A Century Under the Influence of Edward Gorey

To wit, in “Something Else Entirely” there’s a sprawling illustration of women in black, men collapsed at their feet and peering out cautiously from their bustle skirts for Helen Vendler’s review of Notable American Women in a 1972 issue of The New York Times Book Review; an eerie greyscale garden maze and rambling topiary for a 1984 cover of TWA’s Ambassador magazine; a teensy spot illustration of a man in a trench on the case for TV Guide to accompany a regular gossip feature that first appeared in 1988; and a grinning skeleton luxuriating with a book in a striped hammock while elegantly dressed guests at a garden party look on with concern for a 1995 summer reading campaign for Bantam Books. The last drawing Gorey published in his lifetime is also on display here: an assemblage of fashionably frocked women arranged around letters spelling “black” for a 2000 issue of The New Yorker listing an exhibition at the Fashion Institute of Technology titled “The Little Black Dress and Other Signs of Status.” On paper, many of these assignments wouldn’t necessarily appeal, but brought to life by Gorey’s pen, they are utterly captivating.

But why, exactly, does Gorey continue to draw fans en masse now? In part it may be because his art and writing are a cleverly executed study in contrast. “Gorey’s work walks that perfect line between dark and funny, childlike and morbid,” says Compton. While he clearly reveled in darkness, there was always light too. “His work welcomes us into a gloomy world, but also makes this world hilarious and strangely lovable,” adds Schwartzburg.

And while some of that parallel proto-Victorian universe Gorey conjured feels old-fashioned, the work somehow doesn’t age. “It’s emotionally timeless,” says Compton. “He captured loneliness, absurdity, and curiosity in a way that still feels modern.” And, crucially, in a way that was, and is, deeply human—which in 2025 may be more valuable than ever.

“Something Else Entirely: The Illustration Art of Edward Gorey” is on view at the Society of Illustrators through January 3. “Edward Gorey: The Gloomy Gallery” is on view at Houghton Library through January 12.

“Follow your heart, feel the love, and find your home with The Family McMullen.” Warner Bros revealed the official trailer for The Family McMullen, a new movie made by Edward Burns. It’s the long-awaited follow-up to the first film that Edward Burns ever directed called The Brothers McMullen (in 1995), about three Irish Catholic brothers from Long Island. As with the original,  The Family McMullen is an ensemble comedy both written and directed by Edward Burns – which tracks the romantic entanglements of a now 50-something Barry McMullen (Burns) and his 20-something kids, as well as his brother Patrick and widowed sister-in-law Molly, who are also facing unexpected romantic hurdles. It’s getting a one-day-only release in theaters this month, before it’s available to watch at home anytime. 🎄 The Family McMullen stars Connie Britton, Edward Burns, & Michael McGlone reprising their roles in the first film, along with Tracee Ellis Ross, Halston Sage, Juliana Canfield, Pico Alexander, and Brain d’Arcy James. This looks much more cheesier (about the kids this time!) and more like a Hallmark Channel movie than the original.

The new film tracks the romantic entanglements of a now 50-something Barry McMullen (Edward Burns) and his 20something kids, as well as his brother Patrick (Michael McGlone) and widowed sister-in-law Molly (Connie Britton), who are also facing unexpected romantic hurdles. The Family McMullen is written and directed by American actor / filmmaker Edward Burns, director of many films including The Brothers McMullen, She’s the One, No Looking Back, Sidewalks of New York, Ash Wednesday, Looking for Kitty, The Groomsmen, Purple Violets, Nice Guy Johnny, Newlyweds, The Fitzgerald Family Christmas, Summer Days Summer Nights, Beneath the Blue Suburban Skies, Millers in Marriage previously. bitchy | Edward Enninful won’t work with Duchess Meghan again, doesn’t want to ‘repeat myself’

Edward Enninful is trying to rebuild his career or do something new. Two years ago, he left British Vogue after a six-year stint as editor-in-chief which revolutionized the magazine. Before Enninful, British Vogue was pretty staid and not inclusive in the least. Enninful put women of color on the cover, he brought in the Duchess of Sussex to guest-edit the magazine (in what would become the highest-selling issue in the mag’s history), and he prioritized global fashion and more international models. It’s widely believed that Enninful left British Vogue after he made a play to replace Anna Wintour and he got outmaneuvered. Whatever happened, Enninful is only hinting at it these days. He’s launched his own media company, EE72, and he’s launched a new quarterly magazine, 72 (his birth year is 1972). To promote the new venture, Enninful gave a lengthy interview to the Times of London, and it’s worth talking about some of these quotes.

