Veteran Actor Dharmendra Passes Away at 89
Bollywood

Dilip Kumar loved Dharmendra like he was a real, younger brother – Exclusive

by jummy84 November 25, 2025
written by jummy84

Some bonds are indelible and last beyond time. Such was the attachment between Dharmendra, Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu. After Dilip Kumar’s passing in 2021, Dharmendra kept in touch with Saira Banu, making sure she was always in good health and spirit. Today after his passing, she feels shattered and wishes she could meet him one more time.

Controlling her emotions, she speaks candidly to Filmfare about the brotherly love between Dharmendra and her late husband Dilip Kumar. In her own words…

“Dharam ji was like Dilip Kumar’s younger brother”

Dharam ji was and will be family to us, always. It’s an association of 50+ years. Yusuf saab (Dilip Kumar) always thought of him as his younger brother and Dharam ji respected and loved him as we loved and respected him.

Dharam ji was family to us for over 50 years, whether it be my grandmother, mother, my brother, later on Yusuf saab, All our family members were crazy about him. And he was never a guest in our house. He was family could walk into the house at 1 am and 2 am to discuss whatever he wanted to discuss with Yusuf saab and spend time with him.

“We loved Dharam ji a lot and he loved us back equally”

When he was launching Sunny, he just walked up to the second-floor bedroom in our Bandra home, sat with Yusuf saab, had large photographs and the publicity material that was to launch Sunny and Amrita Singh. The evenings and the days that we shared were so memorable. We loved Dharam ji, we loved him a lot.

Dharam ji loved us, too. Yusuf saab and he loved to eat together. They used to savour lovely home-cooked biryani, which our special cook used to prepare over the years. And Dharam ji would ask, whenever he wanted, the biryani to be sent to his place. It would be made from here and sent to him.

“I feel shattered knowing Dharam ji is no more”

I spoke to him about a month ago that Dharam ji, I haven’t seen you for a very long time. Both Sunny and Dharam ji would check up on me regularly in the past three or four years. When we last spoke, I said, “We haven’t seen you for long. May I come to meet you? You always say, come and meet me, see you at the farm house in Lonavala.” Dharam ji said, “No, Saira ji, don’t worry at all. I am very well and I will come and meet you.”

Today has been shattering for us. It has been shattering for me. I can’t tell you what I feel. I have been watching this video where Yusuf saab is praising him. Yusuf used to love him like a younger brother.

Saira Banu

And Dharam ji would say, ‘I feel that we are both brothers. We are both brothers and were born from different mothers. But we are real brothers.’

Dharmendra Barged In Dilip Kumar’s Home & Yousuf Saab Scaringly Called His Servant

Dharmendra & Dilip Kumar’s First Meeting Was Funny Yet Scary! ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Dharmendra is one of the few superstars who impressed audiences with his looks and acting skills ever since he stepped on the silver screen. When he first arrived in Bombay, the only superstar he admired was Dilip Kumar. An admiration that turned into a friendship that was eternal. Dharam ji was mesmerized by Yousuf Saab so much so that Saira Banu used to joke that he fought with her for Dilip Kumar’s love and attention!

The two never worked together in any film. However, Dilip Kumar and he formed a bond that was unbreakable. In fact, when Sunny Deol was being launched in Betaab, Dilip Kumar was the first one to see his photoshoots and offer feedback!

Dharmendra & Dilip Kumar’s First Awkward Meeting

Dharmendra & Dilip Kumar’s first meeting was very awkward. In Dilip Kumar’s autobiography, the Sholay superstar recalled, “I wasn’t stopped at the gate by anybody, and so I walked right into the house through the main door. There was a wooden staircase leading to a bedroom upstairs. Again, nobody stopped me, so I climbed up the stairs and stood at the entrance to one of the rooms.”

Dilip Kumar Called His Staff!

Dilip Kumar was startled looking at a stranger in his room, and he was terrified enough to call for his staff! In the same anecdote, the Sholay actor recalled, “He called out to a servant loudly. Now scared, I ran down the staircase and bolted out of the house, looking behind to see if I was being followed.”

The Second Meeting – Two Brothers United!

Years later, Dharmendra found his footing in the industry as a superstar, and he once met Dilip Kumar’s sister at an event and told her that he felt Dilip Sahab was his elder brother as well. She set up their meeting, and it turned into an eternal friendship!

AR Rahman On Why He Never Liked His Hindu Name Dilip Kumar; Says, “It Didn’t Match The Image I Had Of…”

by jummy84 October 16, 2025
written by jummy84

Music legend AR Rahman is known worldwide for his soulful compositions and calm personality. While many fans are aware of his spiritual side, not everyone knows the unique story behind his name and how a Hindu astrologer helped him choose it.

