Heidi Gardner and Ego Nwodim on ‘Challenging’ Environment at ‘SNL’

After leaving “Saturday Night Live” before Season 51, Heidi Gardner and Ego Nwodim got candid about the work culture at the iconic late-night sketch show.

While hosting Gardner on her “Thanks Dad” podcast, Nwodim said the “SNL” cast has to spend a lot of “intimate” time together writing and rehearsing, which can either bring everyone together or breed contempt within the group.

“To have to share such an intimate space together for hours on end on Saturdays and Thursdays and Fridays, whenever we were rehearsing, yeah, it made us close quick,” Nwodim explained. “But it doesn’t have to work that way. It could also not make you close. It can make you not like each other. It can make you feel whatever mutually, ‘I’m sharing a space with this person.’ But I’m so grateful we got so close.”

Gardner added that she was grateful for the friendship she and Nwodim built while on the show and was thankful that egos never got in the way.

“I’m so honored that we worked so hard there, and then we also worked on our friendship so hard, which wasn’t hard, by the way,” Gardner said. “I just mean we’re human, so we have egos, we want things for ourselves, we want to succeed. There weren’t a lot of times we were able to succeed the way we wanted at the exact same time.”

Later in the discussion, Nwodim said it can be challenging to feel like the “SNL” cast is “winning together,” which, among other reasons, makes the show “not the easiest place to work.” However, she praised Gardner for being “such a light in what can be such a challenging place.”

She added, “But I’m like, if you can leave — in a place where it can get so competitive and you can become so self involved, if you can leave and be still remarkably lovely and such a light and still pouring into other people like you, I think you succeeded.”

Gardner unveiled her exit from “SNL” on Aug. 28 after being on the show for eight seasons, while Nwodim left on Sept. 12 after her seventh. The “SNL” cast experienced a major shakeup before Season 51, with Devon Walker, Emil Wakim and Michael Longfellow all leaving the show. Please Don’t Destroy member Ben Marshall was pulled up to the main cast, while Martin Herlihy moved to the writing staff and John Higgins left the show.

Ego Nwodim Says ‘SNL’ Was “Always Meant To Be A Stepping Stone”

Former Saturday Night Live cast member Ego Nwodim says she’s excited about moving on to new challenges, and that the NBC comedy show is a “stepping stone.”

Speaking on a panel titled “Cultural Impact: How Story, Style, and Strategy Shape What’s Next” at the Fast Company Innovation Festival in New York City Wednesday, Nwodim addressed her recent SNL departure after seven seasons.

“There’s so much I want to do and SNL is always meant to be a stepping stone,” she said. “There’s so many ideas that I need to have time to create. I’m looking forward to doing that. So directing, more writing in a different capacity. Very excited. It’s an exciting thing.”

Nwodim’s decision not to return for the show’s 51st season, launching October 4, was one of the more surprising recent exits – her announcement came after the show’s cast line-up was thought to be settled. The turnover for the upcoming season was extensive: Before Nwodim’s announcement, the exits had already included Heidi Gardner (after eight seasons), Michal Longfellow (after three seasons), Devon Walker (after three seasons), Emil Wakim (after one season), and John Higgins, who was part of the Please Don’t Destroy troupe that joined the late-night show in 2021.

Nwodim announced on Instagram last week that she would not be back for another SNL season. “The hardest part of a great party is knowing when to say goodnight,” she wrote. “But after seven unforgettable seasons, I have decided to leave SNL. I am immensely grateful to Lorne [Michaels] for the opportunity, to my castmates, the writers, and the crew for their brilliance, support, and friendship. Week after week on that stage taught me more than I could have ever imagined, and I will carry those memories, and that laughter, with me always.”

Watch the panel discussion below. Nwodim’s “stepping stone” comments come at the 1:25 mark.

Paramore’s Hayley Williams Officially Releases New Album Ego Death at a Bachelorette Party: Listen

Hayley Williams of Paramore has released a new solo album comprised of the 17 tracks shared earlier this summer and the new bonus song “Parachute.” Ego Death at a Bachelorette Party is out now on streaming services, with physical releases arriving on November 7 via Post Atlantic—Williams’ own label, started after her 20-year contract with Atlantic ended—and distributed by Secretly Distribution. Listen to the new album below.

Since granting the title track with a music video, Williams has also shared a visual for “Glum,” directed by AJ Gibboney and Zac Farro, which you can watch below. Williams and Daniel James wrote, played, and recorded most instruments on Ego Death at a Bachelorette Party, with additional help longtime collaborators Brian Robert Jones and Joey Howard. Jim-E Stack also contributed to “True Believer.”

Back in 2020, Williams made her solo debut with the full-length album Petals for Armor. She followed it up with the three-track Petals for Armor: Self-Serenades EP that same year and Flowers for Vases / Descansos in 2021. She described the latter LP as “a prequel, or some sort of detour between parts 1 and 2 of Petals.” Afterward, Paramore wrote and released their fifth studio album as a band, This Is Why, in 2023.
