Ruston Kelly’s Out-of-Body Experience – SPIN

by jummy84 September 29, 2025
written by jummy84

Ruston Kelly was in the middle of a years-long existential crisis when he left his own body and watched himself sitting at his piano.

An astral projection.

He was sober, clean from drugs for a few years.

An apparition approached him while he floated. It was Jesus. As the figure came closer to Kelly, the musician felt a sense of calm wash over him.

“I understood a sense of, it wasn’t bliss, and it wasn’t even joy, it was complete equanimity,” he says during a video call from his home in Nashville. “There was a oneness to what had been, what is now, what would come.”

Then, when Kelly came to, he realized he had been crying, his hands raised while he sat on the piano bench. And he knew he wasn’t alone anymore, that whatever he was going through was over.

“There wasn’t really a call to be anything other than a student again, but a student of my own spirit in relation to knowing that I belong to someone,” he says. “I mean, that changed everything.”

Kelly swears to me he isn’t a religious man, at least not in the traditional sense. He’s not a member of any branch of Christianity, nor does he necessarily want to be. “When we start talking about these things—especially when it comes to public-facing lines of work—speaking about God and speaking about religion seem to be synonymous, but I didn’t have a religious experience,” he says. “I had an experience that was just my experience. That’s the only way I can put it.”

Over a multiyear period, Kelly, despite releasing three albums—Dying Star (2018), Shape & Destroy (2020), and The Weakness (2023)—felt like he had lost his voice. You’d never know it by listening to him sing during that time. But to him,  he experienced an immense loss between the physical and spiritual link that comes with singing, a sort of voice dissociation. “I did not feel a connection to my main form of artistic expression,” he says. “I couldn’t sing with a fluency that seemed to have always come from a natural ability to express my soul.”

He couldn’t sleep. He broke down in tears. He begged and prayed to whatever higher power there was to get his musical gifts back. “I felt that I was being punished for all the ways that I had abused something that was important and freely given,” he says, referring to earlier days of drug addiction.

His new album, Pale, Through the Window, is about that experience.

Kelly approached writing this album, released September 12, differently than his previous records.

“I was really getting frustrated with having this incredible experience, and not being able to funnel it into a creative conjecture about what it was,” he says. “I wasn’t able to pull from that thread that I always pulled from. I kept trying, and it just seemed like everything came out trite, and this was anything but a trite situation. I knew I was going to have to write from a different muscle.”

Kelly says that his songwriting technique for Pale, Through the Window became less about the discipline and craft of songwriting, less about metaphors and abstraction, and more about telling a simple, straightforward story. He didn’t start writing until two weeks prior to pre-production. He had faith that the words would come. And they did, more easily than they ever had before.

“I was assaulted by the inspiration for what the album was and knew that it was going to be very simply about this spiritual experience and about falling in love on the heels of that.”

Kelly’s referring to his current girlfriend, Tia Cubelic, whom he met while on vacation to Pawleys Island, South Carolina, in 2024, where their first date was a game of pickleball, inspiring the album’s track of the same name.

But the 37-year-old wasn’t always destined to be a singer-songwriter.

Before becoming an Americana, or “emo-dirt” musician, as he describes his genre of music, Kelly was a junior Olympian and seven-time state champion figure skater.

From the time he was 8 years old until he was 15, Kelly was steeped in the deeply competitive, and in his words, toxic world of figure skating. With his parents’ permission, he moved from his home in Georgetown, South Carolina, to Ann Arbor, Michigan, to live and train with a husband-and-wife coaching team. While his gift for the sport was apparent to everyone who watched him skate, the dysfunction that was happening behind the scenes wasn’t.

Kelly’s coaches, who had taken legal guardianship of him, forced him to train intensely for eight hours a day to pursue his figure skating dreams. After practice each day, however, they seemed to want nothing to do with him.

“They never really provided any legal guardianship in the way of food or picking me up from school,” he says. “So I had to kind of toughen up.”

As an escape from the instability of his situation, Kelly began learning Blink-182 and Nirvana songs with the guitar his father had given him for Christmas. He eventually began writing his own songs as a way to deal with his stress and conflicting feelings.

“I would shut myself in the room and start expressing my own feelings musically,” he says. “I found a way to have relief from something that’s difficult for me to articulate to anyone, even myself, but then to also make some sort of sense of it.”

