Avatar: Fire and Ash first reactions are in as critics single out “unimaginable” and “bold” sequel filmmaking

The first wave of reactions have arrived for Avatar: Fire and Ash ahead of the release of the third entry in James Cameron’s epic sci-fi franchise later this month – and early signs suggest the new film could be another winner.

Although full reviews for the film are still under embargo for the time being, critics have begun posting their takes on social media, and the vast majority have been very positive so far.

“Three films in and I still can’t get over how magical the [Avatar] movies are,” wrote Perri Nemiroff of Collider, adding that Fire and Ash “truly feels like a ride.”

She continued: “I couldn’t believe how quickly I was pulled back into the world of Pandora and swept up in the situation. And once that happens, there’s a noticeable increase in complexity in quite a few aspects of the production.”

Critic Courtney Howard called the film “a glorious saga” and added: “Bold, brilliant & awesome in every way, this is what movie theatres were built for,” while writer Michael Lee claimed that it “pushes technical boundaries in unimaginable ways”.

Chris Killian of ComicBook.com wrote that the film was a “damn good James Cameron movie!” and continued: “What else do you need to know? Go see it in 3-D in the best theatre you can find because it’ll blow your mind. That’s what JC does. Every bit as gorgeous as you’d expect, Fire and Ash is also easily the most INTENSE Avatar movie yet.”

Some viewers noted that the film would work best as a double bill with previous entry The Way of the Water, suggesting that it might be best to rewatch that one before going to see the new film.

“It feels like a Part 2 of that story,” wrote YouTuber Adam Hlaváč. “I was blown away by the visuals, the score, and many performances. But goddammit, you gotta see this thing in Dolby 3D! It’s unreal how immersive it is.”

Jesse Hassenger added that it was: “The first James Cameron sequel that feels kinda like a regular follow-up rather than an innovative re-envisioning of its predecessor’s world,” but added that “it also just casually drops ~3-4 of the best/coolest action sequences of the year and I was rapt the whole time.”

While most of the reactions skewed very positive, a couple of them did also come with one or two reservations. For example, Eric Goldman wrote that while it was “another visually fantastic epic” and that “Cameron delivers spectacle like no one else”, he had “some issues with the third act and Way of Water remains the peak”.

Meanwhile, Matt Neglia of Next Best Picture wrote that while it “delivers the most emotional moments of the franchise” and is “the most epic in both scope and runtime”, the film contained “a few questionable choices” and was at times “frustrating”.

The reactions were pretty much unanimous in their praise for the visuals, but there were some critics who seemed otherwise unimpressed, with Variety’s Clayton Davis calling it the “most bloated entry yet”.

He added: “The dialogue often makes you cringe, and the story essentially devolves into an episode of My Two Dads meets James Cameron’s take on A Pyromaniac’s Love Story.”

Kaitlyn Booth also wrote that “story-wise, it’s the same ‘capture/rescue’ plot over and over again with some laughable dialogue thrown in the middle” adding that “the runtime is criminal, and if you have eye issues, avoid the 3D”.

The film arrives in UK cinemas on Friday 19th December, with Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Stephen Lang, Sigourney Weaver and Kate Winslet among the stars to reprise their roles from previous instalments and, Oona Chaplin, Edie Falco, and David Thewlis joining the cast.

The official synopsis teased: “A year after settling in with the Metkayina clan, Jake and Neytiri’s family grapples with grief after Neteyam’s death.

“They encounter a new, aggressive Na’vi tribe, the Mangkwan clan, also called the Ash People, led by the fiery tribe leader, Varang, who has allied with Jake’s enemy, Quaritch, as the conflict on Pandora escalates to devastating consequences.”

Avatar: Fire and Ash will debut in cinemas on Friday 19th December 2025 in the UK.

written by jummy84

Yes, folks, we’re not even to Thanksgiving, and awards season is already in full swing. Currently in the spotlight: the year’s best documentaries, care of this year’s Critics Choice Documentary Awards, which took place on Sunday, November 9, 2025 at The Edison Ballroom in Manhattan. Geeta Gandbhir’s lauded feature “The Perfect Neighbor” was the evening’s big winner, walking away with not just a Best Documentary Feature win and a Best Director win for Gandbhir, but also Best Editing for Viridiana Lieberman, Best Archival Documentary, and Best True Crime Documentary.

