Ella Halikas says Christy flopped ‘because Sydney Sweeney wasn’t half naked’

Ella Halikas thinks Sydney Sweeney’s Christy flopped at the box office because she wasn’t “half naked”.

Sydney Sweeney plays a boxer in her new movie

The 28-year-old actress plays a former professional boxer in Christy, the new biographical sports drama film, but Ella thinks the film has flopped because Sydney doesn’t look “hot and beautiful” in the movie.

The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue model told TMZ: “All I will say is that I think that she had branded herself, and people know of her, in a lot of her roles for showing skin, showing the ta-tas, feeling hot and beautiful.

“And I feel like when you’re more covered, and you’re not in that role, they’re kind of like, ‘We don’t know what to make of it’ right?’”

Ella observed that Sydney’s fans see her as a “beautiful woman on screen where they’re gonna see that body”.

She added: “If they don’t, and it’s kind of a different role for her, I feel like maybe you miss the crowd or audience that way.”

Earlier this week, Sydney insisted that she doesn’t “just make art for numbers”.

Alongside a carousel of photos from the film, Sydney – who also co-produced the David Michod-directed movie – wrote on Instagram: “i am so deeply proud of this movie.

“proud of the film david made. proud of the story we told. proud to represent someone as strong and resilient as Christy Martin. this experience has been one of the greatest honors of my life.

“this film stands for survival, courage, and hope. through our campaigns, we’ve helped raise awareness for so many affected by domestic violence. we all signed on to this film with the belief that christy’s story could save lives.

“thank you to everyone who saw, felt, and believed and will believe in this story for years to come. if christy gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded. so yes I’m proud. why? because we don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact. and christy has been the most impactful project of my life. thank you christy. i love you. ‘Christy’ Doesn’t Deserve the Box Office Smackdown It Got on Twitter

by jummy84 November 11, 2025
written by jummy84

In a weekend in which “Predator: Badlands” was far and away the top movie in America, bringing in $40 million domestic (when it was projected for just over half that), the bigger box office conversation on social media this weekend centered around a film that didn’t even crack the domestic Top 10.

That movie was the Sydney Sweeney boxing biopic “Christy,” which debuted to just $1.3 million. That is a bad number in most ways you might want to spin it, but there was one narrative that really took hold that’s easy to fight back. On Sunday, Twitter user Jonathan observed that it’s one of the worst openings for a movie that debuted on over 2,000 screens ever. To find that stat, you’ll need to scroll to the bottom of the All Time Records tab on Box Office Mojo and look at this chart, and you’ll see “Christy” ranks No. 12.

Joachim Trier at the 'Sentimental Value' Los Angeles premiere held at the DGA Theater Los Angeles, California.

The assertion went viral, bolstered by the ongoing controversy about the recent American Eagle ad featuring Sweeney’s “Great Jeans.” What’s more, Sweeney has had two other movies that fizzle at the box office this year: the Lionsgate crime movie “Americana” and Ron Howard’s “Eden,” in which she’s part of an ensemble and not the main star. It’s a big shift after Sweeney bolstered the surprise box office of films like “Anyone but You” and “Immaculate.”

Black Bear, which is a brand-new distributor that made “Christy” its very first release, both financed and distributed “Christy” and is doing so for a responsible budget of $15 million. It will take a hit, but the distributor also sold the international rights to “Christy,” which can help to mitigate the box office losses.

But saying “Christy” had one of the worst openings ever based on the number of screens it played on is a weird, cherry-picked stat. Even if you were to switch tabs on that very chart and look at movies that opened on over 2,500 or 3,000 screens, you’ll see some other films, even some from this year, that opened in a similar ballpark as “Christy” and had worse per-screen-averages. And it’s nowhere to be found among the top titles if you filter to over 600 theaters, which Box Office Mojo still labels as “Wide.”

“It definitely does feel cherry-picked. What release date are we talking about? What’s the competition?,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior analyst at Comscore. “For films like this or ‘The Smashing Machine,’ they’re not going for box office, they’re going for artistic freedom and are character-driven films that are not trying to be blockbusters.”