It was self-preservation through self-expression, he says.

Kelly knew he would have to make a decision about his future: either tough it out and figure out how to take care of himself so he could keep skating, or tell his parents about the abuse.

He eventually told his parents and walked away from the sport for good.

Because of his father’s work, Kelly’s family moved a lot. During high school, they had relocated to the small town of Wyoming, Ohio, where Kelly became known as the “guitar guy.” Music, he tells me, was in the fabric of the friendships he formed there; not just listening to it, but performing it. Together with the group of friends he jammed with, he attended a Dave Matthews Band show, Kelly’s first concert, describing it as the “ultimate extension of what we do in our parents’ basements and garages.”

But it wasn’t until the Dave Matthews Band came back to Wyoming the next year that Kelly began to think about pursuing music professionally. Attending the show with his older brother, Kelly remembers his sibling leaning toward him, pointing to Matthews onstage and saying, “You’re going to do that someday.”

After a brief stint in Belgium, where his family had moved later, Kelly went to Nashville with his sister at 17 and began playing with a local jam band called Elmwood. Some music executives noticed them while playing at a bar, and within a week, they were signed to Paradigm Records and began touring.

It was while Elmwood was touring with alt-rock group O.A.R. that he got hooked on drugs. A fellow band member introduced him to amphetamines to help with Kelly’s ADHD.

“On the onset of that chemical hitting my bloodstream, I felt two things: One was that I felt normal for the first time in my life,” he says. “And the second was, I never want to stop taking this.”

When he got home from the tour, Kelly got a prescription, and the bottle was gone in two days. He felt like he could do anything, until the amphetamines wore off. Then, he says, he would feel worse than he did before, with new feelings of depression, hyper-anxiety, and lack of self-worth.

“It got to where I was taking handfuls of it,” he says. “I had to take multiple pills to even function.”

By the time Kelly was 22, he began to feel restless with the direction his career was going. “I liked playing jam band music, but it just wasn’t part of that initial expression of making sense of the world,” he says. “And I wanted to do something that had value other than attempting to tap your foot.”

Kelly quit the band and took with him the songs he had written that would become, as he describes it, the early steps toward making his own records.

In 2013, “Nashville Without You,” a song he co-wrote with Kyle Jacobs and Joe Leathers, appeared on Tim McGraw’s Two Lanes of Freedom album.

As he pursued his solo career, Kelly’s drug addiction worsened. When amphetamines stopped working, he moved on to cocaine. While he says he partied a lot with friends, it was when he was alone in his home writing songs that his drug abuse really got bad.

“I think at the time I felt such a calling to do what I’m doing now, but when I was on all of those pills, I could never stop doing it,” he says. “And I think I had associated creativity with something that was broken, and that I could at least impart something of beauty and meaning into a broken situation. But you end up drinking your own bathwater because you’re trying to heal something while also breaking it at the same time. I wish I’d never taken that pill. But that’s the choice I made.”

He knew his addiction was taking a toll on him and his family. As much as he wanted to get clean, he found it nearly impossible. “That chemical had such a vicious hold on me that it almost, in a demonic way, reared its head,” he says. “And I attempted to shun my entire family, and I’m so close with them. I saw it break my mom and my dad’s hearts in front of me. The things that I was saying that I would never say in a million years, in the way that I was saying them, and the destruction that was coming out of my spirit, seeing that land on people who have done nothing but love you in their best efforts.”

Kelly overdosed in 2015, which put him in the hospital. He then went to rehab, and he was able to stay sober for a period of time. He then began dating country artist Kacey Musgraves in 2016, and the couple married in 2017.

During his three-year marriage, Kelly relapsed. “It was a single night,” he says. “I woke up with a sock full of pills and was like, all right, never again. And it’s been that way since.”

It was around this time that Kelly lost the spiritual connection to his voice, spiraling him into his long, emotional crisis.

Thanks to his out-of-body experience, Kelly not only got his voice back, but he learned to let go of his painful past and gain a new perspective on life and his songwriting.

“Letting go of the past, letting go of the tropes that I’d written into my own script, you know?” he says. “Maybe I’m not that great a scriptwriter for myself. There is a plan above, around, and beyond what I could imagine for myself. There’s more breadth to the way I’m experiencing my own reality. And surrendering to that is the most freeing experience I’ve ever had to date.”