Hosted by award-winning actor, writer, and producer Aasif Mandvi, the annual event hosted a variety of leading filmmakers, industry professionals, and special guests for an evening celebrating excellence in documentary filmmaking. Other big winners included “Mr. Scorsese,” “Ocean with David Attenborough,” and “Orwell: 2+2=5,” which each won two awards.

"Little Amélie or the Character of Rain"

The evening also honored legendary documentarian Ken Burns, who received the Critics Choice Impact Award, which was presented by acclaimed actor Christine Baranski; and visionary “Folktales” filmmakers Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady, who received the CCA’s Pennebaker Award (formerly the Critics Choice Lifetime Achievement Award), presented to them by Pennebaker’s widow and collaborator, Chris Hegedus.

“Ten years in, and the art of documentary storytelling has never been more vital or vibrant,” said Christopher Campbell, Vice President of Documentary at the Critics Choice Association in an official statement. “This year’s filmmakers show, through their creativity and courage, just how powerful documentaries can be in shaping our view of the world.”

The Critics Choice Documentary Awards honors the year’s finest achievements in documentaries released in theaters, on TV, and on major digital platforms, as determined by the voting of qualified CCA members (at IndieWire, that includes yours truly, David Ehrlich, Anne Thompson, and Marcus Jones). Nominations were determined by the voting of qualified CCA members with expertise in the documentary field. The 10th annual awards ceremony was produced by Bob Bain of Bob Bain Productions and Joey Berlin of Berlin Entertainment.

Pusha T & No Malice Address Critics Who Claim They’re Using Kanye & Travis Scott Feuds to Promote Clipse’s Comeback

Pusha T and No Malice are responding to backlash over their recent interviews — including those where Pusha made pointed remarks about Kanye West and Travis Scott — and accusations that the brothers are using controversy to promote their reunion album Let God Sort ’Em Out. When asked, during a GQ interview, if their comments about former collaborators were part of a marketing tactic, No Malice pushed back. “Yeah, but look who’s saying that,” he replied. “Because on the other end of that spectrum, there are people who really see clearly that Pusha don’t lean on that kind of stuff. And look how long he sat on what has been going on. But that’s what they do on the other side. So they think that we play that over here, but nah, we don’t. And we don’t snitch and we don’t tell. Standing on it. Say what I had to say, and that’s it.” Pusha T doubled down, saying he refuses to sugarcoat the truth or “tiptoe around” real issues. “You can’t let the journalism be a main focus of the rollout and you tiptoe around sht,” he said. “I wasn’t going to come in and give you scenarios, and be tiptoeing around the stories. I’ll take the criticism, it’s fine. But never call me a liar. Because I never lie. I never lie. Lemme tell you something: I think lying’s for btches. If you lie about sh*t, that’s because you’re scared of something, and I’m not scared of anything or anybody. So what I say is what I say.”

The Clipse duo made it clear that, despite speculation, their focus remains on authenticity — not controversy. “We’re standing on what we say,” No Malice emphasized, dismissing the idea that honesty about the past equates to provocation.

“Whenever it’s over, it’s over,” she noted. “But in the meantime, you are doing it.”

What Did Critics Think of ‘Hocus Pocus’ When It Was First Released? Read the 1993 Reviews

For many Disney fans, a viewing of 1993’s Hocus Pocus is an annual Halloween tradition. The fantasy comedy film — starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy as the villainous Sanderson family of witches — has become a staple of October TV programming. But when it hit theaters in 1993, it fared poorly at the box office and even worse in the court of critical opinion.

Kathy Bates has defiant response to critics claiming weight loss is all down to Ozempic

11 September 2025

Kathy Bates has fired back at critics claiming her weight loss was all down to Ozempic.

Kathy Bates has reflected on her weight loss

The 77-year-old actress – who has lost around 100lbs since being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 2017 – insisted while she eventually turned to the weight loss drug, she put in years of effort to get to where she wants to be.

She told Variety: “People say, ‘Well, it was the Ozempic.’ F*** you, it was the Ozempic! It took me years to do this.

“I got this diagnosis about diabetes — my father died of it; his mother died of it; one of my sisters is in peril.

“When they said ’diabetes,’ I figured out what to do to slowly, over years, to lose the weight.

“And then when Ozempic came along, I was able to lose the last 15 to 20 pounds and keep it off.”

The Matlock star – who is healthy after battling ovarian cancer in 2003 and breast cancer in 2012 – explained that she “finally” feels like herself.

