Geena Davis Institute Study Shows Film Lacks Stories of Women Aging

by jummy84 December 5, 2025
written by jummy84

The Geena Davis Institute has unveiled a new study showing how menopause and aging are portrayed in the 100 top-grossing domestic films from 2009 to 2024 that prominently feature women ages 40 and older on screen.

Key findings in the study called, “Missing in action: Writing a new narrative for women in midlife on the big screen,” showed how menopause is nearly invisible: Of the 225 films prominently featuring a 40-plus female character released between 2009 and 2024, only 6% (or 14 films) mentioned menopause. These mentions were usually side comments. Only one film featured a prominent menopause storyline.

Furthermore, menopause was often used as a comedic device. When featured, it was used as a joke to explain women’s anger or mood swings, and even non-menopausal characters were assumed to be menopausal when they expressed anger.

The study also revealed that 40-plus female characters were appearing in fewer comedies, pointing to a strong link between menopause mentions and comedy.

The findings showed how general aging narratives were more frequent. Yet the narratives between men and women aging were vastly different. Women ages 40 and older on screen were twice as likely as men to have a narrative focused on physical aging (15% vs. 7%). Overall, 23 characters shown engaging in cosmetic treatments, 17 (74%) were women. Male characters’ treatments were minor (i.e., dye for graying hair, nose trimming, botox), while women’s treatments often involved surgery or fantastical interventions to restore youth (i.e., vaginal rejuvenation, brow lifts, liposuction).

Another finding showed the sad widow trope and how Hollywood narratives centered on grief and loneliness. In the 225 films that were analyzed, 19 featured “sad widows,” compared with eight featuring “sad widowers,” suggesting aging is more often framed as a story of loss for women than for men.

Findings showed there was a desire for better representation. Overall, 2 in 3 respondents (67%) agree on the importance of realistic portrayals of menopause on screen (72% men, 63% women). This signals a broad audience appetite for menopause stories that move beyond jokes or silence.

The report concluded that the absence of women over 50 in Hollywood, especially as romantic leads, likely reinforces negative stereotypes about women, aging and sexuality.

The study found that audiences across age, gender, and race want more realistic portrayals of menopause.

Madeline Di Nonno, President & CEO of the Geena Davis Institute said Hollywoood needs to do better. In a statement, Di Nonno said, “Womanhood is more than reproduction. One of the more damaging narratives about menopause is that it ‘feels like the finish line for women, whose value in society is being reduced to motherhood.’”

She went on to say, “Avoid characterizations of menopause that conflate womanhood with fertility, and work to provide a more nuanced and less reductive portrayal of womanhood that treats older women as multidimensional, fully fleshed-out characters. Laugh with menopausal women, not at them.”

The report will be unveiled at the Impact+Profit25 conference hosted by the SIE Society and Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs on Friday afternoon.

Actress Constance Zimmer, a panelist on at the conference commented on how menopause storylines almost never appear unless they’re comedic — and even then, they’re often inaccurate or dismissive. Zimmer called for Hollywood storytellers to be more authentic to female storytelling. In a statement, she said, ‘If we take my beloved character Quinn King for example, an unapologetic, revenge driven, crisis loving bad bitch who was clearly and silently going through perimenopause – i now know – having gone through it myself – that we missed so many layers to her story line. She wasn’t simply filled with rage – she was witnessing her entire life shift from the inside out. Menopause is not the side character – she is the leading lady.”

Dominique Debroux, producer of the documentary, “Wise Women” said, “The Geena Davis Institute’s data exposes these gaps, and the ‘Wise Women’ documentary adds the science showing that women’s contributions have always been far broader, strategic, communal, and essential to our successful evolution.” She went on to say, “The real barrier now is investment. There is no shortage of powerful stories about women’s identity, purpose, and wisdom. What’s missing is the willingness to finance them, somehow overlooking the size of the audience (70 million 50+ women just in the US & Canada). Hollywood needs to support stories that reflect women’s true range, not just their appearance.”

The study will be published here.

How a Wild Night Out Made ‘Little House’s Melissa Gilbert a Pal to Sammy Davis Jr.

