Anubhav Sinha Criticizes Bollywood’s Obsession with “Fake” Box Office Numbers

by jummy84 October 17, 2025
written by jummy84

Filmmaker Anubhav Sinha has voiced strong criticism regarding the entertainment industry’s excessive focus on the business and box office performance of films, arguing that this obsession distracts from the actual purpose of cinema: the audience experience.

Sinha claims that the financial metrics being discussed are often unreliable and misleading. “The numbers are about what budget films are made on and the business they do. Dono ankdey jhoote hain! (Both figures are fake!),” the director stated emphatically.

He explained that while people in the industry generally avoid discussing this convoluted truth, “a lot of it isn’t true.”

Sinha believes that the audience should be entirely removed from financial discussions, which he feels are irrelevant to their role as consumers.

“Honestly, that is not the audience’s business; it should be whether they liked the movie or not,” he asserted. He drew a compelling analogy to consumer goods: “Do we ask a biscuit company about their ROI (return on investment) before consuming it?”

The director suggested that the public, and by extension the media, enjoys talking about failure too much. “We are discussing too much, and people talk and enjoy discussing failures. As humans, we like celebrating ruins and talking about them.” He stressed that while a film may be broadly labelled “bad,” the individual who saw it may have genuinely enjoyed it.

Facing Industry Challenges and Finding the Audience Gap

Sinha, who recently wrapped up a courtroom drama starring Taapsee Pannu, admitted that the film industry presents significant, even devastating, challenges for creators.

He confessed to facing a major professional hurdle after his 2011 film Ra.One underperformed commercially. “Logon ke ghar bik jaate hain (People lose their homes). Today, people call Ra.One a cult film, but it did not do well. After that I had a very tough three or four years with no work,” the 60-year-old filmmaker revealed.

Feeling the need to “reinvent and update” himself, Anubhav Sinha embarked on a journey he called “Chal Picture Chalein,” travelling across cities including Lucknow, Delhi, and Jaipur.

His travels highlighted a significant disconnect between filmmakers and their audience. He concluded that the audience is not boycotting theatres altogether, but they are highly selective. “The audience is willing to go to theatres, but they’re particular about what they choose to watch. If they feel a film is worth spending money and time on, they do watch it,” he observed.

Anubhav Sinha attributes this gap to the geographical reality of many in the film industry. “Most makers are immigrants in Mumbai, uprooted from our hometowns,” he shared. He argues that by living in this “bubble,” filmmakers are failing to witness and understand the changing tastes and evolving expectations of audiences in other parts of the country. His travels were an attempt to bridge this critical gap and reconnect with the real pulse of the nation’s movie-goers.

Dave Chappelle Criticizes US at Saudi Arabia Comedy Festival

by jummy84 October 3, 2025
written by jummy84

During his set at the controversial Riyadh Comedy Festival in Saudi Arabia, Dave Chappelle shared his thoughts on the current state of free speech in the United States, saying that “it’s easier to talk here than it is in America.”

“Right now, in America, they say that if you talk about Charlie Kirk, that you’ll get cancelled,” Chappelle said to an audience of 6,000, according to The New York Times. “I don’t know if that’s true, but I’m gonna find out… they’re going to do something to me so that I can’t say what I want to say.”

While far from charging journalists with high treason over social media posts, Chappelle’s comments touch on fears of a free speech crisis stateside. The national debate on censorship and retaliatory government actions gained newfound attention after Paramount’s sudden cancellation of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and ABC temporarily pulling Jimmy Kimmel Live! for his comments regarding the assassination of Charlie Kirk.

Related Video

Donald Trump and FCC chairman Brendan Carr subsequently doubled down on their threats to limit certain types of speech. The resulting uncertainty sparked quite a bit of outrage, an open letter signed by over 400 actors and musicians, a pointed South Park episode, and plenty of charged discourse.

Chappelle’s ideas may echo worries held by many others in the public sphere, but the setting in which he expressed them ultimately resulted in an ironic dissonance.

