Chetan Bhagat On Being Called ‘Male-Fantasy Writer’: ‘If I Wrote Creepily, My Stories Would Collapse’

by jummy84 November 4, 2025
written by jummy84

Chetan Bhagat, one of India’s most popular and polarising authors, has once again found himself addressing long-standing criticism — that his books are written from an overwhelmingly male perspective. In a recent conversation, the author of 12 Years: My Messed-Up Love Story opened up about being labelled a “male fantasy” writer and defended his style, intent, and accessibility-driven storytelling.

In his interview with Pinkvilla, Chetan Bhagat was asked about trolls who claimed his latest novel romanticises immaturity rather than exploring a nuanced emotional relationship. The author, visibly exasperated by the perception, responded sharply: “How do I write a book then? Do I co-author the book with a woman? What is this nonsense? I have been writing for 21 years. If the story is not mature, it will not work. If I handle it in a creepy, vulgar way, it will just collapse.”

The writer — who has been both celebrated and ridiculed for his bestselling novels — admitted that he faces trolling long before his books even reach readers. “Even before I announce the book, people decide what they are going to say about it,” he said, pointing out that much of the criticism stems from preconceived notions about who he is and the kind of stories he tells.

Chetan Bhagat sees a hypocrisy in being stereotyped

Bhagat also reflected on what he sees as hypocrisy in the way audiences approach gender representation in writing. “That’s classic stereotyping. These people tell me that I stereotype, but they are stereotyping me,” he said, addressing those who assume that a middle-aged male author writing about younger female characters must be projecting personal fantasies. “They say that if a 45-year-old man writes about a 21-year-old woman, it must be a fantasy. But it is not my fantasy,” he clarified.

Expanding on his challenges as a writer, Bhagat highlighted how misunderstood authors can be in India’s literary ecosystem. “It’s very difficult to be in the writing profession. I am very sensitive to people who write. There is no money. There is no fame. You work for years and you get nothing,” he said, stressing that writing requires discipline and emotional vulnerability that readers often overlook.

He also explained why he keeps his language and storytelling simple — a deliberate choice, not a limitation. “My final presentation is very simple because I have to reach the common man,” Chetan Bhagat said. “I talk in Hindi and present myself as a grounded boy. The way I talk, the way I mention tea — it makes people think ‘isko baja bhi sakte hai.’ And I’m successful, so they see me as someone who doesn’t deserve it because they have struggled in their writing careers.”

In a moment of candid self-awareness, Bhagat added with a laugh, “If I weren’t Chetan Bhagat, I would have hated Chetan Bhagat.” The statement summed up his acceptance of his polarising identity — both admired by millions for democratising English fiction in India, and dismissed by purists who question his literary depth.

Bhagat also shared a rare moment of validation that came from one of Indian cinema’s most respected lyricists and writers, Gulzar. “One person who routinely sends me messages, talks about my columns, and praises my work is Gulzar sahab,” Bhagat revealed with pride. “One of the first things he told my mother was, ‘I wish I could write like your son.’ Nobody who is doing so well and is as successful ever says that.”

This endorsement, Bhagat implied, matters more than the countless anonymous critics online. For him, appreciation from a writer of Gulzar’s calibre underscores the universality and emotional resonance that even the simplest of words can hold.

Chetan Bhagat’s journey as a writer has been both meteoric and controversial. Since his debut with Five Point Someone in 2004, he has carved out a unique space in Indian publishing — not as a literary novelist, but as a storyteller for the masses. His novels, often exploring love, ambition, and middle-class aspirations, have become pop-culture milestones and Bollywood blockbusters. Five Point Someone inspired 3 Idiots; One Night @ The CallCenter was adapted as Hello; The 3 Mistakes of My Life became Kai Po Che!; 2 States mirrored his own inter-community marriage; and Half Girlfriend was turned into a romantic drama by Mohit Suri.

Despite his mass appeal, Bhagat continues to battle perceptions that his work lacks depth or gender balance. But his defence remains consistent: he writes stories that speak to ordinary people, not literary elites. His choice of words, tone, and characters is designed for connection — not for critical validation.

In an age where social media outrage often shapes public perception, Bhagat’s resilience stands out. Whether one sees him as a commercial craftsman or a flawed provocateur, he remains one of the few writers capable of sparking national debate with every release. As he puts it himself — “If I were really as immature or sexist as they say, my books wouldn’t have lasted 21 years.”

Lola Young has cancelled all of her planned appearances “for the foreseeable future” after recently collapsing on stage.

Lola Young has cancelled upcoming gigs

The 24-year-old star collapsed during a performance in New York and she’s now taken to social media to announce an indefinite hiatus from the stage.

Lola wrote on Instagram: “I’m going away for a while. It pains me to say I have to cancel everything for the foreseeable future. Thank you for all the love and support. I’m so sorry to let anyone down who has bought a ticket to see me, it hurts me more than you know.

“Obviously you will be entitled to a full refund.

“I really hope you’ll give me a second chance once I’ve had some time to work on myself and come back stronger. Love you all, Lola x. (sic)”

Lola previously cancelled a gig in Washington, D.C. a day after collapsing onstage in New York.

The singer suffered a medical issue while singing Conceited at the All Things Go Music Festival at Forest Hills Stadium, New York City, on Saturday (27.09.25) and was taken backstage by medical staff, but she later reassured fans she was fine.

In a statement posted on Instagram, she wrote: “I’m sorry to confirm that I won’t be playing All Things Go in DC today.

“I love this job and I never take my commitments and audience for granted so I’m sorry to those who will be disappointed by this.

