Emmerdale star Joshua Richards on Bear’s shocking descent into modern slavery – and past role exploring “horrifying” subject matter

by jummy84 November 8, 2025
written by jummy84

Joshua Richards has spoken at length for the first time about his Emmerdale character Bear Wolf’s shocking new storyline.

Bear, who has been missing for several months while his son Paddy Dingle (Dominic Brunt) assumed he was staying with a friend in Ireland, has actually been manipulated as a victim of modern slavery.

Shedding light on Bear’s circumstances, Richards told RadioTimes.com and other press that “basically it’s something that you can slip into, and if you’ve been manipulated a certain way”.

“And being a certain age as well, where maybe you do think that you’re useless and redundant, if someone convinces you that no, you are worth something, that you do have some kind of currency. Currency being the operative word,” he emphasised.

It’s a harrowing new story for the soap. ITV

“You can be somehow manipulated into a situation that you didn’t envisage seeing yourself in, in the first place. So it’s quite fascinating how these things actually do happen.”

The actor has described Bear’s ordeal as “one of the most horrifying things you can possibly think of”.

“Some are in the dark web of life, there are people who are gangs, who are criminals, who are ready to exploit people. Because the biggest bill you’ll ever get for anything you have done, for example your house extension, the biggest part of your bill is the labour,” he explained.

“And if criminal gangs can take that essence out, that you don’t have to pay for that labour, then that’s where big profits are made, people are exploited and misery begins.”

Richards went on to share how he prepared for such a harrowing storyline.

“All I can do is be a very old-fashioned actor and read the script because I don’t hold with the method way of things,” he said. “I didn’t lock myself away in a tent or hide in the countryside and try to scrabble along.

“No, I just read the scripts and used my imagination to put myself in the position of other people, who are in the real position. Basically it’s done by the auspices of the great researchers and the writers of the drama.”

Something that helped the star, who joined Emmerdale in 2019 as Paddy’s long-lost father, was that he has already portrayed modern slavery in his career.

Paddy looks worried in Emmerdale

Paddy thinks the police aren’t taking the situation seriously. ITV

“But also what’s fortunate for me, in 2007 I did a play written by John Godber and Jane Thornton from Hull Truck [Theatre Company] called Sold. Which was all about modern slavery.

“That was 18 years ago and we did it in Hull and also in Liverpool University, so it’s not a new subject for me; it’s something I’ve been aware of for many years and even before I did that play.

“It is quite frightening that even as we speak, there are about [50] million people in modern day slavery, which is horrific.”

Asked about the instalment in which Emmerdale will detail how Bear was targeted, Richards revealed: “Yes, it’ll be a standalone episode, where we’ll have some kind of explanation of what exactly happened to him after he got in his car and drove away.

“We did see a few weeks after he’d left the village that he was still with his car and not with his friend Gnasher in Ireland at all. So we will find out exactly what happened to him.”

The episode was filmed backwards, meaning that, after being assured that he would be coming back to the show, Richards had one specific assignment during his time off.

Celia Daniels grabs April Windsor and threatens her in Emmerdale

Celia and Ray – who are already grooming Amelia and Dylan – are his captors. ITV

“Clare Golds in make-up said: ‘Whatever you do, don’t cut your hair and don’t shave your beard. Go raggedy’. So I became a raggedy old man while I was off.

“You first see Bear when he’s at the real bottom, looking really filthy and scraggly and unkempt. Then bit by bit we took it away.”

While soaps have briefly explored modern slavery in recent years, this is the first time it will be covered in depth – and with an older character like Bear, who, notes Richards, typically considers himself strong and capable of defending himself.

“I thought it would be interesting, because of course Bear has been experiencing this depression and confusion. So maybe it’s a great thing to find him so vulnerable – a big strong man being vulnerable and exploited.”

On the message he hopes this story can send, Richards told RadioTimes.com and other media: “Be aware – it’s going on under our noses.

“We all have our cars cleaned and say: ‘Ooh, that’s cheap’. But who are the people cleaning your car? I mean, that’s just a very tiny part of it.

“It’s other things, it’s people who are picking your spuds, it’s people who are fixing your driveway, maybe there’s somebody doing work on your roof. You really don’t know. I mean, there are bona fide proper people – builders, farmers, other people – out there,” he said.

“I’m very proud to be part of what ITV is doing with these wonderful writers and the great research which has gone on. And maybe hopefully something… it will prompt something and there will be action.”

Joshua joined the soap in 2019. ITV

How does Richards think the viewers will react to the revelations about Bear?

“They’ll be furious!”

