Directors Mira Nair and Bijoy Shetty on Changing How the World Sees India

by jummy84 November 15, 2025
written by jummy84

When Nair and Shetty meet over Zoom for a conversation with Vogue, they exchange notes about each other’s work and discuss the tug-of-war between authenticity and representation. Most of all, they talk about resisting the pressure to flatten identities into marketable tropes. For both filmmakers, the challenge and the joy are the same: to show India as it is—in all its messy, irresistible complexity.

Vogue: Mira, you’ve often said that you’re an Indian filmmaker at home in the world. Your films have helped change how the world sees India and its diaspora. Bijoy, your music videos, particularly your recent work with Hanumankind, are strongly rooted in Indian culture. How important is the idea of representation in your work?

Mira Nair: I am not into being an ambassador and saying my country is so wonderful, so rich. I don’t approach filmmaking like a Benetton ad. The point is to plunge into the layers of life in front of you and extricate the humanity that is local to that place, and to do it in a way that is so truthful that it becomes universal. The point is that we’re not islands among ourselves; we are actually all utterly human. That said, as an Indian filmmaker living in New York, then in East Africa, I was always in these places where I was a novelty, where I may have been forced to explain myself. But I grew up with a kind of fierceness—I’m not going to justify myself or give you lessons on my bindi. I refuse to let people who haven’t lived in our streets take our culture and bugger it up.

Bijoy Shetty: Sadly, colonization is in our DNA, where we assume that Western culture is the superior one. But in all honesty, I’ve benefited from that perception. With “Big Dawgs,” a lot of the reaction was because they never thought that an Indian could rap like this. It’s not like this tremendous video with high production value. It’s just the shock of it being an Indian rapper and an Indian music video that has taken it wherever it’s gone. But once that novelty wears off, does your work have a strong enough identity to keep the viewer’s attention? That’s what really matters.

Mira, you’ve spoken about how your primary influence is the street, whether it’s where your stories come from or your tendency to cast non-actors in your films. Bijoy, hip-hop was born on the streets of the Bronx. Can you talk about what the street means to you as a character, and how you look to it for inspiration?

Fans around the world have been concerned about the health of legendary Indian actor Dharmendra, who has now reportedly been discharged from Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital. Several Bollywood stars, including Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Govinda, and Abhay Deol, were spotted visiting him to check on the veteran actor’s condition.

Known for unforgettable performances in classics like Sholay, Chupke Chupke, Haqeeqat, Seeta Aur Geeta, and The Burning Train, Dharmendra’s filmography is filled with iconic roles. However, few know that he was also considered for a major role in Shaan (1980), the star-studded action thriller directed by Sholay director Ramesh Sippy.

Released five years after Sholay and written by Salim-Javed, Shaan featured Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor, Sunil Dutt, and Shatrughan Sinha, but Dharmendra was almost part of this ensemble. Here’s the interesting story behind which role he was offered and why he couldn’t be in the film.

Why Did Dharmendra Turn Down Shaan?

Although filmmaker Ramesh Sippy initially planned to reunite with the Sholay cast for his next big project, Shaan, fate had other plans. As per a report by News18, Ramesh Sippy wanted to cast Dharmendra, Hema Malini, and Sanjeev Kumar in key roles. However, Dharmendra decided not to be part of the film due to some differences with the director. Following his exit, Hema Malini also chose to step away, and eventually, Sanjeev Kumar too opted out, leading the filmmaker to rework the cast.

Which Actor Replaced Dharmendra in Shaan?

After Dharmendra’s exit from Shaan, there were big shoes to fill. The role eventually went to Shashi Kapoor, who had recently shared the screen with Amitabh Bachchan in Yash Chopra’s 1979 action-drama Kaala Patthar. His effortless charm and strong on-screen chemistry with Amitabh Bachchan made him a fitting addition to Ramesh Sippy’s ensemble.

What Is Shaan All About?

