Ying Yang Twins Talk New Favs And Strip Club Classics.

As veterans of the Crunk era, the Ying Yang Twins have established themselves as party starters. This fall, they revived that energy at the Red Bull Dance Your Style World Final, where competitors delivered their best freestyle moves hoping to come out on top. Behind the scenes, the duo channeled a mellow energy, juxtaposed against the hype of their hits such as “Salt Shaker.

“I like DaBaby, Latto, GloRilla, Lil Baby,” shared Kaine with VIBE when asked about some of their favorite artists of the new generation. “They got nice songs,” he added with D-Roc’s agreement.

As the conversation continued, the brothers in rhyme explained respectfully that although they do enjoy some of the music, not every release meets their personal standards.

“I’ma a hard music critic,” Kaine continued. “I can’t lie about music. This is a God given talent.”

“Everybody who doing their thing right now, that’s basically what we listen to,” added D-Roc. “If it sound good, I’ll play it.”

“A lot of these songs to me still aren’t hit records,” countered Kaine. “I’m just being honest… What happens when we come on? They hit the floor. Some music today is just fly on the wall music…drive through music…when you pull away from the drive through, you’re still hungry for more.”

Turning the energy back up, the Atlanta representatives continued to lay out their favorite strip club anthems, naming tracks from 2 Live Crew, SoundMasterT and of course, themselves.

Rafael Toral Is Murdering the Classics

by jummy84 October 24, 2025
written by jummy84

Rafael Toral’s most recent album, 2024’s Spectral Evolution, consisted of a single 42-minute track, divided into loose, flowing movements, but based on the chord changes of the Gershwin chestnut “I Got Rhythm.” On his follow-up, Traveling Light (October 24), the Portuguese guitarist works smaller, refashioning six jazz standards using his “space instruments”— electronic contraptions of his own invention that modulate feedback, distort signals, and utilize other instruments like the theremin to create eerie tones, transforming them into something decidedly nontraditional.

As on Spectral Evolution, Toral radically decreases tempos, letting chords elongate into languorous drones that sound more like electric organ than guitar. It’s a simple yet effective trick that’s been used by countless bands—if you slow things down enough, even the simplest melody and most basic rhythm turn strange, complex, and compelling. Yet Toral has got more on his mind than a good gimmick; the way he elaborates and expands upon the hypnotic structures of these decelerated oldies never fails to surprise or intrigue.

Toral picked his tunes shrewdly, with an ear for the esoteric but never descending into pure obscurity. Three are associated with Billie Holiday: “Easy Living,” “Body and Soul” and “God Bless the Child” (the latter co-written by her), two with Miles Davis: “You Don’t Know What Love Is” and “My Funny Valentine.” One, “(In My) Solitude,” is a Duke Ellington number. Except for “Valentine” and “Child,” most are probably not well-known outside of the jazz community, but all have been performed by legendary artists and left a mark in the popular subconscious. Written in the 1930s and ’40s, these songs share a sort of bone-deep Depression-era desolation, a mix of sultry ache, bluesy insouciance, and modernist lassitude, the sort of wee-hour existentialism that disappeared after the boom times began and America went suburban.

It’s a vibe that’s usually cloaked in nostalgia, but in Toral’s hands, it grows feral. Stretched out like molasses, the streetwise dream of “Easy Living” becomes surreal and disorienting, especially with the high-pitched, froglike chirp that kicks it off and which recurs throughout. Ellington’s “Solitude,” a gently dissonant reverie, retains a wistful sophistication even as its elegant harmonic sensibility dissolves into a welter of drones, accordionlike pulses, and synthetic, birdlike calls. With Traveling Light, Toral isn’t so much evoking or exploring the past as he is reimagining it, turning it into something not exactly new, but different; not exactly alien, but disarmingly unfamiliar.

Besides stretching these songs, Toral also stretches himself. He summons some remarkable tones from his instruments, from the glassy, echo-laden strum of “You Don’t Know What Love Is” to the blistered warps that open “God Bless the Child.” He also finds more room to play guitar that sounds like guitar, giving “My Funny Valentine” a tactile weight that feels weirdly organic among the shimmering ribbons of drone and electronic warbles. Most impressively, he occasionally lets in additional musicians, with a line from a clarinet, tenor sax, flugelhorn, or flute suddenly manifesting among Toral’s manufactured labyrinths. It’s a testament to the uncanny magic of Traveling Light that, for a few seconds, these unadorned analog instruments from jazz’s heyday sound just as unreal as the processed guitar and altered electronics, while the muted microchip roar of Toral’s technology feels like the oldest love song, whispered in the bittersweet dark, full of indomitable heartbreak and irrepressible human longing.

