The Best Skin Care Routine for Mature Skin, According to Dermatologists

by jummy84 November 25, 2025
written by jummy84

Our skin is constantly evolving, which means changes to our regiments are sometimes needed—especially when it comes to finding the best skin care routine for mature skin.

While almost every skin care routine checks the same basic boxes—cleanse, treat, moisturize, repeat—mature skin care routines also typically target concerns like fine lines, loss of elasticity, and hyperpigmentation. According to Dendy Engelman, MD, a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist, as we age, our skin loses moisture faster, and our collagen and elastin production starts to decline. Introducing anti-aging ingredients like retinol, vitamin C, and peptides can go a long way, but building a consistent daily routine is just as important when caring for mature skin.

We asked dermatologists and skin care experts for their tips to craft the best skin care routine for mature skin. Ahead, you’ll find…

The best morning routine for mature skin

Think of your morning skin care routine as your skin’s best defense against your environment and busy day. “The morning routine focuses on protecting the skin from UV exposure, pollution, and oxidative stress.” Paula Brezavseck PA-C, board-certified physician associate and founder of Azala Skin Clinic, tells Glamour. Here’s what it should include:

Gentle Cleanser

“Use a mild, hydrating cleanser (cream or oil-based are good options) to remove impurities without stripping the skin’s natural moisture barrier,” says Angela Lamb, MD, director of the Westside Mount Sinai Dermatology Faculty Practice.

Serum

While not essential, a morning serum is a great opportunity to work some extra skin care actives into your routine without overwhelming your skin at night. “Vitamin C a potent antioxidant that protects the skin from UV rays and free-radical damage from stress and pollution,” says Dr. Palmer. “It also helps to build collagen and fade areas of hyperpigmentation.”

If you’re noticing more dryness in your skin throughout the day, you can also opt for a gentler serum for an extra shot of hydration. Look for a formula with peptides or hyaluronic acid—“a humectant that can hold up to 1,000x its weight in water, giving skin a plumper, smoother appearance and reducing the look of wrinkles caused by dehydration,” explains Dr. Whitney Hovenic, double board-certified dermatologist and Mohs Surgeon.

Moisturizer

“Mature skin is often drier, so apply a good quality, fragrance-free moisturizer daily to trap water and keep skin hydrated,” Dr. Lamb says. “Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, or glycerin.”

SPF

If your daily moisturizer doesn’t include sun protection, make sure to add a layer of broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher—yes, even if it’s winter or you’re planning to be inside all day. “Sun protection is essential, especially on the face, neck, and hands, as UV exposure is one of the biggest drivers of visible aging,” Brezavseck says.

The best evening routine for mature skin

While the morning skin care routine is all about prep and protection, nighttime is for recovery. Active ingredients work hard while you’re sleeping (without pesky environmental complications) to resolve common mature skin concerns. “Because the skin’s natural repair processes slow with age, nighttime consistency becomes especially important,” Brezavseck says. Here’s what you should use:

Cleanser

Since you’re washing your day off (sweat, makeup residue, dirt) you can opt for a lightly heavier-duty cleanser at night, like a foaming formula rather than a balm. But since mature skin care is all about preserving hydration, Dr. Lamb still says to avoid harsh soaps.

Retinol or retinoids

Retinol tends to be the centerpiece of the of the anti-aging skin care routine and for good reason: “Retinol stimulate cell turnover, increases collagen production and decreases the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It has also been shown to regulate oil production and decrease inflammation and hyperpigmentation,” says board-certified dermatologist Dr. Debbie Palmer.

That endorsement might make you want to start drenching your face in retinol nightly, but you’re totally new to the ingredient—and especially if you have sensitive skin—start slow. Kiran Mian, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at Hudson Dermatology & Laser Surgery, recommends starting out by with a pea-sized amount of retinol cream or serum to your whole face once a week. Look out for signs of irritation, and gradually increase use (up to every other night) according to your skin’s tolerance.

Targeted Treatment

This is where you can tailor your nighttime routine to your unique skin care concerns. It’s generally best to avoid pairing retinoids with other chemical exfoliants or harsh ingredients, but if you think your routine needs another active, there are additional options.

10 Best Shampoos for Oily Hair 2025, According to Dermatologists

by jummy84 November 11, 2025
written by jummy84

Testing notes: “This shampoo has probably one of the best textures on this list. It’s a gel that foams into a really nice lather and washes out easily for smooth, grease-free strands. I noticed that my scalp was less flaky and oily post-wash and I’d definitely recommend it for anyone looking to combat oily roots and an unbalanced scalp,” says Glamour’s Kilkeary.

Best for Fine Hair: Nécessaire Rosemary Shampoo

  • Nécessaire Rosemary Shampoo

Nécessaire Rosemary Shampoo

  • Pros: Smells great; lightweight formula; lathers nicely
  • Cons: Pricey

This luxurious rosemary shampoo might be a little pricey, but Glamour’s Kilkeary says it’s well worth it if you have fine, oily strands. Kerry E. Yates, a trichologist and founder of Colour Collective, agrees. “It has antimicrobial properties that can decrease inflammation and help increase blood circulation,” she says. This can help thicken your hair over time and make your hair look fuller and more voluminous (sans the grease). It also has ceramides that nourish and hydrate the scalp’s skin barrier.

Testing notes: “My hair gets pretty oily if I skip a wash day, so I simply can’t go without a clarifying shampoo. This super-nourishing shampoo (which smells amazing, by the way) helps absorb grease and promotes growth in sparse areas, and I’ve noticed such a difference in my hair since I first started using it. The hair at my root is much thicker and stronger, and I don’t find that my strands get as greasy as quickly. My hair feels and looks fresh and has much more body and volume,”Glamour’s Kilkeary says.