Directed by Ramesh Sippy, this action drama follows brothers Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan) and Ravi (Shashi Kapoor), carefree conmen whose lives take a dark turn after their honest brother, Inspector Shiv Kumar (Sunil Dutt), is killed by the ruthless crime lord Shakaal (Kulbhushan Kharbanda). Teaming up with a skilled marksman (Shatrughan Sinha), they set out to infiltrate Shakaal’s island fortress to avenge their brother’s death.

Where to Watch Shaan?

Shana is currently available to stream on Amazon Prime Video and MX Player digital platforms in India.

Why Seth Rogen Turned Down Favorite Directors for The Studio Cameos

by jummy84 November 10, 2025
written by jummy84

Seth Rogen has been having to make some tough decisions.

The star and co-creator of the Emmy-winning series The Studio recently told GQ that he had to “turn down” some of his favorite directors who have asked for cameos in the show’s second season.

“It does feel like I’m running a fake movie studio at times,” Rogen admitted. “I’m having directors’ agents call me to pitch their clients to be the directors of fake movies on our show, which is very weird and very meta. And I’m having to actually turn down directors I’m a big fan of because the movie, the fake movie, maybe isn’t quite right for the fake package we have in our heads. So yeah, it’s gotten very strange.”

The Studio‘s debut season, which ended up being a critically acclaimed success, featured quite a few famous guest stars. The series centered on a fictional Hollywood movie studio, Continental Studios, working to survive in a world where it is increasingly difficult for art and business to live together. Rogen stars as Matt Remick, a movie executive who gets promoted to president of the studio.

Though season one was packed with some iconic cameos, the Platonic actor still had plenty of people decline to make an appearance. However, some have since regretted that decision.

“I had a few people come up to me at the Emmys saying they regret it, which was very meaningful to me,” he said. “That’s all I want — for people to regret not working with me.”

In addition to all the cameos, Rogen has previously admitted that some of the characters and episodes in The Studio have been inspired by real Hollywood people or situations.

“Yes, I’ve been yelled at three times in the last week,” the Good Fortune star told Stephen Colbert earlier this year when asked about how people reacted when they eventually realized it was based on them. “Some of them are pleased, some of them are not pleased, I will say.”

Seth Rogen is having to turn down his favourite directors for ‘The Studio’ cameos: “It’s gotten very strange”

Seth Rogen has revealed he’s now having to turn down his favourite directors for cameos on The Studio.

The Hollywood satire stars Rogen as TV executive Matt Remick, who is promoted to the head of the fictional Continental Studios amid major changes in the film industry. The first season of the show, which is co-created by Rogen alongside Evan Goldberg, Alex Gregory and Peter Huyck, recently wrapped on Apple TV+.

The show is notable for its extensive use of A-list guest stars, many of whom play self-deprecating versions of themselves, with names so far having included Charlize Theron, Zoe Kravitz, Martin Scorsese, Zac Efron, Olivia Wilde, Bryan Cranston, Anthony Mackie, Ice Cube and Steve Buscemi.

Scorsese’s cameo in particular, Rogen says, has spurred other A-list directors to request an appearance on the show, with the actor describing the experience of turning down some of these names as “very meta”.

“It does feel like I’m running a fake movie studio at times,” he said in a recent interview with GQ.

He went on to add that the success of the show has led to a few people apologising for saying no to cameos. “I had a few people come up to me at the Emmys saying they regret it, which was very meaningful to me,” he explained. “That’s all I want – for people to regret not working with me.”

The interview comes after Rogen detailed his ideal hitlist for guest stars for season two, which includes Zendaya, James Cameron and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Speaking to Variety earlier this year, Rogen also hinted that Daniel Day-Lewis, who he described as “the greatest living actor”, would be an ideal candidate. “Daniel, please consider a Zoom with us,” he quipped. “We’ll pitch you a good idea.”

