John Amos’ Children Prepare Legal Battle Over Actor’s Estate

John Amos‘ daughter has taken legal action against her brother with accusations of mistreating their father, which ultimately resulted in his death. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Shannon Amos is suing Kelly Christopher Amos (K.C.) for elder abuse, fraud, and wrongful death. John Amos’ former caretaker Belinda Foster, close associate Eugene Brummett, and his production banner, Step and One Half Productions, are also named in the pending litigation.

The outlet reported Shannon Amos claimed K.C. manipulated John Amos into signing multiple legal documents that gave him control of the estate, all while ignoring the actor’s failing health. Allegedly, K.C. began to keep John away from others in 2019 and impersonated him in text messages and email conversations.

“This calculated and cruel isolation was explicitly designed to render John Amos entirely dependent on K.C. Amos for all of his personal, financial, and critical medical decisions,” exclaimed the filing. Brummet and Foster are accused of assisting K.C. in his alleged fraudulent behavior.

“What K.C. Amos, Belinda Foster, and Eugene Brummett did in the last years of my father’s life is unfathomable, cruel, and beyond my comprehension,” said Shannon Amos in a statement to THR.

The Good Times actor died in August 2024, although the news was not revealed to the public until October of that year. Shannon claimed to have learned of his death on social media, 45 days after his passing. A statement from Foster alleged that John Amos wanted to delay his death announcement as his final wish, specifically so that his daughter did not “turn his death and interment into a circus.”

“At the time of his death, John was concerned that Shannon might turn his death and interment into a circus as she had done with other aspects of his life… It was John who requested the delay in announcing his death to Shannon and the rest of the world,” claimed Foster.

John Amos was cremated in the days following his death. Shannon has refused to rule out foul play, although the 84-year-old’s cause of death was listed as congestive heart failure. No autopsy was performed.

In June 2023, Shannon claimed John Amos to be a victim of “elder abuse and financial exploitation.” The actor reportedly refuted the allegations. The next month, K.C. Amos was taken into custody after allegedly sending threats to his sister, including images of guns, videos of him shooting the firearms, and claims of gang affiliation.

Prince’s estate responds to Apollonia’s “frivolous lawsuit”

Prince‘s estate has responded to singer-songwriter Apollonia’s lawsuit, dismissing it as “frivolous” and “unwarranted”.

The US artist, actor and former model (real name Patricia Apollonia Kotero) starred in Prince’s classic 1984 film Purple Rain, portraying his love interest who has the name Apollonia.

She recently filed a 14-page complaint against the late icon’s estate, Paisley Park Enterprises, in a Los Angeles federal court, accusing them of “attempting to steal” her name.

Kotero claims in the suit that, after appearing in Purple Rain, Prince never asked her to stop going by the name Apollonia, and did not “contend that the name did not belong to her either personally or professionally” (via Rolling Stone).

She alleges it was on the contrary, and that “Prince himself consented to and encouraged Apollonia in her professional endeavors” under that name. Kotero has now used the name for over four decades and released numerous projects using the alias.

Her legal team claims that Prince’s estate was out of line when it tried to claim ownership of the Apollonia trademark in June. She alleges that the estate filed an “intent-to-use” application that would allow it to use the name in connection with clothing and entertainment services.

Kotero has also claimed that Paisley Park Enterprises has made moves to try and cancel her trademark applications and registrations, despite her being the “rightful owner”.

Now, the estate has responded via a written statement posted on Prince’s official social media channels. “Regrettably, Ms. Patty Kotero a/k/a ‘Apollonia’ filed a frivolous lawsuit,” it began.

“As she acknowledges, Apollonia is the name Prince gave to the character played by Ms. Kotero in Prince’s movie, Purple Rain, over forty years ago. We never instructed her to cease using her adopted professional name, nor did we object to her business activities.”

It continued: “In fact, we repeatedly offered her opportunities to perform at Paisley Park using this professional name.

“Ms. Kotero’s unwarranted lawsuit comes at the tail end of years-long disputes before the Trademark Trial & Appeal Board concerning trademark registrations, in which rulings are imminent and with respect to which we have sought a settlement numerous times despite her highly unreasonable demands.

