Legal Community And Corporate Leaders Applaud Emraan Hashmi and Yami Gautam’s HAQ

by jummy84 November 4, 2025
written by jummy84

Emraan Hashmi and Yami Gautam’s HAQ is all set to release on the big screen this week. Inspired by true events, the film sees Yami play a head strong woman who fights for her dignity and equality after her husband divorces her.

Ahead of the release, Junglee Pictures, led by Mr. Vineet Jain (MD, The Times Group), hosted an exclusive screening of the film. The event saw an esteemed gathering of High Court Judges, senior lawyers, bureaucrats, and corporate leaders, who lauded the film’s authenticity, powerful performances, and socially relevant themes.

HAQ is directed by Suparn S Varma and written by Reshu Nath, It is inspired by a landmark Supreme Court judgment and explores the Uniform Civil Code, Triple Talaq, and gender equality before the law.

Continuing its legacy with films like Raazi, Badhaai Ho, Badhaai Do, Junglee Pictures reaffirms its commitment to cinema with social impact.

HAQ also features Vartika Singh making her debut with the film and powerhouse performers Sheeba Chaddha, Danish Hussain, and Aseem Hattangady.

Talking about the film, Yami Gautam said, “This story moved me deeply. It’s not just Shazia’s fight, it’s a reflection of the strength and resilience of countless women who’ve been told to stay silent. Portraying her demanded empathy, conviction, and an unshakeable belief in justice. This film is more than a role for me. Its a reminder that it takes just one voice to make a difference.”

“The courtroom becomes a warzone of ideas, faith, identity, love, and justice colliding all at once. It’s powerful, provocative, and deeply human,” added Emraan Hashmi.

Director Suparn S Varma says, “HAQ is more than a courtroom battle, it’s the story of a voice that shook the nation. When women were expected to stay silent, one voice echoed across the nation. It is a story of courage, self-respect, and an unwavering fight for identity, dignity, and equality.”

Michael J. Fox says representing the Parkinson’s community is a ‘privilege’

by jummy84 October 24, 2025
written by jummy84

Beloved Canadian actor Michael J. Fox reflected on maintaining a positive outlook following his Parkinson’s diagnosis, calling it a “tremendous privilege” to support the Parkinson’s community through his charitable foundation, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year.

Fox, 64, stopped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to discuss his memoir Future Boy, which was released on Oct. 14, and to raise awareness for the disease.

“2025 marks 25 years of the Michael J. Fox Foundation, which has raised over $2.5 billion for Parkinson’s disease,” Colbert said. “How does that feel to you to know that, that is such a huge part of your legacy?”

Fox said when he was diagnosed, he “took some time to solve it for myself for seven years” before deciding to go public with it.

“People’s response was so good, and then I realized the overwhelming force of that and all the energy focused on that, like I could tune it up and take that, and turn it into something positive,” Fox said.

Colbert told Fox that he’s not only admired for raising funds for research for the disease but also for remaining in the public eye and being a face for Parkinson’s.

“It’s really important that I don’t show up and say nothing if I have something to say, to show up and say it because people that had Parkinson’s for years were stigmatized,” Fox said. “So now to represent them, and to be a place marker in society and claim this ground for us … I’m so flattered by it. I’m so humbled by it.”

“But it’s not about me. It’s about all these families and people that want change and want things to get better and want to be healthy.”

During his sit-down conversation with Colbert on Oct. 21, Fox also discussed what it was like juggling filming Back to the Future and the popular sitcom Family Ties at the same time.

“You were playing Alex P. Keaton by day on Family Ties. Full day of shooting on one soundstage and then Back to the Future at night,” Colbert said.

“The teamsters come pick me up, throw me in the shower, get me a cup of coffee,” Fox recalled.

He said that he would drink his coffee in the shower and then grab a milkshake on the way to set, only surviving on three to four hours of sleep for three months.

“I was 23 years old and I was too stupid to know better,” Fox said.

Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991 at the age of 29 and founded the non-profit in 2000 to fund research for a cure and to improve therapies for those living with the disease.

Parkinson’s is a disorder of the central nervous system that mainly affects one’s motor functions. The condition causes gradual damage to parts of a person’s brain, resulting in numerous symptoms, including tremors, slow movement and stiff and inflexible muscles. There is no cure.

In an interview with CBS Sunday Morning in 2023, Fox said the degenerative condition has made aging a challenge. He described Parkinson’s as a “gift that keeps on taking.”

“It sucks having Parkinson’s,” Fox told interviewer Jane Pauley. “It’s getting tougher, it’s getting harder, every day you suffer, but that’s the way it is.”