“I do get people coming up to me and saying: ‘How is Bear? We’re worried about him?’ You think ‘this is great’ because people who watch this soap really do care.”

Emmerdale is working with the Salvation Army on Bear’s story, which has also seen teens April and Dylan groomed in recent weeks.

Emmerdale airs huge twist as character ‘returns back from the dead’

by jummy84 November 6, 2025
written by jummy84

This article contains references to child sexual exploitation that some readers may find distressing.

An Emmerdale character who seemingly died last week is actually very much alive.

As viewers of the ITV soap have witnessed, April Windsor (Amelia Flanagan) and her boyfriend Dylan Penders (Fred Kettle) have been groomed into a life of drug and sex trafficking by twisted Celia Daniels (Jaye Griffiths) and Ray Walters (Joe Absolom).

They planned to flee the village and start afresh, but were soon caught on the outskirts of Leeds and ordered to return home.

Celia sent April to meet another client. ITV

With their ‘debt’ towards the pair worsening, April was told that another client had been booked for her to sleep with, and this time she had no option but to go through with it.

The youngster headed to a house in Hotten, where client Callum (Max Lohan) reminded her that although the door was open and she could leave at any time, he had booked her services for the entire evening and he’d have to alert Celia to the matter.

As he began to make his advances, a fearful Amelia whacked him around the head with a vodka bottle – apparently to his death.

With nobody she could turn to for help, she was forced to admit all to her groomers. Celia agreed to cover the tracks so that they wouldn’t be implicated, and Ray headed off to deal with the grizzly crime scene.

Celia warned April that should she cause anymore trouble for their scheme, she’d play ‘Burn, Stab, Drown’ with grandad Bob (Tony Audenshaw), dad Marlon (Mark Charnock) and Dylan.

In tonight’s episode, the teen sat alone in the village, knowing it was only a matter of time before Ray gave her another job.

Sure enough, he soon pulled up and told her that he was needing drug dealers in Newcastle, and April saw this as an opportunity to escape his clutches for a while.

After telling Marlon that she was staying with a friend’s sister at Newcastle Uni, she said her goodbyes to brother Leo and prepared to go.
On the outskirts of the village, Ray was having a secret meeting with none other than Callum, the man she supposedly killed.
Will April find out the truth?

Emmerdale confirms aftermath of April’s fatal act as Celia tightens grip

by jummy84 October 31, 2025

This article contains references to child sexual exploitation that some readers may find distressing.

April Windsor (Amelia Flanagan) has become further entwined in Celia Daniels’s (Jaye Griffiths) sickening county lines plot in Emmerdale.

In yesterday’s episode, she was sent out to meet yet another ‘client’, who had paid Celia and her son Ray Walters (Joe Absolom) a sum of cash in exchange for sex with the 16-year-old.

April voiced her worries to the paedophile Callum (Max Lohan), who seemed to take a sympathetic approach towards her. He reassured her that she could leave at any time, but as he’d booked her for the whole night he wanted to get what he paid for.

Amelia killed a client in yesterday’s episode. ITV

She was horrified, and after some drinks, decided against sleeping with him. But Callum wouldn’t take no for an answer and launched himself towards her. In a panic, April grabbed a bottle of vodka and whacked it across his head, killing him instantly.

In today’s instalment she feared for her future and had nobody she could contact for help. Boyfriend Dylan Penders (Fred Kettle) has seemingly disappeared after a run-in with Ray, and there was no way she could explain the situation to dad Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock) or grandfather Bob Hope (Tony Audenshaw).

With nowhere left to turn, she summoned Celia and Ray. She was on a date with Bob and made her excuses to attend a ‘farm emergency’.

April explained that she had no choice to attack him, and Celia was furious that she’d caused yet another issue with a client. The youngster begged her groomers for help, and Ray headed off to deal with the grizzly crime scene.

Callum was very much dead – still lay lifeless on the bed. Ray ordered someone to come to his house and get rid of his body, while Celia instructed April to take her clothes off so they could get rid of the evidence.

Celia warned that she would hurt Bob, Marlon and Dylan ITV

There was no way this was coming back onto her – and as a result, April was off the hook. Ray made it clear that should she think about telling the police, he’d be first to dob her in.

Later, after the mess was ‘cleared up’, Celia told April that her debt still hadn’t been paid off. If she thought about causing another issue, she’d play her version of ‘Snog, Marry, Avoid’ with the three most important men in her life – Bob, Marlon and Dylan.

Her version? ‘Burn, Stab, Drown.’

Will April find the courage to come clean to Marlon in next week’s special episode?

