Jack DeJohnette, Towering Jazz Drummer and Bandleader, Dies at 83

by jummy84 October 27, 2025
written by jummy84

Jack DeJohnette, the jazz drummer, pianist, and bandleader who played on Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew and worked closely with Sonny Rollins, Keith Jarrett, and many other jazz luminaries, has died. His longtime label ECM Records confirmed the news, and his personal assistant told The Guardian the cause of death was congestive heart failure. DeJohnette was 83 years old.

Born in Chicago, in 1942, DeJohnette grew up in a mostly segregated neighborhood, raised primarily by his grandmother and poet mother. From the age of five or six, he studied traditional piano with a neighborhood teacher; back home, his uncle was filling the house with jazz records by the likes of Duke Ellington and Billie Holliday. When that uncle, Roy Wood, became the first Black news announcer on a white Chicago radio station, DeJohnette gained access to an endless supply of jazz records that fueled an early infatuation with the genre. In a newly integrated high school at the dawn of rock’n’roll, he sang doo-wop and played in dance bands—occasionally on acoustic bass—formed by students exposed to a network of legendary Chicago jazz and blues labels like Chess and Vee Jay.

When a drummer friend left his kit in DeJohnette’s basement, he took up playing along to his uncle’s Max Roach, Clifford Brown, and Charlie Parker records and discovered he was a natural. Kicked out of high school for skipping class, he took up serious music study and played with a local quintet specializing in Thelonious Monk and Art Blakey arrangements. When his grandmother died, he bought a car, a drum set, and a Wurlitzer electric piano and hustled solo keyboard gigs at Chicago bars, practicing in the daytime for three hours apiece on the drums and piano.

His growing curiosity and expertise brought him into the orbit of Chicago’s avant-garde scene. After watching Sun Ra and His Arkestra rehearse at a nearby tavern, DeJohnette was invited into the fold and played drums for the outfit in an ad-hoc arrangement that continued into the 1960s as his status grew. Sun Ra and a new generation of jazz masters—particularly Miles Davis and John Coltrane—were coming into their own as composers, and DeJohnette would catch their shows at local club McKee Fitcher’s. “I’d go almost every night to hear Coltrane,” he told the Smithsonian in 2011, “and it was… what can I say? It was the most amazing experience of hearing music.” One night, when Coltrane drummer Elvin Jones was late for a set, the club owner yelled at Coltrane to “Let Jack DeJohnette play.” He joined the band for three songs—“a great physical and spiritual experience,” DeJohnette said. “John was like a train. He was like a magnet and you felt this pull.”

RUSH Reveal How They Chose Anika Nilles as Their New Drummer

by jummy84 October 6, 2025
written by jummy84

RUSH surprised fans on Monday morning with the announcement of a 2026 North American tour, marking their first shows in 11 years. Even more surprising may have been their choice of drummer to fill the shoes of the late Neil Peart: the relatively unknown Anika Nilles.

Interestingly, RUSH frontman Geddy Lee first mentioned Nilles’ name in a 2023 interview with The Guardian, saying, “I heard this drummer the other day, I think her name is Anika. She played on the last Jeff Beck tour and I thought was she was terrific.”

On Sunday night, October 5th, at a press event at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland (as transcribed by Ultimate Classic Rock), Lee revealed how Nilles became RUSH’s new drummer.

“My bass tech, Skully was working with Jeff Beck and he was on tour,” began Lee. “Sadly, before Jeff passed away, he was on tour with him for a few years, and on the last tour, he was playing with this drummer named Anika Nilles, an incredible drummer, and he would come home, he would rave about her, What a brilliant player she was, and great person, blah, blah, blah…”

He continued, “So I kind of looked her up, and she’s all over YouTube. She’s fairly well known in her own world of music. And then we started talking about playing again, so I said, check her out. Maybe that’s an interesting way to go. And so one thing led to another, and when we made the decision, we wanted to see if it would work.”

Lee went on to say that he and guitarist Alex Lifeson didn’t exactly know what their intentions were when they brought Nilles in to jam with them, even likening it to an “experiment.”

Rush Announces Reunion Tour To Celebrate Life Of Drummer Neil Peart

by jummy84 October 6, 2025
written by jummy84

Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson, co-founders of the classic rock band Rush, have announced the band’s first tour in 11 years. The 2026 “Fifty Something” tour will, in the words of the band, celebrate Rush’s “music, legacy and the life of late drummer and lyricist Neil Peart.”