I Swear Bought By Sony Pictures Classics

by jummy84 October 24, 2025
written by jummy84

“I Swear,” the British indie film about Tourette’s Syndrome campaigner John Davidson that has already been a hit with audiences and critics in the U.K., has been bought by Sony Pictures Classics.

SPC acquired all rights to the film for the United States, Latin America, most of Eastern Europe, Turkey, Southeast Asia, Portugal and South Korea.

Written and directed by BAFTA nominee Kirk Jones (“Waked Ned Devine,” “Nanny McPhee”), “I Swear” first premiered in Toronto to critical acclaim and earlier this month launched in U.K. and Irish cinemas, opening at third spot behind “Tron: Ares” and “One Battle After Another.” According to distributor StudioCanal, it also set a new record as the most highly rated film by cinemas audiences since records began in the U.K. —  above “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Top Gun Maverick” and “Parasite” in Comscore PostTrak exit polls.

Alongside Robert Aramayo (“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”) as the lead, the film’s supporting cast includes three-time BAFTA nominee Maxine Peake (“Say Nothing,” “The Theory of Everything”), BAFTA winner Shirley Henderson (“Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy,” “Harry Potter”) and Cannes best actor Award winner and Golden Lion winner Peter Mullan (“War Horse,” “The Magdalene Sisters”).

Set in 1980s Britain, “I Swear” charts Davidson’s Tourette’s diagnosis at the age of 15 years old, following him throughout his troubled teens and early adulthood exploring this little known and entirely misunderstood condition, along with his attempts to live a “normal” life against the odds. The production worked closely with the Tourette’s community, casting individuals who live with Tourette’s, and collaborated with a Tourette’s charity.

The film was produced by Jones, Georgia Bayliff and Piers Tempest for One Story High and Tempo Productions. Cindy Jones and John Davidson serve as executive Producers.

“I am thrilled to partner with Sony Pictures Classics on ‘I Swear,’” said Jones. “Their history, vision, ambition and passion for what is a very special project for us, feels like a perfect fit for U.S. and additional territories.”

Added Tempest, “We are delighted that ‘I Swear’ is resonating so much with audiences in the United Kingdom and can’t think of better partners than Sony Pictures Classics to bring the film to U.S. audiences and beyond.”

The deal was negotiated between Sony Pictures Classics and Bankside Films on behalf of the filmmakers.

“I Swear’ is one of those extraordinary, one-of-a-kind, true-to-life movies, emotionally engaging, funny and compelling,” said Sony Pictures Classics. “Many will identify as ‘I Swear’ explores conquering an entirely misunderstood condition, by a young man and the people around him. Directed to perfection by Kirk Jones with amazing performances by Robert Aramayo and stalwarts Maxine Peake, Shirley Henderson and Peter Mullan, ‘I Swear’ will be adored by audiences everywhere.”

Bono, The Edge Revisit U2 Classics At Guthrie Prize Ceremony

Bono, The Edge Revisit U2 Classics At Guthrie Prize Ceremony

by jummy84 October 23, 2025

U2’s Bono and the Edge dipped into their back catalog during a six-song set last night (Oct. 21) as part of their Woody Guthrie Prize ceremony at Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa, Ok., and even unveiled some lyrics for an in-progress song that may appear on their next album.

The duo rattled off “Running To Stand Still,” “Mothers of the Disappeared,” “Sunday Bloody Sunday,” “One,” “Pride (In the Name of Love)” and “Yahweh” in addition to a cover of Guthrie’s “Jesus Christ,” and later sang some a capella lines from the Beatles’ “A Hard Day’s Night” when accepting the award.

The Woody Guthrie Prize is given annually to artists who “best exemplify Guthrie’s spirit and work by speaking for the less fortunate through music, film, literature, dance or other art forms and serving as a positive force for social change.”

“Bob Dylan really did bring us to the place where the song was an instrument to open up worlds,” Bono said. “And the world of Woody Guthrie, I wouldn’t have entered if not for Bob.” He added, “America is the greatest song still yet to be written. The poetry is there but it’s still being written … don’t imagine it will continue to be extraordinary on its own, that if you fell asleep and woke up in 20 years, the world would be fairer or freer. It won’t. That’s not the way it works.”

“Our favorite protest songs always had a sense of vision, something to aim for,” said the Edge. “You don’t talk about the darkness — you make the light brighter.”

