Eddie Murphy Documentary’s Biggest Revelations

by jummy84 November 12, 2025
written by jummy84

The documentary Being Eddie isn’t a totally exhaustive portrait of Eddie Murphy, but for the generations who have been entertained by him since he exploded into stardom, it offers a lot of fascinating insight into who he is as a person. Says Murphy, at one point, “My biggest blessing is not my comedic talent — my biggest blessing is that I love myself and I knew what I wanted to do really, really early. That’s why I didn’t fall into any traps or anything. Because at the root of it all, I loved myself.”

In extended interviews with Murphy as well as collaborators including Jerry Seinfeld, Dave Chappelle, Arsenio Hall, Pete Davidson, and more, director Angus Wall explores a lot of fascinating topics with the multi-hyphenate, including the wild stories he has after spending 40 years in the spotlight. There’s also, appropriately enough given the title, a lot of musing on how he sees himself as a performer: “I’m not a stand-up comedian. I’m funny, but I don’t go, ‘I’m a comedian,’ like I don’t go ‘I’m an actor’ or ‘I’m a musician.’ I’m an artist that can express himself a bunch of different ways. Sensitivity is the gauge, not how much talent you have. The most sensitive one will be the artist that’s most in tune.”

He then laughs. “I don’t want to get too artsy. I could get really artsy if you let me.”

Below, find 15 of the biggest revelations to come from Being Eddie about Murphy’s career and life, from his earliest days to his current outlook on family, death, and cats. There’s also a wild Yul Brynner story, and some shockingly highbrow context for his love of MTV’s Ridiculousness.

Eddie Murphy’s First “Showbiz Thing” Was a Ventriloquist’s Dummy

The Willie Talk dummy he says he received at a young age was a relatively basic puppet: “Willie Talk’s eyes didn’t move. His mouth just moved.” However, Murphy points out, it reveals that even at a young age, he was very interested in exploring the possibilities of playing multiple characters at once.

Later in the documentary, he reveals an idea for a stand-up bit where he’d have Bill Cosby and Richard Pryor marionettes having a conversation, with him sitting between them. “I’d get at least 10 good minutes of jokes out of it,” he adds, and at the end of the movie we actually do get to see that in action: Murphy playing with his Cosby and Pryor puppets, having a laugh.

Eddie Murphy’s Birth Father Was Murdered When He Was Young

Murphy doesn’t share a lot of happy recollections about the time when his parents were together, sharing that “my very first memory is my mother and father fighting — she threw the Virgin Mary at him.” His father died when he was eight years old, and while Murphy doesn’t know all the details, he believes his father was killed by another woman in a “lover’s quarrel.”

Despite the early loss of his father, Murphy does speak fondly about his stepfather Vernon Lynch, “a solid father figure for the rest of my life.”

Eddie Murphy Has a Photo of Himself Punching Muhammad Ali in the Face

Early into the documentary, Murphy’s going through some memorabilia, which leads him to share the memory of punching the iconic boxer in the face one night. “Ali could talk some shit, and every now and then, Ali be talking too much shit,” is what he shares about that incident.

He does go on to call Ali “my hero,” noting that there was “nobody like Muhammad Ali in American history. He looked like he was plugged into the wall — he had this light. He stood up to the government, stood up for what he felt was right.”

The Co-Founder of Quibi Is Responsible for Eddie Murphy’s Movie Stardom

Yes, it was famed producer and studio exec Jeffrey Katzenberg who, while president of production at Paramount, took a chance on Murphy as the star of 48 Hours, his first major role. “The first two weeks of 48 Hours, they wanted to fire me because they were like ‘this isn’t working,’” Murphy says. “And [Katzenberg] came to them like ‘No, don’t fire him, there’s something there’ and they didn’t fire me. and we’ve just been cool since.”

At that point, Murphy says, he “wasn’t thinking I was going to be a movie star.” His belief is that “my stuff took off the way it took off because they’d never seen a young Black person go take charge in the white world.”

Katzenberg made a multi-picture deal with Murphy when he was just 19, and one unexpected benefit of becoming a huge star at that time: Murphy found himself meeting a slew of major Hollywood legends, who were curious enough about him to ask him to lunch. “I met Brando and Charlton Heston, Sinatra — I met all those guys through them calling my agent,” Murphy says.