Dewayne Perkins, who plays publicist Tyler, has also tipped Zendaya for a role. “She’s everything,” he said. “She represents Hollywood in such a cool way, from being a child star to reaching the level that she’s reached. She’s a really good symbol of what Hollywood can be in a good way.”

In a glowing five-star review of season one, NME wrote: “This tongue-in-cheek takedown of the showbiz world is the funniest thing to come out of 2025 so far. If it doesn’t win an Emmy, there’s no justice left in Hollywood. Either that, or it’s a sign that the show has cut a bit too close to the bone – which feels like what The Studio is trying to do anyway.”

Rogen has also spoken recently about how the show was highly influenced by The Office.

‘Little Amélie or the Character of Rain’ Directors Interview

by jummy84 November 8, 2025
written by jummy84

There are too many animated movies to name that star children, but few capture how a child sees the world as well as “Little Amélie or the Character of Rain.” Based on a semi-autobiographical novel by author Amélie Nothomb, the film begins with the birth of the main character, a young Belgian girl whose father works as a diplomat in ’60s Japan, while the nation still had several scars from World War II. Precocious and believing herself to be a god, the young Amélie nonetheless has a child’s understanding of the world in which she lives, grappling with her identity as someone attached to the culture of her adopted home while also confronting death and real complex human feelings for the first time.

“Little Amélie” is the feature directorial debut of Maïlys Vallade and Liane-Cho Han, French filmmakers who first met as students studying animation at Gobelins Paris. The two went on to work on several animated films together, most notably 2015’s “The Little Prince” and “Long Way North.” During production on 2018 of “Calamity,” a film by “Long Way North” director Rémi Chayé, Han gave Vallade a copy of the original novel by Nothomb, which he had first read when he was 19. Both directors were attracted to the book’s philosophical look at early childhood, with Vallade describing the novel as short but an “explosion of the senses.”

“I remember the first time I read that book at the end, I think it was the first time I cried while reading a book,” Han said in an interview with IndieWire. “So it had a very, very strong impact on me.”

To adapt the book, Mallade and Han took inspiration from the movies they made under Chayé, which have a simple and impressionistic hand-drawn aesthetic. The resulting work, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May, is a gorgeous 2D animated creation, vibrantly combines colors to create Amélie’s world. For the animation, Mallade took some inspiration from “Japonisme,” a nineteenth-century French artistic movement that saw post-impressionist visual artists in the country take significant inspiration from Japanese artistic tradition.

“It’s one of the biggest references for everything that has to do with color in the movie, and also the simplification [of the art],” Mallade said.

Japanese animation also served as a visual reference during the movie’s production; Han said most of the team grew up during a time when the medium was popular in France, and described the film as a fusion between American, Disney-esque influences and those of Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki. Mallade, for her own part, describes live action filmmaking as her biggest inspiration, as it influenced the film’s cinematic framing and how she situated the “camera” to represent Amélie’s perspective.

During production, one of the biggest concerns for the team was representing Japan, and the book’s unique cultural mix between the country and Belgium. As Mallade put it, the Japan of the story is an idealized version of the real country, one seen through the precocious main character’s eyes, but they still wanted to pay attention to what Japan would have been like during the ’60s. Artistic director Eddine Noël did much of the research into the time period and the environment of the Kansai region in which the film is set, and built a replica of the house featured in the novel, and the team designed the house with Western furniture to represent the cultural fusion. Some areas, like a beach that plays a major role in the climax, are based on real places and drew from the plants and fish that are there in real life.

Although “Little Amélie” is a very grounded story of a girl’s coming-of-age, it contains several scenes in which the animators bent reality to represent Amélie’s point of view. Early in the film, she responds to the taste of a white Belgian chocolate bar as an almost nirvana-like awakening; when she experiences her first Spring, the flowers grow and expand into a limitless field. During the beach scene where she nearly drowns, the ocean parts for her in a symbolic moment. Han, who said the beach moment came from how he pictured the scene from the book as a kid, said these moments were intended to represent Amélie’s evolution, from a nearly mute baby in the beginning to a more mature girl by the end.

