A handful of Democrats and one Independent reached a key, tentative deal with Republicans to potentially end the historic government shutdown. As lawmakers face mounting pressure from airlines, Americans are hopeful that the agreement will end the pause and finally reopen the government.

As multiple figures from the left speak out against their colleagues for temporarily siding with the GOP, many are curious who the eight politicians are.

Below, find out which Democrats reached an agreement with the GOP to potentially end the government shutdown.

Did the Government Reopen Yet?

No, the government is still shut down as of November 10, 2025. The pause began on October 1, making this the longest shutdown in American history.

Although a handful of Democrats chose to side with Republicans temporarily, there’s still no definitive end in sight for the shutdown. If a new proposal is approved in the Senate, it will be passed down to the House for review.

The 8 Democrats Who Voted to Potentially Open the Government

It turns out that it was actually seven Democrats who sided with Republicans on November 9, and one Independent. The eight politicians are John Fetterman from Pennsylvania, Catherine Cortez Masto from Nevada, Jacky Rosen from Nevada, Dick Durbin from Illinois, Jeanne Shaheen from New Hampshire, Maggie Hassan from New Hampshire, Tim Kaine from Virginia and Angus King from Maine, who is the Independent in the group.

Kaine spoke to reporters from Capitol Hill that evening when the Senate adjourned. He explained how he and a few of his colleagues reached an agreement with the GOP.

“I have long said that to earn my vote, we need to be on a path toward fixing Republicans’ health care mess and to protect the federal workforce,” Kaine said, according to The Hill. “This legislation will protect federal workers from baseless firings, reinstate those who have been wrongfully terminated during the shutdown, and ensure federal workers receive back pay, as required by a law I got passed in 2019. That’s a critical step that will help federal employees and all Americans who rely on government services.”

When Will the House Vote on the Shutdown?

According to multiple outlets, House members were told that votes on government funding are expected to take place this week. As long as the Senate passes the new deal, the House could vote on the funding sometime this week.

Jon Stewart Slams Democrats for Ending Government Shutdown

by jummy84 November 11, 2025

On this week’s episode of “The Daily Show,” Jon Stewart came after Democrats for voting to end the government shutdown without extending subsidies for the Affordable Care Act, which is the primary issue the Left has fought for throughout the 41-day stoppage.

“They fucking caved on the shutdown,” Stewart said, fuming. “Not even a full week removed from the best election night results they’ve had in years, seven Democratic senators and an ‘Independent’ voted with their Republican counterparts to end the shutdown and reopen the government. And did they get their extended healthcare subsidies?”

Stewart turned to a sound bite from ABC 7 for the answer, “Democrats wanted the deal to include extending subsidies for the Affordable Care Act. Instead, they got a promise to vote on it at a later date.”

“I cannot fucking believe it,” Stewart continued. “You had the wind at your back! Election victories all over the country. The new Sydney Sweeney movie was box office bupkis! Apparently, her new MAGA fanbase didn’t show up in droves to see a biopic about a lesbian professional boxer who overcomes domestic violence to live her truth. Who could have seen that coming? Democrats, you sold out the entire shutdown not to get what you wanted, but for a promise to not get what you wanted later.”

The legislation to end the nation’s longest government shutdown in history passed in the Senate Monday night. However, it still needs to pass through the House and then get a signature from Donald Trump. With a Republican majority in the House, it is likely to pass, and Trump is expected to sign the bill with full support from the Right.

Jon Stewart Defends Democrats Holding The Line In Government Shutdown

by jummy84 October 7, 2025

Day six of the government shutdown and The Daily Show host Jon Stewart is defending Democrats‘ decision to not capitulate to Senate demands.

“Those bastards! It’s like they don’t even want people to die of generally preventable diseases,” he quipped. “I wonder what this seemingly reasonable and narrow request will sound like when put through the Fox-o-meter.”

The mandates, which include extending Obamacare subsidies and reversing Medicaid cuts, were described by Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) on Fox Business as “healthcare for illegals, transgender surgery,” with Stewart admonishing that the trans community isn’t a “garnish you add on every talking point like you’re some transgender salt bae.”

Referencing president Donald Trump’s threats to cut Democratic priority programs and make additional federal firings, Stewart said, “So the trap is, if the Democrats shut down the government, Donald Trump takes advantage of the situation and begins to — I don’t know — trim programs Democrats care about, or maybe Donald Trump might let go of some federal workers, or Donald Trump might eliminate funding, only for blue states, or Donald Trump might fucking send in the National Guard but only into blue areas. In other words, to continue doing all this shit Trump has not needed any provocation or pretense or reason to already have been doing. Lo these past, God, it feels like fucking 80 years.”

Stewart then addressed a clip of Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, who told reporters the POTUS “takes no pleasure” in the government shutdown.

