‘Steal This Story, Please’ Review: Amy Goodman Documentary

by jummy84 April 9, 2026
written by jummy84

“Democracy Now!” is not a program you seek out when you’re on the fence about the issues. The daily nonprofit radio show, now entering its four decade on both the real and digital airwaves, is as unapologetically progressive as they come. Host and producer Amy Goodman and her team of reporters clearly subscribe to a worldview that the world is divided into a battle between oppressors and those they oppress, and their aggressive lines of questioning are catnip for an audience that believes the mainstream media is too centrist. It’s less a place for arguments and debates than a team headquarters that tirelessly tries to advance a cause.

Fatih Akin, Diane Kruger at the “Amrum” Photocall during The 78th Cannes Film Festival at Palais des Festivals on May 16, 2025 in Cannes, France.

It’s unsurprising, then, that the new documentary about Goodman plays like more of a greatest hits compilation than a serious attempt at capturing the essence of a person. Carl Deal and Tia Lessin’s “Steal This Story, Please!” recaps Goodman’s entire career, from her famous interview with then-President Bill Clinton in which she criticized him for passing NAFTA and “shifting the Democratic Party to the right” to her subsequent protests of the Bush and Trump administrations and her unwavering support of Palestine since October 7th.

Much like “Democracy Now!,” which does not accept advertisers and survives on donations from foundations and individual viewers, “Steal This Story, Please!” is a grassroots effort. The filmmakers are self-distributing the film this spring following a festival run that began at Telluride, and the audience will be overwhelmingly comprised of Goodman’s politically engaged fans. The film’s content suggests that Deal and Lessin are primarily focused on rallying the true believers to get even more involved, not converting anyone to Goodman’s worldview.

Given those parameters, it’s hard to imagine the film not succeeding at its goals. “Steal This Story, Please!” is a profile in courage, presenting Goodman as an unrelenting voice of the voiceless who is never afraid to get arrested or make an enemy in her pursuit of telling her truth. Her career is filled with the kinds of on-the-ground adventures that should inspire plenty of wide-eyed journalism students who haven’t yet realized how much of the job is just staring at laptop screens. Anyone looking for permission to protest, organize, and get their hands dirty for the things they believe in will likely leave the screenings feeling invigorated.

But the components that make “Steal This Story, Please!” a useful activism tool also turn it into an underwhelming piece of art. The film is only interested in portraying Goodman as an unambiguous hero, robbing us of the chance to explore the nuances of a complicated person who has participated in decades of history. There’s not much room to explore how Goodman has evolved, if she ever got something wrong, or express any critical thought about how her bomb-throwing approach fits into the media ecosystem.

There’s no denying that we’re living through dark times, and saying that a journalist subscribes to a simple Good vs. Evil worldview is less damning of an accusation than it would have been 15 years ago. But given how ideologically motivated Goodman is, her story could have been better told by a filmmaker with less interest in adding their thumb to the scale. A less fawning portrait of Goodman could have still reached the same progressive conclusions while giving us a better understanding of what makes her tick and why she continues to survive in a media landscape that never stops evolving. Instead, we’re left to try and fill in those gaps ourselves.

But “Steal This Story, Please!” is the kind of film that has no problem sacrificing artistic merit if it means inspiring a few more people to get out and protest. It’s not a coincidence that Deal and Lessin are rolling it out in the months leading up to a crucial set of midterm elections in America, and the only fair way to grade such a mission-based film is to see how much it helps accomplish its goals. On that front, we’ll all have to nervously wait a few months before we can deliver a proper verdict.

Grade: C+

“Steal This Story, Please” opens at IFC Center in New York on Friday, April 10 and in Los Angeles on April 17, with a national expansion to follow.

Documentary Not As Hard To Watch As You Fear

by jummy84 December 7, 2025
written by jummy84

Dog Warriors is about South Korean markets that sell dog meat. It explores the dog farms that slaughter the animals in inhumane ways. And yet, director Andrew Abrahams assures viewers the film is not as traumatizing as the description makes it sound. At Deadline’s Contenders Documentary event, Abrahams told Matt Carey how he balanced presenting the subject matter so that viewers would actually stick with the film and learn about the issue.

“On one hand, we want to show the reality,” Abrahams said. “On the other hand, we don’t want to scare people away. One of the principal issues around this film is that people love dogs so much that they don’t want to see them suffering. Even the thought of them suffering is too, it’s almost too much for them. They can see people being killed or other animals, but dogs, it’s way too close to home.”