She added: “I finally feel like I’m who I am. I’ve fought my way through the rapids. I feel this is the best time of my life. I’m glad I stuck around for it!”

However, the aftermath of her weightless can still be overwhelming as she tries to get used to her new figure and lifestyle.

She said: “[My stylist] had a beautiful dress for me to try. I looked at it on the hanger, and I thought, ‘That’s not gonna fit.’

“I put it on, and it fit, and I just melted down. I just started crying and crying. I’m still figuring out what it’s like to be without all of that weight.

“What was it for? What was I hiding myself from? What are the emotions that are pouring out because I don’t have that armor? It just really surprised me, really shocked me.”

‘Wake Up Dead Man’ Reviews: What Are Critics Saying?

by jummy84 September 7, 2025
written by jummy84

Rian Johnson‘s hotly anticipated Knives Out threequel Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery had its world premiere in the Special Presentations section of the Toronto Film Festival, and the entertainment world’s film critics are already praising it as a successful entry into the whodunit franchise canon.

Reviewers laud the murder-mystery’s Gothic elements, contrasting the Netflix movie’s more somber tone with Glass Onion‘s distinctly campy vibe.

Deadline’s Damon Wise noted that fans should not be alarmed at the switch in genre, as Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc and a new all-star cast of characters keeps the project entertaining: “Don’t take that to mean that all the fun’s been sucked out, though; far from it. As one character put is, ‘There’s obviously some Scooby-Doo sh*t going on round here.’ And wouldn’t you just know it, there damn well is.”

IndieWire’s Kate Erbland said: “It works, and it’s no big mystery why — Johnson knows his form and format, and delivers on it, playing with tone and message but never losing sight of why these stories are so damn entertaining to watch and unravel.”

TheWrap‘s Chase Hutchinson also highlighted the depth of star Josh O’Connor’s performance: “Not only does the franchise newcomer give an excellent comedic performance, the ‘Challengers’ and ‘God’s Own Country’ actor also brings a genuine amount of grace to a film that ends up becoming precisely about that. It’s Johnson’s most elaborate murder mystery movie yet, but also his most emotional.”

Wake Up Dead Man, set for a limited theatrical run Nov. 26 and coming to Netflix Dec. 12, also stars Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, Cailee Spaeny, Daryl McCormack and Thomas Haden Church.

It’s been a rough few days for Young Thug.

Following a wave of leaked jail phone calls targeting artists like Gunna and Kendrick Lamar, Thugger hit Twitter with a pointed tweet:

“Bashing me only goin f**k that rap community up more, I’m the blue to this fake a** game.”

TJB Crew, is Thug really the glue or as he calls it, the “blue” that holds hip-hop together?

Bella Ramsey tells ‘The Last Of Us’ critics not to watch season three

by jummy84 August 29, 2025
written by jummy84

The Last Of Us star Bella Ramsey has cautioned critics of the hit HBO series not to watch season three – see what they had to say below.

  • READ MORE: ‘The Last Of Us’ season two review: heartbreakingly brilliant apocalypse drama

The first season of HBO’s The Last Of Us adapted the plot of the hit video game, while the second season began to tell the story of The Last Of Us Part II. In the series, Ramsey – who is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns – portrays Ellie, while Pedro Pascal plays Joel Miller.

The second season of The Last Of Us may have inspired millions to try out the video game series but viewership of the finale was down 56 per cent compared to season one. There was also tension between long-term fans of the game and newcomers to the series. However, the hit show has been nominated for 16 awards at the 2025 Emmys.

Several points of contention among critics have been aimed at Ramsey since the show’s debut, some of which point at their acting chops, while others have slammed the show’s casting, arguing that Ramsey looks nothing like the character they’re based on.

The Last Of Us co-creator Neil Druckmann also said they weren’t bothered about casting actors who looked exactly like their game counterparts. “It’s just different priorities and how you approach it,” Druckmann explained. “We need people to really capture the essence of those characters and we value performance over anything else.”

In a recent appearance on The Awardist podcast (via The Hollywood Reporter), Ramsey addressed the hate ad admitted that they try their best to “steer clear” of the show’s “louder critics”: “There’s nothing I can do about it anyway. The show is out. There’s nothing that can be changed or altered. So I’m like, there’s not really any point in reading or looking at anything.”

“People are of course entitled to their opinions. But it doesn’t affect the show, it doesn’t affect how the show continues or anything in any way. They’re very separate things to me. So no, I just don’t really engage.”

