“I Just Wanted to Get Out of There”, Gulshan Devaiah Recalls Feeling Out of Place at Shah Rukh Khan’s Mannat Party

Actor Gulshan Devaiah, known for his recent appearance in Kantara: A Legend – Chapter One, recently opened up about a star-studded evening that left him feeling unexpectedly uncomfortable. In an honest and introspective interview with one of the media houses, Gulshan recalled attending a lavish party at Shah Rukh Khan’s iconic bungalow, Mannat, where despite a warm welcome, he couldn’t shake off the feeling that he didn’t belong.

Gulshan attended the high-profile event with actress Kalki Koechlin, arriving in her car. He described the entrance to Mannat as “not what people think,” subtly hinting at how the reality of such elite gatherings differs from the glitz often portrayed. “I stayed at the party for about three hours, but I felt very uncomfortable. I kept feeling like I didn’t belong there,” Gulshan admitted. Despite being personally welcomed by Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan, who he described as very sweet, the actor said he couldn’t shake off the feeling of being out of place.

“That feeling was the biggest realization for me, that I shouldn’t feel like I don’t belong here. But I did.” The night wasn’t without its highlights. Gulshan recalled a long and engaging conversation with Australian actor Joel Edgerton, known for his work in The Great Gatsby and Loving. Still, the admiration for others present at the party only deepened his discomfort.

“I kept looking at Joel and thinking, ‘Where have I seen you before?’ They’re all very successful,” he said, reflecting on the aura of celebrity around him. Despite the kindness and respect shown to him, the internal struggle persisted. For Gulshan, this was more than just an awkward evening, it was a reflection of the deeper challenges of feeling accepted within the film industry. Gulshan shared that with time and experience, he no longer feels that level of discomfort, but the experience at Mannat stayed with him as a defining moment. “If I want to feel at home in this industry, I need to feel comfortable in such situations. But for those three hours, I just wanted to get out of there.”

Speaking to Bollywood Bubble, he said, “When I was at an age where I needed inspiration, Manoj Bajpayee was there. He had an era of his own with films like Satya that left a deep impact on us. While Shah Rukh Khan was also doing something different within commercial films, Manoj ji was taking on realistic and unconventional roles. That really inspired me. At a time when I was feeling low, Manoj sir felt like a shining beacon of hope. His long career and continued passion for acting even today are something I admire a lot.”

Gulshan also praised Irrfan Khan for his unique style and fearless choices. He said, “Irrfan was truly versatile. He brought variety into his roles without changing who he was to please others. He had confidence in his talent and didn’t try to fit in. Sometimes, you can just feel that strong self-belief in people. I also enjoy doing different kinds of roles, and working with different people helps me grow as an actor. You realise that, ‘Oh, I can do this too!’”

Actor Gulshan Devaiah recently shared a story about visiting Shah Rukh Khan’s house, Mannat, after an award show. Clearing up a common misunderstanding, Gulshan said he did not gatecrash the party; he was actually invited by Shah Rukh himself.

He attended the party with filmmaker Anurag Kashyap and his then-wife, actress Kalki Koechlin. In an interview with Bollywood Bubble, Gulshan recalled, “We went in Kalki’s car. The entrance to Mannat is not what people think it is. I stayed at the party for about three hours, but I felt very uncomfortable. I kept feeling like I didn’t belong there. That feeling was a big realisation for me that I shouldn’t feel like I don’t belong. But I did.”

He described the star-studded party where he saw big names like Karan Johar, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, and Farhan Akhtar. “Everyone there was a big personality. Shah Rukh spoke to me very nicely, and even Gauri Khan was very sweet. I also had a long conversation with Australian actor Joel Edgerton. I kept looking at him, wondering, ‘Where have I seen you before?’”

Gulshan admitted that, despite the warm welcome, he couldn’t shake off the feeling that he didn’t fit in. “Those people are all high achievers. If I want to feel like I belong in this industry, I should feel comfortable in such situations. But for those three hours, I just wanted to leave. I don’t feel that way anymore, but back then, I did.”