Abrahams said he did take out some of the goriest scenes he captured. Nevertheless, the subject matter makes it a hard sell.

“We get a lot of people who are afraid to see the film, and we hear that a lot,” Abrahams said. “We’ve heard that from distributors, even — that they’re afraid that people will be afraid to see the film. I call it ‘the must-see film you thought you couldn’t watch,’ that it’s something that you’re afraid of watching, but it’s not that difficult to get through.”

Your mileage may vary, however.

“I did see it at a film festival recently,” Abrahams said. “Somebody walked out of the film at one particularly more difficult section.”

RELATED: Contenders Documentary — Deadline’s Complete Coverage

Janette Warren alerted Abrahams to the practice. He wanted to make a film to make viewers aware about it, but did not just want to make “an issue film.” A group of combat veterans aiming to save as many dogs as possible proved a way in.

“I don’t wanna make advocacy films,” Abrahams said. “I like that a film is nuanced. I want the viewer to come away to make their own decisions. I want them to struggle with the complexities of an issue. As much as it’s sort of clear where my sympathies lie, my sympathies also lie with the dog meat farmers. This has been their trade for their whole life. They don’t know anything different. So it will affect their livelihoods. I have sympathy for that. It’s not black and white.”

As Dog Warriors is released into the world following its premiere at the 2024 Raindance Film Festival, things are changing in South Korea. Independent of the film’s subjects, the government has banned the sale and consumption of dog meat, which will go into effect in 2027.

“There’s a lot of pushback from the Dog Meat Association,” Abrahams said. “They’re threatening to cause all sorts of mayhem if that law goes through. But it did pass. It didn’t happen because of our veterans, although we’d like to think they played a part, that all the people came together to make that change happen.”

Check back Tuesday for the panel video.

Rolling Stone Films and Documentary+ Acquire The Spiritual Advisor

by jummy84 November 13, 2025
written by jummy84

Rolling Stone Films and Documentary+ have acquired “The Spiritual Advisor,” a 23-minute documentary that will premiere at DOC NYC on November 16 at the IFC Center. The film, directed by Joel Fendelman and produced by James Chase Sanchez, follows Rev. Jeff Hood, a priest and death-penalty activist who serves as a spiritual advisor to death row inmates.

Filmed over five days in September 2024, the documentary tracks Hood as he travels to Oklahoma to advocate for clemency for Emmanuel Littlejohn, a man scheduled for execution. The film is based on the March 2025 Rolling Stone story “The Last Face Death Row Inmates See” by Brenna Ehrlich (you can read it right here).

Sirāt

The documentary captures Hood’s work on two fronts: attempting to prevent the execution while simultaneously preparing Littlejohn for death if the clemency effort fails. Fendelman’s camera follows Hood through prison visits, prayer sessions, and meetings with state officials.

Hood, an Old Catholic priest based in Little Rock, has been arrested multiple times for his activism against capital punishment. In 2024, he served as spiritual advisor to Kenneth Smith, who was executed in Alabama using nitrogen gas — the state’s first execution by that method.

“Joel Fendelman has crafted a film that examines the intersection of belief, justice, and conscience,” said Alexandra Dale, Head of Rolling Stone Films, in an official statement.

Fendelman previously directed “Man on Fire” in 2017. The new documentary was produced by A Pound of Snow Productions in association with Rolling Stone Films and Documentary+. After its premiere at DOC NYC, “The Spiritual Advisor” will stream early next year on Rolling Stone’s website and YouTube channel.

Rolling Stone Films’ recent work includes “Little Richard: I Am Everything,” which won an Emmy for Outstanding Arts & Culture Documentary in 2023.

Caroline Flack revealed to have had plans to work on a documentary of her own

by jummy84 November 10, 2025
written by jummy84

A new Disney+ original documentary, Caroline Flack: Search for the Truth, aims to correct the narrative about the late TV presenter, amid an investigation from her mother Christine, who sets out to find the truth about her daughter’s final days.

In fact, this documentary is part of a story that Caroline wanted the public to hear and had initiated plans to work on in the days before her death and after her arrest.

The former Love Island host took her own life in 2020, aged 40, weeks before she was due to face trial on assault charges, to which she pleaded not guilty.