Everyone Has Been Misinterpreting This One Moment in Beverly Hills Cop for Decades

In an interview, film critic Elvis Mitchell talks about the moment from the 1984 movie where Murphy’s character, Axel Foley, walks by two men wearing leather outfits very similar to his infamous Raw jumpsuit. As Axel passes, he’s seen laughing at them, something Mitchell calls out as a “complex moment in pop culture” — Murphy laughing at himself.

Murphy, meanwhile, would like to re-contextualize that scene now: “Eddie Murphy’s laughing at Eddie Murphy? No, one of those guys… as he walked past, he made a weird face. I was laughing at the face he made.” The way the shot is set up, you can’t see the faces of the men walking away, so we only have Murphy’s word to go on here, but he seems reliable enough.

Eddie Murphy Is Straight-Edge

Murphy reveals that as hard as he might have partied in his youth — “nobody had as much fun as we had in the ’80s” — none of that fun was substance-based. “I’ve never even tried cocaine or touched cocaine or shit like that. I don’t drink, I don’t smoke cigarettes. I was 30 years old when I first smoked a joint.”

And of course he had opportunities to indulge. One story he shares involves him going to a blues bar at the age of 19 with John Belushi and Robin Williams. “They put some blow on a table, and I’m standing there with, you know, two heroes. And I wasn’t even curious. I was just not with it.”

Says Jamie Foxx in an interview, “He’s very introverted. [At a party], he’ll sit in the back of the room with a Coca-Cola.”

Eddie Murphy Has Yul Brynner-Related Regrets

Murphy held his 21st birthday party at the famous New York club Studio 54, and Yul Brynner, star of movies including The King and I, The Magnificent Seven, and Westworld, was also at the club that night with his wife. Brynner, at one point in the evening, asked Murphy, “How would you like to go back to my apartment with my wife and I and party?”

Only later did Murphy realize… “Did he want me to go fuck his wife? Now, I wish I would have went. The story would end better if, you know, ‘Yeah, I went back to Yul Brynner’s spot and fucked his wife and he was watching me fucking, going “et cetera et cetera”…’” The documentary punctuates that moment with a clip of Brynner from The King and I, repeating that famous line.

“There’s only one Eddie Murphy. The laughter, the legacy, the life.” Netflix has revealed the main official trailer for another new celebrity biopic documentary – this one titled Being Eddie – a comprehensive look at Eddie Murphy’s life and career. After a few years out of the spotlight, Murphy has come back recently in the last few years, starring in a bunch of movies and series and coming back for Shrek 5 sometime soon. The documentary (out on Nov. 12) gathers comedy and Hollywood legends like Dave Chappelle, Tracee Ellis Ross, Jamie Foxx, Jerry Seinfeld, Reginald Hudlin and more to celebrate the Oscar-nominated actor and his nearly 50-year career that’s seen him break barriers, invent genres, and inspire generations of talent. For the first time ever, Eddie Murphy also invites the public into his home to revisit his breathtaking body of work, all the while revealing the dazzling interior life that has long driven — and grounded — this once-in-a-century star. With appearances by Arsenio Hall, Brian Grazer, Chris Rock, Jerry Bruckheimer, John Landis, Kenan Thompson, Kevin Hart, Michael Che, Pete Davidson, Ruth Carter, & many more. Take a look below.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Angus Wall’s documentary film Being Eddie, direct from YouTube:

It goes without saying that there is only one Eddie Murphy. No other teen comedian shared a stage with Jerry Seinfeld at 17, and joined the cast of Saturday Night Live right out of high school. No actor has ever played a cop, a doctor, and a donkey — and dominated every facet of Hollywood he’s touched. Fewer still have been an A-list celebrity for over four decades and counting, and never succumbed to its darker side. Eddie’s unusual combination of explosive charisma, focused ambition, raw talent, deep-set circumspection puts him in a league of his own, and is on full display in Being Eddie. This documentary film is directed by two-time Oscar winner producer / editor filmmaker Angus Wall, making his feature directorial debut after a few other shorts previously. He won Oscars for Best Film Editing on Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo & The Social Network before getting into producing & directing. Produced by John Davis, John Fox, Charisse Hewitt-Webster, Terry Leonard, and Kent Kubena. Netflix will debut this new doc Being Eddie streaming on Netflix worldwide starting on November 12th, 2025 this fall. So who wants to watch this?

