Kantara Chapter 1 box office prediction: Rishab Shetty film may beat Saiyaara and Chhaava, but no match for OG, Coolie

by jummy84 October 1, 2025

The much-awaited prequel to Kantara is releasing in theatres this Dussehra (2 October). The festive release is not just one of the most high-profile Kannada films of all time, but also among the biggest festive releases pan-India this year. Early advance booking trends indicate a solid opening for the film, but also show that its pan-India aspirations may have been a little too lofty.

Kantara Chapter 1 box office prediction: Rishab Shetty plays the lead in and directs the film, a prequel to the 2022 film Kantara.

Kantara Chapter 1 advance bookings

Written and directed by Rishab Shetty, Kantara Chapter 1 is a prequel to the 2022 blockbuster Kantara, which made over ₹400 crore at the box office. The upcoming film’s advance booking has crossed ₹12 crore gross for the opening day by 11 AM on the eve of its release. This figure is for all languages, and the number is dominated by the Kannada version, which alone accounts for ₹7.50 crore. The Hindi version is steadily rising with ₹2 crore advance booking gross so far.

Kantara Chapter 1 box office prediction

The original Kantara was a true pan-India hit, having earned ₹162 crore net in Kannada, ₹84 crore in Hindi, and ₹63 crore in Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam. This was despite the fact that its release was staggered. It was originally released only in Kannada, and the dubbed versions arrived only two weeks later. This time, the film is releasing in all five languages on one day, which will ensure a bigger opening. According to trade pundits, Kantara Chapter 1 is looking at a ₹30+ crore net opening in India. More liberal estimates put the number at even ₹40 crore.

This may include ₹15-17 crore from the Hindi version alone, a sizable number, but still less than what was initially expected. A week back, trade pundits were hoping for a ₹25-crore opening from Kantara Chapter 1 in Hindi alone. But those estimates have been lowered now.

Even then, a ₹35-40 crore opening for Kantara Chapter 1 would mean it will outdo every Bollywood release of the year, including Saiyaara ( ₹22 crore), Sikandar ( ₹26 crore), and Chhaava ( ₹31 crore). However, it is no match for some of the biggest pan-India releases of the year, such as Pawan Kalyan’s OG ( ₹84 crore) and Rajinikanth’s Coolie ( ₹65 crore).

All about Kantara Chapter 1

Kantara Chapter 1 stars Rishab Shetty in a tale set centuries before the events of the first Kantara. The film explores the birth of the mysteries depicted in the first film. It also stars Rukmini Vasanth, Jayaram, and Gulshan Devaiah. The film releases across India on 2 October.

Here’s The Truth Behind The Viral Claim of Aamir Khan Regretting His Cameo in Coolie

by jummy84 September 14, 2025
written by jummy84

Aamir Khan recently made a dashing cameo in Rajinikanth and Nagarjuna’s film Coolie. His appearance, however, received mixed responses from fans and critics alike. Some time back, a screenshot went viral suggesting that the Bollywood star had admitted regretting the role and called it a big mistake. As per the screenshot circulating on social media, the actor apparently told a portal that he accepted the role for Rajinikanth, and he still couldn’t figure out what his character was meant to you. He also allegedly claimed that there was no real purpose or thought behind it, and it was badly written.
He reportedly said, “I thought it would be a fun appearance, but clearly it didn’t land. Itna reaction milega socha nahi tha. But looking back, I understand why people were disappointed. The scene didn’t work, simple as that. It was a big mistake and one that I’ll be very careful about in the future.”

Now, Khan’s team has issued a statement clarifying that the actor never said so. The actor has firmly denied making any negative remarks about the film.
His spokesperson said, “Mr Aamir Khan has given no such interview and has made no negative comments about the film Coolie. Mr Khan has the highest regard for Mr Rajnikant, Mr Lokesh and in fact the entire team of Coolie. The film has done over 500 Cr at the box office which speaks for itself.”

The film, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and featuring Rajinikanth in a powerful lead role, has received widespread acclaim from both audiences and critics. Its box office collection crossing the ₹500 crore mark is proof that the film is one of the year’s biggest hits.

₹500 crore at box office: Where Rajinikanth starrer stands on list of highest grossing Indian films ever”>

Updated on: Aug 28, 2025 12:52 pm IST

Coolie, starring Rajinikanth, has become the third Indian film to breach the ₹500 crore mark at the worldwide box office this year.