Fox said Parkinson’s has led to several injuries over the years, including breaking bones in his face and other parts of his body, and the discovery of a benign tumour on his spine.

He clarified that people do not die directly of Parkinson’s disease, but Fox wasn’t naive to his own mortality either.

“I’m not going to be 80. I won’t be 80,” Fox said.

He claimed that falling, aspirating food and pneumonia can all be seen as “big” killers for those with Parkinson’s.

“I recognize how hard this is for people and recognize how hard it is for me, but I have a certain set of skills that allow me to deal with this stuff, and I realize, with gratitude, optimism is sustainable,” he explained. “If you can find something to be grateful for, then you find something to look forward to, and you carry on.”

Fox officially retired from acting in 2020, but recently revealed he’ll be guest-starring in an episode of TV show Shrinking in 2026.

In November 2023, he was given an honorary Oscar, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, for his philanthropic efforts in Parkinson’s research. The award is given to an “individual in the motion picture industry whose humanitarian efforts have brought credit to the industry,” according to The Academy’s website.

Neil Young Pulling Music from Amazon, Calls for Boycott: “Support Your Community”

by jummy84 October 10, 2025
written by jummy84

Neil Young has had enough of Amazon.

The classic rocker has announced that he’ll be pulling his music from the massive online retailer, and is calling for a boycott of the Jeff Bezos-founded company.

“FORGET AMAZON AND WHOLE FOODS. FORGET FACEBOOK. “BUY LOCAL. BUY DIRECT,” reads his post on the Neil Young Archives website. “BEZOS SUPPORTS THIS GOVERNMENT. IT DOES NOT SUPPORT YOU OR ME.”

Young’s message continues:

“The time is here.
FORGET AMAZON.
Soon my music will not be there. It is easy to buy local. Support your community.
Go to the local store.
Don’t go back to the big corporations who have sold out America.
We all have to give up something to save America from the Corporate Control Age it is entering.
They need you to buy from them.
Don’t.
They shut down our government
your income
your safety
your family’s health security.
Take America Back
together, stop buying from the
big corporations
support local business.
Do the right thing. Show who you are.”

It has yet to be revealed if Young is just pulling his music from the Amazon Music streaming platform, or if he’ll be removing his physical products from the store as well.

Of course, this isn’t the first time Young has pulled his music from a platform. It was back in 2022 when he demanded that his music be removed from Spotify over misinformation about vaccines spread on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast. Just last year, he announced his unenthusiastic return to the streaming platform after Rogan’s podcast was no longer exclusive to Spotify.

In regard to Facebook, it was in August of this year when Young ceased all activities on his official Facebook page in response to a Reuters report revealing that Meta’s AI chatbots have been permitted to have “romantic or sensual” conversations with minors.

His rage against the current administration was on full display last month with the official release of the new song, “Big Crime,” which calls out Donald Trump for (among other things) “fascist crimes,” adding the declaration, “Don’t want soldiers on our streets.”

Sophie Ellis-Bextor Slams Transphobia, Defends Trans Community

by jummy84 October 6, 2025
written by jummy84

After being uplifted throughout her career by the LGBTQ+ community, disco-pop star Sophie Ellis-Bextor is making sure that the community knows she stands firmly with them in a new interview.

In an interview with The Independent published Sunday (Oct. 5), the “Murder on the Dancefloor” hitmaker spoke out about the state of politics surrounding the trans community in 2025, sharing her disdain at seeing increased attacks against the community, especially in online spaces. Speaking specifically about those spreading transphobic views online, Ellis-Bextor said she was dismayed at the fervor with which many of them spoke.

“These people make trans people their whole personality and spend their entire day checking their socials and being angry, whereas trans people themselves just want to be under the radar and live their lives,” she explained. Her fears are confirmed by the data. A February study found that instances of hate speech on X rose by roughly 50% in the months after Elon Musk purchased the platform in 2022.

Ellis-Bextor continued, adding that movements such as Pride felt more vital than ever. “There was a time when Pride felt like a celebration of all the shoulders that people were able to stand on, but now it feels like it’s an absolute political necessity,” she said. “I suppose you have to be optimistic that things will get better again, but I do get very down about it.”

Elsewhere in the interview, the singer explained that she’s had to deal with people in her personal life turning on the trans community over the course of the last few years. “I had one of my girlfriends go on quite a weird flip, and it was really affecting me,” she explained. “And you definitely do need to assert that you feel really differently, and then just find ways to support what you believe is being on the right side of history.”

