American centenarian Si Liberman, 101, has shared his seven ‘longevity tips’, drawing from his remarkable life experiences, including surviving a coma, the Great Depression, a heart attack, and enemy fire over Nazi Germany in World War II. In an October 13 piece he wrote for The Washington Post, Si, shared seven hard-earned tips he picked up along the way that contributed to his long life. Si Liberman, 101, attributes his longevity partly to not smoking, a habit prevalent among his peers when he was young.

He wrote in the article titled, ‘I’m 101 years old: Here are 7 things I think are ‘longevity secrets’:

1. Focus on relationships

“I’ve been very lucky. I’ve been married for 76 years to my wife, Dorothy, 97. We have two terrific children who we’re very close to, and two grandchildren who always keep in touch,” Si said.

2. Don’t smoke

He added, “Most everyone smoked when I was young, but I didn’t. When I started dating my wife, she was smoking now and again, but I got her to quit.”

3. Exercise and eat healthy

“We’ve always tried to eat healthy. I have fruit for breakfast and eat a lot of fish. After moving to Florida 14 years ago, my routine has included walking on the beach followed by swimming in our building’s pool,” Si said.

4. Have a positive attitude

“Despite having to get through some dark days, I’ve never been down for very long. If I have a cold, I think it will be better soon. If I’m going through a rough time, I think I just have to live through it and things will look up. I think attitude is highly underrated and can’t be underestimated,” Si added.

5. Get appropriate medical care

He also said, “I’ve benefited from the scientific progress we’ve made in treating health conditions and what I would call the miracles of modern medicine. We’ve always been careful and had routine appointments with doctors.”

6. Do work you find meaningful

Si said, “When I was working, I was editor of the Asbury Park Sunday Press, a privately owned paper. It was a challenging and rewarding job as a journalist for more than 40 years. And I still do a little writing to keep busy.”

7. Be a little lucky

He concluded, “I believe I’ve been a lucky guy in a 79-year relationship with my wife. Though she’s had some memory problems since falling several times, she always remembers to exchange kisses before we go to sleep at night. Living with someone you care about, who also cares about you, really helps.”

Madonna on ICU Coma, Her Brother’s Death, Relationship with Motherhood

Madonna is approaching the first anniversary of the death of her younger brother, Christopher Ciccone, who died this past October at the age of 63. At times, the singer’s relationship with her sibling was tumultuous, leading to periods during which they rarely spoke. During her first podcast appearance, on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose, Madonna details a spiritual encounter she had while in a medically-induced coma (during her four-day hospitalization in the ICU in June 2023 for a serious bacterial infection) that led to her reconnecting with Ciccone.

“I was almost there on the other side and I had a conscious moment and my mother appeared to me and she said, ‘Do you want to come with me?’ And I said, ‘No,’” Madonna said. “My assistant was in the room with me, but I was still unconscious, but she heard me say, ‘No.’ And then when I did eventually wake up, I realized that the ‘No’ was about me needing to forgive and make good with people that I still held grudges against.”

Soon after, Madonna wrote a song about her brother and another about forgiveness. The unreleased tracks, titled “Fragile” and “Forgive Yourself,” center around the idea of accountability and responsibility. “We have to forgive others but we also have to forgive ourselves and stop beating up on ourselves about things, choices we’ve made in the past that haven’t worked out for ourselves or other people,” she said.

For a while, Madonna added, she pushed off forgiving with Ciccone because she assumed she’d have more time to do so. “Your ego dances around it like, ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah, I’ll get to it. I’ll get to calling him up or talking to him or being his friend or helping him,’” she said. “But eventually I did. And, I know I’m being mysterious, if someone you love deeply betrays you and does something that shows that they have no consciousness in that moment that they made that choice to do that, it’s a bitter pill for me to swallow.”

She continued, “For my brother, I didn’t speak to him for years, years, and years. It was him being ill and reaching out to me and saying, ‘I need your help,’ and me having that moment like, ‘Am I going to help my enemy?’ That’s how it felt. And I just did. I felt so relieved. It was such a load off my back, such a weight that was removed, baggage that I could put down to finally be able to be in a room with him and holding his hand — even if he was dying — and saying, ‘I love you and I forgive you.’”

Raj Kapoor Was In Coma & Dilip Kumar Kept Crying, “Maaf Kar De Mujhe” Yearning For A Last Wish

It was on the unfateful day of June 2, 1988, when the Showman of Indian Cinema, Raj Kapoor, breathed his last. The superstar passed away after struggling for his life. But in the last few days, his health deteriorated, and he slipped into Coma. While his family was by his side in these last days, his best friend Dilip Kumar was also informed about his condition.

Dilip Kumar, who was in Pakistan for an event, rushed back to Delhi to be by his best friend’s side. The superstar, however, did not know that this was the last time he was meeting his ‘Laale Di Jaan’, a title he gave him endearingly.

Dilip Kumar could not believe that Raj Kapoor had slipped into Coma, and he tried every bit to revive him. To bring him back to consciousness, the Naya Daur actor reminded the Sangam superstar of all that their childhood held in Pakistan.

Taking him down memory lane, Dilip Kumar held Raj Kapoor‘s hand and talked about their ancestral home in Peshawar, the kebabs, and how he had brought kebab ki khushboo with him from Pakistan just for his friend.

Dilip Kumar’s Heartfelt Goodbye To Raj Kapoor: A Friend’s Last Wish Left Unfulfilled

In Dilip Kumar’s autobiography, Rishi Kapoor himself wrote a note about his father’s last meeting with the Devdas actor. Both of them are helpless, one lying on the bed and the other trying to make him live just to fulfill that one wish together!

Rishi Kapoor, in his note, wrote, “I remember very clearly how he (Dilip Kumar) walked into the room where Papa was lying unconscious and drew a chair close to the bed on which he sat holding Papa’s hand. He began telling Papa, ‘Raj, aaj bhi main der se aaya. Maaf kar de mujhe..‘ I know you like to be in the limelight and have all the attention on you. Enough is enough. Get up, sit, and listen to me. I have just come back from Peshawar, and I have brought the aroma of chapli kebabs to temp you. You and I will go together and will walk through the bazaar, like we used to and enjoy the kebabs and rotis. Raj, wake up and stop acting, I know you are a great actor.”

Concluding the note Rishi Kapoor wrote a hearbreaking good bye from a friend to another friend, “…(Dilip Kumar said) Raj, mainu le jana hai tusi Peshawar de ghar de aangan wich.’ His voice was now choking and tears were brimming over from his eyes as he spoke.“

With that breaking voice, a last wish was left unfulfilled, and while Dilip Kumar looked one last time at Raj Kapoor, everyone in that hospital room knew that the Showman was not returning to them ever again.

Raj Kapoor breathed his last on June 2, 1988.
