Dharmendra, 89 years old, a veteran Bollywood actor, has been admitted to Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital amidst concern for his health in view of his 90th birthday on December 8. Reports about his health have been mixed. While some say that he has been hospitalized for four to five days, others clarify that his visit is merely for a routine medical check-up.

A family source close to him informed India Today, “Someone might have spotted him and created a news story out of it. He is absolutely fine and in great spirits. This visit is only for scheduled tests.” On their part, India TV reported that Dharmendra goes for tests regularly, given his age, and this is one such routine check-up. Sources say he is under observation and his family is keeping a close watch on the reports that come out, but he is healthy and cheerful.

Dharmendra underwent an eye graft surgery earlier this year. The actor was spotted leaving the hospital with a bandaged eye. And while addressing the media, he had reassured fans in Hindi, “I am strong. Abhi bhi Dharmendra mein bahut dum hai. Meri aankh ka graft ho gaya hai. Love you, my audience and fans.”

This marquee star, affectionately known as the “He-Man of Bollywood,” never retired and is still active in films. He will next appear in Ikkis, a biographical war drama helmed by Sriram Raghavan for Maddock Films. The movie also stars Agastya Nanda, Jaideep Ahlawat, and Simar Bhatia, among others, and releases in December 2025. Based on the true story of Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal, a Param Vir Chakra awardee from the 1971 Indo-Pak war, Dharmendra plays the role of Arun’s grandfather as he narrates stories of bravery that motivate the young soldier.

The veteran actor has kept fit, positive, and ready for a milestone 90th birthday despite recent health concerns.

To say that Shah Rukh Khan immortalized Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’s Raj as the ultimate symbol of romance is just the bare minimum. In the iconic ‘Tujhe Dekha Toh Yeh Jaana’ sequence with the superstar’s signature pose, while standing in the Sarson Ka Khet or the train scene in the climax, every die-hard Bollywood romantics gulped every scene and emotion of the movie as passionately as possible. But did you know that Shah Rukh Khan rejected the movie 4 times? Yes, you heard that right.

We almost missed out on the superstar playing the cult character. Reason? Shah Rukh Khan thought he was too ‘old’ to play the role of Raj in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. Imagine the King Of Romance wanting to turn down a role like Raj, sounds a bummer, right? But it ended up happening almost 4 times.

Shah Rukh Khan Initially Rejected Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge

According to a news report in ScoopWhoop, SRK, in a documentary had said, “I never wanted to do a romantic role. Because by the time I joined films I was 26. Normally, romantic films meant that you started off from a college and then you work your way up into romance and then run away with a girl, or committed suicide with a girl. I thought I was too old to be a romantic hero.”

The actor further said he was keen to take up negative roles like Darr and Baazigar, which he felt gave him more prominence. After repeatedly rejecting Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, director-producer Aditya Chopra offered the role to Saif Ali Khan. But as they say, destiny always finds its way to the things meant for you. Yash Chopra persuaded his son to convince Shah Rukh Khan.

Yash Chopra himself decided to meet Shah Rukh Khan and said, “You must take up romantic roles on the big screens if you want to survive in the industry.” The actor could not refuse the legendary producer and nodded to the movie. And the rest, they say, is history. The movie became one of the most successful films in Indian cinema and the longest-running movie in the country. Most importantly, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge redefined SRK as a milestone actor in romance and charm.

What Next Shah Rukh Khan?

SRK appeared in three back-to-back films in 2023, including Pathaan, Jawan and Dunki. He also had a cameo role in Tiger 3. The superstar is now gearing up for his next big release, titled King, one of the most-anticipated Bollywood films. The movie is scheduled to be released in 2026.

Cancer continues to be a major public health challenge in India, with cases steadily increasing across both urban and rural areas. Lifestyle changes, environmental factors, and early detection gaps are contributing to a growing cancer burden nationwide.