Best for Dry Ends: Kérastase Bain Divalent Balancing Shampoo

Kerastase Bain Divalent Balancing Shampoo for Oily Hair

  • Pros: Keeps hair shiny but not greasy; helps with itch
  • Cons: Expensive

Have greasy roots but dry ends? Bradley Leake, a professional hairstylist based in Los Angeles, suggests this balancing shampoo, which he describes as “an ultralight formula that balances scalp oiliness.” It contains amino acids to reduce excess oil and odors, while vitamin B6 helps gently nourish lengths. Leake also notes that it’s a great volumizing shampoo for flat hair, which is yet another reason he loves using it with clients.

Testing notes: “My hair tends to get shiny after a day, but I’ve noticed that after using this Kerastase shampoo, my strands stay shine-free for up to three days. Just keep in mind that it doesn’t lather at all, so I would recommend double- (or triple-) washing with another shampoo. I have coarse, long hair so I do end up using a lot of product, which adds up, but I can honestly say that this is the only hair product that’s actually helped my greasy strands,” says Glamour senior commerce editor Jenifer Calle.

13 Best Face Serums of 2025, According to Dermatologists

by jummy84 October 23, 2025
written by jummy84

Finding the best face serum for your skin type and concerns can be a transformative move for your complexion—so, if you have yet to use one, consider this your cue. “Serums are like espresso shots for your skin: highly concentrated and designed to deliver a potent dose of active ingredients right where they are needed most,” says Dr. Mona Gohara, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist in New Haven, CT. As a result, they can target specific issues, like fine lines or discoloration, with more precision than a moisturizer, and their lightweight texture makes them easy to layer, she says.

Dermatologists’ Favorite Face Serums

However, a face serum’s tailored approach means that it’s not a one-size-fits-all product. Rather, there’s a lot of variety, and it helps to know what your goal is before you get started. With that in mind, scroll for dermatologist and editor recommendations on the best face serums for you.

In This Story

Best Antioxidant Serum: SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic

  • Why We Love It: “Vitamin C serums are the LBD of skincare; everyone should have one,” says Dr. Gohara. Dr. Julius Few, M.D., a board-certified plastic surgeon in Chicago and Los Angeles, agrees. “As a pillar of any highly effective skin-care ritual, topical vitamin C calms and cools the skin while providing a layer of protection from free radicals and environmental pollutants,” he says. “Arguably the most important ingredient to maintain healthy skin long-term, antioxidants work to neutralize aging free radicals like pollution, smoke, and the main culprit, UV rays.” He suggests applying it daily underneath sunscreen to stimulate cell oxygenation to revitalize and firm texture. Of the best, SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic is a favorite of more than one Vogue editor thanks to its supercharged blend formulated to firm, brighten, and protect skin from oxidative stress.
  • Key Ingredients: 15% l-ascorbic acid, 1% alpha tocopherol, 0.5% ferulic acid
  • Best For: Fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation, dullness
  • Skin Types: Normal, dry, combination, sensitive
  • Size: 30 mL

Best Growth Factor Serum: SkinMedica TNS Advanced+ Serum

  • Why We Love It: As skin ages, its levels of collagen and elasticity drop while cell turnover slows down. That’s where firming serums come in, since they provide ingredients that speed up skin cell turnover, support collagen production, and deliver moisture—such as growth factors, one of the industry’s buzziest anti-aging ingredients. And SkinMedica TNS Advanced Serum contains growth factors that have been shown in studies to improve sagging skin and increase skin density. “TNS Advanced Serum is the overachiever of skincare—packed with growth factors that convince your skin to behave like it’s in its 30s again,” says Dr. Gohara, who likens it to sorcery (and credits the results with helping her avoid injectables well into her 40s).
  • Key Ingredients: Growth factors, peptides, flax seed, marine extract, green microalgae
  • Best For: Fine lines, wrinkles, sagging
  • Skin Types: Normal, dry, combination, oily
  • Size: 30 mL

Best Hyaluronic Acid Serum: iS Clinical Hydra-Cool Serum

  • Why We Love It: “Hyaluronic is a glycosaminoglycan (a very large sugar) that occurs naturally in the body,” says Dr. Few. “Roughly half the hyaluronic acid in the body is present in your skin, where it binds to water to help retain moisture. As we age, the production of hyaluronic acid slows down and our complexion becomes drier and loses firmness. The right hyaluronic acid helps to increase moisture and diminish wrinkles and age lines. It also tightens, plumps, and firms the skin.” Few of these hydrators are as acclaimed as iS Clinical’s Hydra-Cool. Why? It boasts a sinks-right-in texture and not only moisturizes, but soothes and decongests thanks to centella asiatica, mushroom, and vitamin B—making it exceptional for dry skin types.
  • Editor’s Experience: “True to its name, iS Clincial’s Hydra-Cool Serum imparts as soothingly chilly feel from the moment it touches skin’s surface. Sensorial benefits aside, its blend of hyaluronic acid and centella asiatica keeps my complexion hydrated for hours on end, and layers well with following steps in my routine.” —Kiana Murden, senior beauty shopping writer
  • Key Ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, centella asiatica, mushroom, vitamin B
  • Best For: Dryness, redness, rosacea, eczema, acne
  • Skin Types: Dry, normal, combination, oily, acne-prone, sensitive
  • Size: 30 mL

Best Retinol Serum: Iope Retinol Super Bounce Serum

Iope

Retinol Super Bounce Serum

  • Why We Love It: If you plan to use a retinol serum in your routine, it’s a good idea to start with a Korean retinol serum in particular, since these are formulated to be gentle and ideal for daily use—without an extended acclimation period. Iope’s version is beloved by derms stateside for its balance of 1% retinol—a mid-strength concentration—with soothing ingredients. “Iope Retinol Super Bounce Serum targets early signs of aging while keeping the skin hydrated and resilient,” says Dr. Noah Gratch, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist in New York and Long Island. “Its stabilized retinol stimulates collagen and cell turnover, while soothing and hydrating ingredients minimize dryness.” Making the most of retinol’s benefits are soothing cypress leaf, a skin barrier-supporting growth factor, and a patented Lacto-Exosome, which targets elasticity.
  • Key Ingredients: Retinol, cypress leaf, Lacto-Exosome, plant-derived epidermal growth factor
  • Best For: Fine lines, wrinkles, sagging, dark spots, blemish
  • Skin Types: Dry, normal, combination, oily, acne-prone
  • Size: 30 mL