Joe Absolom reveals Emmerdale villain Ray's truth behind Laurel connection amid "subservient" dynamic with mum Celia

Joe Absolom reveals Emmerdale villain Ray’s truth behind Laurel connection amid “subservient” dynamic with mum Celia

by jummy84 October 21, 2025
written by jummy84

Joe Absolom has revealed the truth behind Emmerdale villain Ray Walters’s romantic attachment to Laurel Thomas (Charlotte Bellamy), and shared some insight into his relationship with adoptive mum Celia Daniels (Jaye Griffiths).

Ray has been manipulating April Windsor (Amelia Flanagan) and her boyfriend Dylan Penders (Fred Kettle) into delivering and selling drugs for him.

Things took an even darker turn when Ray led April into sexual slavery.

But when we learned that Celia has been pulling the strings all along, it became clear that Ray, while ruthless, isn’t half as dangerous as her!

Chatting to RadioTimes.com and other media, Absolom explained: “To April and Dylan, he’s at the top. But to actually most people watching him, people realize he’s one of the many, one of the cogs.

“And you see above him is [Celia], who he’s terrified of and attached to in a sort of maternal sense. He’s very much the child and the subservient one,” he added.

“Whereas with Dylan and April, he’s kind of the dominator, if you like, or the driving force of most of those things. Most of my scenes are different with those two guys to what you see with [Celia], who’s this very formidable, strident character.”

Celia (Jaye Griffiths) with an unsuspecting Moira (Natalie J Robb) ITV

Describing a moment on set where a co-star had yet to find out the nature of Ray and Celia’s relationship, the actor revealed: “We did a scene the other day and Jaye touched my cheek, and one of the other actors went, ‘wait, are you two dating?'”

While Celia’s more tactile moments seem to be used to keep Ray in line, there’s another, warmer opportunity to see Ray’s softer side when he takes a genuine shine to Laurel!

“I think when he meets Laurel, there’s something that brings a side out to him that he didn’t know he was going to have, but the writers did. I like it because it has a different side of it. It’s more human.

“I think he sees a family,” Absolom added. “Sees her with her kids and sees a family life that he never had because he was adopted very early on by Celia when he was eight.

“So we see in episodes later, not flashbacks, but little hints of what his life has been like. So I think to me, Laurel is this kind of woman who has a business and a family and children are kind of, you know, interesting. She lives in a nice house.

“Yeah, I think it’s attractive to Ray in lots of different ways.”

But despite the possibility of love on the horizon, Ray will turn his attention back to crime, discovering that Dylan has gone behind his back and stolen some money after a job.

“He’s got the backpack and he’s been double crossed, I guess,” muses the star.

“So it’s a real moment where he realises he may be losing a grip on these two people and that he has to now take it to a different level and try and get them back and get the money back and get them back onside. So it’s a risk of losing everything, really.”

As Dylan and April make a desperate bid to escape, we’ll have to wait and see if Ray will catch up with them.

But Absolom is enjoying his time on Emmerdale, summing up what he’s been up to since stepping into the role of Ray.

“Since I’ve arrived, I’ve been paying kids to deliver drugs, I’ve been delivering drugs myself, I’ve been pimping out other characters. And I’ve taught Dylan how to drive. There’s a real gamut of opportunity for the Dales!”

Emmerdale confirms three special episodes – including Bear mystery solved

by jummy84 October 15, 2025
written by jummy84

Emmerdale has confirmed three special standalone episodes coming up this autumn.

The instalments will focus on April (Amelia Flanagan) and Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock), Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley) and Bear Wolf (Joshua Richards).

Viewers of the ITV soap will know that April Dingle has found herself in danger in recent weeks as she and Dylan Penders have been exploited by the villainous Ray Walters as part of his criminal operation.

In the special episode focusing on the troubled teen, Marlon tries to get through to her as she remains at the mercy of the drug dealers, with ITV teasing that the instalment will explore the fragile and possibly broken relationship between the father and daughter.

The Robert Sugden-focused episode, meanwhile, will take viewers behind the bars of his recent incarceration.

Emmerdale viewers will remember that the character returned to the village in May after serving six years in prison following the death of Lee Posner, but what exactly happened during those six years?

Elsewhere, the Bear-focused episode will see Paddy (Dominic Brunt) discover that his estranged father, who he believed had been living with friends in Ireland since July, never actually made the journey across the Irish sea.

ITV has teased that the episode will “explore the hundred missing days of Bear’s life and we’ll learn that he is sadly trapped in an all too common situation for a forgotten generation”.