Dergarabedian explains there are a litany of other factors that could’ve played into why “Christy” didn’t connect. Did the average moviegoer think Sweeney was unrecognizable when they saw the trailer? Do casual audiences even know who the film’s subject Christy Martin is? Could a movie like “Predator: Badlands” have sucked up all the oxygen for other new releases? Would it have performed better opening in the spring? Even a movie like “Die My Love,” starring Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson, was another starry, adult drama that only made $2.8 million from virtually as many screens. It’s hard out there for drearier movies for grown-ups.

You could make the case that “Christy” shouldn’t have opened on near as many screens as it did and instead went with a platform release in order to slowly build buzz. Dergarabedian points out that had “Christy” done just that, it wouldn’t be the first movie that died on the vine before it even had a chance to go wide. Distributors often grab additional screens because they can and because there’s a willingness from exhibitors to play them, which was the case here. The cost of a digital print is minimal compared to a film print. And if you’re a brand-new distributor like Black Bear, why not take a little added risk?

Sweeney too isn’t taking the disappointment to heart and, in a post on Instagram on Monday, said there are some more important things than box office.

“Thank you to everyone who saw, felt, and believed and will believe in this story for years to come. If ‘Christy’ gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded,” she wrote. “So yes, I am proud. Why? Because we don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact,” Sweeney said. “And ‘Christy’ has been the most impactful project of my life.”

Sydney Sweeney trained relentlessly for Christy role

by jummy84 October 5, 2025

5 October 2025

Sydney Sweeney spent three months training for her role in Christy.

Sydney Sweeney trained hard for her role in Christy

The 28-year-old star plays female boxing trailblazer Christy Martin in the upcoming movie and overhauled both her diet and exercise regime during the time she had to prepare physically for the part.

In a Q+A at Hamptons International Film Festival, Sydney recalled: “Every morning I would weight train for an hour, then I would go and do boxing for three hours, and then another hour of weight training at night. I did that every single day for three months, with a nutritionist, so eating a bunch of food and protein shakes and supplements. I, in that span of time, gained, like, 35lbs.”

Sydney explained that Christy was “very involved” during the making of the film and felt that her presence was invaluable as she was keen to perfect her portrayal of the boxer.

The Echo Valley actress said: “She kind of became my best friend. Having her with us was a really powerful experience.

“I’ve never had the person who I’m portraying watch me. You’re never really sure what they’re thinking. But as it went on, I just wanted her there the entire time because I was able to study her and listen to her and have her thoughts and opinions there whenever I needed.”

Sweeney added: “I try to lose myself completely for a role, so I try not to carry any of my own stuff into their life. But I honestly learned so much from Christy that I applied to myself.”

The Euphoria star previously stated that she was determined not to use a stunt double for any of the boxing scenes featured in the movie.

Sydney said: “Every single fight you see, we are actually punching each other. We are going full force.

“I always believed that you would not be able to make it feel real if it’s a stunt double or if it’s faking the hits.”

Christy Martin became the most well-known female boxer in the US during the 1990s and was also the victim of an attempted murder by her abusive husband James Martin in 2010 – with Sweeney shocked that her story hasn’t been told on a “global” level.

She told Vanity Fair: “I was blown away that her story wasn’t more known on a universal, global level because it’s just one of the most harrowing and inspiring women that I’ve ever met in my entire life.”

“Oh boy ladies & gentlemen, have I got a treat for you!” Black Bear Pictures has unveiled the official trailer for Christy, hot on the heels of its successful premiere at the 2025 Toronto Film Festival last week. Christy is now set for a US release in theaters nationwide starting in November later this fall. “What does it take to become a legend?” The sports movie tells the story of of Christy Martin, the most successful female boxer of the 1990s. From the TIFF description: “Featuring a career-best performance from Sydney Sweeney, the latest from David Michôd (Animal Kingdom) chronicles groundbreaking boxer Christy Martin’s fierce story of self-actualization in the face of terrifying adversity…” They also add: “Dealing with themes of misogyny, domestic violence, and sexual identity, the film does justice to Christy’s journey by being frank about the obstacles she overcame.” Critics have been saying Sweeney is awards worthy in this, with a strong emotional lead role as Christy. The cast also includes Ben Foster, Merritt Wever, Katy O’Brian, Ethan Embry, Jess Gabor, Chad Coleman, Bryan Hibbard, and Gilbert Cruz. It looks like yet another cliche boxing movie like so many others before it, but it also seems to throw some strong punches of its own. Take a look.