Best Drugstore: Neutrogena Collagen Bank 15% Vitamin C Serum

Neutrogena

Collagen Bank 15% Vitamin C Serum

  • Why We Love It: This potent vitamin C serum offers a lot of bang for your buck, according to Dr. Gohara. “It’s formulated with a high concentration of 15% pure vitamin C and 2% PHA, which gently exfoliates—allowing the vitamin C to absorb into refreshed skin,” she says. That allows it to penetrate deeper into the skin, leaving skin brighter and more even in a shorter amount of time than vitamin C would alone.
  • Key Ingredients: 15% ascorbic acid, 2% gluconolactone, hydrolyzed collagen
  • Best For: Fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation, dullness
  • Skin Types: Normal, dry, combination, oily
  • Size: 0.5 fl. oz.

Best for Wrinkles: Medik8 Liquid Peptides

  • Why We Love It: Unlike other active ingredients, it’s hard to overdo peptides: Since they carry out so many different functions in skin, from spurring collagen production to supplying moisture, it’s ideal to have as many as possible. And this peptide serum delivers, with 10 different peptides (which serve to smooth lines and plump lax skin) housed in yet another copper peptide that delivers them deep into the skin. While they can take several weeks to work, the formula also deploys hyaluronic acid to immediately plump and soften skin, yielding a bit of instant gratification.
  • Editor’s Experience: “Peptides go a long way in my skin-care routine. Whether its providing a nourishing base for my retinol, delivering quick hydration, or preventing fine lines, I don’t go a week without one. Usually, it’s the Medik8 Liquid Peptides which delivers 10 different petides to keep skin firm, plump, and smooth.” —Kiana Murden, senior beauty shopping writer
  • Key Ingredients: Palmitoyl tripeptide-5, acetyl hexapeptide-8, tetrapeptide-21, pentapeptide-18, palmitoyl tripeptide-1, pantolactone, palmitoyl tripeptide-38, palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7, copper palmitoyl heptapeptide-14, heptapeptide-15 palmitate, hyaluronic acid
  • Best For: Fine lines, wrinkles, sagging
  • Skin Types: Dry, normal, combination, oily, sensitive
  • Size: 30 mL

Best for Dark Spots: Revision Skincare C+ Correcting Complex 30%

Revision Skincare

C+ Correcting Complex 30%

  • Why We Love It: This powerful serum has an eye-popping 30% concentration of THD ascorbate—a form of vitamin C known for being both gentler and more effective than its counterparts. That makes it “a do-it-all vitamin C that eliminates irritation and can be used by a variety of skin types,” Dr. Corey L. Hartman, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist in Birmingham, AL, previously shared with Vogue. “The lightweight formulation packs an antioxidant punch that brightens the skin and restores a more even, youthful skin surface.” That makes it an ideal addition to your winter skin-care routine if you’re dealing with seasonal dullness—or year-round for hyperpigmentation.
  • Editor Experience: “I used an entire bottle of this to offset stubborn acne scars, and the formula went above and beyond. Not only did it make quick work of my dark spots, but it also evened out my overall skin tone, leaving it brighter and less red. I also appreciate that it sank in quickly and, unlike many vitamin C-powered formulas, didn’t have any noticeable scent.” —Deanna Pai, contributor
  • Key Ingredients: 30% tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, vitamin E
  • Best For: Dark spots, redness
  • Skin Types: Dry, normal, combination, oily, acne-prone
  • Size: 30 mL

Best for Acne: The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%

The Ordinary

Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%

  • Why We Love It: While even the best acne treatments aren’t known for being gentle, the Ordinary’s Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% is effective without sacrificing comfort. “[Niacinamide] has a calming and brightening effect on the skin, helping to improve overall tone and texture while reducing breakouts and controlling excess sebum and oil production,” says New York-based dermatologist Dr. Michele Green, M.D., who adds that the healing, anti-inflammatory properties of this serum will most benefit those with oily skin or breakouts.
  • Editor’s Experience: “When my skin has been particularly congested or oily, The Ordinary’s niacinamide serum is an easy add-on to my routine. The ingredients are simple, the feel is non-sticky, and the price point is impossible to beat. Plus, one to two drops goes a very long way!” —Concetta Ciarlo, beauty shopping writer
  • Key Ingredients: 10% niacinamide, 1% zinc
  • Best For: Acne, redness, excess oil
  • Skin Types: normal, combination skin, oily skin, acne-prone
  • Size: 30 mL

Best for Sensitive Skin: Tower 28 SOS Intensive Rescue Serum

Tower 28

SOS Intensive Rescue Serum

  • Why We Love It: The high concentration of active ingredients—which is what makes a serum so potent—can be harsh for those with sensitive skin or conditions like eczema or rosacea. That’s where Tower 28 SOS Intensive Rescue Serum stands apart as an excellent serum for sensitive skin. “I love this calming serum, primarily due to its innovative use of hypochlorous acid, a powerful yet gentle antimicrobial agent naturally produced by our white blood cells,” Dr. Lauren Moy, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist in Los Angeles, CA, shared with Vogue. “This ingredient sets it apart by reducing inflammation and bacteria on the skin without causing irritation, making it suitable even for highly sensitive skin.”
  • Key Ingredients: Hypochlorous acid
  • Best For: Sensitivity, dryness
  • Skin Types: Normal, dry, combination, sensitive
  • Size: 60 mL