The interview comes a few weeks after the release of Ellis-Bextor’s new album Perimenopop, the singer’s return to disco-pop after the runaway success of her song “Murder on the Dancefloor” in 2024 thanks to its prominent sync in Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn. Ellis-Bextor spoke to Billboard that year about earning her first Billboard Hot 100 entry thanks to the film. “My relationship with the song is great, I perform it all the time — it’s been the song that people associate the most with me,” she said. “But to have it having this little wild adventure on the charts is actually bonkers.”

Statue of rock n’ roll queen Tina Turner unveiled in Tennessee community where she grew up

by jummy84 September 27, 2025
written by jummy84

BROWNSVILLE, Tenn. — A 10-foot statue of rock n’ roll queen Tina Turner was unveiled Saturday in the rural Tennessee community where she grew up — before becoming a Grammy-winning singer, an electrifying stage performer, and one the world’s most recognizable and popular entertainers.

Statue of rock n’ roll queen Tina Turner unveiled in Tennessee community where she grew up

The statue was revealed during a ceremony at a park in Brownsville, located about an hour drive east of Memphis. The city of about 9,000 people is near Nutbush, the community where Turner went to school as a child. As a teen, she attended high school just steps from where the statue now stands.

The statue shows Turner with her signature wild hairdo and holding a microphone, as if she was singing on stage. It was designed by sculptor Fred Ajanogha, who said he tried to capture her flexibility of movement on stage, how she held the microphone with her index finger extended, and her hair style, which he compared to the “mane of a lion.”

Turner died May 24, 2023 at age 83 after a long illness in her home in Küsnacht near Zurich. Her Grammy-winning singing career included the hit songs “Nutbush City Limits,” “Proud Mary,” “Private Dancer,” and “We Don’t Need Another Hero,” from the film “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.” Her movie credits also include “Tommy” and “Last Action Hero.”

Turner teamed with husband Ike Turner for hit records and live shows in the 1960s and ’70s. She survived her troubled marriage to succeed in middle age with the chart-topping “What’s Love Got To Do With It,” released in 1984.

Her admirers ranged from Mick Jagger to Beyoncé to Mariah Carey, and she was known as the “Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll.”

The unveiling was part of the annual Tina Turner Heritage Days, a celebration of her life growing up in rural Tennessee, before she moved away as a teenager. The statue was sculpted in clay by Ajanogha in Atlanta and cast in bronze by a West Tennessee foundry, and it took about a year to complete. It is 7 feet and 9 inches tall with a base of 2 feet, making it stand about 10 feet high .

Karen Cook said she traveled from Georgia to attend the event with her friend, a cousin of Turner’s, to honor the legendary performer.

“She’s a great artist, I love her music,” said Cook, 59. “My mom listened to her a lot. It’s a big deal and a great thing for the community to have Tina Turner in her small town.”

About 50 donors gave money for the statue, including Ford Motor Co., which donated $150,000. Ford is building an electric truck factory in nearby Stanton.

The statue stands near a museum honoring Turner at the the West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center in Brownsville. The museum opened in 2014 inside the renovated Flagg Grove School, a one-room building where Turner attended classes in Nutbush. The school closed in the 1960s and was used as a barn before the dilapidated building was moved by tractor-trailer from Nutbush to Brownsville.

Bollywood has come a long way when it comes to the portrayal of the LGBTQIA+ community on screen. While independent and art cinema was always known to embrace queer characters with sensitivity, commercial cinema has finally followed the suit and has started representing the community authentically.

Over the years, there have been several Indian films that have masterfully depicted the painful struggles, the beautiful romances, and the countless trials and tribulations faced by queer people. Here are the 10 best Indian LGBTQIA+ films that have impressed us with their earnest portrayal of the community.

1. Aligarh (2015)

  • IMDb Rating: &.8/10
  • Director: Hansal Mehta
  • Streaming On: Zee5

Plot: Aligarh tells the heartbreaking true story of Ramchandra Siras, a professor at Aligarh Muslim University, who was sacked from his position on the grounds of ‘morality’ for being gay. Siras was forced to come out after some locals invaded his home and found him in bed with another man. Journalist Deepu Sebastian then decides to help him and the matter is brought to court. Director Hansal Mehta presented the story with utmost honesty and sensibility. Also, full marks to Manoj Bajpayee and Rajkummar Rao for their nuanced portrayal of Ramchandra and Deepu, respectively.

