Diwali 2025: How many diyas to light on Dhanteras, Choti Diwali and Badi Diwali for prosperity and positivity

Diwali 2025: Diwali, also known as Deepawali or the Festival of Lights, is one of India’s most celebrated Hindu festivals, marked with joy, lights, and festive cheer. It falls on the 15th day of Kartik in the Hindu lunar calendar, on the Amavasya Tithi, and this year, it will be observed on Monday, October 20, 2025. The celebrations span five days, beginning with Dhanteras and ending with Bhai Dooj. (Also read: Dhanteras 2025: Why you should buy broom on Dhanatrayodashi? A central Diwali tradition is lighting diyas, small clay lamps, which symbolise the victory of light over darkness. Hindu customs provide guidance on the number of diyas to light each day, with variations for Diwali, Choti Diwali, and Dhanteras. Keep reading to find out the proper way to honour each day with diyas this festive season. (Also read: Diwali 2025 calendar: When is Choti Diwali, Diwali, Bhai Dooj? Dhanteras

On Dhanteras, it’s customary to light 13 diyas, each carrying a unique meaning and placed with intention. Diyas are often positioned at the entrance to welcome prosperity and guests, in the kitchen to symbolise health and abundance, and in the puja room to honour the divine and seek blessings. Each lamp radiates positive energy, filling the home with light for the festive season.

Choti Diwali (Kali Chaudas)

During Choti Diwali, it is considered auspicious to light 14 diyas in a thoughtful arrangement. Place 11 diyas around the edge of a plate with a four-faced diya in the centre, which should be lit first, followed by the others. Some also add a touch of sugar or sweets to the diyas, symbolising a wish for sweetness and prosperity in life, enhancing the blessings of the festival.

Diwali (Badi Diwali / Lakshmi Puja)

On the main day of Diwali, it’s customary to light numerous diyas across the home and courtyard, symbolising hope for a bright and prosperous future. Many also light diyas on balconies, spreading joy and warmth to neighbours and passersby.

Remember, these are general guidelines, not strict rules. Some families may light more or fewer diyas depending on personal traditions. What truly matters is lighting diyas with a pure heart and a sincere wish for goodness, positivity, and light in life.

Safety tip: Always ensure diyas and candles are never left unattended so you can enjoy a safe and joyful celebration.

Is Choti Diwali on October 19 or 20 this year? Know correct date of Narak Chaturdashi 2025 amid the confusion

Diwali 2025 date: Diwali (also known as Deepavali) typically falls between mid-October and mid-November, depending on the lunar calendar. Diwali is a significant festival in the Hindu calendar, celebrated with great fervour in India and other parts of the world. Also read | Diwali 2025 calendar: When is Diwali? Check dates for Dhanteras, Choti Diwali, Bhai Dooj and all 5 days of Deepawali

While Diwali is a grand celebration with lighting diyas (earthen lamps), fireworks, decorations, gift-giving, and family gatherings, Choti Diwali is relatively less elaborate. (Made using Gemini AI)

Narak Chaturdashi, also known as Choti Diwali, is a Hindu festival celebrated on the 14th day of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik. It’s observed a day before Diwali and is associated with Lord Krishna’s victory over the demon king Narakasura, symbolising the triumph of good over evil.

When is Choti Diwali 2025 and what are the timings?

This year, as per Drikpanchang.com, Narak Chaturdashi, or Choti Diwali, will be celebrated on October 20, Monday, and the tithi (auspicious timing) for the Chaturdashi is up to 03:44 pm, followed by Amavasya (Krishna Amavasya).

The Chaturdashi tithi begins at 1:51 pm on October 19, and since the worship is done at night, some people are also observing Choti Diwali on October 19 instead of October 20. Also read | Diwali 2025 city-wise timings: When will Delhi, Mumbai, Gurugram, Bengaluru and other cities celebrate Diwali

How is Choti Diwali different from Diwali?

Narak Chaturdashi or Choti Diwali marks the beginning of the main Diwali festivities, emphasising the importance of spiritual growth and self-reflection. While Diwali is a grand celebration with lighting diyas (earthen lamps), fireworks, decorations, gift-giving, and family gatherings, Choti Diwali is relatively less elaborate.

Unlike Diwali, which is associated with the Goddess Lakshmi, Choti Diwali is associated with Lord Krishna or Lord Shiva. Both festivals involve worshiping deities, offering prayers, and performing rituals. People often clean and decorate their homes, exchange gifts and sweets, and spend time with family and friends. Traditional sweets and snacks are an integral part of both celebrations.

Shraddha Kapoor Announces Choti Stree at Thamma Trailer Launch

by jummy84 September 27, 2025
written by jummy84

Shraddha Kapoor’s exciting announcement during the trailer launch of the upcoming Maddock Horror Comedy Universe film, Thamma, has excited the fans. The event, which released the trailer for Thamma, which is releasing this Diwali on October 21, brought together its lead stars – Ayushmann Khurrana, Dinesh Vijan, the director Aditya Sarpotdar. However, the real buzz was generated by the universe’s original star, Shraddha Kapoor.

Shraddha Kapoor, who started the universe with the blockbuster Stree, was a special presence at the event. Addressing the crowd, she announced a brand-new project that will serve as a thrilling build-up before the much-awaited Stree 3.

This new project is titled Choti Stree, an animated film that will be released in theatres. The film is set to delve into the backstory of Shraddha Kapoor’s character, finally giving fans the answers they’ve been craving about the mysterious and powerful character. The film’s producer, Dinesh Vijan, explained the concept, stating that Choti Stree will end with a scene from Stree 3, bridging the two films and directly leading into the live-action sequel.

The producer mentioned that Choti Stree will release six months before Stree 3, meaning fans won’t have to wait too long to learn more about Stree’s past.

The Maddock Horror Comedy Universe, which began with Stree, has successfully grown with films like Munjya and Bhediya. The addition of Thamma marks a new chapter, introducing new faces and exploring different elements of Indian folklore. Dinesh Vijan highlighted the franchise’s mission to draw from India’s own “rich folklore.” He pointed out that Thamma, for instance, explores the concept of Betaal, figures deeply rooted in Indian culture, moving away from looking to the West for inspiration.

Dinesh Vijan also confirmed that Thamma will introduce two more characters, who will feature in films released after it, before eventually leading up to the sequel. He said that the universe acts as a “box where we cage a few monsters,” and that the growing success is thanks to the industry becoming “proud of who we are” and finding unique stories within India’s history.

The announcement of Choti Stree clearly shows the makers are focused on building a deep, interconnected world. This animated feature is a bold step, aiming to cater to a broader audience, including children and families, while adding depth to the original character of the universe.