Best Korean: Sulwhasoo First Care Activating Serum

Sulwhasoo

First Care Activating Serum

  • Why We Love It: The popularity of this Korean serum spans generations, in part because the technology evolves over time—keeping the formula as powerful and effective as its peers. The blend of herbal ingredients (among them ginseng, a vitamin C derivative, and madecassoside, a compound found in centella asiatica), the formula sets out to support the skin barrier, boost hydration, and defend against environmental stressors.
  • Editor’s Experience: “On days when I prioritize my K-beauty favorites, this is the first serum I apply. The idea is that this sets the stage for the products that follow it. Best applied to damp skin after cleansing, this is remarkably hydrating—catering to skn’s moisture levels and plumpness sans irritation. My skin drinks it up!” —Kiana Murden, senior beauty shopping writer
  • Key Ingredients: Baikal skullcap extract, ginseng extract, madecassoside
  • Best For: Fine lines, wrinkles, sagging
  • Skin Types: Normal, dry, combination, oily, sensitive
  • Size: 60 mL

Best for Redness: La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5

La Roche-Posay

Hyalu B5 Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum

  • Why We Love It: There’s little not to love about this sought-after La Roche-Posay serum, which is among the best serums for dry and sensitive skin. The formula itself is quite gentle—hyaluronic acid, glycerin, vitamin B5, and the label’s prebiotic thermal water come together for a versatile serum apt at hydrating, soothing, and strengthening the skin barrier. That said, it’s excellent to quell—or prevent—dryness or alleviate skin sensitivities, pairing well with virtually any other ingredient in your routine.
  • Editor’s Experience: “This is one of my desert island skin-care picks. Its soothing, strengthening, and hydrating properties would surely do my complexion well in the dry, tepid desert, but these benefits certainly ring true in any climate! I’m obsessed with its viscous, dewy texture that creates a sort of moisture barrier on skin’s surface.” —Kiana Murden, senior beauty shopping writer
  • Key Ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, vitamin B5, madecassoside

Everything You Need to Know

What does face serum actually do for your skin?

Put simply; Dale describes serums as “medicine” for your skin. And everyone has their own way of breaking down their power: “Serums deliver more concentrated versions of active ingredients to the skin,” explains dermatologist Dr. Julius Few, a plastic surgeon and founder of The Few Institute in Chicago and Los Angeles. “The purpose of the active ingredient can vary, from hydrating to skin brightening to wrinkle-reducing.”

A serum’s thin, concentrated formula allows it to treat skin concerns in a more targeted way than other products in a daily routine. “Serums can make the skin look and feel better with just a small amount—a little goes a long way,” says dermatologist Dr. Mona Gohara, associate clinical professor of Dermatology at Yale School of Medicine. “They’re a worthwhile addition, and I often recommend them to my patients.” Compared to moisturizers, serums are supercharged and “meant to deliver their specific skin-care benefit straight to the skin in a more potent, effective dose than a moisturizer,” according to Charlene Valledor, cosmetic chemist and president of SOS Beauty. New formulations from forward-thinking brands can even replace other products in your routine.

Ingredients to look for in Face Serums

Think of face serums are really impressive cocktails of the industry’s most potent ingredients—and unless you understand what each addition does, you may not be picking the right face serum for you. So, we tapped board-certified dermatologist Dr. Brendan Camp to explain ten of the most acclaimed skincare ingredients found in today’s face serums.

  • Vitamin C: “Vitamin C is an antioxidant, which means it helps to neutralize the negative impact of free oxygen radicals on skin cells,” says Camp. “Free radicals are unstable oxygen molecules that can damage cellular structures, like DNA, lipids, and proteins.”
  • Niacinamide: Per Camp, niacinamide is part of the B vitamin complex. “It is included in skincare products because of its tolerability, ability to calm irritated skin and address uneven skin tone.”
  • Retinol: “Retinols help regulate skin cell turnover, which can reduce the formation of blocked pores and the formation of acne,” he explains of the vitamin A derivative. “The long-term, regular use of retinol increases collagen production, which improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.”
  • Hyaluronic Acid: “As a humectant, hyaluronic acid attracts and retains water molecules in the skin,” he notes. “By improving skin’s hydration, this well-tolerated product improves the plumpness of skin and minimizes the appearance of fine lines.”
  • Peptides: Peptides, according to Camp, are the building blocks of proteins. “Structural proteins like collagen and elastin provide firmness and rigidity to skin. Peptides are included in skincare products because they may signal the skin to produce more structural proteins.”
  • Centella Asiatica: “Centella asiatica is a plant-based compound known for its calming and anti-inflammatory properties,” Camp explains. “It helps repair the skin barrier, and is especially helpful in those with more sensitive skin or who are prone to eczema and rosacea.”
  • Squalane: “Similar in properties to the skin’s own natural sebum, squalane is an effective emollient and moisturizer,” he says. “It is well-tolerated and keeps skin smooth, soft, and hydrated.”
  • AHAs: Camp explains that AHAs, or “alpha-hydroxy acids, like lactic acid and glycolic acid, are gentle exfoliants that help skin shed dead skin cells to reveal brighter, healthier skin.”
  • BHAs: On the other hand, “beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs), like salicylic acid, are lipophilic, which means they can commingle with oil in pores. This property enables BHAs to be effective at treating acne-prone skin.”
  • Growth Factors: “Examples of growth factors used in skin care products include epidermal growth factor (EGF), fibroblast growth factor (FGF), and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta),” he details. “They are included in skin care products because of their effect on cellular activity and tissue repair to address signs of aging.”

How to Pick The Best Face Serum for Your Skin

The range of options now encompasses solutions for a range of skin concerns. “Serum offerings were a bit limited in the past; we didn’t have acne serums or serums for skin during pregnancy. Today, serums are more nuanced, appreciating one size doesn’t fit all here,” says Gohara. McLeod-Valentine trains regulars on what to use, and how to use it.

