anyway, hey

Refrain

Don’t make it awkward in second period
Might piss your ex off, lately we’ve been good
Staying friends is safe, doesn’t mean you should
Don’t make it awkward in second period
Might piss your ex off, lately we’ve been good
Staying friends is safe, doesn’t mean you should

Bridge

When I left school, I lost track of you
Abigail called me with the bad news
Goodbye, and we’ll never know why
It was not an invitation
But I flew home anyway
With so much left to say
It was not convenient, no
But I whispered at the grave
“Should’ve kissed you anyway”

Chorus

Oh, and it was not (It was not) an invitation (An invitation)
Should’ve kissed you anyway (Anyway)
Should’ve kissed you anyway (Anyway), anyway

Post-chorus

And it was not—
My advice is to always ruin the friendship
Better that than regret it for all time
Should’ve kissed you anyway
And my advice is to always answer the question
Better that than to ask it all your life
Should’ve kissed you anyway
Should’ve kissed you anyway

The Charli XCX and Taylor Swift Beef Rumors, Explained

Online, fans immediately began speculating that the song is about Taylor Swift, largely due to the lyrics, “Don’t wanna see her backstage at my boyfriend’s show. / Fingers crossed behind my back, I hope they break up quick,” which appear to be a reference to Swift’s headline-making relationship with The 1975 frontman Matty Healy. Charli recently wed Healy’s bandmate, drummer George Daniel.

Though “I hope they break up quick” is not a flattering lyric, the rest of the song is fairly innocuous—a peek behind the curtain at Charli’s anxiety-riddled mind. Later she would explain that the song “is about me and my feelings and my anxiety and the way my brain creates narratives and stories in my head when I feel insecure and how I don’t want to be in those situations physically when I feel self-doubt.”

The Matty Healy of it all

Days after the release of Brat on June 7, 2024, the model Gabriette—who also happens to be a close friend and former bandmate of Charli—shared a photo of an engagement ring from The 1975 frontman Matty Healy. “MARRYING THE 1975 IS VERY BRAT,” Gabriette wrote in green text over a photo of her black diamond ring.

Healy’s mother later confirmed the engagement during an appearance on the British talk show Loose Women.

Healy, of course, is largely believed to be the titular villain of Swift’s 2024 album, The Tortured Poets Department, which was released in April of 2024. Swift and Healy’s short-lived affair was the hottest story of spring-summer 2023, spun as a rebound relationship following Swift’s breakup with the British actor Joe Alwyn. It is believed that Gabriette and Healy began dating shortly after his breakup from Swift.

Given Charli’s “I hope they break up” lyric and the fact that Healy moved on with one of her dear friends, Swifties were left with a sour taste in their mouths following the engagement announcement. However, there’s no evidence of any foul play on Charli’s, Healy’s, or Gabriette’s part.

Charli shuts down anti-Taylor chants at her shows: “I will not tolerate it.”

On June 23, Charli condemned a video of some of her Brazilian fans chanting “Death to Taylor” in Portuguese at one of her shows.