Here’s the main official trailer (+ poster) for David Michôd’s movie Christy, direct from YouTube:

Christy Martin (Sydney Sweeney) never imagined life beyond her small-town roots in West Virginia—until she discovered a knack for punching people. Fueled by grit, raw determination, and an unshakable desire to win, she charges into the world of boxing under guidance of her trainer and manager-turned-husband, Jim (Ben Foster). But while Christy flaunts a fiery persona in the ring, her toughest battles unfold outside it—confronting family, identity, and a relationship that might become life-or-death. Based on remarkable true events, Christy Martin’s story is one of resilience, courage, and the fight to reclaim one’s life. Christy is directed by Australian filmmaker David Michôd, director of the films Animal Kingdom, The Rover, War Machine, and The King previously, as well as a few shorts. The screenplay is written by Mirrah Foulkes and David Michôd; story by Katherine Fugate. Produced by Kerry Kohansky-Roberts, Teddy Schwarzman, Brent Stiefel, Justin Lothrop, David Michôd, Sydney Sweeney. This just premiered at the 2025 Toronto Film Fest this month. Black Bear Pictures releases Michôd’s Christy movie in US theaters on November 7th, 2025.

Christy Martin is widely regarded as one of the most influential female boxers in history. Nicknamed “The Coal Miner’s Daughter,” she broke barriers in the 1990s by bringing women’s boxing into the mainstream, eventually earning a spot in the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Beyond the ring, Christy’s story of survival after a near-fatal attack by her then-husband has inspired countless fans. Now, her remarkable life is the subject of the upcoming biopic Christy, starring Sydney Sweeney.

Learn more about the trailblazing fighter below.

She Earned the Nickname “The Coal Miner’s Daughter”

Christy was born Christy Salters in the coal camp of Itmann, West Virginia, to Joyce and Johnny Salters, and grew up in the nearby town of Mullens. Reflecting on her upbringing, she told ESPN in 2020, “Itmann was a coal camp. A tiny little speck of a nothing town. Mountains and hills and everyone you knew, they’re either miners or railroaders or teachers. I love West Virginia, I love the people there. But I never for one day thought I was going to stay.”

Her upbringing and family background earned her the nickname “The Coal Miner’s Daughter,” a title that stayed with her throughout her trailblazing boxing career.

She Became Women’s Boxing’s First Mainstream Star

In the 1990s, Christy broke through in a male-dominated sport, quickly becoming one of the first women to gain mainstream recognition in boxing. She was the first female fighter signed by legendary promoter Don King, who placed her on the undercards of major events, including Mike Tyson bouts. Known for her power, Christy racked up 49 wins, 32 by knockout, making her one of the most successful female boxers of all time.

As she once explained to ESPN, her goal was never to be seen just as a woman in the ring: “When people left, I wanted them to say, ‘Wow, that was a good fight!’ Not, ‘That was a good woman’s fight.’ I didn’t want to be a good woman fighter. I wanted to be the best.”

She’s in the Hall of Fame

Christy’s accomplishments earned her induction into both the International Boxing Hall of Fame (2020) and the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame. Her legacy has been credited with paving the way for current stars like Claressa Shields and Katie Taylor.

She Survived a Near-Fatal Attack

In 2010, Christy was stabbed and shot by her then-husband and manager, James Martin, in a brutal attack that nearly ended her life. Despite her injuries, she managed to escape and survived after emergency surgery. Since then, she has spoken openly about her ordeal to raise awareness of domestic violence, later sharing her story in interviews and documentaries, including ESPN’s 30 for 30: The Fight of Her Life.