The tour, with German musician Anika Nilles taking drum duties, launches Sunday June 7 at Los Angeles’ Kia Forum, the first of two nights there.

See below for full tour itinerary.

In a lengthy statement (read it in full below), Lee said, “It’s been over 10 years since Alex and I have performed the music of RUSH alongside our fallen bandmate and friend Neil. A lifetime’s worth of songs that we had put our cumulative hearts and souls into writing, recording and playing together onstage. And so, after all that has gone down since that last show, Alex and I have done some serious soul searching and come to the decision that we fucking miss it, and that it’s time for a celebration of 50-something years of RUSH music. So in 2026, my BFF Lerxst (aka Alex Lifeson) and I are going to hit the road once again to pay tribute to our past and to Neil by performing a vast selection of RUSH songs in a handful of cities. No small task, because as we all know Neil was irreplaceable.”

Peart died in January 2020 of glioblastoma.

The 2026 tour is being undertaken with the full support of Peart’s widow Carrie Nuttall-Peart and daughter Olivia Peart, who said in a statement, “We are thrilled to support the Fifty Something tour, celebrating a band whose music has resonated and inspired fans for generations, and to honor Neil’s extraordinary legacy as both a drummer and lyricist.”

After the two dates in Los Angeles, the Fifty Something tour will then go to Mexico City for one show, followed by two-night stands in Fort Worth, Chicago, New York and Toronto. The tour ends on September 17 with a single concert in Cleveland.

The band also announced today a 50-track super deluxe anthology, RUSH 50, available in five distinct configurations, including the (1) Super Deluxe Edition, (2) RUSH Store Exclusive Super Deluxe Edition, (3) 7-LP Deluxe Edition, (4) 4-CD Deluxe Edition, and (5) Digital Edition. The career-spanning anthology includes the first-ever reissue of their 1973 debut single and concludes with a live recording the final song Lee, Lifeson, and Peart played together during the 2015 R40 Tour closer at The Forum.

Among the band’s many hits are “Tom Sawyer,” “Fly By Night” and “New World Man.”

Here is Lee’s full statement:

“It’s been over 10 years since Alex and I have performed the music of RUSH alongside our fallen bandmate and friend Neil. No small task, because as we all know Neil was irreplaceable.

“Yet life is full of surprises, and we have been introduced to another remarkable person; an incredible drummer and musician who is adding another chapter to our story while continuing her own fascinating musical journey. Her name is Anika Nilles, and we could not be more excited to introduce her to our loyal and dedicated RUSH fanbase, whom, we know, will give her every chance to live up to that near impossible role. Before we hit the stage, we also hope to add another musician or two to expand our sound a wee bit and free up Alex and I, in order to show off some of our new fancy dance steps.

Lerxst, Anika and myself, along with many of our longstanding crew members have been hard at work rehearsing and designing the kind of RUSH show you’ve grown accustomed to expect from us. We dearly hope you will come along and help us celebrate our history together.”

And here is the Carrie Nuttall-Peart and Olivia Peart statement:

“We are thrilled to support the Fifty Something tour, celebrating a band whose music has resonated and inspired fans for generations, and to honor Neil’s extraordinary legacy as both a drummer and lyricist.

“Neil’s musicianship was singular. Compositions of intricacy and power that expanded what rhythm itself could express. As both drummer and lyricist, he was irreplaceable. Inimitable in his artistry, and unmatched in the depth and imagination he brought to the lyrics that inspired and moved so many, he profoundly shaped how fans connected with him and the band, giving voice and meaning to their own lives.

“As the band enters this new chapter, it promises to be truly unforgettable. We are excited to see how their new vision unfolds, and to hear this legendary music played live once again.”

Watch Feeder reunite with drummer Mark Richardson at Brixton Academy

by jummy84 September 29, 2025
written by jummy84

Feeder have kicked off their latest run of UK tour dates, and brought out former drummer Mark Richardson. Check out footage and the setlist below.

The new run of dates are part of the band’s ‘Comfort In Sound’ tour, which sees them celebrate their classic 2002 album.

That album landed on the UK Top 10 upon its release and spent more than two years on the UK Independent Albums Chart Top 50. It was their first release since the tragic death of original drummer Jon Lee, and saw Mark Richardson join the band as sticksman.