Wendy & Eddie Osefo React To Arrest, Sheriff Denies Celeb Perks

by jummy84 October 11, 2025

After law enforcement booked them on Thursday, Wendy and Eddie Osefo are reportedly out of jail and at home. The couple’s team released a statement on Friday after reports revealed the double-digit fraud charges against them. In a separate press conference on Friday, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office also addressed the charges. Officials strongly denied that the Osefos ‘Real Housewives of Potomac’ celebrity status will give them any advantage in the case!

Wendy & Eddie Osefo’s Team Shares Statement After Jail Release

Hours after news of their jail booking took over headlines, her publicist, Austin Thach, released a statement on the Osefos’ behalf. Thach confirmed to The Shade Room that Wendy and Eddie are at home. Us Weekly reported early Friday that the couple had to place a $50,000 bond each to be released. The publicist added that the couple is holding up with the support of loved ones. According to their statement, the ‘RHOP’ stars plan to have their day in court to fight the fraud case! At this time, it’s unclear whether they will be tried in court together and whether they share legal representation.

“Dr. Wendy Osefo and her husband, Edward Osefo, are back home safely with their family and in good spirits. They are grateful for the outpouring of concern and support from friends, fans, and colleagues,” said Thach. “The Osefos, alongside their legal team, look forward to their day in court. At this time, they respectfully ask for privacy as they focus on their family and the legal process ahead.”

Carroll County Sheriff Slips “Fake Housewife” Shade Into Press Conference

Meanwhile, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office isn’t planning to take it easy on Wendy and Eddie Osefo. At least, it appears that’s the energy Sheriff Jim DeWees brought to Friday’s press conference. He emphasized that Wendy and Eddie’s celebrity status as OGs on ‘Real Housewives of Potomac’ won’t get them special treatment in their fraud case. Social media went off with reactions when DeWees seemed to tease Wendy’s TV placement with a “fake housewife” comment.

“No, I don’t think we would’ve treated it any different at all,” the sheriff said in response to a reporter’s question. “I mean it was a high-dollar amount that they were alleging that was stolen…and if we believe it’s a false report we’ll investigate it the same way. So I don’t care if she’s real housewife, fake housewife or whatever she is, we would handle it the same way regardless of who she was.”

SWIPE BELOW TO SEE WHAT WAS SAID ABOUT EDDIE OSEFO’S CHARGES SPECIFICALLY.

Recap Of Osefos’ Fraud Case

Wendy and Eddie Osefo were booked on 15 and 18 charges, respectively. They’re accused of falsely reporting a burglary to the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office last April, claiming stolen luxury goods like jewelry, designer bags, and clothing. After reporting an alleged break-in, the couple submitted insurance claims to at least three companies, per Us Weekly. They cited financial losses for items they still had in their possession or had already returned to stores for full refunds. The Osefos are accused of finessing over $400,000 in insurance claims alone. Investigators found additional evidence after executing a search-and-seizure warrant on Thursday. However, they also pointed to evidence in emails, social media posts, and the crime scene notes from last year.

Eddie Vedder Covers Devo, Led Zeppelin, More at Ohana Festival: Watch

by jummy84 September 28, 2025
written by jummy84

Eddie Vedder’s annual Ohana Music Festival kicked off on Friday and the Pearl Jam frontman and the Earthlings headlined the festival’s first of three nights in Dana Point, California. It was the first time in two years he and his Earthlings bandmates — guitarists Andrew Watt, Josh Klinghoffer and Glen Hansard; Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, and bassist Chris Chaney — performed together. To mark the occasion, they delivered several covers alongside Earthling and Pearl Jam songs.

They kicked it all off with a cover of Devo’s “Gut Feeling” before launching into Pearl Jam’s “Corduroy.”

During the latter part of their set, which earlier included a cover of the Who’s “I’m One,” the band jammed out Led Zeppelin’s instrumental intro of “The Song Remains the Same” before launching into Pearl Jam’s “Rearviewmirror.” Prior to performing the songs, Vedder shouted out “all the magnificent human beings” that were playing the festival. “Just legends, so many great women on the stages all day today and through the weekend,” he said before giving props to Garbage’s Shirley Manson, Madrid’s Hinds, Jessica Dobson from Deep Sea Diver, Akira Galaxy, and Kim Deal, and he also shouted out his wife and additionally Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Karen O, who was not performing but apparently in the audience.