During an episode of The Patrick Labyorteaux Sheaux, the former Little House on the Prairie star Melissa Gilbert was asked by her one-time Walnut Grove dweller: “What was the most Hollywood moment of your life?” Her answer was an astounding tale about a single night out with Rob Lowe that quickly spiraled into a veritable cavalcade of 1980s celebrities and showbiz heavyweights.

Billed by host Patrick Labyorteaux as “the most amazing Hollywood story you will ever hear,” it was a wild, star-studded snapshot of an era when fame, excess, and coincidence all collided in one unforgettable night.

Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue and Nickel 1965 Receive Special Reissues

by jummy84 October 11, 2025
written by jummy84

A pair of classic Miles Davis releases are set for the reissue treatment.

Davis’ iconic 1959 album, Kind of Blue, will be issued by Analogue Productions as a 180-gram double LP 33 1/3 edition, with Side 4 cut at 45 RPM, on October 31st. The pressing is sourced from the original Classic Records parts mastered by Bernie Grundman directly from the original master tape.

Davis aficionados will be keen to know that long-standing speed issues caused by the motor on Columbia’s 3-track master recorder running slow that affected the first three tracks on the original recording (“So What,” “Freddie Freeloader,” and “Blue in Green”), have been corrected on this edition.

The album is packaged in a heavyweight Stoughton Printing “tip-on” gatefold jacket with a scuff-resistant matte finish, completed by a four-panel insert featuring speed-correction details and liner notes by the late music critic, Robert Palmer.

Pressed on standard black vinyl, there will also be a limited-edition blue vinyl version, limited to just 1,500 copies, available exclusively through Acoustic Sounds. In addition to the speed-corrected main program, Side 4 features an alternate take of “Flamenco Sketches” cut at 45 RPM for maximum fidelity. Pre-orders are ongoing.

Then, on January 30th, 2026, Columbia/Legacy Recordings will release Miles Davis – The Complete Live at the Plugged Nickel 1965 on vinyl and CD for the first time in 30 years.

The recordings feature Davis’s Second Great Quintet, which consisted of Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams. Captured over two nights in a small Chicago club, the band was inspired by drummer Williams to play “anti-music,” culminating in their well-honed setlist being turned “inside out.” “We found ways to make the old music sound as new as the new music we were recording,” is how Davis described the results.

Originally released in 1995 as a Mosaic Records limited-edition LP box set, The Complete Live at the Plugged Nickel has been out of print every since. The 10xLP reissue edition comes in a newly designed slipcase with 10 individual jackets, along with a 40-page booklet. It will also be available in an 8xCD edition. Both will feature over seven hours of music, new liner notes by Syd Schwartz, and classic material by jazz historian Bob Blumenthal. Pre-orders are ongoing.

As a preview of the larger collection, a special standalone 2LP set, Live At The Plugged Nickel: December 23, 1965 – Second Set, will be released for RSD Black Friday on November 28th.

Kristin Davis was shocked by And Just Like That… ending

Kristin Davis was surprised by And Just Like That… coming to an end.

Kristin Davis was shocked by the decision to end And Just Like That…

The 60-year-old actress reprised her role as Charlotte York in the Sex and the City sequel series and was shocked when it was brought to an end after three seasons last month as she “assumed” it was going to carry on.

In a preview of her appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show on Wednesday (17.09.25), Kristin said: “Our commitment that we had made was a three-year commitment to each other, so we knew that part.

“But I just assumed that we were gonna keep going. That’s how I am, you know what I mean?”

The HBO Max series had got a mixed response from viewers after first airing in 2021 but Kristin was “profoundly sad” after showrunner Michael Patrick King revealed in August that the programme would be ending.

The star – who had played the role of Charlotte since Sex and the City first aired in 1998 – wrote on Instagram: “I am profoundly sad. I love our whole beautiful cast and crew. 400 artisans working hard on our show with deep love. And to our loyal fans, we love you forever and ever.”

And Just Like That… ended after a two-part finale to the third season and King felt it was the right time to bring the show to a conclusion.

He said in a message posted on HBO Max’s social media pages: “And just like that… the ongoing storytelling of the Sex and the City universe is coming to an end. While I was writing the last episode of And Just Like That… season three, it became clear to me that this might be a wonderful place to stop.

“Along with Sarah Jessica Parker, Casey Bloys and Sarah Aubrey, we decided to end the popular series this year with a two-part finale and extended the original series order from 10 episodes to 12.