“We always tried to find some ideas that meet her emotional state,” Han told IndieWire. “You really feel that something happened to her brain, by connecting her neurons together, so she’s a bit more conscious about herself.”

Mallade described the process of putting the audience in the brain of Amélie as the most challenging part of making the entire film, as it was key to making the very simple story feel universal and emotionally resonant. Narration from Amélie, in which she conveyed her innocent worldview, helped to situate the audience in her perspective. As part of the process, Mallade and Han asked their team for memories they had from their childhood to pepper throughout the film. For example, a key scene where Amélie’s nanny Nishio creates and spins two tops, as a metaphor for their powerful soulmate connection, came from a memory a color artist offered. Mallade said these moments helped make the film both more specific and more universal, something that’s heavily rooted in its time and place while resonating with all audiences.

“We really want audiences to remember how things where when they were young, and that love can exist without barriers,” Mallade said. “Just remember the world when you were a kid, and you really cling to one’s memories.”

“Little Amélie or the Character of Rain” is now playing in theaters nationwide.

Jennifer Lawrence Says Male Directors Can Over-Direct Actors

Jennifer Lawrence Says Male Directors Can Over-Direct Actors

by jummy84 November 7, 2025
written by jummy84

Jennifer Lawrence recently told Vulture during a post-screening Q&A for “Die My Love” that she feels a noticeable difference when she’s working with a female director compared to a male director. “Die My Love” was helmed by Lynne Ramsay. Other female filmmakers in Lawrence’s filmography include Debra Granik (“Winter’s Bone”), Jodie Foster (“The Beaver”), Susanne Bier (“Serena”) and Lila Neugebauer (“Causeway”).

“I have found a commonality in female directors, which is that they do not do this thing, which is over-direct,” the Oscar winner noted. “There have been some times when I’ve worked with male directors where there’s this need to constantly feel like they’re directing the movie. And it’s not even really getting anything done. It’s just annoying. When I think auteur, my mind kind of goes to controlling and … what’s that word? Neurotic!”

“And Lynne was the opposite,” Lawrence continued. “She really built this world and made sure that we were all on the same page, through music and conversations and the atmosphere and the set. And then she would just kind of slowly walk back. And sometimes, from the discomfort of that, from the lack of her visibility, something interesting would come from it. And then she would come out and be like, ‘That’s great, great, yeah, do it again.’ Or we would accidentally laugh and be like, ‘Oh, sorry.’ And she’d be like, ‘No, it was great. I liked that you laughed. Do it again.’”

“Die My Love,” based on Ariana Harwicz’s 2012 novel of the same name, stars Lawrence as a woman plunged into psychosis amid a loveless marriage following the birth of her child. Robert Pattinson, LaKeith Stanfield, Nick Nolte and Sissy Spacek co-star.

Ramsay told Vulture that her directing style on the movie was born of wanting the actors to feel free on the set.

“I love working with actors. When you really trust each other, something just happens that’s magical,” Ramsay said. “So sometimes I’d let the take run long. There’s a kind of discomfort in that. It’s like, ‘What the hell did we do now?; But then something happens sometimes. I gave them the space in that house to just explore and go in and out of doors. There was one scene where Grace is just bored in the house and there’s that laundry basket, and I didn’t ask her to tip it over with her toe, but there’s a kind of rage in that.”

“Die My Love” opens in theaters Nov. 7 from Mubi.

Vicky Kaushal’s Favorite Directors: Guess Who’s Not On The List? | Glamsham.com

by jummy84 October 16, 2025
written by jummy84

Actor Vicky Kaushal has spoken about the ongoing buzz around his strained relationship with director Anurag Kashyap, days after the director spoke candidly about their current lack of interaction.