Following the shout-outs, Vedder shared a story about a high school administrator whose mission he said was “to ruin my life.” But music got him through. “There was this piece of music, and I’ll never forgot where I was or how loud it was, and for some reason, this piece of music — not even the words, nothing — it was like a drug,” Vedder said. “It lifted me up. It was a lift-off. I realized, you know what? Fuck that guy. And someday, he will mean nothing to you,” he said. Later, he added, “We will play this piece of music and I will let it be a reminder that music is power. Music has power. You should be responsible with the power of that music and a voice and a microphone and communicating to people that we trust and we’re grateful they can trust us … This person who had ill will for me? He didn’t win.”

They also performed a medley of the English Beat’s “Save It for Later” and Pearl Jam’s “Better Man” that featured Fitz and the Tantrums’ James King on saxophone.

Trending Stories

They closed with one of Vedder’s perennial covers, Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World,” featuring a bevy of guests, including Stereophonics’ Kelly Jones and saxophonist King.

Ohana Music Festival continues through Sunday, with Hozier headlining tonight and Green Day closing the event out on Sunday.

The Pearl Jam frontman has been running his own California-based festival since 2016, and was joined by his backing band, The Earthlings, to headline the festival’s first night.

It marked the first time in two years that he and his Earthlings bandmates – who include The Frames‘ Glen Hansard, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith and former RHCP guitarist (and current Pearl Jam touring member) Josh Klinghoffer, Jane’s Addiction bassist Chris Chaney and guitarist Andrew Watt – have performed onstage together.

To mark the occasion, they delivered a cover-heavy set alongside some Pearl Jam classics, kicking off Friday night’s (September 26) gig with a cover of DEVO’s ‘Gut Feeling’ before launching into Pearl Jam’s ‘Corduroy’.

After storming through tracks like ‘Setting Forth’ and ‘No Ceiling’, both played for the first time in years, they covered The Who’s ‘I’m One’ and jammed to the intro of Led Zeppelin’s ‘The Song Remains the Same’ ahead of playing ‘Rearviewmirror’.

Eddie Vedder at Ohana Festival 2025 played:

‘Gut Feeling’ (DEVO cover)
‘Corduroy’ (Pearl Jam song)
‘I’ll Be Waiting’
‘Long Way’
‘The Dark’
‘Setting Forth’ (first time since 2017)
‘Far Behind’
‘No Ceiling’ (first time since 2019)
‘Brother the Cloud
‘I’m One’ (The Who cover)
‘Watch Outside’ (Mono Men cover)
‘Lukin’ (Pearl Jam song)
‘Chad-O’
‘Rose of Jericho’
‘Fallout Today’
‘Save It For Later’ (The Beat cover)
‘The Song Remains the Same’ (Led Zeppelin cover)
‘Rearviewmirror’ (Pearl Jam song)
‘Isn’t It A Pity’ (George Harrison cover)
‘Porch’
‘Rockin’ in the Free World’ (Neil Young cover)

Other covers of the night included The Beat’s ‘Save It For Later’, Mono Men’s ‘Watch Outside’ and George Harrison‘s 1970 track ‘Isn’t It A Pity’, with Vedder rounding things off with Neil Young’s ‘Rockin’ in the Free World’, a longtime favourite of Vedder’s, which saw Stereophonics’ Kelly Jones and saxophonist King join him on stage.

As for Pearl Jam, they embarked on a US tour in support of their latest album, ‘Dark Matter’. The record scored a four-star review from NME last year, with Liberty Dunworth writing: “For those longing for the charismatic songwriting that first put the band on the map over three decades ago, ‘Dark Matter’ will come as a pleasant surprise.”

“Not only does it showcase Pearl Jam reclaiming the charm that first made them a force to be reckoned with back in 1991, it comes alongside some of their most impressive musicianship yet, as well as a determination to take risks after years of playing it safe.”