Recent findings indicate a sharp rise in cancer cases in India, especially in urban centers like Bengaluru.(Pexels)

An August 20 study by the Indian Council of Medical Research’s (ICMR) National Cancer Registry Programme, which analysed data from 43 population-based cancer registries across India between 2015 and 2019, sheds light on the regional patterns and trends of cancer incidences and mortalities. Bengaluru women among top for breast, cervical and oral cancer

According to the analysis, Bengaluru ranks among the top three cities for breast cancer and women here are also in the top 10 for cervical and oral cancer incidences. Among men, lung cancer emerges as the most frequently diagnosed in southern India and metropolitan cities, including Bengaluru, Delhi, Chennai, and Thiruvananthapuram.

Nationally, India reported an estimated 15.62 lakh cancer cases in 2024, with over 8.74 lakh deaths, marking an increase from 14.6 lakh cases in 2022. In Bengaluru, the incidence of cancer among women is around 140 per 100,000, while men report approximately 125 per 100,000, placing the city sixth in female cancer incidences nationwide.

Regional disparities and common cancer types

The study also highlighted regional disparities: cities in the Northeast, including Aizawl, East Khasi Hills, and Kamrup Urban, reported the highest cancer incidence rates, with oesophageal cancer being most prevalent. Other high-burden regions include Kerala and Kashmir.

Among males, oral, lung, and prostate cancers are most common, while among females, breast and cervical cancers top the list. Oral cancer showed significant increases in several registries, with Ahmedabad recording the steepest rise.

“The study highlights the increasing cancer burden and the need for targeted strategies to improve prevention, early detection, and care across India,” the researchers noted in JAMA Network Open.

India currently ranks second in Asia and third globally in cancer cases, with a lifetime risk of 11%. The Global Cancer Observatory projects that by 2045, the number of new cancer cases in India could rise to approximately 25 lakh annually.

Alzheimer’s is a rising health concern: Doctor explains 6 brain-healthy habits that can beat cognitive decline | Health

Alzheimer’s, one of the most common causes of dementia, is one of the fast-evolving public health concerns. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Aravind Badiger, technical director, BDR Pharmaceuticals said, “In India alone, nearly 5.3 million people are impacted and Alzheimer’s accounts for approximately 70% of them. While age remains the largest risk factor, current scientific research is increasingly showing that our daily decisions can affect brain health and can even lower the risk of Alzheimer’s.” Also read | Early-onset Alzheimer’s disease in your 20s? Dr Aravind Badiger further shared key brain habits that can help in avoiding Alzheimer’s:

1. Stay active physically

Exercise regularly will boost blood flow to the brain, suppress inflammation, and stimulate the release of protective chemicals. Even 30 minutes of brisk walking, yoga, or cycling a day, five days a week, will sharply lower the risk of intellectual decline.

2. Challenge the mind

Brain exercise is mental exercise. Reading, puzzles, learning another language, or playing an instrument exercises brain links and builds cognitive reserve that delays dementia.

In the study, the team led by Universite de Montreal psychology professor Sylvie Belleville, found hyperactivation in certain brain areas in people not yet diagnosed with Alzheimer's but who were worried about their memory and who exhibited risk factors for the disease.(Unsplash)

3. Eating food that nourishes the brain

Better brain function is linked to a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, fish, and healthy fats. A diet rich in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids reduces cognitive impairment risk. Also read | Walking daily may protect your brain from Alzheimer’s, reveals 10-year study

4. Get enough sleep

The brain’s health is determined by having sufficient sleep. At deep sleep, the brain also removes harmful proteins such as beta-amyloid, which is linked with Alzheimer’s disease. Adults require 7–8 hours of uninterrupted sleep at night.

5. Reduce stress

Chronic stress and depression both accelerate brain aging. Evidence-based strategies to promote mental health and cognitive performance include mindfulness, meditation, relaxation breathing techniques, and physical relaxation activities.

6. Continue to be socially active

Developing relationships with people protects the brain, but social isolation raises the risk of dementia. Both intellectual and emotional stimulation can be obtained through encouraging communication, taking part in group activities, and having deep discussions.