“SJP and I held off announcing the news until now because we didn’t want the word ‘final’ to overshadow the fun of watching the season. It’s with great gratitude we thank all the viewers who have let these characters into their homes and their hearts over these many years.”

Sarah Jessica Parker, who portrayed Carrie Bradshaw in the series, wrote of her sadness at bidding farewell to a role that has “dominated (her) professional heartbeat” for nearly three decades.

The 60-year-old star penned: “Carrie Bradshaw has dominated my professional heartbeat for 27 years. I think I have loved her most of all. I know others have loved her just as I have. Been frustrated, condemned and rooted for her. The symphony of all those emotions has been the greatest soundtrack and most consequential companion. Therefore the most sentimental and profound gratitude and lifetime of debt.”

Miles Davis’ Catalog Acquired by Reservoir Media

by jummy84 September 10, 2025
written by jummy84

Next year would have marked Miles Davis’ 100th birthday. In advance of the centennial, independent music rights company Reservoir Media has struck a deal with the Miles Davis estate to acquire 90 percent of Davis’ music publishing rights and the estate’s income from his catalog, according to The New York Times. Reservoir and the estate will share control of Davis’ name and likeness. Terms of the acquisition have not been made public, though the Times estimates Reservoir to have paid between $40 and $60 million.

Reservoir has also outlined plans for a celebration of Davis’ centennial in 2026. These include a previously announced biopic centered on Davis’ love affair with French singer Juliette Gréco—Mick Jagger is among the film’s producers—an international tour by the former Miles Electric Band, now known as M.E.B., and a four-night “Miles Davis Centennial Celebration” to take place at San Francisco’s SFJazz center this March.

Reservoir currently administers the publishing catalogs of Snoop Dog and Joni Mitchell, among others, as well as the rights to songs by Sheryl Crow, the Isley Brothers, Offset, and Sonny Rollins. In 2021, the company purchased hip-hop and electronic label Tommy Boy Music, which led to De La Soul’s full discography being made available on streaming for the first time. Sony Music has confirmed to Music Business Worldwide that it retains the recorded music rights to Davis’ albums released between 1955 and 1985.

“With Reservoir, there’s a real respect for Miles—his music, his style and his cultural impact. That means a lot to us” Davis’ nephew Vince Willburn Jr. shared on behalf of the estate in a press statement. “This partnership gives us the chance to elevate his legacy in new ways, and to ensure that his influence continues to inspire.”

Reservoir founder and CEO Golnar Khosrowshahi added:

Miles Davis is one of the most influential musicians of all time, and it is an incredible honor that his catalog has found a home at Reservoir. We are deeply grateful to the entire Miles Davis Estate–Cheryl, Erin, Vince, Darryl and Jeff–for entrusting us with this responsibility.” She added, “This moment is also a recognition of Reservoir’s proven commitment and capability to preserve legacies and reignite discovery of legendary artists on modern platforms, like streaming and social media. As we head into his centennial year, we look forward to showcasing Miles’ brilliance to new audiences, ensuring his music continues to be heard and celebrated worldwide.

Kristin Davis Is Still Processing the ‘And Just Like That’ Reaction

by jummy84 September 5, 2025
written by jummy84

Kristin Davis hasn’t yet made sense of the critical reaction to And Just Like That.

The Sex and the City sequel series recently signed off after three seasons (taking place after six seasons of the original series and the two movies) with Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) happy and single, and the rest of the cast left in somewhat open-ended but hopeful marriages or relationships.

“It’s been very, very weird, the whole trying to come back with this different, similar show, right? We were very clear about [how] it’s a different show [but] same characters — which I really think I was naive about how weird that was for people, for our fans,” Davis said on the most recent episode of her iHeartRadio podcast Are You a Charlotte? “It’s kind of asking a lot of fans. I guess I’m still trying to figure this out.”

While reflecting on the franchise with guest Dan Futterman, Davis said that her co-star Cynthia Nixon sent her the recent Times podcast where Taffy Brodesser-Akner shared her assessment of the series, which Davis said “really gave me hope. Like at this point, I’m looking for any understanding of what we were trying to do,” she said, quoting Brodesser-Akner as summing up And Just Like That as a “documentary of middle age.” Adding, “I feel so seen.”