Cardi B Album Rollout: Using Real Life Experience

Cardi B Album Rollout: Using Real Life Experience

by jummy84 September 17, 2025
written by jummy84

More than any artist, Cardi B paved the way for social media personalities and reality stars to parlay their internet following into a music career. In the lead-up to her sophomore album, Am I The Drama?, she’s taking it back to reaching her audience through a string of viral skits, public appearances, and an emphasis on physical sales. At the risk of sounding like an armchair A&R, Cardi’s grabbed the rollout baton from Clipse and stoked our collective anticipation for her album, out Friday.

Her first skit, on September 3, doubled as a celebration of winning her civil battery case against former bodyguard Emani Ellis. “Just because I won this case…I still got lawyers.” she joked, imploring fans to buy Am I The Drama? CDs for $9.99. The special “Courtroom Edition” CD covers showcase her different viral hairstyles during the trial. “I swear to God, if I don’t sell these albums, I’m gonna have to give up my Rolls-Royce,” she mock cried. She dropped the following promo video days later in Harlem, lampooning 125th Street’s infamous vendors with CDs and vinyl strewn on the sidewalk. The video’s caption read, “My label said I gotta get out in these streets and sell this album,” as she hawked the $9.99 physicals (and incense) while Bob Marley’s “One Love” played in the background.

Her next clip was in a boardroom, where she joked that after shooting her lavish “Imaginary Players” music video, Atlantic Records had scaled back its spending. With expert comedic timing, she opened an envelope and revealed that her “budget” had dwindled to just $50. “I have to get out on the road and sell these CDs and [vinyl] myself,” she said. And the beginning of that journey took her to New York’s MTA, where she did a skit selling CDs and vinyl on a train. She had so much attention to detail that she used the same Welch’s candy box that candy sellers on the train typically use. The latter two clips felt especially familiar to New Yorkers used to people selling items on sidewalks and in between trains.

Editor’s picks

Collectively, the videos didn’t just help promote the album; they needled wannabe industry insiders. Nowadays, music fans can’t just enjoy the music, they need to speculate about first-week sales and the permutations of an artist’s label situation like they’re a manager. Cardi’s meta promotion gets at how invasive music fandom has become while placating those same fans.

The theme of the videos, chronicling her selling music like a starving busker, is another example of Cardi playing into her biomythography. She’s repeatedly expressed her frustration with Atlantic Records over the past few years, especially since the regime that signed her was replaced last September. In July, she made an X post about “being tried by these new people,” shortly before the release of her single,  “Outside” — a release that she’s said was contentious between her and the label. In August, she likened  Atlantic to a “correctional facility” in a since-deleted Instagram post. She’s seen fans speculate about acrimony at Atlantic, and how it may play into the rollout of her new album. Instead of ignoring the fracture, she’s comedically leaned into the turmoil.

Even during her recent rollout, she’s criticized Atlantic for “underestimating” the turnout for her New York City Bodega Baddie pop-up. In an Instagram post, she explained that she wanted to give attendees QR code coupons for her digital store, but the crowd was too ruckus to do so. That snafu might be a good problem for Am I The Drama?, however, demonstrating that her demand is still there.

It’s been a long wait for her latest project. Since the Invasion of Privacy, she has released songs and done features, but her fans have been anticipating a second album. In her June 2024 Rolling Stone cover story, she told writer Mankaprr Conteh about the perfectionism that’s delayed the project: “I take my music so fucking seriously that that’s why I don’t put it out. Because if it’s not perfect to my ear, if every fucking word doesn’t sound like it’s pronounced right, if the beat is overpowering the words or the words is overpowering the beat, I don’t want to put it out.” It’s also worth wondering how pregnancy may have delayed the album; she’s given birth to three children since her April 2018 debut release. Today, she revealed to Gayle King that she’s pregnant with her fourth child and her first with her boyfriend, NFL star Stefon Diggs. Even so, it looks like it’s all steam ahead on her new album; she tweeted shortly after clips from the interview went viral that “by the time tour comes I’ll be doing splits, somersaults, backflips and handstands.”