Rajinikanth’s Coolie has entered the 500-crore club. On Wednesday, the Lokesh Kanagaraj-directed film crossed ₹500 crore worldwide gross. This makes it the third Indian film to do so in 2025, and the 27th overall. This also means that Rajinikanth is now among only the four Indian actors to have three such films (the other two being 2.0 and Jailer). But just how high is Coolie in the list of the highest-grossing Indian films?

Rajinikanth’s Coolie has earned over ₹500 crore at the box office.

We take a look:

Coolie’s rank in highest-grossing Indian films

The Rajinikanth film currently ranks 27th among the highest-grossing Indian films. Just above it are three YRF films: Saiyaara ( ₹556 crore), Dhoom 3, and Tiger Zinda Hai ( ₹558 crore each). It is now the 4th highest-grossing Tamil film of all time, surpassing the lifetime box office collection of Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan Part 1 ( ₹488 crore). The only Kollywood films ahead of it are 2.0 ( ₹723 crore), Jailer ( ₹610 crore), and Leo ( ₹605 crore).

Coolie enters top 10 South films in history

The four film industries colloquially called the ‘South’ – Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada – have all delivered multiple industry hits in the last decade, surpassing Hindi films on many occasions. That is why, despite earning over ₹500 crore, Coolie is ‘just’ ranked 10th in the list of highest-grossing South Indian films. It is behind Telugu films Baahubali 2, Pushpa 2, RRR, Kalki 2898 AD, Baahubali 1, and Salaar, as well as Kannada film KGF Chapter 2.

Coolie earned ₹268.75 crore net ( ₹309 crore gross) in the domestic territories over its 14 days. Overseas, the Lokesh Kanagaraj film has earned just under $21 million overseas ( ₹182 crore). This takes its worldwide gross to ₹501 crore.

Coolie stars Rajinikanth in the titular role of a retired coolie and union leader who gets embroiled in a gang’s activities after his friend’s death. The film also stars Nagarjuna, Shruti Haasan, and Soubin Shahir, along with Upendra and Aamir Khan in special appearances.

Coolie worldwide box office collection is now on course to reach ₹500 crore sometime next week. It will be the third Rajinikanth film to do so.

Coolie worldwide box office collection: After a difficult time at the ticket window on weekdays, Rajinikanth’s Coolie is back over the weekend. On its second Saturday, the film saw a 70% jump in collections at the domestic box office. Aided by some upswing at the overseas box office as well, Coolie was able to pull off a good day 10 and surpass two big films’ lifetime hauls.

Coolie worldwide box office update

Coolie saw a big jump in domestic earnings on Saturday, earning ₹10 crore net in India on the day, as opposed to ₹5.85 crore the previous day. This takes the film’s domestic earnings after 10 days to ₹245 crore net ( ₹291 crore gross). The film has also broken several overseas earnings records for Tamil cinema, courtesy of a bumper start. Its overseas collection now stands at an estimated $21 million ( ₹177 crore). This takes the film’s worldwide gross after 10 days to ₹468 crore.

On Saturday, as Coolie saw an upswing in collections worldwide, the film surpassed the lifetime collections of two recent hits – Salman Khan’s Tiger 3 ( ₹464 crore) and Shah Rukh Khan’s Dunki ( ₹454 crore). Both films were box office hits, but were also considered to have underperformed based on their star power. Coolie has crossed both in 10 days, and now looks set to reach the ₹500-crore mark sometime early next week.

Only three Tamil films have crossed the ₹500-crore mark in worldwide earnings: Rajinikanth’s 2.0 and Jailer, and Vijay’s Leo. Coolie would be the fourth to reach that milestone, in all likelihood on Tuesday.

All about Coolie

Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, Coolie is an action thriller that opened to mixed reviews but was appreciated by fans of Rajinikanth. In addition to the superstar, the film also stars Nagarjuna, Shruti Haasan, Soubin Shahir, Upendra, and Aamir Khan (in a cameo).

Rajinikanth’s Coolie Outshines Hrithik Roshan’s War 2 In Week 1 Box Office Collections – See The Numbers! | Glamsham.com

The box office battle between Rajinikanth’s Coolie and Hrithik Roshan’s War 2 was guaranteed to make sparks fly. But both big-budget movies have indicated signs of exhaustion just a week into release. Despite going past the ₹200 crore mark locally, their run has slowed down, causing eyebrows to rise about long-term performance.

Coolie Box Office Collection Day 8

Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, Coolie stormed into cinemas with huge expectation. On day 8, the film raked in ₹6.15 crore, taking its total domestic collections to ₹229.65 crore, as per Sacnilk data.