“Unsurprisingly, her suit fails to acknowledge the cancellation of her APOLLONIA registration by the United States Patent & Trademark Office.”

The statement concluded: “We look forward to the rulings in the pending trademark proceedings and a dismissal of Ms. Kotero’s recent federal action. As is our duty, we will continue to protect and preserve Prince’s assets and legacy.” See the post above.

Kotero lawsuit states that “all of the goodwill associated with the name and trademark ‘Apollonia’ for the past four decades is attributable to plaintiff”. It added: “There is only one Apollonia, and Apollonia is the source of the goods and services provided under this name.”

The complaint also suggests that the estate claimed that Kotero waived her rights to the name in 1983 when she signed a contract for her role in Purple Rain. Contesting this, Kotero’s lawsuit claims that, even if that were true, it was “never enforced” and that the “alleged rights” would have expired by now.

Additionally, the filing states that she and Prince were “lifelong friends”, and she both co-wrote The Bangles’ hit ‘Manic Monday’ with him and provided vocals on his song ‘Take Me With U’ using the stage name.

Apollonia Sues Prince’s Estate Over Ownership of Her Name

Singer, songwriter, and Prince muse Apollonia filed a new lawsuit Tuesday that alleges Prince’s estate, Paisley Park Enterprises, is “attempting to steal” her name.

In her 14-page complaint filed in federal court in Los Angeles and obtained by Rolling Stone, Apollonia, whose real name is Patricia Apollonia Kotero, says she “famously starred” as the character Apollonia, Prince’s love interest, in his classic film Purple Rain. After that, Kotero claims he never demanded that she cease using the name Apollonia and never “contended that the name did not belong to her either personally or professionally.”

“In fact, Prince himself consented to and encouraged Apollonia in her professional endeavors as ‘Apollonia,’” the lawsuit alleges. “If ever the fundamental principles of fairness – waiver, acquiescence, and laches – apply, they apply here.”

According to the complaint, Prince’s estate was out of line when it claimed ownership of the “Apollonia” trademark in June, filing an “intent-to-use” application for use in connection with clothing and entertainment services. Kotero says the estate has since taken steps to cancel her trademark registrations and applications.

Kotero, 66, is adamant that she’s the “rightful owner” of the name, so the estate has no right to accuse her of “public confusion.” The singer-songwriter says she’s been using “Apollonia” for 40 years and deserves a court order confirming that she owns the name and its associated trademarks.

“All of the goodwill associated with the name and trademark ‘Apollonia’ for the past four decades is attributable to plaintiff,” the lawsuit states. “There is only one Apollonia, and Apollonia is the source of the goods and services provided under this name.”

After she shot to fame in Purple Rain, Kotero embarked on a worldwide tour to promote the 1984 movie and her hit song from the film, Sex Shooter. She and Prince became “lifelong friends,” the lawsuit states, and she co-wrote the Bangles hit “Manic Monday” with him. Kotero says she provided vocals on Prince’s “Take Me With You,” using her stage name, and in 1985, she became a regular on the television series Falcon Crest, where she played a love interest to Lorenzo Llama’s character, again using the name Apollonia. Her self-titled solo album, Apollonia, was released in 1988.

Editor’s picks

According to the complaint, Prince’s estate purportedly claimed that Kotero waived all of her rights related to the name Apollonia when she signed a 1983 contract for her Purple Rain role.

However, Kotero says in the lawsuit that even if she entered into a valid, enforceable contract wherein Prince retained all rights to the “Apollonia” name, the ownership was “never enforced,” so the “alleged rights” expired “long ago.”

“Our client fully expects to prevail in protecting her name,” Kotero’s lawyer, Daniel M. Cislo, said in an email to Rolling Stone.

Attempts to reach a representative for Prince’s estate were not immediately successful on Tuesday. Prince died of an accidental fentanyl overdose in 2016 at the age of 57. He had no will and no children, so his six siblings inherited equal interests in his estate.