  • Skin Concern: “I explain to my clients that serums can be used to target specific concerns like wrinkles, dehydration, tone, elasticity, etc.,” he says.
  • Application: For application, newcomers can go by feel: “Simple rule of thumb, the lighter a product’s texture or more intense its use of active ingredients dictates the order of application with these being used first and each subsequent product being layered on top,” says McLeod-Valentine. “Cleanser, then toner or essence, then serum, and then cream.” At night, you can stop there. For day, experts recommend adding on an SPF as the final flourish.
  • Dermatologist Tested: Camp explains that products labeled “dermatologist-tested” help provide an elixir’s trustworthiness and dependability, where the formula was tested and signed off by a dermatologist. “The testing may have been done to evaluate tolerability or sensitivity, but typically does not imply anything about the product’s efficacy,” he notes.

When should I apply a face serum?

You should apply face serum after cleansing, but before moisturizing, “ideally on slightly damp skin to help it absorb better,” says Dr. Gohara. As for the time of day, it largely depends on the type of serum and active ingredient. “Morning serums often focus on protection and brightness, like antioxidants and vitamin C, while nighttime serums lean toward repair and renewal, such as retinol or peptides,” she says. Also, she recommends following it with a moisturizer (and sunscreen, if you’re applying it for daytime) to help seal in those active ingredients.

How long does it take to see results from a face serum?

Ultimately, it depends on the active ingredients. But for the most part, “serums show visible changes within four to eight weeks with consistent use,” says Dr. Gohara. “Hydrating serums may deliver an instant glow, while those targeting pigmentation or wrinkles take longer as skin cells renew.” Think of it as exercise for your face: “Steady, consistent effort pays off over time,” she says.

When we test and review a product, we take a holistic approach to deliver well-rounded product recommendations. First, we lean on Vogue’s vast network of experts—from board-certified dermatologists to celebrity estheticians—to gain professional acumen on the industry’s standout products, ones these specialists would actually use on their clients. 11 Best Shampoos for Dry Scalp 2025, According to Dermatologists

by jummy84 September 3, 2025
written by jummy84

Dry scalp and dandruff often get lumped together, but they’re actually different issues. “Dandruff is caused by a skin condition called seborrheic dermatitis, which is linked to a yeast called Malassezia that naturally lives on the skin,” says Iris Rubin, MD, a board-certified dermatologist. “For dryness and flaking caused by seborrheic dermatitis, dandruff shampoos, which include ingredients such as ketoconazole, selenium sulfide, salicylic acid, or zinc pyrithione, can be a big help.”

A dry, flaky scalp, however, might be triggered by something else entirely—like contact dermatitis or a reaction to hair products. With that in mind, treating a dry scalp as if it’s dandruff might not help—and, in some cases, could even make it worse. “If you’re unsure whether your dry, itchy scalp is due to dry skin, seborrheic dermatitis, or contact dermatitis, it’s best to schedule an appointment with a dermatologist,” says Dr. Rubin.

Dermatologists share how anxiety and stress trigger breakouts, hair loss and ageing: ‘It worsens skin conditions’ | Health

Stress affects more than just your mind, it can manifest physically in many ways, with one of the most noticeable signs appearing on your skin. HT Lifestyle reached out to experts to understand how anxiety and tension impact skin health and what you can do about it. (Also read: Dermatologists bust common myths around anti-ageing treatments and explain what really works: ‘Balance is key’ )

Anxiety and stress can significantly impact skin health, doctors warn. (Shutterstock)

What’s the connection between face and stress

“Stress and anxiety disturb your mind so much that it can create havoc in the body, causing a number of health issues that can be both frustrating and embarrassing. Issues ranging from acne, eczema, hyperpigmentation to hair loss and skin sensitivity, the impact of stress on your skin can be significant,” says Dr Viral Desai, board-certified super specialist, cosmetic plastic and hair transplant surgeon, and Medical Director, DHI India.

Bringing his expertise to the same Dr Satish Bhatia, board-certified dermatologist at the Indian Cancer Society in Mumbai, shared, “In today’s fast-paced world, with increasing workloads and deadlines, anxiety has become a common part of our lifestyle. Anxiety is a form of stress that affects the endocrine system, leading to hormonal changes. Hormones such as cortisol, epinephrine, and adrenaline, the body’s “fight or flight” response, trigger various physical changes associated with anxiety.

How stress and anxiety show up on face

“When you’re feeling stressed or anxious, your body’s ‘fight or flight’ response is triggered, which results in the release of stress hormones like cortisol,” says Dr Desai. According to her, these hormones can disrupt your skin’s natural balance, leading to:

  • Acne breakouts: Increased oil production and inflammation that can cause pimples, blackheads and clogged pores.
  • Eczema flare-ups: Stress can also trigger eczema symptoms, leading to red, itchy, and inflamed skin.
  • Hair loss: Telogen effluvium, a condition caused by stress, can lead to excessive hair shedding which if not taken care of; can lead to decreased density gradually.
  • Skin sensitivity: Stress can make your skin more sensitive and hence the individual might overreact with redness, irritation, and reactions to products or environmental factors.
  • Hyperpigmentation: chronic stress can lead to melasma due to the hormonal imbalances caused.
  • Skin ageing: Stress can accelerate skin ageing by reducing collagen production, leading to fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots.
  • Rosacea: Chronic or severe Stress can trigger rosacea symptoms, which may cause redness, flushing, and visible blood vessels.
  • Itching and rashes: Stress can cause or worsen skin conditions like psoriasis, leading to itchy, scaly patches and rashes.

“These hormonal shifts can increase oil production, cause inflammation, and lead to skin irritation. In people with uncontrolled diabetes, thyroid disorders, or Cushing’s syndrome, anxiety-related hormonal imbalance can make the skin appear dry, trigger acne, rosacea, eczema, or even cause thickening and darkening of the skin known as Acanthosis Nigricans. Patients may also experience thinning or loss of hair,” says Dr Bhatia.