Starring Rajinikanth in the title role, and Nagarjuna as the villain Simon, the movie was a success in the beginning. The opening four days were huge on the box office, but the momentum dropped towards the latter half of the week. The movie also has a surprise Aamir Khan cameo, along with Shruti Haasan, Upendra, and Soubin Shahir in important roles.

Despite the slowdown, the film has been praised for its high-octane action and nostalgic energy. Nagarjuna described Coolie as a “celebration of legacy and reinvention,” highlighting its appeal to Rajinikanth fans across generations.

War 2 Box Office Collection Day 8

Though War 2 started well, its showing has otherwise been disappointing in the subsequent days. On day 8, the movie could only manage to generate ₹5 crore, taking its total to ₹204 crore at the local box office.

Directed by Ayan Mukerji and produced by Yash Raj Films, the follow-up to the 2019 blockbuster War has Hrithik Roshan, Jr. NTR, and Kiara Advani in lead roles. Even with the star power, the plot of the film has been criticized for its lack of depth and inability to keep viewers interested.

With a budget of ₹300–₹400 crore, War 2 is fighting hard to merit its gigantic investment. Despite having the backing of an entire cast with Ashutosh Rana and Anil Kapoor joining in, the absence of narrative clout has already seen weekday collections plummet.

Verdict: Momentum Slows for Both Films

Both War 2 and Coolie have passed the ₹200 crore mark, but weak collections indicate that audience enthusiasm could be slowing down. While Coolie continues to bank on Rajinikanth’s brand, War 2 will require more powerful word-of-mouth to hold up. When Saiyaara set the benchmark high last year, these movies now have an uphill task.

Coolie producer approaches Madras HC to challenge Rajinikanth film’s A certificate from CBFC for ‘celebrating violence’

After watching Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Rajinikanth-starrer Coolie, many were surprised why the film was awarded an A certificate.

The producer of Coolie, Sun TV Network Limited’s Sun Pictures, has approached the Madras High Court to challenge the A certificate granted to the Rajinikanth film by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). A report by The Hindu states that the producer was ‘shocked’ upon receiving an email from the certification board that their film ‘celebrated violence’.

Coolie is directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and stars Rajinikanth in the lead role.

Coolie producer approaches HC over A certificate

The A certificate given to Coolie meant that people under 18 could not watch the film in theatres. The production firm filed a civil miscellaneous appeal against the CBFC’s decision. It was pointed out that anyone who applies for a film certification can appeal before the tribunal within 30 days. Coolie was released in theatres on 14 August with an A certificate, and the film’s producers chose to release it before challenging the certification.

In the grounds of appeal, Sun Pictures had said that it produced Coolie to celebrate Rajinikanth completing 50 years in cinema and that the film had become a ‘mega blockbuster’. However, when they applied for the CBFC certification on 28 July, they claimed that they received a response on 31 July that the movie was ‘celebrating violence’ and would hence be given an A certificate. A revising committee also issued an A certificate for the film on 4 August.

Sun Pictures also questioned the CBFC for giving a U/A certificate for movies like Yash-starrer KGF and Vijay-starrer Beast, as those films had more violence than Coolie did.

About Coolie

Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Coolie stars Rajinikanth, Nagarjuna, Soubin Shahir, Shruti Haasan, Rachita Ram, Sathyaraj, Upendra and Aamir Khan. The film tells the story of Deva (Rajinikanth), who is looking for answers after the sudden death of his friend Rajasekhar (Sathyaraj). Numerous people on social media wondered why Coolie had gotten an A certificate, given that it didn’t have more violence than any other commercial cinema.

Rajinikanth’s Coolie Continues To Roll: Film Passes Rs 400 Crore Worldwide Despite Dip In Collections! | Glamsham.com

by jummy84 August 20, 2025
written by jummy84

Superstar Rajinikanth’s new release, Coolie, helmed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, received thumping response at the box office on its opening, which is their first association together. Released on August 14, a day prior to Independence Day, the film managed to rake in the long weekend and soon marked new milestones both locally and internationally. But like most mass entertainers, Coolie too has seen a dramatic decline in collections post-opening weekend.

Box Office Performance: Strong Opening, Weekday Lull

According to industry monitor Sacnilk, Coolie raked in Rs 9.5 crore on day six, which was a significant fall from the Rs 12 crore it earned on Monday. The Monday number itself was a 65% drop compared to the weekend’s top collections. Nevertheless, the film crossed the Rs 200 crore mark locally, and its worldwide collection has crossed Rs 410 crore, going past its supposed budget of Rs 350–400 crore.