Her Life Is the Subject of a New Movie

Christy’s inspiring and harrowing journey has now been adapted into the upcoming biopic Christy, with Sweeney in the title role. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2025 and is set for a November 7, 2025 theatrical release. The movie not only showcases Martin’s rise as a fighter but also delves into her personal battles, highlighting her courage inside and outside the ring.

Actor Sydney Sweeney undergoes a jaw-dropping transformation to play celebrated boxing champion Christy Martin in her upcoming release Christy. The actor dropped the official trailer of the film on Thursday, days after the world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, where she earned rave reviews. Many even predicted that Sydney could very well earn an Oscar nomination for her performance in the film. David Michôd has directed the film.

Sydney Sweeney plays former boxer Christy Martin in the film.

About the trailer

The trailer begins with Sydney being introduced into the world of boxing as a newcomer. In no time, she is punching her way to grand success, winning titles and setting her life up with manager-turned-husband, Jim (Ben Foster). But things do take a hard turn, when it seems that she no longer has the same control over her game as well as her life. Sydney’s physical transformation and emotional resilience form the highlight of the trailer.

About the film

The official synopsis of the film reads, “Christy Martin (Sweeney) never imagined life beyond her small-town roots in West Virginia — until she discovered a knack for punching people. Fueled by grit, raw determination, and an unshakable desire to win, she charges into the world of boxing under the guidance of her trainer and manager-turned-husband, Jim (Ben Foster).”

It adds, “But while Christy flaunts a fiery persona in the ring, her toughest battles unfold outside it — confronting family, identity, and a relationship that just might become life-or-death. Based on remarkable true events, Christy Martin’s story is one of resilience, courage, and the fight to reclaim one’s life.”

Reacting to the trailer, a fan commented, “Sydney for her first Oscar, lets go!” Another said, “Yeah Christy looks quite great! Pretty hyped for this one!!” A comment read, “She looks so different here! Can’t wait to see.”

The film tells the story of Martin’s rise in the 1990s and charts her personal experiences, including her husband’s attempted murder in 2010. It is produced by Black Bear, Anonymous Content, Votiv, Fifty-Fifty Films, and Yoki. Also starring Ben Foster and Merritt Wever, the film is set to be released theatrically on November 7.

Sydney Sweeney sheds light on training regime for boxing biopic ‘Christy’

Sydney Sweeney has shed light on the prep she did to embody boxer Christy Martin in the new biopic Christy.

The film charts the career of American boxer Martin, who rose to prominence as one of the most successful female athletes in the sport in the ‘90s and ‘00s, later enduring and surviving domestic violence and an attempt on her life by her husband and former trainer, who is portrayed by Ben Foster in the film.

Speaking at the film’s premiere at the Toronto Film Festival on Friday (September 5),  Sweeney touched on her much-discussed transformation into the film’s titular boxer, which has seen her gain over 30 pounds in preparation for the role.

Sweeney told the crowd that she trained for around three months with a boxing coach before filming, and also worked with weight trainers and a nutritionist. “I trained two to three times a day, every day, and then while I was filming, I trained, as well,” said Sweeney.

As for packing on muscle, director David Michôd said there was “a lot of Chick-fil-A” involved. Sweeney agreed, adding: “A lot of Smuckers, a lot of milkshakes, a lot of protein shakes. But it was incredible being able to completely embody such a powerful woman.”

Martin, who consulted on the film, said her boxing persona felt very separate from her genuine personality, which she felt Sweeney did an “awesome job” balancing.

“Christy the boxer was just the persona, very bombastic and very egotistical, but that is not who I am. I am actually very shy and reserved,” she explained. “I have these two different parts of my personality, which I think is why Sydney Sweeney does this awesome job.

“She got to be this totally different person that none of you expected. She wasn’t the beautiful, sexy Sydney. She was the tough, rugged Christy in this movie.”

Scheduled for a November 7 release in the US, there is no UK release date announced as yet for Christy, although it will be one of the gala screenings at this year’s London Film Festival on October 17.