Feeder kicked off the anniversary tour dates for the record last week, and shows have so far included a slot at the O2 Academy in Leeds and the O2 Brixton Academy in London.

The latter saw them reunite with Richardson, who joined as drummer in 2002 and played on ‘Pushing The Senses’, ‘The Singles’ and ‘Silent Cry’, as well as the aforementioned ‘Comfort In Sound’. He left the band in 2009 to rejoin Skunk Anansie, and was replaced by Karl Brazil.

He appeared with the band in London, with frontman Grant Nicholas introducing him to the audience and describing him as “the hardest-hitting drummer I’ve ever, ever worked with.”

“Respect! How are you getting on Mark? Everybody say hello to Mark,” he added, also encouraging the crowd to chant his name. “Want to hear one with him? How about this one?” Nicholas said, before launching into fan favourite song ‘Feeling A Moment’.

He also stayed to play ‘Pushing The Senses’. Check out more footage and the setlist below.

The Feeder setlist in London was:

‘Just the Way I’m Feeling’
‘Come Back Around’
‘Helium’
‘Child in You’
‘Comfort in Sound’
‘Forget About Tomorrow’
‘Summer’s Gone’
‘Godzilla’
‘Quick Fade’
‘Find the Colour’
‘Love Pollution’
‘Moonshine’
‘High’
‘Feeling a Moment’ (with Mark Richardson on drums)
‘Pushing the Senses’ (with Mark Richardson on drums)
‘Feel It Again’
‘Opaque’
‘Buck Rogers’
‘Just a Day’

As well as announcing this current tour, February this year also saw Feeder announce a re-release of the ‘Comfort In Sound’ album. It dropped on September 12 via BMG, and included new orchestral remixes of ‘Just The Way I’m Feeling’ and ‘Forget About Tomorrow’, as well as a reimagining of ‘Godzilla II’.

The current 2025 tour continues next month, with shows in Manchester, Glasgow, Bristol and Birmingham, on October 2, 3, 9, and 11, respectively. Visit here for tickets.

As aforementioned, the 2002 release was their first album was their first without Jon Lee, who died by suicide in January 2002, aged 33. His death came shortly after the band finished a tour supporting Stereophonics across Europe, and numerous famous faces from the music world paid their respects at his funeral.

Foo Fighters debuted their new drummer, Ilan Rubin (formerly of Nine Inch Nails, who now have Foo Fighters’ former drummer Josh Freese behind the kit), at a surprise concert in California over the weekend. See photos of the performance below.

The last-minute gig took place at the Fremont Theater in San Luis Obispo, CA, marking the band’s first performance in over a year. Frontman Dave Grohl promised more “surprises” in the near future, so fans might want to keep an eye out for more chances to see for themselves how Rubin blends into the band.

Foo Fighters have a run of shows in Asia and Mexico scheduled for the fall, and you can get tickets here. You can also find the full setlist and videos from Rubin’s debut performance with Grohl and co. here.

The Foo Fighters have officially introduced Ilan Rubin as their new drummer, replacing Josh Freese. The news first broke in late July, but fans got their first real confirmation during a surprise pop-up show at the Fremont Theater in San Luis Obispo on September 13.

A clip of Dave Grohl introducing Rubin on stage spread like wildfire on social media. The video, shared on Reddit, has received millions of views. See the video on Reddit here.

Rubin, 36, has toured with Nine Inch Nails since 2009 and built a reputation as a versatile, hard-hitting drummer. He’s also played with Angels & Airwaves, Paramore, and fronts his own project, The New Regime. In 2020, he made history as the youngest musician inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as reported by The San Diego Union-Tribune.

Foo Fighters are headed out for shows in Jakarta, Singapore, and Mexico City this October. Whether Rubin is staying long-term or just filling in for the tour hasn’t been made clear.

Foo Fighter’s ex drummer Josh Freese

Freese, who joined Foo Fighters in 2023 after Taylor Hawkins’ death, was fired back in May. In an Instagram post, he admitted being “shocked and disappointed,” saying: “In my 40 years of drumming professionally, I’ve never been let go from a band.”

He added that he supported the band’s decision and valued his two years on and off stage with them.

Days later, he poked fun at the situation with a “Top 10 reasons Josh got booted from the Foo Fighters” list, joking that he once whistled “My Hero” for a week on tour and “never even tried growing a beard.”