AR Rahman Shares Story Behind His Name

Born as Dilip Kumar, Rahman experienced a major life shift after his father passed away. His family later embraced Islam, and Rahman began to feel that his original name didn’t truly represent who he was. “N“The truth is, I never liked my name. No disrespect to the great actor Dilip Kumar! However, somehow my name didn’t match the image I had of myself,” he said in an old interview with Dawn.

The name change happened during a visit to an astrologer, whom his mother had consulted for his sister’s marriage. Around that time, Rahman had also been thinking about changing his name. The astrologer noticed something special in him and suggested two names, Abdul Rahman and Abdul Rahim. “I instantly liked the name Rahman,” he said. His mother then added “Allahrakha,” meaning “Protected by God,” and the name AR Rahman was born.

Recently, the maestro opened up about another turning point in his journey, the time he decided to learn Hindi. Speaking to NDTV Good Times, Rahman said he once felt “humiliated” reading poor Hindi translations of his Tamil songs, which motivated him to master the language himself.

Now gearing up for his first-ever performance in Varanasi, Rahman said he’s excited to connect with the city’s history and energy. “I missed the opportunity before… I think it was meant to be that way. The call has come now,” he said. “It’s the energy and the million stories of Varanasi that I’m most looking forward to.”

Rahman’s journey, both spiritual and musical, continues to inspire fans across the world.

Filmfare Flashback: Looking Back at Dilip Kumar and Nutan’s Wins for Devdas and Seema

by jummy84 September 13, 2025
written by jummy84

As we gear up for the grand 70th edition of the Filmfare Awards in Gujarat, this is the perfect moment to look back at the glorious past of Indian cinema’s most celebrated event. Today, we turn the pages back to the 4th Filmfare Awards held in May 1957.

Two legends of Hindi cinema made history as Dilip Kumar won the Best Actor award for his unforgettable performance in Devdas, and Nutan clinched her very first Best Actress trophy for Seema (1955). This went on to become the late actress’ first of five Best Actress awards. Later, they posed together with their trophies, making it a memorable frame.

Take a look at the picture:

V Shantaram won the Best Director Award for Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje, and this film also won the Best Film award. In fact, the film swept the awards that year. AK Parmar won the award for Best Sound Design, and Kanu Desai bagged the Best Art Direction award for Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje.

Other awardees were Motilal (Best Supporting Actor; Devdas), Vyjayanthimala (Best Supporting Actress; Devdas), GG Mayekar (Best Music Director; Shree 420) and Amiya Chakravarty (Best Story; Seema), among others.

From icons like Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor, and Nargis in the early years, to Amitabh Bachchan, Rekha, and Rishi Kapoor, every era of Hindi cinema has left its imprint on the Filmfare stage. In more recent years, Shah Rukh Khan’s wit as a host, Salman Khan’s electrifying performances, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s elegance, Deepika Padukone’s grace, Priyanka Chopra’s energy, and Ranveer Singh’s larger-than-life stage presence have turned the awards into a spectacle of glamour and entertainment. The 70th Filmfare Awards will take place in Gujarat in October this year.

Stay tuned to Filmfare for more updates on the awards.

Amitabh Bachchan and Alia Bhatt dance with Sreeleela, Farah Khan and Dilip give commentary in Om Shanti Om-style ad | Bollywood

Bollywood stars Amitabh Bachchan, Alia Bhatt, Mahesh Bhatt and Farah Khan, among others, came together for a star-studded advertisement for e-commerce platform Flipkart. The new campaign has given fans Om Shanti Om vibes, and for all the right reasons.

Alia Bhatt, Amitabh Bachchan, Farah Khan and Sreeleela come together for an advertisement.

Amitabh Bachchan, Alia Bhatt and Farah Khan unite for an advertisement

On Saturday, the platform shared the video of its Big Billion Days (BBD) 2025 campaign, and it is nothing short of a spectacle. Flipkart has onboarded 11 celebrities for the ad, making it one of the most star-studded advertisements in recent memory.

The ad begins with child actor and influencer Arista Mehta sitting in her office and unveiling the products she bought in the Big Billion Days sale. She then attends a glittering event with her friends, where she enjoys VVIP access. Hiding from paparazzi cameras, she steps into a lift where Alia Bhatt, dressed in a black outfit, is already present. Alia notices that Arista’s phone cover matches her own. Moments later, Amitabh Bachchan enters the lift — also carrying the same phone cover. Spotting the coincidence, Arista quips, “AB, AB – 2AB,” leaving both Alia and Big B in splits.

