RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil — The Rio International Film Fest will feature China as its country focus in next year’s edition, as part of the 2026 China-Brazil Cultural Year, said Walkiria Barbosa, Rio Fest’s executive director and int’l marketing.

The governments of the two countries announced in Nov. 2024, during a visit of China’s president Xi Jinping to Brazil, that the  2026 China-Brazil Cultural Year will feature a broad programming element, currently in preparation.

“China is the largest film market in the world. Our intention is to have in the 2026 edition of Rio Fest the main Chinese film production companies, streamers and exhibitors for a big business meeting and screening of Chinese films,” Barbosa told Variety.

The China Media Group (CMG) made a presentation Oct. 3 in RioMarket, the business section of Rio Fest, with the presence of the company’s Latin America chief bureau Zhu Boying, as well as of China’s consul in Rio, Tian Min.

Following the presentation, CMG premiered the feature “Shenzhou 13,” the country’s first 8K film shot in space, which was theatrically released nationwide in China Sept. 5.

The film depicts the routine of astronauts Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping, and Ye Guangfu on the Shenzhou-13 mission, which was launched Oct. 16, 2021. The crew spent a total of 183 days in orbit, setting a new record for the longest continuous spaceflight by Chinese astronauts.

The film reveals awe-inspiring cosmic vistas and glimpses of daily life in orbit, captured with 8K ultra-high-definition cameras. Most of the footage was filmed by astronauts, with Wang’s perspective guiding the story.

The main Brazil-China co-production now in course is produced by Rio-based LC Barreto and CCTV Animation, a subsidiary of CMG. They are developing a TV animation series and an animation feature, both with Panda HoHo, a well-known character starring in other CMG productions.

“Hoho & The Tropical Sound Clash” is a 3D animated series aimed at preschoolers. The series is due to have four seasons, each with 13 episodes running 10 minutes in length.

Series showrunner Joao Amorim told Variety the first season is expected to open in the second half of 2026 on free-to-air TV channels TV Cultura in Brazil and CCTV Animation in China. Zhang Fan is the series’ animation director.

In the series, Panda HoHo will form part of a trio of Brazilian animals, with a Golden Lion Tamarin, a symbol of Brazilian biodiversity, and Capy, an adventurous capybara. In each episode, the trio will embark on adventures across Brazil, discovering unique biomes, cultural traditions and important lessons about environmental preservation and the power of collaboration.

The second LC Barreto-CCTV project, “Amazonika – The Origin” is a 3D animated feature about the recreation of the Amazon Rainforest, presented as an ancient link between Asian and Brazil’s Indigenous cultures. Panda HoHo will help Zo, a young man who can communicate with nature, and Nika, a bold princess warrior, to restore harmony in a world on the edge of collapse.

“We are working with two Indigenous Brazilians as consultants for the projects. Benki Piyãko is of the Asháninka original people and Zezinho Yube is of the Huni Kuin people,” Amorim said.

China Selects Nanjing Massacre Film ‘Dead to Rights’ as Oscar Entry

China has chosen Shen Ao’s “Dead to Rights” as its submission for the best international feature film category at the 98th Academy Awards.

Written by Shen Ao, Zhang Ke, and Xu Luyang, and set against the backdrop of the 1937 Nanjing Massacre and drawing from documented historical events, “Dead to Rights” follows A Chang (Liu Haoran of the “Detective Chinatown” franchise), a postman who assumes the identity of a photo developer to survive the Japanese occupation. Operating from within the walls of a Japanese-controlled studio, he covertly shelters Chinese soldiers and civilians in an act of quiet resistance.

The film is produced by Furuo Qing of “The Wandering Earth” franchise fame. Niu Vision Media and Echelon Studios released the film in North America in August.

“Dead to Rights” opened in China on July 25 and has grossed more than RMB3 billion ($415 million). It led the local box office for 16 consecutive days over the summer.

China has yet to win the international feature Oscar. The country has scored two nominations in the category to date, with Zhang Yimou’s “Ju Dou” (1991) and “Hero” (2003). Hong Kong, which submits separately, has earned three nominations: Zhang Yimou’s “Raise the Red Lantern” (1992), Chen Kaige’s “Farewell My Concubine” (1994) and Derek Tsang’s “Better Days” (2021).

Last year, China submitted Fang Li’s documentary “The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru,” which was disqualified by the Academy for not meeting language requirements.

The Oscar international feature shortlist will be announced on Dec. 16 and the final five nominees will be announced on Jan. 22.

Jackie Chan Back on Top:

Jackie Chan has once again proven his enduring star power. His latest thriller, The Shadow’s Edge (produced by iQIYI Pictures), stayed at No. 1 at the China box office for a second weekend, pulling in RMB189.1 million ($26.3 million). That brings its cumulative total to an impressive RMB878 million ($121.9 million), according to Artisan Gateway.

The film not only dominated locally but also topped the global chart, as confirmed by Comscore.

What Is The Shadow’s Edge About?

Directed by Larry Yang, the thriller casts Jackie Chan as Wong Tak-Chung, a retired Macau surveillance expert drawn back into the field to investigate a high-tech heist.

Teaming up with rookie cop He Qiuguo (Zhang Zifeng), Wong faces off against criminal mastermind Fu Longsheng, played by Tony Leung Ka-fai. Together, they must dismantle a gang that threatens the fragile balance of Macau’s underworld.

The film blends Chan’s iconic presence with sleek crime-thriller storytelling, proving that he remains as relevant to action cinema today as ever.

Box Office Competition:

The weekend box office in China was stacked with major titles, yet The Shadow’s Edge held its ground.

Nobody (Shanghai Animation Film): $15.2 million, cumulative $202.1 million.

Dead to Rights (China Film): $8.2 million, cumulative $401.4 million.

I Swear (Taopiaopiao): $7.4 million debut.

Final Destination: Bloodlines (New Line): $4.5 million, cumulative $18.1 million.

In total, weekend receipts reached $76.4 million, pushing China’s 2025 year-to-date box office tally to $5.457 billion, up 18.4% from the same period last year.

Why Does It Matter?

At 71, Jackie Chan continues to prove his global box office appeal. The Shadow’s Edge is not only a local hit but also a global chart-topper, reaffirming Chan’s ability to headline large-scale action films.

With strong competition on the charts and still maintaining its number one position, the film highlights both Chan’s adaptability and his long-standing influence in cinema. For audiences worldwide, it serves as a reminder that Jackie Chan remains one of the most bankable and iconic stars in the industry.