“The president takes no pleasure in this? The president takes only pleasure,” Stewart maintained. “Given the president’s vascular condition, this might be the only thing keeping him hard, I swear to you. His catchphrase was literally, ‘You’re fired.’ His only reason for getting up in the morning is vengeance.”

The political comic continued, lobbing a punch at ICE: “Suddenly, a small ask for people’s preservation of healthcare is a Molotov cocktail. Because, apparently, Republicans won’t be satisfied with 99.8% domination, they must have it all. ICE went from deporting the worst-of-the-worst to throwing grandmothers onto linoleum and zip-tying American children, and everyone’s just supposed to be cool with the new masked, incredibly well-funded paramilitary group.”

He added, referencing Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem being blocked from entering a building in Illinois to use the bathroom: “And Democrats are just reduced to petty gestures of restroom resistance.”

Stewart concluded, “Look, I’ve given Democrats an enormous amount of shit for their poor leadership: lack of specific and actionable plans, terrible messaging, abysmal wordplay. Did I mention poor leadership? But standing up for 75 million Americans in this moment to defend the rights of people to go into a little less medical debt seems like the least they can fucking do.”

bitchy | Politico: Democrats are mad about Kamala Harris’s book & her book tour

by jummy84 September 25, 2025
written by jummy84

Kamala Harris’s book, 107 Days, came out this week. Various outlets published advanced excerpts, including The Atlantic – go here to read. I’ll admit that I have not sat down and read much from the book yet. I felt the same way in 2017 when Hillary Clinton published her first book after the 2016 election – it simply felt too raw and I didn’t have enough emotional distance from what happened in that election to read Hillary’s recollections. It’s the exact same feeling with Kamala’s book, I was watching it unfold in real time, I know exactly how badly she got screwed over, and I know exactly how badly Americans f–ked up by not electing Kamala president.

While I’m not consuming much from Kamala’s book, I 100% support her right to talk about all of it, from how Joe Biden’s staff treated her, to how she felt forced to dim her shine in service to President Biden, to how tough it was to run a national campaign in that short amount of time. We’re more than three years out from the next presidential election, if we’re even having those anymore. Now is actually the time for Kamala to tell her story. I genuinely hope the book prompts some self-reflection from the Obama bros in particular, as well as Biden’s senior staffers. Win or lose, Kamala’s candidacy should have been a major housecleaning moment for the Democratic party, but it doesn’t sound like any of that is actually happening. Not when some Democrats can run to Politico to bitch about how Kamala’s book is distracting from… something??

Kamala Harris’ media blitz is doing little to temper the frustration bubbling among Democrats over her retelling of the 2024 election. Over the last 24 hours, the former vice president insisted she isn’t burning bridges in her own party, rejected the idea that her infamous interview on “The View” tipped the 2024 election and didn’t rule out another run for political office.

“In an era where Democrats need all hands on deck in the fight to protect the country and the constitution from the lawlessness of the Trump administration, she had a real opportunity to be a critical voice in the resistance,” said Michael Hardaway, a Democratic strategist who served as a senior adviser to House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. “This book seems to be unhelpful and divisive in a way that makes it hard for her to be the face of the party as we look to the future.”

More than six months after her losing election — and with Harris now back in the spotlight — her book, “107 Days,” has reopened wounds in a party still divided over who or what is primarily to blame for their sweeping losses and President Donald Trump’s return to the White House. Harris, for her part, argued on ABC’s “The View” on Tuesday that though “there were many factors,” ultimately, “we just didn’t have enough time.”

It’s not the first time a political memoir has prompted eyerolls. Hillary Clinton’s book tour in 2017 triggered a collective groan among infuriated Democrats, including one top donor who told POLITICO at the time “she should just zip it.” Biden, struggling to sell his post-presidency legacy, is expected to release his own White House memoir. Democrats privately worry the parade of scab-picking, backward-looking books isn’t helping the party move on, especially as its brand sinks to new lows in public polling.

“At a time when people are looking for a vision and leadership … and want to see leaders rise to the level of threat facing the country, it’s pretty crazy she chose to write a gossip book that prioritizes the pettiness of her politics,” said an adviser to a potential 2028 candidate granted anonymity to discuss the issue candidly. “It’s embarrassing for her, and for all Democrats, considering she was the leader of the party less than a year ago.”

[From Politico]

“…Has reopened wounds in a party still divided over who or what is primarily to blame for their sweeping losses…” The wounds weren’t closed, therefore Kamala isn’t “reopening” anything. Democrats were and are still bleeding, and I see Kamala’s book as a sort of political triage, and a necessary one at that. It’s wild to argue that Democrats are still fighting over the last election, and that’s why the literal Democratic presidential candidate shouldn’t put her two cents in about what went wrong and what Democrats could do better. Kamala understands that you have to actually assign blame to begin to figure out what went wrong – from what I’ve seen, she addresses some mistakes she made, and some of the mistakes the Biden administration made in how they used her. But she’s also just… telling the truth about a stagnated and outdated Democratic political class which is also to blame.