He adds, “For those with underlying skin conditions like acne, eczema, or psoriasis, anxiety-related stress can worsen symptoms or trigger flare-ups. The release of cortisol during stress and anxiety causes inflammation under the skin, which may accelerate ageing by reducing collagen and elastic fibres and leading to the loss of facial fat pads, making the skin appear older and tired. Anxiety-related skin issues are often psychological as well. Emotional distress from visible skin problems can create a vicious cycle, anxiety worsens skin issues, and worsening skin issues fuel further anxiety.”

How to manage stress-related skin issues

According to Dr Desai, while stress is an inevitable part of life, you may still manage it in various ways :

  • Stress-free activities: Engage in activities that help you relax, such as meditation, yoga, or deep breathing exercises.
  • Get enough sleep: 7-8 hours of sleep per night is the key to help regulate stress hormones and support skin & overall health.
  • Use gentle skincare products: Choose products that are fragrance & carcinogenic preservative-free and hypoallergenic to minimise irritation.
  • Seek professional help: Consult a dermatologist to address underlying skin issues and get a personalised skincare and treatment plan. Treatments like chemical peels, lasers, and medicines might help reduce the visual impact.

“Breaking this cycle requires a holistic approach. There is a strong correlation between skin diseases and anxiety, with anxiety often decreasing as age increases. Along with consulting a dermatologist, psychological intervention can be crucial, especially for younger patients dealing with skin conditions,” says Dr Bhatia.

9 Best Undereye Patches We Tested 2025, Approved by Dermatologists

We love our Korean face masks, so it’s no surprise that we’re also a fan of K-beauty under eye treatments too. These hydrogel patches are packed with collagen, caffeine, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid and peptides–and believe us when we say, they’re no joke. They do a great job at softening, evening out and depuffing the area in just a few uses.

Testing notes: “I was really impressed with these hydrogel eye patches. Word to the wise, they are a bit sticky and goopy during application, but this formula melts down to a nice lightweight serum while sitting on the undereye area. My eyes were particularly dark and puffy when I tested these, and I think they did a great job of brightening and softening my fine lines in the area. Not to mention, I love that they’re hot pink,” says Glamour’s Kilkeary.

  • Material: Gel
  • Key Ingredients: Collagen, niacinamide, caffeine, hyaluronic acid, peptides
  • Number of Patches: 30 pairs

While in-office procedures bear the standard for reversing signs of aging, don’t discount the powers of the best body lotions for mature skin. “When used consistently, anti-aging lotions can improve the skin’s appearance by reducing fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots,” says Pearl Rimtepathip, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at MetroDerm in Georgia. “They can also improve skin tone, texture, and hydration, which helps with the overall appearance of the skin. I like to think of anti-aging body lotions as a key tool for skin maintenance.”

Best for Sensitive Skin

La Roche-Posay Lipikar AP+ Triple Repair Moisturizing Cream

Jump to review

Of course—like any skin-care product—the best body lotion for aging skin isn’t a one-size-fits-all prescription. That’s why we’ve tapped the pros. Ahead, dermatologists break down the best body lotions, body creams, and body balms for sensitive skin, crepey skin, and more. Happy moisturizing!

In This Story

Best Overall: Osea Anti-Aging Body Balm

  • Why We Love It: Malibu-based Osea specializes in “skincare from the sea,” and powers its products with seaweed that hydrates and firms the skin while swathing it in antioxidant protection. With a light, silky texture, the brand’s body balm combines the hydrating properties of a body lotion with the anti-aging effects of a potent serum. It’s made with Alaria seaweed to improve skin’s elasticity and give it a firmer look, while a blend of natural oils leaves the skin feeling smooth as a siren song. What’s more, the balm’s spa-like scent of jasmine, rose-geranium, and basil brings a dose of aromatherapy to mature-skin maintenance. “This formula is rich in seaweed and plant-based oils, which help lock in moisture and provide antioxidant support,” says Kristina Collins, MD, FAAD, a double board-certified dermatologist and Mohs micrographic surgeon based in Austin. “It’s a great option for those looking for a clean, nourishing product with a lightweight feel that still delivers noticeable hydration.”
  • Key Ingredients: Alaria seaweed, natural oils (coconut, acai, passionfruit, babassu)
  • Size: 5 fl oz

Best for Sensitive Skin: La Roche-Posay Lipikar AP Triple Repair Moisturizing Cream

La Roche-Posay

Lipikar AP+ Triple Repair Moisturizing Cream

  • Why We Love It: Infused with the French brand’s hero ingredient—thermal spring water that soothes the skin with minerals and antioxidants— La Roche-Posay’s body cream is a dermatologist-favorite. “This is one of the few creams I always keep next to my sink,” says Peter Bittar, MD, a double board-certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon at Miami Dermatology & Laser Institute. “It has a thick and luxurious feel without being greasy, and it has both ceramides and niacinamide to hydrate and soothe the skin.” Corey L. Hartman, MD, founder of Skin Wellness Dermatology in Birmingham, Alabama, is also a fan of the French-pharmacy classic. “It’s especially effective for dry, sensitive, or eczema-prone skin,” he notes.
  • Key Ingredients: La Roche-Posay prebiotic thermal spring water, ceramide 3, shea butter
  • Size: 13.52 fl oz

Best With Peptides: Nécessaire The Body Lotion

  • Why We Love It: Like a supplement regimen for the skin, “This is a solid multi-vitamin lotion that has a great mix of niacinamide, vitamins C and E, and omega fatty acids,” Dr. Bittar says. “It also has shea butter and glycerin to hydrate and strengthen the skin.” The niacinamide in the formula supoprts the skin barrier to boost hydration; it also minimizes inflammation, redness, and dark spots. Meanwhile, the vitamins, delivered via skin-softening plant oils, help moisturize and firm the skin. With a seal of approval from the National Eczema Foundation, the dermatologist-tested lotion also has a microdose of peptides to stimulate collagen production. Available in a fragrance-free version—always Dr. Bittar’s pick for sensitive, aging skin—the body lotion also comes in Santal, Eucalyptus, and Hinoki scents.
  • Key Ingredients: 2.5% niacinamide, peptides, plant butter and oils
  • Size: 15.2 oz