The alleged victim, her boyfriend Lewis Burton, did not support prosecution.

The coverage of the presenter’s departure from Love Island and her legal issues were widely criticised following her death.

In the two-parter, now available to watch on Disney+, voice notes from the late star are featured throughout, and in one particular recording, she can be heard telling one of her friends she was thinking about making a documentary about her ordeal: “I had an idea like, sorry, I know you’re in a shower, I think I should make a documentary about all of this. What do you think?”

Flack’s friend Mollie opened up about the days leading up to Flack’s death, saying she felt as though the TV presenter was “getting stronger”.

“I could tell that she was getting stronger because she was talking about doing a documentary,” she explained. “She was saying, ‘I just really want to get out, like, what’s happened and my side of everything.’ And so it felt like she was turning a corner and, you know, we felt that actually the case was going to be dropped.”

Dov Freedman, the CEO and founder of Curious Films, the production company behind the documentary, shared that Caroline was “adamant about wanting to set the record straight and combat the lies that were being told about her”.

He shared that he, along with his business partner Charlie Russell, had met with Caroline and her agents “to see if we all got on and what the doc could look like”.

“Caroline spoke candidly about why she wanted to make a film and the real story she wanted the world to know, and also how hard it was watching the stories spread knowing they weren’t accurate,” he said.

He continued: “She also spoke very lovingly about her family, especially her mum, Chris [Christine], and suggested we start filming a few days later in Norfolk. The meeting went well, and we were green lit a few hours later, suddenly, that doc never happened, as the devastating news of Caroline’s death hit the world just a few days later.

“We didn’t know if Christine knew that Caroline was about to embark on a project with us, but we just felt compelled to write to her and send our condolences so we couldn’t imagine the pain her and the family must be going through.”

Christine agreed to take part in this new documentary as she felt like she needed a bigger platform to find the answers she was looking for.

“[This is] the story that Caroline wanted to make when we met her over five years ago and says everything that she wanted to say.”

Caroline Flack: Search for the Truth airs on Monday 10th November on Disney+. You can sign up to Disney+ from £5.99 a month now.

BBC director general Tim Davie and News boss Deborah Turness resign over edited Trump documentary

by jummy84 November 9, 2025
written by jummy84

BBC director general Tim Davie and BBC News boss Deborah Turness have resigned from the corporation.

It comes following concerns about impartiality, including how a speech by US President Donald Trump was edited in an episode of Panorama.

The concerns were over clips spliced together from sections of Trump’s speech on January 6, 2021 to make it appear he told supporters he was going to walk to the US Capitol with them to “fight like hell” in the documentary Trump: A Second Chance?, which was broadcast by the BBC the week before last year’s US election.

Announcing his resignation Davie said: “In these increasingly polarised times, the BBC is of unique value and speaks to the very best of us. It helps make the UK a special place; overwhelmingly kind, tolerant and curious.

BBC’s director general Tim Davie and News CEO Deborah Turness quit after Trump speech edithttps://t.co/oxEamyDKD2

— ITV News (@itvnews) November 9, 2025

“Like all public organisations, the BBC is not perfect, and we must always be open, transparent and accountable.

“While not being the only reason, the current debate around BBC News has understandably contributed to my decision. Overall, the BBC is delivering well, but there have been some mistakes made and as Director-General I have to take ultimate responsibility.”

He said his departure will not be immediate and that he is “working through” timings to ensure for an “orderly transition” over the coming months.

Mr Davie, who had a career in marketing and finance before joining the BBC’s marketing team in 2005, was previously acting director-general from November 2012 until April 2013.

In her letter of resignation, Turness said the “ongoing controversy” around the edition of Panorama “has reached a stage where it is causing damage to the BBC – an institution that I love”.

She added: “As the CEO of BBC News and Current Affairs, the buck stops with me – and I took the decision to offer my resignation to the Director-General last night.

“In public life leaders need to be fully accountable, and that is why I am stepping down. While mistakes have been made, I want to be absolutely clear recent allegations that BBC News is institutionally biased are wrong.”

BBC Chair, Samir Shah said it was “a sad day for the BBC” and praised Davie for being an “outstanding Director-General for the last five years”.

Shah added: “He has had the full support of me and the Board throughout. However, I understand the continued pressure on him, personally and professionally, which has led him to take this decision today. The whole Board respects the decision and the reasons for it.