Further details on when the special episodes will air will be announced in due course.

Emmerdale star teases John Sugden “twists and turns” as Aaron and Robert remain in danger

by jummy84 September 11, 2025

However, with things getting ever more complicated for John, it would seem that surely he’s only moments away from being caught out? Or maybe not…

Speaking with RadioTimes.com on the red carpet for the National Television Awards 2025, John’s actor Oliver Farnworth was asked whether there was more carnage on the way for his character.

He teased: “It wouldn’t be Emmerdale without a few twists and turns, would it? So I’d say, just when you think something’s gonna go one way, it can always go another.”

John Sugden in Emmerdale. ITV

Farnworth also said that John does love Aaron “1 million per cent”, and that he “feels like he’s his soulmate”.

“But the problem that comes with that, with someone who’s been kind of shielded from love as John has a lot of their life, is that he doesn’t really know what to do with love.

“So he’s got Aaron, and he goes, ‘Well, I just love you so much, I just want you, I don’t want anyone else.’ It just becomes quite possessive, quite dangerous. And I think that’s what’s happened in this instance, and that’s what’s led to all of this carnage.”

It was previously reported that Farnworth will be departing from the soap “imminently” – but just how soon that actually ends up being, and how much damage John can do in the meantime, remains to be seen. ITV previously declined to comment on John’s future.

Emmerdale sets up dangerous twist for Aaron Dingle in ITVX release

by jummy84 September 3, 2025
written by jummy84

At the end of Tuesday’s (2nd September) episode, John left captive Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb) alone in the underground bunker, telling him he wouldn’t be coming back.

This came after Mack told John about Aaron’s fling with Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley), claiming John would never be able to compete with the love Robert and Aaron shared.

John believed that Mack was lying, but things are set to take a turn for the worse after John and Aaron return to the village to visit Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter).

Robert visits Aaron ITV

Chas is upset when Aaron reveals his and John’s plans to move to John’s childhood home.

Aaron downplays his concerns about John’s suspicious behaviour, but Chas senses something is off.

When John hears that Mack’s wife, Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins), is thinking of reporting him missing, he panics and makes an excuse to leave, with Aaron baffled by the situation.

John returns to the bunker after all, and makes a new plan to throw Charity off the scent.

We know that she later receives a voice note from Mack, so has John forced Mack to leave the message?

Meanwhile, Robert hears about Aaron’s permanent move and storms round to the flat where Aaron is packing up alone.

As Robert insists that Aaron is making a mistake and moves in for a kiss, how will a conflicted Aaron respond?

By the time Aaron is back at the cottage, John has what he believes is a good reason to take sinister action; but Aaron remains oblivious to the danger he is in.

But what has led John to decide to drug Aaron?

There are a few curveballs in this instalment that you won’t see coming, and you can catch the full story now on ITVX or at 7:30pm on ITV1.

On Thursday (4th September), John has spiked a bottle of whiskey, which Aaron drinks from more than once.

What is John’s plan here, and will Aaron be okay?

Emmerdale spoilers tease danger for Mackenzie after disturbing reveal

by jummy84 August 30, 2025
written by jummy84

Emmerdale fans were left in shock this week, when it was revealed that Mackenzie Boyd, thought to have been killed, was actually still alive, and being held captive by John Sugden.

Now, we’ve got a sense of where this dark storyline is heading for Mack, as some first-look spoiler clips for episodes next week have been revealed.

As provided by Digital Spy, one of the clips sees Mack waking up in an underground bunker, disorientated and tied to a bed.

As he has flashbacks to how he ended up there, John approaches him and tells him to remain calm, saying he’s trying to help him.

Mack reveals he knows the truth, telling John that he “tried to kill” him, just like he “killed Nate”.

The clip in question comes from Monday’s (1st September) episode, while another from Wednesday’s (3rd September) episode sees John’s half brother Robert growing suspicious of him once more, and pointing out the similarities between Mack and Nate’s disappearances.

Will he be able to uncover the truth and find where John is keeping Mack before it’s too late?

Fans have been waiting for the villainous John to get his comeuppance for some time now, and earlier this month it was reported that actor Oliver Farnworth’s exit from the show was imminent, suggesting it could be just around the corner.

By entering your details you are agreeing to our terms and conditions and privacy policy. You can unsubscribe at any time.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that John had killed Nate Robinson and orchestrating near-death experiences for several characters, just so that he could play the hero.

It seems that is what he’s doing once more with Mack, appearing to save his life, but as he isn’t falling for it, it may not be too long until he resorts to a more deadly course of action.