Eddie Vedder Covers Devo, Zeppelin At Ohana Festival

by jummy84 September 27, 2025
written by jummy84

Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder revived his side band, Earthlings, for the first time in two years last night (Sept. 26) to close the first night of his annual Ohana festival in Dana Point, Ca. The group, which also features guitarists Andrew Watt, Josh Klinghoffer and Glen Hansard, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith and bassist Chris Chaney, unveiled several new covers for the occasion.

The first was an opening run through Devo’s “Gut Feeling,” which Vedder had never played live before, while later in the show, he tacked the instrumental intro of Led Zeppelin’s “The Song Remains the Same” onto Pearl Jam’s “Rearviewmirror.” Klinghoffer even wielded a Jimmy Page-style double-necked guitar for the occasion.

Before the latter, Vedder told a long story about being tormented by a high school teacher while growing up in the San Diego area, and how music helped him overcome the fear of not graduating or being fired from a job. “There was this piece of music, and I’ll never forgot where I was or how loud it was, and for some reason, this piece of music — not even the words, nothing — it was like a drug,” Vedder said. “It lifted me up. It was a liftoff. I realized, you know what? Fuck that guy. And someday, he will mean nothing to you. You’re not going to be stopped by someone who is maybe not right. I was telling this story to a friend, and all of the sudden, he sent me back that the guy is still alive in San Diego. He’s 83. He sent me his address. My first thought, just being honest, was, I’m going to go find that guy and kick his ass, because he’s 83 and I think I can take him. But, no, violence is never the right thing. Never. But, we will play this piece of music and I will let it be the reminder that music is power. Music has power. This person who had ill will for me? He didn’t win.”

Elsewhere during the set, Vedder played full-band versions of songs such as “Setting Forth” and “No Ceiling” from his 2007 Into the Wild soundtrack with Earthlings for the first time. Five cuts from his 2022 solo album Earthling also appeared, as did covers of the Who’s “I’m One,” the Mono Men’s “Watch Outside” and George Harrison’s “Isn’t It a Pity.”

In another communal moment, Vedder welcomed his daughters Olivia and Harper to sing on a medley of the English Beat’s “Save It for Later” and Pearl Jam’s “Better Man,” which is usually performed in the reverse order. Vocalist Sharlotte Gibson and Fitz and the Tantrums saxophonist James King also lent a hand, and returned for the finale with guests such as Stereophonics’ Kelly Jones for Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World.”

Ohana continues today and tomorrow with performances by Hozier, Leon Bridges, Green Day, Cage the Elephant and Wet Leg.

“We’ve now reached what you might call… the moment of crisis.” Republic Pictures has unveiled the main official trailer for contained thriller movie titled All the Devils Are Here, marking the feature directorial debut of music video director Barnaby Roper. The film just premiered at the 2025 Edinburgh Film Festival up in Scotland, and will be released to watch on VOD starting in September in a few more weeks. Secluded in the middle of Dartmoor, four thieves find themselves hiding out with nothing to do but count the money and time to kill. After a heist, four criminals lay low in a remote safehouse, waiting for orders. As paranoia builds, one thing becomes clear—the real threat may not be outside, but right in there among them. The film stars BAFTA-nominated Eddie Marsan, Sam Claflin, Burn Gorman, breakout star Tienne Simon, Suki Waterhouse and Rory Kinnear. So who is who, and what is what? This is massively impressive cast for what looks like a tiny indie thriller set mostly at one location – a rundown old house. Take a look below.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Barnaby Roper’s film All the Devils Are Here, from YouTube:

A taut psychological crime thriller where guilt festers, loyalties shift, and the codes that bind men begin to break. When a group of London criminals retreat to a rural hideout, it’s meant to be a brief stay. But as days drag on, tensions rise and control begins to slip. Eddie Marsan & Sam Claflin deliver commanding performances in this stylish and brooding British thriller. Blending tightly controlled violence with quiet reflection, this is a gripping portrait of moral unravelling building towards an explosive reckoning. All the Devils Are Here is directed by British filmmaker Barnaby Roper, making his feature directorial debut after many other short films & music videos previously. The screenplay is written by John Patrick Dover. Produced by Ben LeClair and Leopold Hughes. This recently premiered at the 2025 Edinburgh Film Festival earlier this month. Paramount / Republic Pictures will debut Roper’s All the Devils Are Here film in select US theaters + on VOD starting September 26th, 2025 coming up. Anyone interested in this? Look good?