The trio then heads into a lavish party hall, where “actor ka baap” (father of an actor), filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, welcomes them warmly. Inside, Jannat Zubair and Sakshi Shivdasani are seen speculating whether Arista is a star kid. Later, comedian Bassi is shown serving food, while Arista stumbles upon Yashraj Mukhate DJing as actress Sreeleela dances to his beats. Arista joins in with a few dance steps, prompting everyone — including Amitabh and Alia — to follow along. At this point, Farah Khan quips, “Is this a party or a dance competition?” To which Dilip replies, “Whatever it is, you can come to Mumbai.” The ad ends with Alia taking Arista away in her luxury car.

Fans were thrilled to see so many stars together. Comments poured in: “Pure madness. Too good, guys,” wrote one. Another said, “Such a good concept.” One comment read, “This ad stole my heart. AB plus AB (fire emoji).” Another noted, “Love when brands forget about budgets.” A fan even asked, “Iss ad ka budget kya hoga? (What must the budget of this ad be?)” while one called it, “Flipkart ad (cross sign) Om Shanti Om part 2.”

The ad reminded fans of the iconic Deewangi Deewangi song from Farah Khan’s Om Shanti Om (2007), which featured Bollywood stalwarts including Dharmendra, Salman Khan, Juhi Chawla, Rani Mukerji, Kajol, and others dancing alongside Shah Rukh Khan.

Amitabh Bachchan, Alia Bhatt and Sreeleela’s upcoming films

Amitabh is currently busy shooting for his game show Kaun Banega Crorepati season 17. He is expected to begin the shoot for Nag Ashwin’s Kalki 2898 AD sequel in December, which also stars Prabhas, Deepika Padukone and Kamal Haasan in lead roles.

Alia, on the other hand, is awaiting the release of her YRF spy universe film, Alpha which also stars Sharvari and Bobby Deol in lead roles and is scheduled to release in theatres on December 25. Sreeleela is all set to make her Bollywood debut alongside Kartik Aaryan in Anurag Basu’s yet-untitled romantic musical drama.

Raj Kapoor Was In Coma & Dilip Kumar Kept Crying, “Maaf Kar De Mujhe” Yearning For A Last Wish

It was on the unfateful day of June 2, 1988, when the Showman of Indian Cinema, Raj Kapoor, breathed his last. The superstar passed away after struggling for his life. But in the last few days, his health deteriorated, and he slipped into Coma. While his family was by his side in these last days, his best friend Dilip Kumar was also informed about his condition.

Dilip Kumar, who was in Pakistan for an event, rushed back to Delhi to be by his best friend’s side. The superstar, however, did not know that this was the last time he was meeting his ‘Laale Di Jaan’, a title he gave him endearingly.

Dilip Kumar could not believe that Raj Kapoor had slipped into Coma, and he tried every bit to revive him. To bring him back to consciousness, the Naya Daur actor reminded the Sangam superstar of all that their childhood held in Pakistan.

Taking him down memory lane, Dilip Kumar held Raj Kapoor‘s hand and talked about their ancestral home in Peshawar, the kebabs, and how he had brought kebab ki khushboo with him from Pakistan just for his friend.

Dilip Kumar’s Heartfelt Goodbye To Raj Kapoor: A Friend’s Last Wish Left Unfulfilled

In Dilip Kumar’s autobiography, Rishi Kapoor himself wrote a note about his father’s last meeting with the Devdas actor. Both of them are helpless, one lying on the bed and the other trying to make him live just to fulfill that one wish together!

Rishi Kapoor, in his note, wrote, “I remember very clearly how he (Dilip Kumar) walked into the room where Papa was lying unconscious and drew a chair close to the bed on which he sat holding Papa’s hand. He began telling Papa, ‘Raj, aaj bhi main der se aaya. Maaf kar de mujhe..‘ I know you like to be in the limelight and have all the attention on you. Enough is enough. Get up, sit, and listen to me. I have just come back from Peshawar, and I have brought the aroma of chapli kebabs to temp you. You and I will go together and will walk through the bazaar, like we used to and enjoy the kebabs and rotis. Raj, wake up and stop acting, I know you are a great actor.”

Concluding the note Rishi Kapoor wrote a hearbreaking good bye from a friend to another friend, “…(Dilip Kumar said) Raj, mainu le jana hai tusi Peshawar de ghar de aangan wich.’ His voice was now choking and tears were brimming over from his eyes as he spoke.“

With that breaking voice, a last wish was left unfulfilled, and while Dilip Kumar looked one last time at Raj Kapoor, everyone in that hospital room knew that the Showman was not returning to them ever again.

Raj Kapoor breathed his last on June 2, 1988.