While Chappelle made the comments in the midst of a stand-up comedy set, critics have pointed out the irony of the sentiment. Saudi Arabia has a reputation for human rights abuses and often restricts speech within its borders. Media outlets are licensed by the government, and several journalists and Saudi Arabian citizens have faced harsh consequences for criticizing the regime or sharing ideas contrary to the state’s principles. Notable instances include Salma al-Shehab, a student who was initially sentenced to 34 years in prison after retweeting women’s rights activists on Twitter, and Jamal Khashoggi, a journalist who was brutally assassinated in 2018. Just this past June, the Saudi state executed journalist Turki al-Jasser for running a Twitter account that accused the Saudi royal family of human rights abuses and corruption.

Because of such occurrences, many of the comedians performing at the Riyadh Comedy Festival faced public backlash for taking part in the event. Additionally, the nonprofit watchdog group Human Rights Watch urged those participating to call for the release of detained Saudi activists, including Waleed Abu al-Khair and Manahel al-Otaibi.

Comics who attended the festival — including Bill Burr, Louis C.K., Aziz Ansari, Pete Davidson, and others — were reportedly paid extremely handsomely. Some publicly defended their involvement, with Burr saying that the people there are “just like us” on a recent episode of his podcast.

ASAP Rocky Criticizes Drake For UMG Lawsuit Over “Not Like Us”

A$AP Rocky is weighing in on the latest development in the ongoing fallout between Drake and Kendrick Lamar, particularly Drake’s surprising legal maneuver against Universal Music Group over Lamar’s chart-topping diss track, “Not Like Us.”

The Harlem rapper, whose cover story in ELLE was published Tuesday (Sept. 23), reflected on the lyrical clash that dominated spring 2024, producing standout tracks like Kendrick’s “Euphoria” and Drake’s fiery rebuttal “Family Matters,” which included digs at Rocky himself.

Still, Rocky chose not to jump into the fray.

“It was healthy for Hip-Hop,” A$AP said of the rivalry, noting that the duel reinvigorated rap’s competitive spirit. “The battle was between Kendrick and Drake, not Drake and everybody else who might have said something at that time. And that’s mainly why I fell back.”

But Rocky admitted his respect for the battle soured once Drake chose to take legal action over “Not Like Us,” a diss that went from a viral anthem to a cultural juggernaut, dominating charts and airwaves.

“I just hate the way it’s turning out with [Drake] suing and all that,” Rocky said. “What part of the game is that? What type of sh*t is that? That’s none of my business, I guess.”

Rocky’s critique carries an added weight considering his complicated history with Drake. Once collaborators and tourmates, their relationship has since fractured, reportedly accelerated by Rocky’s romance with Rihanna.

Drake and Rihanna’s on-again-off-again relationship had long been a fixture in pop culture, punctuated by musical hits like “Work” and “What’s My Name.”

But by 2018, Rihanna told Vogue that the two no longer maintained a friendship, citing the fallout from Drake’s public profession of love at the 2016 MTV VMAs.

“Waiting through that speech was probably the most uncomfortable part. I don’t like too many compliments; I don’t like to be put on blast,” she said at the time. “We don’t have a friendship now, but we’re not enemies either. It is what it is.”

Now, Rocky and Rihanna are partners and parents to two children, RZA and Riot, with hopes for more in the near future. RiRi is currently pregnant with their third.

Stephen A. Smith Criticizes Jimmy Kimmel Over Charlie Kirk Joke

Stephen A. Smith Criticizes Jimmy Kimmel Over Charlie Kirk Joke

by jummy84 September 22, 2025
written by jummy84

Stephen A. Smith had smoke for Jimmy Kimmel on Thursday’s (Sept. 18) episode of his SiriusXM show Straight Shooter. The ESPN commentator weighed in on Kimmel’s recent remarks about conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s assassination, and he wasn’t impressed.

“The only thing that I would say as it pertains to Jimmy Kimmel is, where was the joke?” Smith said with a straight face. “Because you’re a late night host, and obviously that has a comedic attachment to it. Where was the joke? Obviously, it wasn’t anything funny about that.”

Kimmel, who usually mixes political jabs into his monologues, addressed Kirk’s Sept. 10 killing during Monday’s (Sept. 15) episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!. The activist was fatally shot while speaking with students at Utah Valley University. Authorities later arrested 22-year-old Tyler Robinson in connection to the shooting.

On air, Kimmel suggested that Trump supporters were trying to twist the tragedy for political gain. “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it,” he said.