Cardi B is a natural star. Before she was a rapper, she was a well-known stripper and social celebrity who parlayed outrageous Vine skits into a spot on Love & Hip-Hop: New York — the rest is history. Her career ascended quickly in part because of her sense of humor and charisma. She radiates a bold, no-filter charm that feels familiar to her fellow New Yorkers and captivates the rest of the world. It’s why, despite not dropping an album since 2018, she’s been on shows such as Rhythm + Flow and films like Hustlers, and F9, also doing voice acting for Baby Shark’s Big Movie!  No matter how this album performs, there will always be opportunities for her in front of a camera.

Trending Stories

It’s refreshing to see Cardi get back to having fun. As entertaining as she is, she’s also been in the social mediasphere too often behind civil suits, back-and-forths with other rappers, label drama, and issues with Offset, her ex and the father of her children; her latest album title isn’t surprising. With these self-deprecating skits, she’s going back to what worked for her on day one. In a cheesy movie about a rapper, their manager or partner would have a come-to-Jesus moment with them about reminding fans why they love them, and they’d go to a cipher, or hold a free concert in the park to reacquaint the people. For Cardi, returning to her essence is just about doing silly skits back home in New York.

Clipse were able to parlay a concentrated media press run into commercial success, turning their buzz into a Vatican performance. While Cardi hasn’t done as many interviews, speaking with Billboard, Kelly Rowland, and King, she’s still won goodwill with fans and shifted the discussion from controversy to her comedic chops. If she can put effort into promoting her album, get outside, and head on a national meet and greet tour, there’s no excuse for pretty much anyone else.

Experience Mitski’s Concert Film ‘The Land’ in Theaters This Fall

Mitski: The Land, filmed over three nights at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre, screens in theaters for a limited time

Bummed you missed out on Mitski‘s last tour? You can catch it on the big screen this fall. Mitski: The Land will hit theaters for a limited time on Oct. 22.

Filmed over three nights at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre exactly one year ago (Sept. 6, 7, and 8), the shows were in support of Mitski’s last album, 2023’s The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We. The set list contained tracks from the LP — including her first-ever hit, “My Love Mine All Mine” — and highlights across her discography.

Trending Stories

Mitski has always been known for her magnetizing stage presence, featuring sharp, synchronized dance movements. The 2024 tour featured a seven-piece band, with choreography by Monica Mirabile and stage design by Andi Watson. The film was directed by Grant James, and mixed by her longtime producer, Patrick Hyland. Tickets go on sale Monday, Sept. 15.

In her 2021 Rolling Stone cover story, Mitski spoke to us about her approach to her beloved concerts. “I guess fame is relative,” she said. “There’s Taylor Swift fame and then there’s local-DIY-scene fame. The real struggle for me in getting bigger is, how do I maintain integrity in the performance? How do I make sure the audience experience is still intimate and emotional in this 8,000-cap room? How do I not resort to flashy pyrotechnics onstage? Because I don’t want my show to be about that — I want people to enter into a place with me and have an experience, and then leave having experienced something important.”

Ernie Isley Honors Legacy For Maui Music & Food Experience: Recap

Ernie Isley Honors Legacy For Maui Music & Food Experience: Recap

by jummy84 September 4, 2025
written by jummy84

Ernie Isley is the secret sauce of The Isley Brothers, but he’s far from underrated. Just ask him. As a visionary and legend in his own right, the 73-year-old recently co-headlined the second annual Maui Music & Food Experience (MMFE) with funk band, Dumpstaphunk, as part of a tribute to the late, indelible Jimi Hendrix.

His history with the influential guitarist dates back to his youth. Isley met Hendrix at the tender age of 11 when he joined the Isley Brothers’ backing band, the I.B. Specials, for a few years. Hendrix lived in their family home and was “never charged for his room [or] whatever food he ate.” Isley emphasized this tidbit in our conversation, noting that he was the only band member afforded that “privilege.”

Isley praised his talents and couldn’t help, but to smile while reflecting. “Nobody plays like him. He’s left-handed, [and played] the guitar upside down,” he said still in awe, later calling him an “electric guitar deity.”

He remembered the band watching The Beatles on Ed Sullivan with Hendrix sandwiched between him and his brother, Marvin. There was no thunderous applause for him yet, but [O’Kelly Isley Jr.] knew Hendrix was special.

According to Ernie, Kelly declared, “These guys, this English band, that’s legit. It’s not hype. I don’t know what’s going to go on with any of the other American artists, but I think we’re going to be all right because we got Jimi.” Isley recalled, “I looked over at Jimi when he said that, and Jimi was grinning ear to ear because it was true.”

