“So, after being in a relationship for six years, I spent the next two years like a man who had been in a relationship for six years. … I went on this hiatus, like I was cold turkey — like not dating, not relationships, mostly not sex,” Malcolm-Jamal recalled. “So, I was in this space, and I met my wife through a mutual friend. Days after Malcolm-Jamal’s death, early reports claimed he had died trying to save his daughter from drowning while on a family vacation in Costa Rica. Elberth León, head of the Tourist Police for Costa Rica’s Atlantic region, initially told Us Weekly that both Malcolm-Jamal and his daughter had been dragged by the ocean current, and while nearby witnesses were able to rescue his daughter, they couldn’t reach him in time. However, PEOPLE and other outlets later clarified that his daughter was not actually in the water during the incident.
“Mr. Warner was playing with his daughter at the seashore at one point. He then left her out of the water, and he and a friend of his entered the sea,” a statement from Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ), translated from Spanish to English, said.