2. Kapoor & Sons (2016)

  • IMDb Rating: 7.7/10
  • Director: Shakun Batra
  • Streaming On: Prime Video

Plot: One of the first few commercial films to step away from the stereotypical portrayal of queer characters, Kapoor and Sons wonderfully shows a man at peace with his sexuality, whose urban family tries to come to terms with it. This film about a dysfunctional family has some heartfelt moments, especially when the mother discovers that her son is homosexual. The icing on the cake is the amazing ensemble, comprising Rishi Kapoor, Fawad Khan, Ratna Pathak Shah, Rajat Kapoor, Sidharth Malhotra, and Alia Bhatt.

3. Fire (1996)

  • IMDb Rating: 7.1/10
  • Director: Deepa Mehta
  • Streaming On: Not available

Plot: Back in 1996, Shabana Azmi and Nandita Das broke the norm by starring as a lesbian couple in Deepa Mehta’s Fire. The film follows two women, married in the same household, who grow closer while being stuck in loveless marriages. Touted as one of the first mainstream Bollywood films to portray same-sex romance, Fire was met with protests by a section of the crowd at that time and started a much-needed conversation about the rights of gay and lesbian people.

4. Moothon (2019)

  • IMDb Rating: 7.4/10
  • Director: Geetu Mohandas
  • Streaming On: Zee5

Plot: Directed by Geetu Mohandas, Moothon is a Malayalam film that chronicles the journey of a 14-year-old teenager from Lakshadweep who travels to Mumbai in search of his elder brother, Akbar, but gets embroiled in the world of drugs, prostitutes, and trafficking. While being in Mumbai, he learns that his brother had fallen for another man, Ameer and had left home years ago. The film breaks stereotypes around same-sex love with the intense romance between Akbar (Nivin Pauly) and Ameer (Roshan Mathew).

5. Memories in March (2010)

  • Director: Sanjoy Nag
  • Streaming On: Hoichoi

As she learns that her late son had a secret lover, Ornob, she confronts him but eventually, the two form a heart-touching bond. Set in Kolkata, the film explores themes of acceptance, grief, and self-discovery. Deepti Naval and Rituparno Ghosh gave powerful performances in the movie as Arati and Ornob, respectively.

6. Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan (2020)

  • IMDb Rating: 5.8/10
  • Director: Hitesh Kewalya
  • Streaming On: Prime Video

Plot: Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan blended family comedy with gay romance and portrayed queer relationships in an entertaining yet authentic way that made the concept easier to comprehend for even small-town folks. The movie revolves around Kartik Singh (Ayushmann Khurrana) and Aman Tripathi (Jitendra Kumar), who are in love with each other but the latter’s family disapproves of their relationship. Also starring bundles of talent like Gajraj Rao and Neena Gupta, the film became a box office hit and was appreciated for its social commentary draped in a light-hearted narrative.

7. My Brother…Nikhil (2005)

As he is thrown out of his house, he gets support from his sister, Anamika (Juhi), and his boyfriend, Nigel (Purab Kohli). With its engaging narrative, the film was credited for making a large section of audiences aware of HIV and AIDS, and was also lauded for its sensible portrayal of homosexuality.

8. Margarita with A Straw (2014)

  • IMDb Rating: 7.2/10
  • Director: Shonali Bose

Plot: Remembered for Kalki Koechlin’s stellar performance as a girl with cerebral palsy, Margarita with a Straw tells the story of Laila, who falls in love with another woman. As she struggles with her condition and copes with her sexuality, Laila gets a new perspective on life. The Shonali Bose directorial treats the lesbian relationship as a natural part of Laila’s personal growth and touches upon the themes of self-love, inclusion, and self-acceptance, without being preachy.

9. Darmiyaan: In Between (1997)

  • IMDb Rating: 7/10

She leaves the boy with his grandmother and starts wasting her life away on alcohol. However, her son endeavors to save her life. Despite societal taboos, the film fearlessly explores identity, acceptance, and love. Kirron Kher as Zeenat Begum and Arif Zakaria as Immi have given performances of a lifetime in this Kalpana Lajmi directorial.

Jay-Z is doubling down on his love for New York City by investing in what he calls a “world class destination” in the heart of Times Square. He shared his vision in a new interview with City & State New York.

Through Roc Nation, Jay-Z has partnered with SL Green and Caesars to propose a casino at 1515 Broadway.

“New York City is the entertainment capital of the world,” he said. “Caesars Palace Times Square is an extension of culture.”

He believes the project will support the community and Broadway.

Addressing critics, he emphasized responsible gaming programs and investments in arts and public resources.

“Our goal is to create opportunity and ensure this project delivers real value,” he added.