He doesn’t blame Anna Wintour for his departure from Conde Nast. “I feel I really changed Vogue, and my work was pretty much done. I’ll have fond memories but I was never going to do a lifetime’s service. I couldn’t have done what Anna has done.”

He swears he hasn’t fallen out with Wintour. “I text a bit. I had a great run at Vogue. I’m different; I don’t have rules. I have boundaries, but I allow creative freedom. I have no forbidden colours, though I don’t embrace colour myself. I prefer to hide and get on with the job.” What about British Vogue’s new head of editorial content, Chioma Nnadi? “She’s very competent,” he says, as icy as Wintour suddenly.

He isn’t focused on class: “I love King Charles and Queen Camilla — I went to the coronation with Katy Perry. I am happy to have them in the magazine. They care about the same things I do.”

The rise of sexism: “Women constantly need to be vigilant, and I am there for the fight. There is the manosphere, but that is not my world or reality — Andrew Tate is not my thing. But I think we must meet the young on their platforms to counter him, give them something else, more optimism. Gen Z are very interesting. They care about issues; they are curious. They need to be protected as they navigate this new online world and I want to do it with them.”

His comments about the Duchess of Sussex: That is what Enninful does so adeptly: he loves gossip, rarely falling out with celebrities in the highly fraught fashion world — the Duchess of Sussex is rumoured to be one of the few exceptions after she guest-edited the September 2019 edition of Vogue. He pauses. “Meghan and I had a great moment with the issue we did, but I feel like I have done it and I wouldn’t necessarily repeat myself.”

[From The Times]

Leaving the EIC position after six years because he felt his work was “done”?? Bizarre. Whatever happened – and we still don’t know – it feels less Game of Thrones and more like The Office, you know? Just petty office politics rather than a larger falling out. As for what he says about Meghan… curious wording from the Times and curious wording from Enninful. Earlier this year, there were some really odd stories about Enninful and Meghan falling out in 2022 because he wouldn’t give her a British Vogue cover or something. The nonsensical stories felt like they were coming from Enninful’s camp or they were happening with his approval. I strongly suspect that Enninful asked Meghan for a favor (something like, “will you appear on the cover, it would really help me out”) and she said no. I suspect that because he’s behaving like HE got jilted. Honestly, his public insistence that he doesn’t want Meghan for a cover shows that he’s a bad editor too, right? Like… why would you not want one of the most famous women in the world on the cover of your start-up magazine?

“Forever Begins Again” – The Teaser That Broke the Internet

On Wednesday, the franchise’s official page dropped a poster featuring Bella (Kristen Stewart), Edward (Robert Pattinson), and Jacob (Taylor Lautner) with the cryptic tagline: “Forever Begins Again. This October.”

The post was co-shared by Lionsgate, which owns the rights to the saga, and Fathom Events, known for re-releasing cultural classics in theatres. Together, they’ve sparked speculation that this is more than just a nostalgia play.

Why Now? The 20th Anniversary Connection

October 5, 2025, marks the 20th anniversary of the first Twilight novel by Stephenie Meyer. The re-release perfectly aligns with this milestone, giving both old and new fans a chance to revisit Forks, Washington, on the big screen.

The saga includes:

Twilight (2008)

New Moon (2009)

Eclipse (2010)

Breaking Dawn – Part 1 (2011)

Breaking Dawn – Part 2 (2012)

Together, the films grossed over $400M worldwide, catapulting its young cast into superstardom.