Elsewhere at the film festival, the actor made headlines after emphasising that she would not be talking about the recent American Eagle controversy, saying: “The movie’s about Christy, and that’s what I’ll be there to talk about.”

It comes after the Euphoria star drew criticism for her involvement in the brand’s jeans campaign, which many online have accused of having racially charged undertones. Both Lizzo and Doja Cat have criticised the campaign, while Sweeney was heckled at a separate film premiere recently, with an onlooker shouting: “Stop the ad, that is being racist!”

American Eagle released a statement in early August, saying: “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story”. The commercial received praise from US President Donald Trump, who also expressed delight at the news that Sweeney was registered as a Republican supporter at the last election.

Recently, Sweeney hit back at critics of another of her endorsements, pointing out what she perceives as the hypocrisy of people criticising her for selling soap infused with her own bathwater.

Sydney Sweeney is stepping into the boxing ring—or more accurately, punching it—for what might be her most physically and emotionally demanding role yet. In Christy, the new biopic premiering at TIFF, the Emmy-nominated actress portrays legendary boxer Christy Martin. Sweeney, 27, committed fully to the role, even literally delivering real punches alongside her co-stars. “Every single fight you see, we are actually punching each other. We are going full force,” she told Vanity Fair—and yes, she emerged with bruises and concussions to prove it.

She’s also making her case beyond the ring: “I was blown away that her story wasn’t more known on a universal, global level,” Sweeney said of Martin, calling her “one of the most harrowing and inspiring women that I’ve ever met in my entire life.” That emotional weight is underscored by Sweeney’s physical transformation—training for months, gaining more than 30 pounds, and stepping fully into Martin’s shoes.

With production wrapped and excitement growing over Sweeney’s transformative performance, many fans are eager to know more about the film, the true story behind it, and when it will hit theaters. Find out more about the Christy Martin boxing biopic below.

Who Is Christy Martin?

Martin is a groundbreaking American professional boxer who rose to fame in the 1990s, earning the nickname “The Coal Miner’s Daughter.” She’s widely credited with bringing women’s boxing into the mainstream, becoming the first woman signed by promoter Don King and fighting on high-profile cards. Martin won the WBC women’s super welterweight title and retired with a record of 49 wins, 7 losses, and 3 draws.

Beyond her victories, Martin’s story resonated with fans for her courage outside the ring as well. In 2010, she survived a near-fatal attack by her then-husband and manager, James Martin. She later testified against him in court, and today she uses her platform to advocate against domestic violence while continuing to mentor young fighters.

What Is ‘Christy’ Starring Sydney Sweeney About?

The film—directed by David Michôd and co-written with Mirrah Foulkes—chronicles Martin’s rise in the 1990s, her role in breaking barriers for women’s boxing, and the deeply personal struggles she endured behind the scenes. It doesn’t shy away from her survival story after the 2010 domestic violence attack that nearly cost her life, making the biopic both a sports drama and an intimate portrait of resilience.

Michôd described the project as “a wild mix of inspiring underdog sports-world story and personal saga,” praising Sweeney’s dedication: “Sydney trained her butt off to play the part. The beauty of Sydney is that she turned up to work every day with her tail wagging, ready to go. No matter how tough it was, she was like a ray of sunshine.”

Sweeney transformed physically and emotionally for the role, gaining over 30 pounds and committing to a grueling daily training regimen. “I loved it,” she told W Magazine. “I had about three and a half months of training. I started eating. I weight-trained in the morning for an hour, kickboxed midday for about two hours, and then weight-trained again at night for an hour.”

Is the Christy Martin Biopic Based on a True Story?

Yes. The film is a true-to-life portrayal of Martin’s journey, from her barrier-breaking success in professional boxing to her survival and recovery after enduring a brutal domestic violence incident.

When Does ‘Christy’ Come Out?

The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September 2025, where Sweeney’s performance drew immediate attention. According to Deadline, a wider theatrical release is slated for later in 2025, though exact distribution details are still to be announced. Filming wrapped in late 2024.