In consequence, ABC announced Wednesday (Sept. 17) that it would indefinitely suspend Jimmy Kimmel Live! following the backlash, and Nexstar confirmed it would be pulling the show from its ABC affiliates. Kimmel himself has yet to publicly comment on his suspension.

Smith, who actually guest-hosted Kimmel’s show in 2021, took a stern approach reminding media figures that words can carry weight. “In the times we’re living in, you have to be very, very careful about what you say when you open your mouth,” he warned. “And you can’t associate a political group of people with a murderer.”

He also called out former President Donald Trump, who celebrated Kimmel’s suspension on Truth Social. “That goes for both sides,” Smith stressed. “President Trump shouldn’t be coming out of his mouth talking about how … ‘this was instigated and stirred on by the Left.’”

Take a look below at Straight Shooter, where Stephen A. Smith goes off about Jimmy Kimmel’s remarks.

Bollywood veteran actor Jackie Shroff, fondly known as Jaggu Dada, is well known for his social initiatives. Along with supporting various charitable causes, he often urges people to plant trees and care for the environment. Recently, he shared a powerful video highlighting a different social concern, the chaos of Mumbai’s traffic. In the clip, Jackie expressed anger after witnessing an ambulance stuck in a heavy jam, fearing that the patient inside might lose their life due to the delay.

The actor posted the video on his Instagram handle, capturing the tense situation. From inside his car, he can be heard saying in frustration, “He will die on the way. Roads should be made properly, and people should understand. But where is their brain?” Jackie criticized the drivers blocking the ambulance, urging them to give way and recognize that it was a matter of someone’s life and death. His emotional reaction struck a chord with many viewers.

Netizens quickly began reacting to the clip. One user suggested, “Dada, please make a video on the quality of the roads too. The potholes themselves cause half the traffic jams.” Another commented, “Wow Dada, well said,” while several others tagged Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, urging Jackie to raise the issue of road construction with him. Some praised the actor for using his platform to highlight such a serious problem that affects countless lives every day.

On the professional front, Jackie Shroff was last seen in a cameo role in the film Tanvi the Great. Up next, he will appear in Kartik Aaryan and Ananya Panday’s upcoming movie Tu Meri Main Tera, Main Tera Tu Meri, produced by Karan Johar and slated for a December 31, 2025, theatrical release. He is also part of the star-studded cast of Welcome to the Jungle, alongside Akshay Kumar. Even as he continues to work in films, Jackie remains committed to social causes, using his voice to call attention to pressing issues like traffic mismanagement and public safety.

Stephen A. Smith Criticizes Celebrating Charlie Kirk’s Assassination

by jummy84 September 13, 2025
written by jummy84

Stephen A. Smith used his platform on Thursday (Sep. 11) to call out those celebrating the recent assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.

On his podcast, the ESPN commentator delivered a passionate response to the online reaction following Kirk’s killing at Utah Valley University. “I don’t care what his political beliefs were. I don’t care what he felt,” Smith said. “He’s dead at the age of 31. That his wife is a widow. That his children are fatherless because his ideas and his beliefs differed from somebody else, apparently.”

Smith went further, criticizing the celebratory posts he saw online. “And then I’m going online, and I’m seeing people celebrating it! Shame! Shame on you!” he added. However, he also commended the New York Yankees for pausing Wednesday night’s game against the Detroit Tigers to honor Kirk with a moment of silence and an image on the jumbotron.

“Props to the New York Yankees organization last night for having a moment of silence,” Smith continued. “We’re not supposed to condone stuff like this. We’re not supposed to say it’s OK. I don’t give a damn who you are, Black, White or anything in between! I hope the FBI and law enforcement catch this individual and do what needs to be done with him.”

Reactions to Kirk’s death included Team USA BMX rider Chelsea Wolfe, who faced scrutiny after posting celebratory messages on Instagram. MSNBC dismissed political analyst Matthew Dowd for suggesting Kirk’s rhetoric led to his death, and the Carolina Panthers fired communications staffer Charlie Rock for social media posts downplaying the tragedy.

Kirk was fatally shot by a lone gunman on Wednesday (Sep. 10), as he addressed students at Utah Valley University.