Davis admitted, while getting choked up, that they knew people would have “a lot of thoughts and feelings” about Sex and the City coming back in the form of And Just Like That to catch up with the main cast a decade later, “but we didn’t really understand the depth of confusion and/or I guess struggle about us aging and trying to talk about the things that you talk about and deal with in your fifties. It’s like a lot of people have some super strong feelings about it.”

Davis is right in that season three became the talk of the town, as critics and viewers shared their hot takes (which included a “hate-watching” trend) throughout And Just Like That’s recent viral run.

Davis also shared that she didn’t know the series was ending ahead of time: “I think because I didn’t realize that we were going to end And Just Like That, so I’m still processing and, like so Pollyanna, that I thought we would just keep going.”

Writer/director/showrunner Michael Patrick King had officially announced the HBO Max hit series would be ending only two weeks before the finale aired, saying in a statement that “while I was writing the last episode of And Just Like That season three, it became clear to me that this might be a wonderful place to stop.”

He later explained to The Hollywood Reporter that he, star/executive producer Sarah Jessica Parker and HBO made the decision not to announce that it was the final season any earlier because “if you say the word ‘final’ at the beginning of a season… people wouldn’t have struggled with Carrie [Parker] and Aidan [John Corbett] the way they did. If you knew this was a final season, you wouldn’t think about fixing it. You would just say, ‘Well, that’s over,’” he said of splitting up Carrie and longtime love Aidan during season three. “So we made a decision with HBO and with everyone to not say ‘final’ because … you’re going to talk about how it ends before it even begins? This season was so active — as you see, it was very active. The word ‘final’ is like a funeral dirge on something that we wanted to be a party.”

Still, King told THR that he didn’t second guess the decision to wrap the franchise amid the buzzy response because “I believe that sometimes you take the candy away,” he said, “And I believe — in my perhaps delusion — that it will resonate correctly. Once everybody gets over the, ‘I want it to end a different way.’ Once everyone stops writing their show. Also, there’s a whole other unchatty world of the people who have watched and loved these characters for 27 years. And that’s really who we’re writing to. To make sure that Carrie’s taken care of and that they’re taking care of.”

Julie Rottenberg and Elisa Zuritsky, writers on both the original series and And Just Like That, also tried to make sense of the reaction when unpacking the end of the franchise with THR. “[Carrie] represents so much for so many people so, of course, we’re never going to please all the people all the time. I think that has been well documented!” said Rottenberg. “[But] why are people so angry? I think it comes back to the double-edged sword of these characters who have been around for decades, who are so deeply ingrained in people’s lives and imaginations and their feelings. So any choices we made, I think, become incredibly personal.”

During her podcast, Davis similarly shared her confusion when trying to understand how viewers felt and still feel about the sequel series. “People are projecting all kind of things of their own and their own expectations and or desires and or disappointments or whatever it is. They have such strong feelings. And so when I can be calm about it, I know that that’s a compliment, right,” she said, but “it can be really painful. My biggest thing is that it’s been very confusing. I’m still confused, and I do not like to be confused. I like to understand things.”

Davis said that she, Parker and Nixon will continue to be in each other’s lives, noting they went out to dinner last week. But she said it’s been challenging to follow the online conversation while she’s been “mourning” the series and in the public eye with her podcast. “Let me tell you, it was like suddenly walking into your own funeral when you didn’t know it was coming. I mean, it was like we died. At a certain point, I had to be like, ‘OK… I got to put my phone down. I cannot look at Instagram,’” she shared. “Young selves and the odes, you know, they’re lovely odes to the death of our characters, but they didn’t die. And I’m here and I’m fine, I’m good, you know what I mean.”

Warwick Davis Returns to ‘Harry Potter’ in New HBO TV Series

HBO‘s upcoming Harry Potter TV series has cast a familiar face to play Hogwarts Professor Filius Flitwick.

Warwick Davis, who played Flitwick in the original Harry Potter film series, will reprise the role for the TV series, which will debut on HBO and HBO Max in 2027.

Davis is the only actor (so far) to play the same role on the TV reboot as in the original films. His return to the franchise was announced as part of the annual Back to Hogwarts event, which is held each Sept. 1 and celebrates the franchise.