The major revenues of the film still keep coming from Tamil Nadu, while the Hindi dubbed version too has brought in decently. Nevertheless, Karnataka and the Telugu-speaking states have witnessed lukewarm support. If the momentum continues, Coolie is heading to become a possible replacement for Rajinikanth’s 2023 blockbuster Jailer, which earned more Rs 600 crore worldwide.

War 2 and Mixed Reviews Competition

Coolie made its entry along with War 2, featuring Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR, which was also slated to take over the box office. War 2’s performance has been disappointing in comparison, raking in Rs 8.2 crore on its sixth day and still short of the Rs 200 crore mark at home.

Rajinikanth’S Coolie Continues To Roll Film Passes Rs 400 Crore Worldwide Despite Dip In Collections! _Pic Courtesy Instagram

Even with the stellar numbers, Coolie has not been uniformly received. While Rajinikanth’s devout fans hailed the film, mainstream audiences and critics felt it was lacking in the depth and ingenuity one could expect from a Lokesh Kanagaraj effort. Cameos by A-listers Aamir Khan and Nagarjuna and an offbeat turn by Soubin Sahir were attempts to create a ‘pan-India’ appeal, though some thought it was at the expense of the ‘Superstar’s mass base.”.

What’s Next for Rajinikanth

After Coolie, Rajinikanth will be back in Jailer 2, the sequel to his blockbuster 2023 release, pairing up once again with director Nelson Dilipkumar. As fans await his next, Coolie is still running in theaters, looking to establish itself among the year’s highest-grossing Indian films.

Coolie Vs War 2 Box Office Day 6: Rajinikanth Starrer Continues To Lead; Hrithik Roshan-Jr NTR’s Actioner Still To Enter Rs 200 Cr Club

On August 14, the nation saw an epic box office clash between Rajinikanth’s Coolie and Hrithik Roshan-Jr NTR’s War 2. Despite tough competition – before the release for screens and now as the audience is divided, both films have managed to performed well. While each film earned have managed to pull in the crowds, only one film has entered the Rs 200 crore club with it domestic nett collection while the other is still inches away from achieving the feat. Scroll below to check out the films’ nett latest earning at the Indian box office.

Coolie VS War 2 Box Office

As per recent Sacnilk reports, early estimates suggest Coolie earned Rs 9.50 crore on Day 6 across all languages while War 2 managed to collect Rs 8.75 crore. This means that the Hrithik Roshan-Jr NTR starrer collected around Rs 75 lakh lesser than the Rajinikanth actioner on Tuesday. The severe rainfall in different locations of the country could be one of the reasons for the low numbers.

Day Wise Breakdown

CoolieWar 2
Day 1 (Thursday)Rs 65 Cr52 Cr
Day 2 (Friday – Independence Day) Rs 54.75 CrRs 57.85 Cr
Day 3 (Saturday – Janmashtami) Rs 39.5 CrRs 33.25 Cr

Day 6 (Tuesday)Rs 9.50 Cr* (Early Estimates)Rs 8.25 Cr (Early Estimate)
Total (India Net Collection)Rs 216.00 Cr Rs 192.75 Cr

As of now, the Rajinikanth-led multi-starrer is leading the box office race with a total margin of Rs 23.25 crore.

Coolie, War 2 Reviews

Both films opened to mixed review. While some praised Coolie, others pointed out its shortcomings. Similarly, several moviegoers based the latest YRF Spy Universe film for its predictability while others showered it with love for its action. Bollywood Bubble gave both the Rajinikanth multi-starrer and the Hrithik Roshan-Jr NTR starrer War 2 a 2-star rating.

While highlighting some positives, out reviewer wrote in their review, “War 2 had all the right ingredients on paper, but wasted two megastars, exotic locations, and the backing of YRF’s spy franchise. The weak writing, overblown action, and style-over-substance execution turn this potential blockbuster into a missed opportunity. It’s a shadow of the original War, with the hype far outpacing the final product. Watch it only if you’re a die-hard fan of Hrithik or NTR. Everyone else can wait for streaming.”

Talking about what works in Coolie, the reviewer wrote, “The attempt is commendable, despite the final result not living up to expectations.” They added in the review, “Coolie is a fun watch if you are heading to theatres to only watch Rajinikanth and experience his aura and swag. If you go in looking for content – or anything sensible, you will be deeply disappointed. Anirudh Ravichander’s soundtrack album is the only saving grace but not enough to redeem the film.”