Isley, himself, became a self-taught guitar player at age 16. He played the bass on “It’s Your Thing” and later helped create hits including “Fight the Power,” “The Love of You, “Voyage To Atlantis,” “Footsteps in the Dark”, “Climbin’ Up the Ladder,” and “Between The Sheets.”

“We already know Ronald’s gonna be singing everything, but when you start talking about the songs, [meaning] ‘Where’d the songs come from?’ They say, ‘Oh, a lot of that comes from Ernie,’” he explained.

When speaking on some of those hits, Isley recalled “inspiration comes, however,” but distinctly remembered one moment. “The first time I played ‘Voyage to Atlantis,’” he shared, “I apologized to Kelly and Ronald, because I said, ‘Okay, this isn’t going to sound like ‘For the Love Of You’ or ‘Make Me Say It Again,’ or ‘Hello, It’s Me,’ but it is a love song. And when they heard it, [they said], ‘Oh, how did you come up with that one?’ It turned out to be one of our standard Isley Brothers songs.”

The Maui Music & Food Experience was founded by entrepreneur and philanthropist Gary Grube, who also founded the Hua Momona Foundation and Farms. The two-day experience is an extension of both aforementioned endeavors. The farm started to help “donate produce to those with food insecurity and to the homeless shelters prior to COVID.” When the wildfires happened, the Foundation provided 6,000 free hot meals per month to the local community of Lahaina for over a year.

Both led to the creation of the MMFE, which Grube explained is “a multi-year effort to provide an additional source of much-needed funds and to provide some comfort, love, and Aloha to the people of the community.”

Isley fell in love with Maui back in 1999 when he honeymooned there with his wife, Tracy. However, he became particularly fond of Lahaina, a historic town on the coast of Maui that was tragically affected by a series of wildfires in August 2023. For the bassist, he acknowledged the “grief and sadness” that clouded the beautiful city, but welcomed the chance to partake in rebuilding the city through the celebration of music and food.

With Hawaii being such a romanticized destination, though, Grube urges tourists and transplants to first “understand the Hawaiian culture, [which includes] caring for community, family, and the land.” He added, “Helping to preserve that identity is crucial. As a first-time visitor to Maui, you see the unique and diverse beauty and begin to learn about the culture, such as saying ‘Aloha.’ Over time, on return visits, you become more familiar with the community. Everyone has been through a lot with COVID, the fire, and the economy. Living here or visiting here is a privilege, and saying Hawaiian phrases a little more often will make it an even nicer place to be. Like the late renowned chef and restaurateur Mark Ellman said, ‘Practice Aloha.’”

Grube has plans to expand the experience into other cities. Initially, he hoped to bring it to Los Angeles and San Antonio first, but with each city experiencing its own set of natural disasters, he felt “the timing was not right.” However, the first expansion will occur in Chicago this November.

Stadium Experience Appoints Henry Crane as New Chair of Public Catering

by jummy84 September 2, 2025
written by jummy84

Stadium Experience is delighted to announce the appointment of Henry Crane as the new Chair of Public Catering for the not-for-profit association. Henry brings extensive experience from his role as Public Catering Manager at MKM Stadium, home of Hull City and Hull FC, and has been a dedicated member of the Stadium Experience community for over a decade.

This summer, Henry and his team celebrated a major achievement—winning their second Best Retail Catering Award in just three years at the independently judged Stadium Events & Hospitality Awards.

About Stadium Experience

Founded in 2002, Stadium Experience aims to promote stadia as premier venues for conferences, meetings, and events, while encouraging best practice and raising industry standards. In 2017, the association expanded to include a dedicated public catering arm, offering stadium venues a platform to share expertise, collaborate, and strive for continued excellence in catering services.