Fan Frenzy: From Theories to Fandom Wars

The teaser immediately lit up social media. While many are preparing for a theatrical re-release, others are daring to hope for something bigger, a new animated series, book, or spin-off film.

Comments flooded in:

“Y’all, I am going to burst into fangirl flames.”

Even Jeopardy!’s official account chimed in with “OMG OMG OMG.”

Twilight’s Pop Culture Legacy:

Love it or hate it, Twilight changed the pop-culture landscape. It made vampires mainstream, turned Christina Perri’s “A Thousand Years” into a wedding anthem, and gave us one of the most debated love triangles in cinema history.

Robert Pattinson has often joked that fans tell him Twilight “ruined vampire movies,” while Taylor Lautner still insists Jacob deserved Bella. The frenzy proves one thing: Twilight remains as divisive, dramatic, and addictive as ever.

What to Expect This October?

Details will be revealed soon, but here’s what fans can likely look forward to:

Theatrical screenings of all five films across major markets

Special fan events by Fathom Events

New merchandise and re-released soundtracks timed with the anniversary

Whether you’re Team Edward or Team Jacob, October promises to reignite the Twilight fever that once had the world divided over sparkling vampires and shirtless werewolves.

Final Word:

For a franchise that ended in 2012, the return of The Twilight Saga proves its eternal hold on pop culture. With nostalgia, fandoms, and a new generation of audiences ready to join the ride, the saga’s comeback could be one of the biggest theatrical re-releases of the decade.Stay tuned — because in 2025, forever really does begin again.

Pristine Trailer for Edward Yang’s Masterpiece ‘Yi Yi’ 4K Restoration

“Harmony is a precious thing…” Janus Films has debuted a new 4K restoration trailer for the re-release of the masterpiece Yi Yi, the final film from Taiwanese maestro Edward Yang. This originally premiered in the year 2000 at the Cannes Film Festival, and has grown with time to now be considered one of the greatest films ever made (I completely agree!). It really is an astonishing, towering, extraordinary work of cinematic art – I adore it, too. Yi Yi, titled in full Yi Yi: A One and a Two…, is a portrait of a middle-class family in Taipei, Taiwan in the late 90s. A man in his 40s, his teenage daughter and his eight-year-old son experience life, navigating between remorse, hope and disappointment. It stars Wu Nien-jen, Elaine Jin, Issey Ogata, Kelly Lee, Jonathan Chang. In celebration of its 25th anniversary, this 4K digital restoration was carried out by Pony Canyon Inc., with analog & digital processes provided by Imagica Entertainment Media Services, Inc. Yi Yi really is everything cinema should be about – I watched it for my first time back in 2020 and wrote about the film: “It’s hard to grasp in just one viewing how rich and layered and insightful every last scene is.” All I can do is encourage everyone to take time to watch the film and let it connect with you…

Here’s the new official 4K restoration trailer (+ poster) for Edward Yang’s film Yi Yi, direct from YouTube:

Yi Yi 4K Restoration Trailer

Yi Yi 4K Restoration Poster

The extraordinary, internationally embraced Yi Yi (A One and a Two…), directed by the late Taiwanese master Edward Yang, follows a middle-class family in Taipei over the course of one year, beginning with a wedding and ending with a funeral. Whether chronicling middle-age father NJ’s tentative flirtations with an old flame or precocious young son Yang-Yang’s attempts at capturing reality with his beloved camera, Yang deftly imbues every gorgeous frame with a compassionate clarity. Warm, sprawling, and dazzling, this intimate epic is one of the undisputed masterworks of the new century. Yi Yi, also known as 一一 in Mandarin, is written directed by Taiwanese-American filmmaker master Edward Yang, his seventh and final feature film he made before passing away in 2007. Produced by Shinya Kawai. It first premiered at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival and won Best Director. It has since been restored and re-released including on Criterion 4K Blu-ray back in 2011. This new 4K restoration also just premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. Janus Films will release Yi Yi back in theaters starting September 5th, 2025. It is a must watch.