In a twist, Freese will now replace Rubin as the touring drummer for Nine Inch Nails’ “Peel It Back” tour. Rubin had initially been slated to play, but stepped down after committing to Foo Fighters. NIN confirmed Freese’s return with a post on X, completing the unexpected drummer swap.

As the band heads into their fall tour, fans will be eager to see how Rubin settles into one of rock’s most scrutinized and celebrated gigs.

Foo Fighters Play First Show in Over a Year, Unveil New Drummer Ilan Rubin

Foo Fighters returned to the stage for their first show in more than a year on Saturday night (September 13th) at the Fremont Theater in San Luis Obispo, California. The last-minute concert was announced the night before, with tickets selling out immediately.

The gig marked the debut of new Foo Fighers drummer Ilan Rubin, following reports earlier this summer that he had replaced Josh Freese in essentially what amounted a trade between the Foos and Nine Inch Nails.

Grohl and company certainly gave fans their money’s worth at the intimate gig, playing a 25-song set, kicking off with “All My Life,” as Rubin immediately lived up to the challenge with the drum-heavy song.

At one point in the show, Grohl told the audience, “I finally get the opportunity to say, ‘Ladies and gentlemen, will you please welcome… the most badass motherfucker, Ilan Rubin, is playing drums in the Foo Fighters right now.’ It’s official. You can stamp the passport.”

The Foos broke out a handful of tunes for the first time in a decade or more, including “Have It All” (last performed in 2015), a cover of Late!’s “Winnebago” (not played since 2014), and “Exhausted” (previously performed in 2014).

The rest of the set featured favorites like “Times Like These,” “The Pretender,” “My Hero,” and “Best of You,” and closed out with the classic “Everlong.”

The one-off concert precedes a series of dates in Asia in October and Mexico in November, with tickets to those concerts available here. During the show last night, Grohl revealed that the band had some other surprises coming up in the near future.

The band returned for their first show since 2024 last night (September 14), with a small gig at the 900-capacity Fremont Theater in San Luis Obispo, California.

They announced the gig only one day before they took to the stage, telling fans on social media that tickets were only available in-person at the venue’s box office from 8am the day of the show.

It marked their first gig since drummer Josh Freese announced that he had departed the Foos after they “decided to go in a different direction with their drummer”. Freese stepped in as a touring drummer back in 2023, following the death of Taylor Hawkins.

The group then reportedly enlisted Ilan Rubin – essentially swapping with Nine Inch Nails for their ex-touring drummer Freese.

Now, Dave Grohl has officially confirmed Rubin’s place in the band, telling the crowd: “Everybody else has said it, I finally get the opportunity to say, ladies and gentlemen, will you please welcome, the most badass motherfucker, Ilan Rubin, is playing drums in the Foo Fighters. It’s official.”

After the show, the Foos also updated their Facebook profile picture with an image of them with Rubin. Check out footage from the gig, and the full setlist, below.

It comes after the band seemingly began the rollout of their next era earlier this month, by posting a shot of the six-piece band’s legs and feet standing together in a circle.

“Foo Fighters Assemble!!!” they captioned the snap. They then hinted at an imminent announcement, writing: “Make sure you’re subscribed to the newsletter for info you won’t want to miss… just sayin’…” Sign up here.

The band’s 11th and latest album, ‘But Here We Are’, was released in 2023. It marked their first material since the death of drummer Taylor Hawkins the previous year, and saw them enlist Josh Freese as a touring sticksman.

This July, Dave Grohl and co. marked their 30th anniversary by sharing a new single called ‘Today’s Song’.

Their gig last night marks their first this year, ahead of more shows scheduled in Indonesia, Japan, Singapore and Mexico next month and into November – suggesting new material could emerge soon.

They reportedly cancelled some European dates for 2025 last December, following the news that Grohl had “recently become the father of a new baby daughter, born outside of [his] marriage”.

Freese recently addressed his sacking from Foo Fighters, explaining: “Looking back, it was probably more an issue with their management.” However, the drummer said the Foos’ material “wasn’t music that I really resonated with”.

Upon sharing ‘Today’s Song’, Grohl thanked every former member of the band for their contributions throughout the years. He praised “the thunderous wizardry of Josh Freese”, and said Hawkins was “still in everything we do, everywhere we go, forever”.