Leadership & Role

In his new role, Henry will join the Stadium Experience Leadership Team, serving as the voice of public catering professionals at stadium venues across the UK. This voluntary team drives the strategic direction of the association and includes industry leaders from venues nationwide:

  • Collette Salmon – Sales Manager, Liverpool FC (Chair)
  • David Timms – Senior Business Development Manager, Chelsea FC (Vice-Chair)
  • Sue France – Treasurer, Stadium Experience
  • Henry Crane – Public Catering Manager, MKM Stadium (Public Catering Chair)
  • Kelly Englefield – Head of Sales for Stadia, Sodexo Live!
  • Jenni Ford – Director of Sales & Marketing, Coventry Building Society Arena
  • Marc Lee – Strategic Sales Manager, Principality Stadium
  • Helen Tully – Conferences, Meetings & Events Assistant Manager, Norwich City FC
  • Angela Sanders – Head of Conference & Events Sales, Edgbaston Stadium
  • Debbie Rigney – Marketing & PR Manager, Stadium Experience

About Henry Crane

Henry began his career with thirteen years in a national recruitment agency, overseeing head office functions, national accounts, contracts, and team leadership. He then transitioned into the charity sector, spending three years in fundraising roles for various national and international organisations.

Fourteen years ago, Henry accepted what was meant to be a one-time opportunity assisting the matchday hospitality team at the then KC Stadium. His enthusiasm and talent quickly stood out, leading to a permanent role as Deputy General Manager. He later found his true passion in his current role as Public Catering Manager.

Henry has since led a team that continuously challenges the status quo in stadium catering—introducing street food concepts on concourses, building a strong social media presence, and consistently delivering high-street quality food to fans. His team’s innovative approach has earned industry acclaim, including two Best Retail Catering wins at The Stadium Events & Hospitality Awards.

He now takes over the Chair of Public Catering role from Nav Daine, who founded and led this arm of Stadium Experience for the past seven years.

Henry commented: “I’d like to thank Nav Daine for his outstanding leadership of the Public Catering group within Stadium Experience. From the very beginning, Nav has been the driving force behind the group’s success, and his dedication, passion, and willingness to support others has made a lasting impact on me and many others.

The Public Catering group has become an invaluable resource—a collective of passionate, like-minded professionals sharing knowledge, ideas, and experience. This spirit of collaboration is what makes the group so special.

I’m truly honoured to take on this role and look forward to building on the strong foundations Nav has laid. My focus will be on further developing the group and exploring new ways to add value for our members.”

Collette Salmon is the overall Chair of Stadium Experience. She commented: “Firstly, I would like to say a huge thank you to Nav for all the years he has given voluntarily to create and develop the Stadium Experience public catering forum. This is now firmly part of the activities offered by our association thanks to his hard work.

We are thrilled to welcome Henry to the Leadership Team as the new driver of our stadium public catering initiatives. His work at MKM Stadium has been truly ground-breaking, and we’re excited to see that innovation and expertise shared more broadly across our network.”

Kim Dracula cancels shows after near-death experience of bus bursting into flame while they slept

Kim Dracula has cancelled two shows after narrowly escaping death when their bus caught fire as they slept.

The Australian-born musician, who now lives in the US, is currently supporting Ice Nine Kills on tour across North America. However, they dropped off two shows after their bus burst into flame on Monday (August 26).

in a post on Instagram, they revealed that the bus caught fire at around 6am while they and their crew were asleep. They were in the back behind a locked door and said they were woken up by their crew “screaming and banging the door telling me to get off the bus”.

“We all got off immediately and within 30 seconds the entire bus was engulfed in flames, starting right where I was laying down,” they wrote. They added that they had to cancel two shows after most of the people on the bus lost all their possessions in the fire, including “things we needed for the show”.

Dracula added that they hoped to rejoin the tour in Madison, Wisconsin from August 27. “I am sorry to any of you who were looking forward to seeing us perform,” they continued. “I was unable to make this post any earlier as I lost my phone in the fire. Everyone in the crew is safe, however, including myself. We look forward to jumping back in soon.”

They also shared videos of the bus on fire, as well as evidence of the damage caused.

Dracula then shared a follow-up message on their Instagram story. “Thank you to everyone who has shown us love the last couple of days. We really appreciate it,” they said.

“A lot of you have asked if you can donate money, and whilst I appreciate it, I don’t want to take money from any of you. Your vocal support is more than enough.

“Despite my career flourishing this year, I’ve just gone from almost taking my own life to just barely escaping death, so now I feel like something out there wants me to live. Thus, that is the plan, Jan.

“I will figure this out and we will be back on the road shortly. Thank you.”

Dracula’s debut album ‘A Gradual Decline In Morale’ was released in 2023. They played their first shows in the UK earlier this year, including an appearance at Download Festival.