In addition to Davis, HBO also announced castings for seven other roles in the upcoming series:

  • Hogwarts students: Elijah Oshin as Dean Thomas, Finn Stephens as Vincent Crabbe and William Nash as Gregory Goyle
  • Hogwarts staff: Sirine Saba as Professor Pomona Sprout, Richard Durden as Professor Cuthbert Binns, and Bríd Brennan as Madam Poppy Pomfrey
  • Gringotts: Leigh Gill as Griphook

HBO has been active in casting the show over the summer, starting with the new actors playing Harry, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, with John Lithgow playing Dumbledore, Janet McTeer playing Professor Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu playing Professor Severus Snape and Nick Frost playing Hagrid, among other roles.

You can see the full cast list so far here.

The new Harry Potter series is in production now and will take a more expansive approach to author J.K. Rowling’s original book series, delving into storylines that weren’t able to be included in the films. While the cast is new, the inclusion of Davis as the Hogwarts charms professor provides some connective tissue between the original film franchise and the upcoming series.

Davis also portrayed Griphook in the film franchise but is not returning for the role in the TV series. The actor has also appeared in the Star Wars and Leprechaun franchises as well as the title character in Willow.

The series is being written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner. Mark Mylod will executive produce and direct multiple episodes of the series for HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television. The series is executive produced by Rowling, Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films.

Warwick Davis to Reprise Filius Flitwick in HBO’s Harry Potter TV Reboot

Original Harry Potter director Chris Columbus may not see the point of HBO’s upcoming reboot series, but cast member Warwick Davis appears to disagree. Davis, who portrayed Professor Filius Flitwick in all eight films, is set to reprise the role in the new TV series, which is currently in production and scheduled to debut in 2027.

Davis is the first principal member from the films confirmed to appear in HBO’s TV reboot. He joins a cast that includes Dominic McLaughlin in the titular role, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger,  John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.

Warwick Davis to reprise one of his ‘Harry Potter’ roles in HBO reboot series

Warwick Davis has been confirmed as part of the cast for the Harry Potter television series, reprising one of the same roles he had in the films.

Davis has been revealed as the first actor from the original film franchise – based on the J.K. Rowling book series – to be taking part in the forthcoming series made for HBO.

In the show, which is expected to arrive on screens in 2027, Davis will once again be taking on the role of Professor Filius Flitwick. In the films, he also played the character Griphook – a goblin employed at the Gringotts Wizarding Bank – however, this role in the series will be played by Leigh Gill.

The news was announced as part of the Back To Hogwarts celebration today (September 1), and also saw other new members of the cast revealed for the first time.

These, as shared by Deadline, included the role of Dean Thomas, a student at Hogwarts who was part of the Gryffindor House, and those of Slytherin students Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle. Thomas will be played by Elijah Oshin, and Crabbe and Goyle will be played by Finn Stephens and William Nash, respectively.

Also confirmed is Sirine Saba as Professor Pomona Sprout (played by Miriam Margolyes in the films), Richard Durden as Professor Cuthbert Binns, and Bríd Brennan as Madam Poppy Pomfrey. Binns is the ghost of a teacher who continues to teach at Hogwarts, and featured in the J.K. Rowling books but not in the film series. Pomfrey is a nurse who was played by Gemma Jones in the movies.

Earlier this year, other members of the cast were revealed, and it was reported that over 32,000 children auditioned for the three lead roles – Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley.

In May, it was confirmed that Dominic McLaughlin would be playing Harry, Arabella Stanton will portray Hermione, and Alastair Stout will take on the role of Ron.

Before then, it was reported that John Lithgow would play the role of Albus Dumbledore. HBO later confirmed the casting, and also announced Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.

Others in the cast include Luke Thallon as Professor Quirinus Quirrell, Paul Whitehouse as caretaker Argus Filch, Bertie Carvel as Cornelius Fudge, Harry’s aunt and uncle Petunia and Vernon Dursley depicted by Bel Powley and Daniel Rigby, Draco Malfoy being played by Lox Pratt, and his father, Lucius, brought to life by Johnny Flynn. Check out the full cast so far here.

Since the series was announced, an actor from the original films, Jason Isaacs, has called out “racist” critics of Paapa Essiedu’s casting as Severus Snape in the show, and Chris Columbus, who directed the first two films, has criticised the look of the series, questioning why it needs to be made.
