Apoorva Mukhija hints at retirement, criticises commercialisation of content creation: ‘I never took it that seriously’

Apoorva Mukhija says she wants to pursue new endeavors after gaining a fresh perspective from her reality TV experience on The Traitors.

Content creator Apoorva Mukhija has criticised the thriving commercialisation of content creation and signalled her intention to step away from the space. In an interview with The Indian Express, Mukhija described the online world as “a circus” in which news outlets chase her for clicks rather than merit.

Apoorva Mukhija has expressed her intention to step away from content creation, calling the industry a circus.

Apoorva Mukhija hints at retiring

Expressing her disillusionment with how content creation has turned into a business, Apoorva Mukhija said, “We all started doing this for fun, and now people call it an industry. It was just about talking to a camera , how did it become so serious? Now you have to fight to stay relevant, attend events, get papped, and maintain networks. I don’t know who commercialised this space so much. I never took it that seriously. I’m just a girl who wants to talk to a camera; it’s really not that deep.”

Highlighting her exhaustion with perpetual content creation, the creator said, “I want to retire from content creation. I have been doing it for too long, so I want to do something else. I am working on something else. If it pans out great, if it doesn’t, then I am always doing content.”

This announcement comes amid sustained scrutiny of Apoorva’s public appearances. Earlier this year, she faced backlash over remarks during an episode of Samay Raina’s India Got Latent, which even drew attention from the National Commission for Women.

Apoorva Mukhija’s career

Apoorva Mukhija first rose to fame as a digital creator, building a strong following through her unapologetic humour on social media. Her popularity on digital platforms eventually opened doors to the entertainment industry. Apoorva made her television debut with the reality show The Traitors India. Hosted by Karan Johar, the show premiered on June 12 this year, on Prime Video. The season concluded on July 3 with influencer Uorfi Javed and poker player Nikita Luther emerging as joint winners, taking home the top prize for outsmarting their fellow contestants.

Piyush Mishra Criticises Anurag Kashyap’s Filmmaking In Gulaal, Dev D

Piyush Mishra has criticised Anurag Kashyap for “ruining the second halves” of films like Dev D and Gulaal, claiming that the director tends to lose grip after strong beginnings. The writer, lyricist, and actor spoke candidly during a discussion he attended by Manoj Bajpayee, producer Ranjan Singh, director Raam Reddy, and Anurag Kashyap himself.

Piyush Mishra Criticises Anurag Kashyap For Ruining Second Halves Of His Films

When asked if he revisits some of Kashyap’s most acclaimed films, Mishra didn’t hold back. On the Humans of Cinema YouTube channel, Mishra said bluntly, “Gulaal toh… maaf karna Anurag. Par uska second half pata nahi kya tha. Iski dikkat yeh hai ki woh apni adhi film achhi bana leta hai, phir lagta hai ki bohot badiya film ban rahi hai, aur phir usse bigaad kar dekhta hai. Second half bigaad deta hai. Gulaal achhi film ban rahi thi, par isne uska bohot bigaad kiya.”

He also extended his critique to Dev D, noting that its highly praised opening lost momentum midway: “The first half was a classic, and then he ruined it.”

At this point, Manoj Bajpayee chimed in with a humorous remark that Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s quirky cameo in the song Emotional Attyachar ‘saved the second half. Mishra further included Gangs of Wasseypur in his criticism, saying, “I don’t know what his problem is. Gangs of Wasseypur had the same issue; he made the first part, then he lost his mind. I thought Dev D would be a film on alcoholism, and then it became something strange.”

Anurag Kashyap Moves On with Nishaanchi

While Mishra’s comments drew laughter from the panel, they also reflected a recurring criticism of Kashyap’s storytelling—his tendency to start strong but lose focus in the latter half. However, the filmmaker has little time to dwell on these remarks. He is now preparing for the release of Nishaanchi, a crime drama marking Aaishvary Thackeray’s acting debut, alongside Vedika Pinto, Monika Panwar, Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub, and Kumud Mishra. The film is scheduled for release on September 19.

Meanwhile, Manoj Bajpayee was recently seen Jugnuma – The Fable, Raam Reddy’s new film that hit theatres on September 12.

Stephen King criticises the “pornographic” violence in superhero films

Stephen King has criticised the depiction of violence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, describing it as “pornographic”.

The writer, who is most adapted living author in cinematic history, was speaking about the extent of the violence in the new film The Long Walk, which is based on his 1979 novel of the same name.

He told The Times that he insisted to screenwriter JT Mollner (Strange Darling) and director Francis Lawrence (The Hunger Games) that the young characters in the film, who enter a walking contest in which all but the winner will be executed, must be shown being brutally killed.

“If you look at these superhero movies, you’ll see…some supervillain who’s destroying whole city blocks but you never see any blood,” he explained. “And man, that’s wrong. It’s almost, like, pornographic.”

“I said, if you’re not going to show it [in The Long Walk], don’t bother. And so they made a pretty brutal movie.”

Set in a dystopian United States, the film depicts 100 young men entering an annual walking contest in which they must maintain a speed of at least three miles per hour or they will be killed. The winner is the last remaining walker.

It stars Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson and Charlie Plummer and is released in cinemas on September 12.

It is one of four major King adaptations to be released on the big screen in 2025: The Life Of Chuck, with Tom Hiddleston and Chiwetel Ejiofor, is out now, Osgood Perkins’ horror The Monkey was a hit in the Spring, while Edgar Wright’s remake of The Running Man is coming on November 7.

This is not the first time that King has spoken about the MCU – in 2023, he criticised people that were piling in on the miserable box office performance of The Marvels, calling it “adolescent fanboy hate”.

“I don’t go to MCU movies, don’t care for them, but I find this barely masked gloating over the low box office for THE MARVELS very unpleasant,” he wrote. “Why gloat over failure?”

Last month, he spoke about his wishes for the end of the Trump presidency. “I think it would be impeachment – which, in my view, would be a good ending. I would love to see him retired, let’s put it that way. The bad ending would be that he gets a third term and takes things over completely. It’s a horror story either way. Trump is a horror story, isn’t he?”