Snoop Dogg Criticizes LGBTQ+ Representation In Children’s Films After ‘Lightyear’ Experience | Glamsham.com

Snoop Dogg’s Remarks on Lightyear:

Appearing on the It’s Giving podcast, the 53-year-old artist described his shock at discovering a same-sex couple featured in the 2022 animated film. The movie includes a montage where space ranger Alisha Hawthorne (voiced by Uzo Aduba) marries her partner Kiko and raises a child together.

“They’re like, ‘She had a baby, with another woman,’” Snoop recalled. “My grandson in the middle of the movie is like, ‘Papa Snoop? How does she have a baby with a woman? She’s a woman!’ It f’ me up. I didn’t come in for this. I just came to watch the goddamn movie.”

The rapper admitted he struggled to answer his grandson’s questions and suggested that children may be too young to process such storylines. “These are kids. We have to show that at this age? They’re going to ask questions. I don’t have the answer,” he added.

The Controversy Surrounding Lightyear:

Before its release, Lightyear was already at the center of debate. The film, which tells the backstory of the Toy Story spaceman Buzz Lightyear (voiced by Chris Evans), included Disney’s first prominent LGBTQ+ character and the studio’s first on-screen same-sex kiss. The moment was initially cut but reinstated after a backlash from Pixar employees who argued it was essential representation.

Despite the push for inclusivity, the kiss sparked bans in several countries and remains one of Disney’s most polarizing creative decisions.

Backlash to Snoop Dogg’s Comments:

Snoop’s statements have drawn criticism, with many calling them outdated and insensitive. Some activists and fans are urging event organizers to reconsider his role as a headline performer at the upcoming Australian Football League’s Grand Final.

This isn’t the first time the rapper has faced scrutiny for his stance on LGBTQ+ issues. In 2015, he referred to Caitlyn Jenner as a “science project,” and in 2014, he used an anti-gay slur in a now-deleted Instagram post.

A Larger Debate in Hollywood:

Snoop Dogg’s comments highlight the ongoing tension around LGBTQ+ representation in mainstream family films. While studios like Disney are increasingly embracing diversity, critics argue about the timing, audience, and cultural impact of such portrayals.

Supporters see these storylines as crucial for visibility and inclusivity. Detractors, like Snoop, say they raise questions that parents and grandparents may not be ready to answer in a theater setting.

Conclusion:

The reaction to Snoop Dogg’s remarks underscores how deeply divided audiences remain on LGBTQ+ representation in children’s media. For some, films like Lightyear mark important progress toward inclusivity and acceptance.

For others, they raise concerns about what is appropriate for young viewers. As Hollywood continues to push for more diverse storytelling, the debate over when and how these narratives should appear in family entertainment shows no signs of slowing down.

Tamar Braxton Describes Shocking Near-Death Experience

by jummy84 August 20, 2025

Tamar Braxton revealed graphic details of a recent near-death experience. The R&B singer took to social media to share that she “almost died” on Sunday. After the incident, the Maryland native has shifted her outlook and launched her “mental health” journey.

“I struggled to write this but everyone keeps calling me and honestly, I can’t even really talk anymore. I’m so weak,” explained the 48-year-old. “I almost died Sunday. I was found in a pool of blood from my friend with a face injury. As the days go by, the worse it is.”

“I fractured my nose, lost some teeth and mobility. The way I look at life now is totally different. As my health is on the mend my mental journey begins.. pray for me for real. I don’t even know what happened to me.”

While the reality star did not explicitly share a diagnosis or treatment plan, she has previously been open about her mental and physical health in the past. According to Deadline, in 2022, the singer publicly shared that she had been hospitalized for the flu.

In 2021, she survived a suicide attempt after what she described being “betrayed, taken advantage of, overworked, and underpaid.”

“Mental illness is real,” the youngest Braxton sister elaborated at the time. “We must normalize acknowledging it and stop associating it with shame and humiliation. The pain that I have experienced over the past 11 years has slowly ate away at my spirit and my mental. I will do everything in my power to aid those who [suffer] from mental illness, including those of us who’s mental illness was only a result from the toxic, systematic bondage that dwells [in] television. It was only God’s grace and his mercy on my attempt to end my pained life that I am here to utilize my voice.”

VIBE has reached out to a representative for Tamar Braxton for an official statement and wishes her a peaceful recovery.