Baroness' founding drummer Allen Blickle has died, aged 42

Baroness’ founding drummer Allen Blickle has died, aged 42

by jummy84 September 9, 2025
written by jummy84

Baroness have confirmed the death of founding drummer Allen Blickle, aged 42.
“It breaks my heart to have to share the news that my dear friend, creative partner and former bandmate Allen Blickle passed away a few days ago,” Baroness frontman John Dyer Baizley wrote in a statement on social media.

“I’m still in shock that he’s gone. We ask for understanding as his family and this band process his passing and grieve his loss. Allen, I love you and miss you. I treasure every moment we shared.”

Baizley’s confirmation comes a day after rumours began circulating of Allen Blickle’s death. While a cause of death has yet to be made public, Laura Pleasants of the band Kylesa wrote on Monday, suggesting that Blickle was ill: “I was so heartbroken… finding out how the past month was. I am just gutted, dude. We all thought you had this thing beat. Fuck, we were supposed to hang out when i got back from tour…  Gone too soon my friend. I’m glad you are at peace and no longer in pain.”

Blickle formed Baroness in 2003 alongside vocalist/guitarist Baizley, bassist Summer Welch, and guitarist Tim Loose. Loose left the band in 2003, and was replaced by Blickle’s brother Brian, who was later replaced by Pete Adams in 2008.

Allen Blickle featured on the band’s acclaimed first three albums: 2007’s ‘Red’, 2009’s ‘Blue’ and 2012’s ‘Yellow & Green’. In 2013, the band were involved in a bus crash while out on tour, resulting in the vehicle falling over 30 feet. The crash resulted in Allen Blickle and then-bassist Matt Maggioni fracturing their vertebrae and leaving the band the following year.

Reflecting on the accident and his recovery to The Fader in 2013, Blickle said his brush with death forced him to re-evaluate his life and revealed that his relationship with his former bandmates strained after his departure: “After the accident, there was space put between us that I regret to say was mostly my fault. I was in some way pushing myself in another direction. I didn’t know how to handle the horrible situation we all went through, but who does?

“It’s not easy and continues to be somewhat difficult. I do miss playing with them and I have relayed to them that when the time is right, I would like to be on the road again. It’s not up to me at this point. I just don’t want any resentment to build between any of us. We are old friends and have worked really hard together for years. Friends first — that’s the most important thing to remember.”

Following his departure from Baroness, Blickle would drum for Romantic Dividends, A Place to Bury Strangers and Alpaca. Most recently, he worked in TV and film as a composter and sound design artist. Some of his biggest works include Netflix’s 2020 series We Are The Champions.

Watch Fred Durst confront Instagram drummer for “leaking” new Limp Bizkit song

by jummy84 September 5, 2025
written by jummy84

Limp Bizkit‘s Fred Durst has “confronted” an Instagram drummer for supposedly leaking new music from the band on social media.

On Thursday (September 4), a clip was shared to their official account that sees social media star Kristina Rybalchenko playing a beat reminiscent of the band’s ‘Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water’ era, featuring lines: “When you’re hot, you’re hot, when you’re not, you’re not.”

The whole thing, however, is soon revealed to be a marketing tactic by the band, as the Los Angeles-based drummer is then interrupted by frontman Fred Durst himself, who pops around the door and says, “Kristina, that’s our new song, it’s not out yet, how did you get that? Please don’t put it on the internet!”

It comes after the band confirmed that they were back in the studio to work on new music last year. Their last album was 2021’s ‘Still Sucks’, itself their first LP in a decade. In a three-star review, NME described it as a “lean and self-aware party-starter of a sixth album” and wrote: “‘Still Sucks’ doesn’t feel laboured or overthought and never overstays its welcome.

“Limp Bizkit aren’t out to rewrite their history or reach a new generation. They don’t care if you still think they suck – they still know how to have a good time, and won’t stop rollin’.”

Last month, Limp Bizkit headlined Reading Festival, scoring a four-star review with NME. “There is no mistaking that the energy the band harness during their hour-long set has been meticulously perfected over the years to make this the most quintessential ‘Limp Bizkit show’ possible,” wrote Liberty Dunworth.

“Their set may not have all the bells and whistles of headliners Bring Me The Horizon. But between cheeky interludes of Metallica and Pantera classics, a surprisingly heartfelt cover of The Who’s ‘Behind Blue Eyes’, and inviting a young one fan to rip through a ‘Full Nelson’ duet, this is still one of the most engaging sets of the night.

Elsewhere, Durst’s ex-wife Kseniya Beryazina put her dress from the former couple’s
wedding up for auction earlier this month.