“I hope you’ll all give me another chance in the future. Thank you to all those who listen and care. To all the people that love to be mean online, pls give me a day off. (sic)”

After her collapse in New York, Lola told fans she was “doing OK”, writing in a social media update: “Hi, for anyone who saw my set at All Things Go today, I am doing OK now. Thank you for all of your support, Lola xxx. (sic)”

Speaking before the medical incident, Lola told the crowd in New York that she’d had a tough couple of days.

She said: “Sometimes life can really make you feel like you can’t continue, but you know what, today I woke up and I made the decision to come here, and I wanted to be cool … and sometimes life can throw you lemons, and you just gotta make lemonade.”

8-Year-Old Passes Away After Collapse Accident

by jummy84 September 30, 2025
written by jummy84

A Missouri family is grieving their 8-year-old just weeks before what would have been his ninth birthday. Cortez Williams Jr., lovingly known as CJ, passed away within hours of a children’s swing set collapsing on him. The death shocked his loved ones, mainly because CJ didn’t have much external injury when they first freed him from the playset. He would’ve turned nine years old in October 2025.

More Details About The Swing Set Incident

The St. Louis County Police Department released a report on September 22 about what happened to CJ. It cited the date and time of the swing set accident as the day before, around 6 p.m. Officers from the city’s North County Precinct responded to a call for sick service. When they arrived at the home on the
11300 block of Larimore Road, Cortez Williams Jr. was found unresponsive.

During their initial investigation, officers learned 8-year-old CJ was “playing on a backyard swing set when it collapsed,” per the press release. After the set collapsed, it trapped Williams Jr. under a crossbar. Family members ultimately freed the child, who reportedly “only appeared to have minor injuries. Later, CJ became unresponsive. After being transported to the hospital, doctors pronounced him dead.

His cause of death will be determined after an autopsy. However, the local Bureau of Crimes Against Persons is already investigating the death as accidental. Last week, CJ’s loved ones were reportedly arranging his homegoing service.

Father Of Cortez Williams Jr. Speaks Out

WUSA9 also caught up with Cortez Williams Sr., who gave an emotional interview about losing his son during what was supposed to be a chill Sunday afternoon. The father told the outlet he had dropped his 8-year-old off at his mother’s house that morning. Then, several hours later, he got the shocking FaceTime call from his daughter. On it, she was allegedly crying and saying CJ wasn’t responsive. At the time, Williams Sr. said the only thing going through his mind was returning to his son, given that he was out of town for work.

After other family members freed CJ, his dad said he didn’t show any apparent signs of injury, such as bleeding. He had “a little scratch on his stomach,” but that was about it. His behavior appeared normal, aside from expressing sleepiness.

“They said he was talking, responding, asking for water and something to eat,” Williams Sr. said. “The only thing he kept saying was that he wanted to go to sleep.”

While CJ napped, his mother made him something to eat, per Williams Sr. About an hour after that, things worsened, the dad said. When he woke up and walked around, he collapsed. Still, he had no external injuries and kept asking for water and something to eat. “…So they gave him some water, and she was finished cooking the food, and they said he was quiet for a while,” his father told WUSA9. “Next thing you know, they said he wasn’t responding anymore.”

Dad Shares Message About Kids & Minor Injuries

During his interview, Cortez Williams Sr. made it a point to share an important message with other parents. He warned them to take their children to the hospital for “any little thing” that happens.

“The risk of not taking them is…you see the pain I’m in, it’s a bad risk, I don’t want anyone to have to go through this. I’m trying my best, but it’s hard,” CJ’s dad said.

Sadly, Williams Sr. didn’t make it home in time to see his son alive again. “It’s pain that’ll never go away,” the father told WUSA9. “Because of his age… it’s just something that’ll never leave.” The dad remembers his 8-year-old as a joyful kid who loved scary movies and food. He was looking forward to starting soccer.

Like Williams Sr., the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has also issued warnings about home playground equipment, such as swing sets. The agency reports that about 50,000 kids go to the ER for related injuries every year. Most of the injuries are reportedly falls. However, in some cases, kids have died when equipment tips over or breaks, trapping a child(ren).

Why Did the French Government Collapse? The Meaning – Hollywood Life

The French government collapse is making headlines this week as the chaos in France’s parliament continues. Prime Minister François Bayrou — who took office in December 2024 — was ousted by lawmakers in an astounding vote, leaving the country’s government up in the air as French President Emmanuel Macron must find a replacement. So, what does this mean for France and for the United States?

Learn more about France’s political crisis and what it means going forward for Americans.

What Does a Government Collapse Mean for a Country?

A government collapse happens when a nation’s central institution breaks down, and the country is indefinitely left with no government to lead. This typically happens during periods of economic meltdowns and political crises.

— Gouvernement (@gouvernementFR) September 8, 2025

Why Did the French Government Collapse?

France’s government collapsed because Prime Minister Bayrou was voted out. He had only been in office for about nine months. Bayrou was ousted by the national assembly with a total of 364 votes against him, and 194 in his favor. The total number of votes needed to jettison the PM is 280.

Bayrou pushed for an unpopular €44 billion ($51 billion USD) savings plan for 2026, which would have thrown out two public holidays in France. Per the Élysée Palace, Macron has to select a new PM in place of Bayrou.

Signs of Bayrou’s downfall were visible in the months leading up to the vote as he tried to convince French lawmakers that cutting public spending was a smart plan to repay the nation’s debts. Clearly, he miscalculated, and he must submit his resignation as France’s PM tomorrow, Tuesday, September 9, 2025.

Who Will Be the New French Prime Minister?

There is no clear pick for Macron to replace the PM with. His possible prospects are currently unknown.

How Does the French Government Collapse Affect the U.S.?

As of now, France’s government collapse won’t hit the United States too hard, but it could over time. Both countries have worked together on numerous issues and policies over the past few centuries. Amid the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War, France and America have had an extra burden placed on their respective governments.