Best Body Cream: CeraVe Moisturizing Cream

  • Why We Love It: “This is a gold-standard moisturizer,” Dr. Hartman says. “It combines ceramides and hyaluronic acid to deeply hydrate and reinforce the skin barrier.” Not to mention, the product can be found at nearly any drugstore. “It’s affordable, accessible, and great for daily use on aging or dry skin,” Dr. Hartman adds. The itch-and-flake-quelling cream is also a multitasker. It can be used on the face and the body, and can also step in as a hand cream; plus, it’s deemed safe for the whole family to use.
  • Key Ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, ceramides
  • Size: 19 oz

Best with Retinol: Paula’s Choice Skin-Smoothing Retinol Body Treatment

Paula’s Choice

Retinol Skin-Smoothing Body Treatment

  • Why We Love It: “This moisturizer is primarily shea-butter-based with a few great actives in it,” Dr. Bittar says. “It has vitamin C, vitamin E, and retinol all in the same bottle. There are not many products with all three of those ingredients.” When used together, the ingredients strengthen and protect the skin, combating fine lines and wrinkles while providing moisture and antioxidant protection. The treatment also has a silky texture. “It goes on very smoothly,” Dr. Bittar confirms.
  • Key Ingredients: 0.1% retinol, shea butter, vitamins C and E, evening primrose oil
  • Size: 4 fl oz

Best Moisturizing: Augustinus Bader The Body Lotion

  • Why We Love It: By creating TFC-8—a patented ingredient that harnesses peptides, amino acids, and vitamins to support skin-cell renewal—biomedical scientist and physician Augustinus Bader became a skincare hero for legions of smooth-skinned fans. (Among them? Victoria Beckham and Sofia Coppola.) Made with the prized complex and moisture-locking technology, the brand’s body lotion sinks in quickly to hydrate and soften the skin. “This product is worth the splurge,” says Anna Chacon, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist and teledermatologist based in Coral Gables, Florida. “It is super hydrating and great for those with dry skin looking to moisturize and nourish the area. It will leave your skin feeling smooth with shea butter, which also helps with skin elasticity.” She adds that the product is “perfect” for those looking to minimize the appearance of stretch marks.
  • Key Ingredients: TFC-8
  • Size: 3.38 fl oz

Best for a Luminous Glow: La Mer The Reparative Body Lotion

La Mer

The Reparative Body Lotion

  • Why We Love It: There’s long been an ocean of buzz surrounding La Mer, with everyone from Jennifer Lopez to Kim Kardashian hooked on its Miracle Broth. The brand’s signature ingredient—a nutrient-rich blend of sustainably harvested sea kelp, vitamins, and minerals—also has approval from medical pros. “La Mer effectively uses the power of sea kelp and algae in its skincare products,” Dr. Rimtepathip confirms. “Sea kelp and algae contain powerful antioxidants, minerals, collagen, and peptides. Combined with other ingredients—such as hyaluronic acid—kelp and algae can soothe skin, increase moisture, and reduce dullness.” In the brand’s glow-boosting body lotion, Miracle Broth is combined with Deconstructed Waters, a patented technology that optimizes the molecular structure of water to help it deliver ingredients more effectively to the skin.
  • Key Ingredients: Miracle Broth, Deconstructed Waters
  • Size: 5.4 oz

Best Drugstore: Gold Bond Age Renew Retinol Overnight Body & Face Lotion

Gold Bond

Age Renew Retinol Overnight Body & Face Lotion

  • Why We Love It: “For the price, if you are looking for a retinol lotion, I think this is a hard one to beat,” Dr. Bittar says of this under-$20 gem. “It is fragrance-free with a mix of several different moisturizers, and it has niacinamide, vitamin E, and retinol, which can help smooth the skin.” Note: This isn’t just Dr. Bittar’s pick for an affordable product—he deems it one of the best overall. “In my opinion, your body lotion typically should not be the most expensive part of your skin routine. Simple is often better!” he says.
  • Key Ingredients: Retinol and peptide complex
  • Size: 7 oz

Best With SPF: Dr. Few Skin Tightening + SPF 30 with DermaTight

  • Why We Love It: “The majority of what we see as signs of aging on the skin are, in fact, simply due to sun damage—think dark spots, thinning of the skin, wrinkles, and various growths, not to mention skin cancer,” Dr. Bittar says. “Even the bruising on older people’s forearms is ultimately due to UV light thinning out the collagen around our blood vessels, making them super delicate. I like to tell my patients that sunscreen is basically the fountain of youth in a bottle.” This iteration, created by the esteemed (and Gwyneth-Paltrow-adored) plastic surgeon Dr. Julius Few, pairs SPF 30 with the patented DermaTight. The complex was designed to smooth and firm lax or sagging skin in as little as 20 minutes. Its other patented ingredient, HP4, is a multi-peptide complex aimed at collagen production.
  • Key Ingredients: DermaTight, HP4, antioxidant-rich botanicals (Sacred Lotus, Yerba Mate, green tea, chamomile, peppermint extract, caffeine)
  • Size: 4.7 oz

Best for Cellulite: Tronque Triple Active Body Milk

  • Why We Love It: Targeting cellulite and water retention, Tronque’s satiny body milk draws on caffeine, green coffee, curry tree, and other plant-based ingredients to lift and tone. “This lotion also includes niacinamide and natural oils, which help brighten and support the skin barrier,” Dr. Collins notes. “It’s an elegant choice for sensitive skin types who want a lightweight yet effective hydrator with added skin-evening benefits.” According to Dr. Chacon, “This smooths the skin upon application—it is super luxurious. The ingredients help lift and tone the skin and address any elasticity concerns. It’s perfect for those looking to target cellulite and any skin-sagging.” Dr. Chacon adds that the body milk is also “super hydrating,” thanks to its hyaluronic acid.
  • Key Ingredients: Niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, green coffee, caffeine, curry tree, Arica Montana flower extract
  • Size: 6.76 fl oz