In a conversation at the Yuvaa Conclave, the Masaan actor, all set to become a father soon, spoke about the directors with whom he is close. Vicky openly tagged directors such as Anand Tiwari, Meghna Gulzar, and Laxman Utekar, highlighting the importance of long-term creative partnerships based on respect and trust to him. Interestingly, there was no mention of Anurag Kashyap’s name in the list — something that did not escape the fans, particularly in the wake of Kashyap’s recent comments.

This comes after the director’s open interview with The Lallantop, where he spoke about Vicky Kaushal’s new movie Chhaava, which was released on February 14, 2025. Anurag shared that he screened the movie just to watch actor Viineet Kumar Singh perform and confessed that he didn’t particularly care for it.

More importantly, he also opened up about his equation at a personal level with Kaushal. “I have very little interaction with him now. I don’t judge him, because everyone has their own reasons… I don’t repeat myself. What I wanted to say, I said,” said Kashyap, clearly stating there has been distance between them.

For those who do not know their background, Vicky Kaushal’s first major role was in Kashyap’s 2015 film Masaan, and that remains a milestone in his career. Kashyap, an acclaimed director with a reputation for providing new talent with their initial major opportunity, had frequently boasted about Kaushal’s ascension in Bollywood. Nevertheless, with time, their professional journeys went different ways.

Vicky’s recent remarks indicate a subtle but strong effort to clear the air without taking things out of hand. By not mentioning Kashyap as one of his closest collaborators, the actor of Uri appeared to indirectly confirm increasing distance between them while accentuating the individuals who are still a part of his creative process.

Meanwhile, Kashyap’s comments also suggested no ill will merely a natural drift in all these years as both established their own careers.

Although no reason for the estrangement has been openly expressed by either side, this public acknowledgement on both their parts has placed their once-strong relationship in sharp relief, and the fans wonder now if ever the two will again work together in the future.

Taylor Lynn Corporation acquired by Springbank directors, marking a new chapter for both industry leaders

by jummy84 October 8, 2025
written by jummy84

In a landmark move for the UK events industry, Liz Taylor, founder and CEO of leading event management firm Taylor Lynn Corporation (TLC), has announced her decision to step down following the acquisition of the company by Anna-Liisa Evans and Paul Gilmore, directors of the acclaimed floral design and event décor company Springbank.

This strategic acquisition brings together two of the industry’s most creative forces under the TLC brand while maintaining the distinct identity and independence of both companies.

Founded in 1995, TLC has become synonymous with exceptional event experiences. Liz Taylor, who became sole owner in 2008, has enjoyed a long-standing creative partnership with Anna-Liisa Evans, making this transition a natural evolution for both businesses.

As part of the acquisition, Paul Gilmore will take on the role of CEO of TLC, guiding the company through its next chapter. TLC operations will move to Springbank’s headquarters in Cheshire, although both brands will continue to operate as separate entities.

“This is a seamless transition,” said Gilmore. “Together, we’re combining decades of experience and creativity to offer an unmatched platform for event innovation and delivery.”

The acquisition also represents a full-circle moment: Dianne Lynn, Liz Taylor’s former TLC business partner, previously owned Springbank until it was sold to Anna-Liisa Evans in 2004. The two businesses have a rich history of collaboration, and this move renews that legacy.

“Liz has built a global reputation for excellence in events,” added Evans. “We’re honoured to build on that legacy and lead TLC into an exciting new future.”

Liz Taylor expressed her full confidence in the new leadership: “The synergy between Anna-Liisa and me has always been creatively electric. With Paul at the helm, TLC is in excellent hands for its next chapter. I’ll now focus on my consultancy business while remaining available to support when required.”

This exciting acquisition marks the beginning of a new era, blending TLC’s iconic presence in the event sector with Springbank’s signature creative flair — setting new standards in event design, innovation, and execution.
