Denzel Washington Reveals What He Wants To Be Remembered For In Life

In a poignantly reflective moment, legendary actor Denzel Washington opened up about how he hopes to be remembered, offering a heartfelt glimpse into the values that define him beyond the silver screen.

During a wide-ranging conversation with longtime collaborator Spike Lee on Apple TV, the two icons discussed Washington’s newest film Highest 2 Lowest, as well as deeper themes of legacy, faith, and purpose.

At one point, Lee posed a simple but weighty question: how would Washington like history to remember him? The veteran actor’s response was both humble and profound.

“A man of faith, a man of God, a human who’s made a ton of mistakes,” Washington responded. “A humble man, god-loving, wife-loving, children-loving, who did the best he could with what he had.”

While audiences may know him as one of the greatest actors of his generation—with unforgettable roles in Malcolm X, Training Day, Glory, American Gangster, and The Book of Eli—Washington made it clear that his most important legacy lies far beyond Hollywood accolades.

A devoted husband and father, Washington has never shied away from the love he has for his wife, Pauletta Washington, or his children, John David, 41, Katia, 37, and twins Malcolm and Olivia, 34.

Still, his achievements are staggering: two Academy Awards, two Golden Globes, a Tony Award, and nominations for both Emmys and a Grammy.

Released Aug. 15, Highest 2 Lowest is the latest addition to his storied career. Directed by Spike Lee, the film stars Washington alongside A$AP Rocky, with the pair reportedly forming a genuine bond during filming, trading thoughts on life, love, and music.

Yet for all the awards and iconic roles, Washington wants to be remembered not just for his art—but for his heart. In an industry often focused on image, he stands out as someone who values character above celebrity.

bitchy | Denzel Washington: ‘I don’t watch movies, man… I’m tired of movies’

Denzel Washington has been doing a lot of promo for Spike Lee’s Highest 2 Lowest, which I still haven’t seen. Sidenote: I find Spike Lee’s late-career work fascinating, but one of two extremes – either he’s making one of the best movies in his filmography, or one of the worst. Y’all will have to let me know which one H2L is. In any case, Denzel is doing a lot, and I think that’s out of respect for Spike, because otherwise, he probably wouldn’t bother at this point. In the past year especially, Denzel has sounded “over it,” to put it politely. He’s over the industry, he’s over the awards seasons, he’s over the hustling. As it turns out, he’s even over watching movies.

Denzel Washington joined GQ for a video interview with his “Highest 2 Lowest” director Spike Lee and co-star A$AP Rocky and made the surprising revelation that he no longer watches movies. The two-time Oscar winner admitted it may be because he’s just made too many of them. Washington has well over 40 film credits under his belt after starting his career in 1981’s “Carbon Copy.”

“I don’t watch movies, man. I really don’t,” Washington said. “I’m just being honest with you! I don’t watch movies! I don’t go to the movies. I don’t watch movies. … I’m tired of movies. Yeah.”

When Lee asked Washington how many movies he’s made, the actor responded: “Too many. I think 50!”

It might be the situation of “I do this all day, I don’t want to do it during my off-hours.” Which is sort of who I’ve become too, in a much smaller way than Denzel. I write and read about pop culture, royals and celebrities all day for my job – on my off-hours, I just want to watch tennis and decompress, not slog my way through a new movie or show every other night. It’s bad, I know. I do watch new stuff, btw, but I’ve become more fickle. In Denzel’s case… he’s been in so many movies, he’s directed and produced, he’s done it all and worked with so many people. I can totally see how he’s reached an age where he just doesn’t care anymore.

Denzel Washington Is “Tired of Movies” Possibly Because He Makes Them

Denzel Washington says that when it comes to watching movies in his downtime, he is officially over it. The 70-year-old star recently spoke with GQ where he admitted that he’s not really interested in cinema anymore, despite building one of the most respected and history-making careers in Hollywood.

In the conversation alongside his Highest 2 Lowest director, Spike Lee, and costar A$AP Rocky, Washington kept it real when asked about film. “Do you have any dolly shots of this guy that you admire?” A$AP teased, referencing Lee’s iconic filmography, to which Washington replied, “I don’t watch movies, man. I really don’t.”

Both Lee and Rocky laughed at the confession, but Denzel doubled down: “I’m just being honest with you. I don’t watch movies, man. I don’t go to the movies, I don’t watch movies.” When pressed on whether his disinterest stems from being a filmmaker and actor himself, Washington admitted, “Probably. I’m tired of movies.”

Later, when Lee asked how many films he’s made over his career, the Training Day star shrugged, saying, “Too many,” and estimated he’s appeared in around 50 films. This isn’t the first time Washington has kept it too real about Hollywood. During the press run for Highest 2 Lowest, he also said he’s not concerned with industry accolades, even dismissing some of his own Oscar wins.

“I don’t do it for Oscars. I really don’t care about that kind of stuff,” he told Jake’s Takes. “There are times I won and shouldn’t have won… and didn’t win and should’ve won. Man gives the award, God gives the reward.”

He even poked fun at his two Academy Awards for Training Day and Glory, saying, “People ask, ‘Where do you keep it?’ I say, ‘Next to the other one.’ I’m not bragging, I’m just telling you how I feel. On my last day, they won’t do me a bit of good!”

Despite Washington’s nonchalantness, his legacy speaks volumes. His Oscar wins have made history, with his Glory win cementing him as the second Black actor to take home Best Supporting Actor at the time, following Louis Gossett Jr. He was also the first Black actor to earn two nominations in that category.

Beyond the trophies, his filmography includes: Malcolm X, Philadelphia, American Gangster, Remember the Titans, Training Day, and most recently, Gladiator II.

Denzel Washington Says He’s ‘Tired’ Of Movies: ‘I Don’t Watch Movies’

Despite being a prolific actor and expert in his craft, two-time Oscar winner Denzel Washington said he’s over cinema.

In a recent interview with GQ paired with Highest 2 Lowest filmmaker Spike Lee and co-star A$AP Rocky (née Rakim Mayers), Washington joked he’s “tired” of movies — likely because he has made dozens. The topic came up as A$AP Rocky was discussing his favorite double dolly shots emblematic of Lee’s directorial technique.

While he listed Malcolm X and Crooklyn, when asking Washington of his favorites, the latter responded: “I don’t watch movies, man. I really don’t,” prompting laughter from Lee and Mayers.

The Gladiator II star continued, “I’m just being honest with you! I don’t watch movies, man! I don’t go to the movies. I don’t watch movies,” having added earlier that he doesn’t rewatch his own features as he doesn’t feel the need to revisit the past.

“Is it because you make ’em?” A$AP Rocky asked.

“Probably. You know, I’m tired of movies.”

When Lee questioned how many credits Washington had racked up, the Othello actor responded: “Too many. I think 50!” (Indeed, the actor’s IMDb boasts multiple entries over that figure.)

Washington’s signature blunt declaration comes after his recent comments about being “not that interested” in winning more Academy Awards after his triumphs for 2002’s Training Day and 1990’s Glory.

“I’ve been at this a long time, and there’s times when I’ve won, shouldn’t have won, didn’t win, should have won,” he said earlier this month. “Man gives the award, God gives the award. I’m not that interested in Oscars. People say, ‘Well, where do you keep it?’ I say, ‘Next to the other one.’”

Highest 2 Lowest debuted in select theaters Aug. 15 and will soon be available to stream on Apple TV+ beginning Sept. 5.
