How Anthropologie Conquered Millennial Cringe

First, the retailer wanted to introduce more newness and moments outside the traditional seasonal calendar. Next, was to build a digital marketing team, the kind that could jump in when an alleged Anthro rock was going viral. “We had no customer acquisition strategy,” Smith says. And finally, Smith was to slash Anthropologie’s reliance on promotions and discounts, returning the brand to full-price sales.

Five years on, Anthropologie has ballooned to $2.4 billion in fiscal 2025 from $1.6 billion in 2020, making it parent company Urbn’s largest brand (Urbn also owns Free People, Urban Outfitters and rental company Nuuly). The company is a fashion-lifestyle flywheel, with connected brands across the women’s, bridal, home and outdoor categories. It’s a complicated ship to steer, Smith says, and attributes it to Urbn’s vertically integrated supply chain as well as the executives leading each division, who she believes are experts in their categories. But she also has bigger goals in mind: Anthropologie Home, for example, is on track to double sales from $500 million to $1 billion in the next few years, a goal shared with investors in 2023.

“I’m so incredibly proud of our team because we are on our fourth year of consecutive [sales] increases, and we’ve grown our customer base by 50 per cent,” Smith says. “Within that, we grew both our existing customer base along with our new customers, which I think is hard to do if you specifically target just a younger consumer.”

And earlier this year, Smith made a bold play when the company spun out its bestselling own label, Maeve, into a standalone brand. The first store opened in October in Charleston, with another slated for Atlanta in January. Smith won’t share sales projections for Maeve, but sees potential for growth, and notes that the idea for a spin-off stemmed from the company’s financial team, who overlooked its margins.

Sombr Addresses Online Drama After Fan Called His Show ‘Cringe’

Sombr has responded to criticism he received from a concertgoer who apparently “hated” his show at Anthem in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 13, so much so that she recorded a nearly nine-minute TikTok video, which has since gone viral.

“I thought I was chronically online, but it’s just come to my attention that there’s a TikTok drama going around because a 25-year-old attended my concert and was basically complaining that there were too many tweens there, I was making too many brain-rot jokes, and she just thought it was a cringe concert,” Sombr began in his response.

Sombr’s response came a few days after the fan posted her video, in which the 25-year-old began by cautioning anyone planning to attend an upcoming show of his to “not spend your money on a Sombr concert.” She went on to explain that while attending his Washington, D.C. show, she was shocked to find his fanbase was primarily comprised of “tweens,” said she did not enjoy his jokes, and described a segment of the concert called the “Sombr Dating Show,” where he brought audience members onstage to call their exes. She also criticized him, claiming he said “super vulgar stuff about getting his dick sucked” while on stage, and asked his fans to “bark for me” — behavior she felt was inappropriate given his young audience.

She added, “It just doesn’t seem like he knows how to entertain. He’s maybe too young. Maybe he has to grow into it. I don’t know. Dancing was terrible, singing was terrible.”

While she referred to the experience as “a nightmare,” she admitted that the other members of the audience appeared to love it, with one fan apparently saying, “This is my generation’s David Bowie.” She then said, “I’m so sorry, slender man? We’re picking him, we’re picking the weird dancing dude?” whom she likened to Napoleon Dynamite and added that the show was “cringe.”

In his response, Sombr accused her of “body shaming” him, saying that “it’s kind of started a massive body shaming hate train directed towards me on a lot of videos of me on the internet right now.”

He went on to say, “I totally respect people having opinions, but I am a 20-year-old artist, freshly 20. And if you’re 25 years old and you’re going to come to my concert and not expect people younger than you to be there, when I, the artist, am five years younger than you, it’s just a skill issue.”

As far as his jokes, Sombr said that people who go to his concerts would be familiar with his online presence, adding, “I’ve never uttered a serious word in my life.” Plus, he said he spends “five minutes” making jokes at his shows, while the rest is music.

“Live a little, enjoy life,” he continued. “Every age, sex, sexuality, gender, race: Everyone is welcome in my concert, ad I mean everyone. You guys need to find problematic people to hate on, because I am just existing.”

Sombr’s debut album, I Barely Know Her — featuring hits “Back to Friends” and “12 to 12,” both of which he performed at the VMAs — arrived in August. Since his album dropped, his tour, which runs through November, has sold out, and he’s slated as the Saturday Night Live musical guest with host Nikki Glaser on Nov. 8.

Bigg Boss 19 looks good and fresh, say fans after BB replaces ‘cringe anthems’ with morning songs, unveils secret room

Bigg Boss is one of the most popular reality shows on Indian television, with fans eagerly awaiting each new season for its dose of drama and entertainment. Over the past two seasons, however, viewers voiced concerns about the show losing its spark. Now, with season 19, it seems the makers have taken that feedback seriously. Just one episode in, fans are already praising the season for feeling fresh, exciting, and true to the Bigg Boss essence once again.

Salman Khan returns as host for Bigg Boss 19.

Fans review Bigg Boss 19’s first episode

One of the biggest changes from the past two seasons is that season 19 doesn’t have the so-called “cringe anthems” played to wake up the contestants. Instead, it has returned to Bollywood songs, just like in the earlier seasons. A Reddit user shared a screenshot of Bigg Boss contestants dancing to Dhating Naach from Phata Poster Nikhla Hero and wrote, “Finally no more cringe anthem this year in Bigg Boss.”

Fans also shared their views on the first episode of Bigg Boss. One wrote, “Song + secret room! Finally BB19 on a good start.” Another commented, “This season looks good and fresh.” A third comment read, “Bigg Boss ka redemption era is going on or what.” One fan added, “Looks like they finally got the budget to buy song licences vs the stupid anthem.” Another praised the casting and wrote, “BB has clearly opened a personality buffet this szn. No pre-made fds, just raw start!”

In the previous seasons, fans accused Bigg Boss of being biased towards contestants and even criticised it for interfering in their decisions. However, this year, Bigg Boss has chosen to stay out of the decision-making process, which aligns with the theme “Gharwalon Ki Sarkaar”—handing over the power to the housemates themselves.

About Bigg Boss 19

On the very first day, Bigg Boss asked contestants to choose a person they felt was unworthy of being a housemate due to having the least interesting personality. The majority named Farhana Bhatt, and Bigg Boss announced that her journey had ended. However, in a twist, she was moved into a secret room, where she will monitor the contestants 24/7 and even play a role in decision-making.

This season stars 16 contestants, including Awez Darbar, Kunickaa Sadanand, Baseer Ali, Ashnoor Kaur, Gaurav Khanna, Pranit More, Tanya Mittal, Amaal Mallik, Nagma Mirajkar, international performer Natalia Janoszek, Mridul Tiwari and Abhishek Bajaj, among others. Salman Khan will once again host Weekend Ka Vaar. The show is available to watch on JioCinema and Colors TV.