Best for Crepey Skin: SkinMedica Firm & Tone Lotion for Body

SkinMedica

Firm & Tone Lotion For Body

  • Why We Love It: Clinically proven to improve the appearance of crepey skin, “This formula goes beyond hydration by targeting firmness and elasticity with peptides and antioxidants,” says Dr. Hartman. “It’s designed for areas prone to laxity, like the thighs or abdomen, where patients often notice age-related changes.” The dermatologist-approved body lotion—which has a lightweight, fast-absorbing texture—can also help to even out the skin tone. One of Vogue’s favorite tightening lotions, the product is also approved by Margarita Lolis, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in New Jersey. “[This lotion’s] technology targets five pathways involved in laxity and fat,” Lolis previously told Vogue. “It also has peptides and botanical extracts that help maintain natural levels of collagen and elastin.”
  • Key Ingredients: Peptides, shitake mushroom, lemon balm, green microalgae
  • Size: 6 fl oz

Best for Hydration: U Beauty The Super Hydrator Body

  • Why We Love It: Developed with exclusive SIREN capsule technology, which intuitively delivers long-chain hyaluronic acid to the driest areas of the body, U Beauty’s Super Hydrator Body brings the benefits of its beloved face cream below the neck. (Of the latter, Casa Cipriani’s lead esthetician Samantha Susca has told Vogue: “It’s the ultimate rich cream.”) Also formulated with hyaluronic acid, shea butter, collagen, peptides, and niacinamide, the anti-aging powerhouse is as deeply hydrating as its name implies. It can also visibly smooth crepey skin.
  • Key Ingredients: Shea butter, hyaluronic acid, collagen, peptides, niacinamide
  • Size: 6.7 fl oz

Best Collagen Cream: Sol de Janeiro Beija-Flor Elasti-Cream

Sol de Janeiro

Collagen Boosting Beija Flor Elasti-Cream Body Cream

  • Why We Love It: The appeal of Sol de Janeiro’s elasticity-boosting cream goes beyond its pretty pink packaging—and its lychee, jasmine, and ocean-air-spiked scent. Made with the natural retinol alternative cacay oil, “This is a fan favorite, and for good reason,” Dr. Chacon says. “Collagen is a key ingredient here, and as we know, collagen will help firm and plump the skin and support skin elasticity.” She notes that the inclusion of coconut oil and glycerin gives the product a hydrating punch that makes it ideal for anyone looking to address fine lines. “It’s also perfect for those with dry skin looking to deeply hydrate,” she says. Plus, with a thick, ultra-creamy consistency akin to body butter, the product feels luxurious on the skin. Just note that some mature or sensitive skin types can be reactive to fragrances, so be sure to patch-test the fruity-floral salve if you have any doubts.
  • Key Ingredients: Cacay oil, polypeptides, plant squalane
  • Size: 8.1 fl oz

Everything You Need to Know

Do anti-aging body lotions work?

“The short answer is, anti-aging body lotions can work,” Dr. Bittar says. “After sun damage, dryness is one of the biggest things that can give our skin an older appearance. So a solid moisturizer can go a long way to giving our skin a smooth and youthful look.”

He notes that certain anti-aging ingredients, such as niacinamide and ammonium lactate, can help with dark spots and skin texture—but only to a certain degree. “If the damage is significant, then lotions will likely not be enough,” he says. “In these cases, in-office procedures such as laser treatments, bio-stimulatory injectables, or photodynamic therapy can help to turn back the clock.”

Which ingredients are best for aging skin?

“Sunscreen is the most important anti-aging ingredient and has the biggest payoff,” Dr. Rimtepathip says. “I recommend my patients use at least SPF 30 to block harmful sun rays, and I remind them to reapply frequently.” She and Dr. Bittar also recommend the following ingredients for mature patients:

  • Vitamin C & Vitamin E: “These are antioxidants that reduce cellular damage, improve skin tone, and can prevent dark spots from forming.”
  • Retinoids (retinol/tretinoin): “Retinoids are one of the best-studied and most widely recommended products to combat aging,” Dr. Rimtepathip says. “Retinoids stimulate collagen production, improve texture, and reduce wrinkles.”
  • Peptides: “These help build collagen and elastin, which, in turn, help decrease sagging skin, fine lines, and wrinkles,” Dr. Rimtepathip says. “However, the effects are usually mild.”
  • Hyaluronic acid: Dr. Rimtepathip calls this “a powerful humectant.” She explains that humectants can help increase water absorption and reduce moisture loss. In turn, “This reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, because hydrated skin is more plump,” she says.
  • Niacinamide: This is a go-to anti-aging ingredient for many dermatologists, including Dr. Bittar. “Niacinamide has a host of helpful properties as it helps minimize inflammation and redness and can also help brighten dark spots,” he says. “It is not a hero ingredient that is going to make a huge impact by itself, but it plays a great supporting role.”
  • Shea Butter: “It’s popular for a reason,” Dr. Bittar says. “It’s a fat derived from the shea tree, and is a simple and effective natural moisturizer. It hydrates the skin while feeling rich and soft.”
  • Ceramides: “Ceramides are lipids, or fatty acids, that make up a large portion of your skin and are crucial to maintaining a healthy barrier,” Dr. Bittar says. “Moisturizers with ceramides can help support this barrier function and lock in moisture while keeping out irritants.”
  • Peter Bittar, MD, is a double board-certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon at Miami Dermatology & Laser Institute.
  • Anna Chacon, MD, FAAD, is a board-certified dermatologist and teledermatologist based in Coral Gables, Florida.
  • Kristina Collins, MD, FAAD, is a double board-certified dermatologist and Mohs micrographic surgeon based in Austin.
  • Corey L. Hartman, MD, is the founder of Skin Wellness Dermatology in Birmingham, Alabama.
  • Pearl Rimtepathip, MD, is a board-certified dermatologist at MetroDerm in Hiram, Georgia.