Tyler Robinson, 22, was arrested in St. George, Utah, on Friday (Sep. 12), according to officials and sources who spoke with ABC News. His capture came after investigators circulated photos of the suspect, which Robinson’s father recognized. At a Friday morning press conference, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox confirmed the arrest with the words, “Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. We got him.”

Facebook screenshot

Cox explained that Robinson’s father confronted his son after realizing he matched the images released by police. Though Robinson initially refused to surrender, he eventually agreed. His father then reached out to a youth pastor who also serves as a U.S. Marshals task force officer, who coordinated with the FBI to ensure Robinson stayed put until authorities arrived.

He also publicly thanked Robinson’s family “for doing the right thing.” He also detailed surveillance footage showing Robinson arriving on campus on Wednesday at 8:29 A.M. in a gray Dodge Challenger. At the time, Robinson wore a maroon T-shirt, light shorts, light shoes, and a black hat with a white logo. Investigators say he later changed into dark clothing before the shooting, then switched back to his original outfit afterward.

Authorities also revealed bizarre engravings on unfired shell casings recovered at the scene. One read, “Hey fascist! CATCH!” accompanied by arrows pointing in multiple directions. Another contained lyrics from the Italian World War II resistance song “Bella Ciao.” A third read, “If you read this, you are GAY Lmao.”

He continues: “Put somebody on! It’s okay to run your few hundred M’s up, but who’d you help, though?”

Thug then adds: “You supposed to be a n***a who blessing n****s. That’s why these n****s will never be bigger than #Drake, EVER in life. …Kendrick gotd*mn, put a n**** on….you ain’t go bless nobody?”

Snoop Dogg Criticizes LGBTQ+ Representation In Children’s Films After ‘Lightyear’ Experience | Glamsham.com

by jummy84 August 26, 2025
written by jummy84

Snoop Dogg’s Remarks on Lightyear:

Appearing on the It’s Giving podcast, the 53-year-old artist described his shock at discovering a same-sex couple featured in the 2022 animated film. The movie includes a montage where space ranger Alisha Hawthorne (voiced by Uzo Aduba) marries her partner Kiko and raises a child together.

“They’re like, ‘She had a baby, with another woman,’” Snoop recalled. “My grandson in the middle of the movie is like, ‘Papa Snoop? How does she have a baby with a woman? She’s a woman!’ It f’ me up. I didn’t come in for this. I just came to watch the goddamn movie.”

The rapper admitted he struggled to answer his grandson’s questions and suggested that children may be too young to process such storylines. “These are kids. We have to show that at this age? They’re going to ask questions. I don’t have the answer,” he added.

The Controversy Surrounding Lightyear:

Before its release, Lightyear was already at the center of debate. The film, which tells the backstory of the Toy Story spaceman Buzz Lightyear (voiced by Chris Evans), included Disney’s first prominent LGBTQ+ character and the studio’s first on-screen same-sex kiss. The moment was initially cut but reinstated after a backlash from Pixar employees who argued it was essential representation.

Despite the push for inclusivity, the kiss sparked bans in several countries and remains one of Disney’s most polarizing creative decisions.

Backlash to Snoop Dogg’s Comments:

Snoop’s statements have drawn criticism, with many calling them outdated and insensitive. Some activists and fans are urging event organizers to reconsider his role as a headline performer at the upcoming Australian Football League’s Grand Final.

This isn’t the first time the rapper has faced scrutiny for his stance on LGBTQ+ issues. In 2015, he referred to Caitlyn Jenner as a “science project,” and in 2014, he used an anti-gay slur in a now-deleted Instagram post.

A Larger Debate in Hollywood:

Snoop Dogg’s comments highlight the ongoing tension around LGBTQ+ representation in mainstream family films. While studios like Disney are increasingly embracing diversity, critics argue about the timing, audience, and cultural impact of such portrayals.

Supporters see these storylines as crucial for visibility and inclusivity. Detractors, like Snoop, say they raise questions that parents and grandparents may not be ready to answer in a theater setting.

Conclusion:

The reaction to Snoop Dogg’s remarks underscores how deeply divided audiences remain on LGBTQ+ representation in children’s media. For some, films like Lightyear mark important progress toward inclusivity and acceptance.

For others, they raise concerns about what is appropriate for young viewers. As Hollywood continues to push for more diverse storytelling, the debate over when and how these narratives should appear in family entertainment shows no signs of slowing down.