During a protest song-oriented discussion with producer T Bone Burnett, Bono admitted, “you can’t write a song to order,” but then proceeded to recite lyrics from an unfinished song about the late Palestinian activist Awdah Hathaleen: “one father shot / three children crying / if there is no law / is there no crime / if there is no hope / what’s there to rhyme / history is written / one life at a time.”

It was the first concrete evidence of material intended for the follow-up to 2017’s Songs of Experience, a release date for which has not been announced.

U2 hadn’t set foot in Cain’s Ballroom since performing there on April 4, 1981. The band returned to Tulsa again in 1983 and 2018 and had previously joked that its members were looking “forward to legally buying their own pints this time around.”

Bono, Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. join past Guthrie Prize recipients including Pete Seeger, Mavis Staples, Joan Baez, Bruce Springsteen and 2024 honoree Tom Morello.

Cuco Covers Cumbia Classics During Homecoming Show in Los Angeles

The Chicano star is currently on tour in celebration of his album, Ridin’

Cuco turned Mexican Independence Day into a cumbia celebration Monday night at the Greek Theatre. The Chicano soul star lit up the sold-out Los Angeles venue in green, white, and red, as fans swayed and sang along to his unexpected dive into cumbia classics.

Midway through the show, Cuco loosened things up with his cumbia-inspired 2021 one-off “Under the Sun” before surprising the crowd by pulling out the güira for a rendition of “Llorar,” the standard by Los Socios del Ritmo. The energy jumped again when he transitioned into “La Negra Tomasa,” the Caifanes anthem that had the audience on its feet.

“I gotta tell you how many cumbia parties I’ve been to,” Cuco said onstage. “Y’all, I never realized how hard it is to sing that song, ‘Llorar,’ it’s a lot of tongue twisters for me. But that is fun as fuck to play. I hope you guys enjoyed that shit.”

The star took the time to celebrate some of the deluxe standouts on Ridin’, making way for “Sin un Corazón” from the extended project. Earlier in the evening, Cuco welcomed Jean Carter to perform their collab “Bossa No Sé,” and also a rendition of “My 45” from his recent project, Ridin, which Rolling Stone lauded last month.

“His blissed-out performances flow by perfectly, and the tunes stay with you. More than just historical cosplay, Ridin’ makes an old-school sound feel joyfully present,” read a review of the album.

Cuco just started his Ridin tour last week in Oakland and is set to tour the United States, stopping in cities such as Phoenix, Albuquerque, Denver, Dallas, Nashville, Kansas City, and New York City through the end of October.

dEUS will play their classic albums ‘Worst Case Scenario’ and ‘In A Bar, Under The Sea’ in full on a UK and European tour next year to celebrate their 30th anniversaries.

The influential Belgian rockers will celebrate their early years on the 19-date tour across the continent, though they will “not necessarily” be playing the two albums – released in 1994 and 1996 respectively – front to back.

The tour will kick off in Lille, France on March 12 before taking in cities including Paris, Brussels and Berlin. There is only one UK date on the tour, taking place at London’s O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire on March 17. They will then sign off in Oslo on April 11.

Tickets are on sale now – you can buy yours here and see the full list of dates below.

dEUS’ ‘Worst Case Vs In A Bar’ UK and European tour dates are:

MARCH
12 – Lille, FR, L’Aeronef
13 – Paris, FR, L’Olympia
15 – Dijon, FR, La Vapeur
17 – London, UK, O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire
19 – Brussels, BE, Forest National
21 – Nijmegen, NL, De Vereeniging
24 – Cologne, DE, Burgerhaus Stollwerck
25 – Berlin, DE, Metropol
27 – Frankfurt, DE, Batschknapp
28 – Fribourg, CH, Fri-Son
29 – Milan, IT, Magazzini Generali
31 – Vienna, AT, Arena

APRIL

3 – Amsterdam, NL, Paradiso
6 – Groningen, NL, De Oosterpoort
7 – Hamburg, DE, Markthalle
9 – Copenhagen, DK, Amager Bio
10 – Stockholm, SE, Debaser
11 – Oslo, NO, Rockefeller

Breaking out in the early ’90s, dEUS eluded definition with their experimental style of rock music, blending elements of folk and jazz. They also became notably more prolific than many other acts from their home country of Belgium.

They have remained active since, other than a hiatus in the early 2000s. They released their first album for 10 years, ‘How To Replace It’, in 2023.

The band last toured in 2019 to mark the 20th anniversary of their cult album ‘The Ideal Crash’.