“Tim has given 20 years of his life to the BBC. He is a devoted and inspirational leader and an absolute believer in the BBC and public service broadcasting. He has achieved a great deal. Foremost, under his tenure, the transformation of the BBC to meet the challenges in a world of unprecedented change and competition is well underway.

“Personally, I will miss his stamina, good humour and resilience and I will miss working with him. I wish him and his family the very best for the future.”

He also said Turness had “acted with integrity in challenging circumstances and leaves a strong legacy from which to build for the many millions around the world who rely on and trust the voice of BBC News every day”.

During his time in charge of the BBC, Davie dealt with a number of high-profile controversies including a row over former Match Of The Day host Gary Lineker’s sharing of his political views, Huw Edwards being convicted of making indecent images of children, and the BBC’s broadcasting of Bob Vylan‘s controversial Glastonbury performance.

At this year’s event, the punk duo delivered a controversial performance on the West Holts Stage, using their platform to voice their support for the people of Palestine, call out the Israeli military and criticise the BBC, as well as the UK and US governments.

In the most provocative moment of the set, Vylan told the huge crowd, “have you heard this one?”, before leading a chant of “death, death to the IDF”. It led to a criminal investigation from Avon and Somerset Police, as well as the cancellation of multiple international shows and the revocation of their US visas.

Having recently given his first in-depth interview on the subject on The Louis Theroux Podcast, in which he said he was “not regretful” of his remarks, frontman Vylan hit back at British Airways after it pulled its Louis Theroux podcast sponsorship.

This is a developing news story.

Each Other Films Unveils Slate With Folklore Epic, Drag Documentary

by jummy84 November 3, 2025

Seven years after its launch, Taiwan-based Each Other Films is stepping into an expanded phase of international production, with co-founder and head producer Jacqueline W. Liu and co-founder and CEO Tiffany Yu-Chia Chen unveiling a diverse lineup that stretches from documentary to big-budget action.

The quartet of projects represents a widening scope for the Taipei company, which has steadily built credentials through festival selections, streaming deals and local box office success since 2017.

Among the newly revealed titles is a documentary about drag performer Pangina Heals, a figure who bridges Taiwanese and Thai cultures. The film, titled “Heals,” represents the company’s initial move into factual storytelling through international partnership, working alongside Thailand’s N8 and World of Wonder.

Fiction projects include Henry Tsai’s first directorial effort, “Spent Bullets,” adapted from short stories by Taiwan writer Terao Tetsuya. Production will span multiple cities including Silicon Valley, Las Vegas and Taipei. The film has secured spots at both Golden Horse Film Project Promotion and Taiwan Creative Content Fest 2025.

The company is also returning to a proven property with a fresh chapter in its hit “The Accidental Influencer” franchise. Centered on the character Red, “The Accidental Influencer: Love Me If You Dare” will launch next January on both GTV and Netflix, bringing back the series with additional cast members and storylines focused on contemporary relationships.

Perhaps the most ambitious entry is “The Odd Three: Madam Tiger,” which director Joseph Chen-Chieh Hsu (whose credits include “Little Big Women” and Tokyo-bowing “Double Happiness”) is developing as a large-scale adventure that reinterprets traditional folklore through a modern lens. The project is being positioned as a potential launching point for additional character-driven stories across the region.

“I’ve always believed that a story rooted in a specific place, language, or authentic human connections can still move people everywhere,” said Liu. “That’s the power of cinema — it turns the personal into the universal. As we enter this next phase, I’m excited to expand what that means, especially across genre, scale, and collaboration.”

“Building a production company means knowing where you want to go, and choosing the right stories and people to take you there,” added Chen. “We’ve spent the past seven years building trust — with creators, with partners, and with each other. Now, we’re ready to scale. The future of Asian storytelling is global, and we’re here to be part of that shift.”

The company’s previous work includes the 2020 theatrical release “Little Big Women,” which topped the Taiwan box office that year and earned recognition at the Golden Horse Awards before landing on Netflix. More recently, “The Accidental Influencer” became an HBO Asia original in 2024, while “Dreams in Nightmares” played Berlin’s Panorama section this year. “Penguin Girl” opened last year’s Kaohsiung Film Festival.

Operating under a mission statement emphasizing female perspectives and universal connection, Each Other Films continues developing its pipeline while pursuing additional partnerships across borders.