Ramsey went on to tell the show’s critics that they aren’t being forced to watch season three: “You don’t have to watch it. If you hate it that much, the game exists. You can just play the game again,” they said. “If you do want to watch it, hope you enjoy it.”

Season three will include Ramsey’s character Ellie, but will primarily focus on Kaitlyn Dever’s Abby – the antagonist of season two – and her retelling of the events that transpired in season two.

In July, it was announced that The Last Of Us co-creator Neil Druckmann would be stepping away as co-showrunner on the HBO adaptation to focus on making more games. Fellow Naughty Dog employee Halley Gross (who worked as a writer and producer on the TV show) also confirmed she’d be leaving the project. It means Mazin will have total creative control over the future of The Last Of Us.

Season two of The Last Of Us scored a four-star review from NME, with Nick Levine writing: “At its best, The Last Of Us is unsettling enough to make you question your own hypothetical moral code. When every day is about survival and making sense of post-apocalyptic chaos, does taking a life become easier, or somehow even harder? This show doesn’t just go deep narratively – it also cuts deep emotionally.”

What The Critics Are Saying

What The Critics Are Saying

by jummy84 August 27, 2025
written by jummy84

Paolo Sorrentino‘s latest feature, La Grazia, is opening the Venice Film Festival this evening.

Toni Servillo and Anna Ferzetti star in the drama about an Italian president in the final six months of his last term who faces some deep moral decisions including two potential pardons and the question of signing a bill legalizing euthanasia.

La Grazia, written and directed by Sorrentino, re-teams him with longtime muse Servillo who also starred in the filmmaker’s Oscar-winner, The Great Beauty.

So far, there’s largely high praise for La Grazia, which is running in competition. Here are some early reactions:

In his review, Deadline’s Pete Hammond wrote, “Clearly the current political winds in both Italy and America have got this masterful filmmaker again thinking about the government and what it means to be a moral leader.”

Praising star Servillo, Hammond pointed out that the actor has never been nominated for an Oscar, but “he should be for this.” Summing up La Grazia, Hammond commented, “Sorrentino has made some beauties in his career. This is one of his best.”

The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw gushed that Sorrentino “has rediscovered his voice, his wan humour and his flair for the surreal and sensational set piece; this wintry, elegant movie is a welcome reassertion of his natural style after the facile and weirdly humourless affectations of his previous, very disappointing film Parthenope.”

Continued Bradshaw, “Maybe this film, concluding as it does on a distinctive note of euphoric sentimentality, does not add up to quite as much as the director thinks; but it intrigues, it exhilarates and it shows that Sorrentino is Italian cinema’s heir to Antonioni.”

For The Playlist, which gave La Grazia a B, the film is “a compelling watch” that “embodies much of the Sorrentino appeal, even if it registers in more of a minor key for the Italian auteur. The film is playful when it wants to be and pensive when it needs to be.”

The Film Stage cited “Sorrentino’s trademark visual flair,” opining that “fans of The Great Beauty will likely enjoy this artfully rendered, contemplative, if not truly incisive drama.”

The Film Stage added, “Narrative shortcomings notwithstanding, La Grazia is never a chore to sit through. Lensed by Daria D’Antonio, it boasts lush, lyrical images that hug your eyeballs like a blanket.”

IndieWire went in the opposite direction, calling La Grazia “uncharacteristically sedate and sexless” and “a deliberate curveball from modern Italian cinema’s most unbridled maximalist“ that “feels like forced Catholic penance for the Neapolitan flesh parade of last year’s poorly received Parthenope.”

Italian film magazine Ciak commented that, “Above all,” Servillo “shines, stratospherically bringing life and soul to a character who seems to have lost his life and soul to regrets about the past, a life never fully lived.”

La Grazia is a Fremantle movie produced by The Apartment, Numero 10, and PiperFilm, which will distribute in Italy. Mubi owns worldwide rights, excluding Italy. The Match Factory is handling international sales.

Born in Naples in 1970, Sorrentino’s credits include The Consequences of Love and The Family Friend, which both competed for the Palme d’Or in Cannes in 2004 and 2006 respectively, while his film Il Divo won the Jury Prize in 2008. He returned In Competition at Cannes in 2011 with This Must Be the Place and two years later with The Great Beauty, which won an Academy Award, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA award for Best Foreign Language Film as well as three European Film Awards. His last feature Parthenope debuted at Cannes in 2024.
