Charlie Sheen Opens Up About Past “Liberating” Sexual Encounters with Men

Maybe it’s that he’s getting older and wiser (or he’s got some promotional work to do?), but Charlie Sheen has been in an earnest, sharing mood as of late. In addition to a forthcoming Netflix documentary, and his corresponding memoir, the Two and a Half Men star recently had heaps to say in an interview with PEOPLE (via Entertainment Weekly).

Perhaps the most striking revelation in the piece is Sheen’s acknowledgment of his relationships and sexual encounters with men. The lead-up to the documentary marks the first time he has even broached the subject, describing the process of opening up as “fucking liberating.” He added, “A fucking piano didn’t fall out of the sky. No one ran into the room and shot me.”

Sheen said these same-sex relations began while he was still regularly using drugs, including crack cocaine. (Sheen has been sober since mid-2017.) He explained that these encounters, paired with his ongoing struggles to remain sober, generated a lot of internal tension and existential pondering.

“That’s where it was born, or sparked,” Sheen said. “And in whatever chunks of time that I was off the pipe, trying to navigate that, trying to come to terms with it, ‘Where did that come from? Why did that happen?’ — and then just finally being like, ‘So what?’ Some of it was weird. A lot of it was fucking fun, and life goes on.”

There were other, equally insightful tidbits revealed, including:

His HIV status: Sheen first revealed his positive status during a November 2015 appearance on the Today show. As to what caused him to make the announcement, Sheen said that in years prior, house guests or sexual partners would snap pictures of his medications as a form of blackmail. Despite his drug use and other concerns, however, Sheen went on to say, “I do know for a fact that I never passed it [HIV] on.”

The 2011 tour: In the lead-up to his 20-city “My Violent Torpedo of Truth / Defeat Is Not an Option” live show, Sheen made the now-infamous comments about having “tiger blood.” However, Sheen told PEOPLE that the tour “didn’t have to happen,” adding that “Somebody should have tapped out for me and said, ‘This is a bad idea.’” He added, “I’ve never found ‘exploitation’ as a good treatment protocol.”

His friendship with Jon Cryer: In spring 2011, Sheen’s personal issues caused him to be written off Two and a Half Men. The fallout severed Sheen’s relationship with friend/co-star Cryer, and Sheen believes that his actions even put Cryer “in the line of fire” (via Us Magazine). Cryer does appear in the doc, but was recruited for the production by the director and not Sheen himself, who says he has no way of directly contacting his former friend. “I wrote to him and I said, ‘Hey, thank you for your contributions, and I’m sorry we didn’t connect personally,’” Sheen said of a message sent to Cryer, later adding, “So if you’re reading this, Jon, DM me your new number!”

His working/personal relationship with Chuck Lorre: Unlike Cryer, Sheen has since reunited with Two and a Half Men co-creator Chuck Lorre. The mend took place in time for Sheen to appear on Lorre’s 2023 comedy series Bookie. At the time, Lorre told Variety, “I was nervous, but almost as soon as we started talking, I remembered, we were friends once,” adding, “When he came to the table read of that episode, I walked up, and we hugged. It was just great.”

The Netflix documentary, aka Charlie Sheen (due out September 10th), gives additional perspective into Sheen’s tumultuous life through the lens of candid interviews with friends/family. That includes Denise Richards, Heidi Fleiss, Sean Penn, Ramon Estevez, Brooke Mueller, Chris Tucker, and even his drug dealer, Marco.

Meanwhile, his memoir, The Book of Sheen (out September 9th), was written entirely by the actor and covers his childhood as the son of a Hollywood star (Martin Sheen), his early rise to fame, and his stint on Two and a Half Men “coping with the chaos of divorces and drugs.”

Charlie Sheen has opened up about his sexual encounters with men for the first time.

Charlie Sheen opens up about sexual encounters with men

The 60-year-old actor revealed he first started sleeping with men in the midst of his drug addiction and said: “some of it was weird. A lot of it was f****** fun”.

Speaking on Good Morning America, he explained: “That’s what started it. That’s where it was born, or sparked. And in whatever chunks of time that I was off the pipe, trying to navigate that, trying to come to terms with it – ‘Where did that come from?… Why did that happen? – and then just finally being like, ‘So what?’ So what? Some of it was weird. A lot of it was f****** fun, and life goes on.”

However, he admitted he was extorted by people who knew his secret.

He said: “It did come with a tremendous amount of extortion. And so at the time, I was just like, ‘Alright, let’s just pay to keep it quiet. And just hope it just stays over there, make it go away, you know? Make it go away’.

“I just need to be free of that … and then see how the world feels if people know that stuff. Because I’ve written a story all these years about, ‘Oh jeez, if I ever reveal that, then this has to be how I’d be dealt with, how I’d be treated, how they’d feel.'”

Thrice-married Charlie also revealed he is currently single but looking for love again.

Charlie was married to Donna Peele from 1995 to 1996, Denise Richards from 2002 to 2006 and Brooke Mueller from 2008 to 2011.

He shares daughters Sami, 21, and Lola, 20, with Richards, 16-year-old twins Max and Bob with Mueller and has daughter Cassandra Estevez, 41, with his high school girlfriend.

He said: “My romantic life is as uneventful as it possibly could be, and it’s been that way for a long time. It wasn’t even by choice, but the girls [Sami and Lola] moved in, and then when they moved out, the boys moved in, and there wasn’t enough room in the car. Plus, I spent so much time and energy chasing that for so long. I had to get to a place where I could be alone, but not lonely.

“But I am open to love again. Probably not marriage, though!”

Charlie also talks about his exploits in upcoming memoir The Book of Sheen and Netflix documentary aka Charlie Sheen.

When asked in the documentary how it feels to be talking for the first time about having sex with men, Charlie answered: “Liberating. It’s f****** liberating… [to] just talk about stuff. It’s like a train didn’t come through the side of the restaurant. A piano didn’t fall out of the sky. No one ran into the room and shot me.”

“What do you want to remember?” Kanopy has debuted the official trailer for a film titled How to Shoot a Ghost, a brand new short film created and directed by the distinct filmmaker / writer Charlie Kaufman. His latest since the film I’m Thinking of Ending Things in 2020. His new film is a 27 minute short that is premiering at the 2025 Venice Film Festival underway right now. The original intro at the fest: “Following two recently dead people who wander Athens as ghosts, the film explores mortality: as it interacts with the urge toward belonging, and our human desire to leave something, some trace, behind; and our twin desire for self obliteration. Street photography, historical footage, and old home videos interlaced with the body of the film, underscore how the ‘now’ will become the ‘then’, how those of us living today become the ghosts of tomorrow.” The short stars a nearly unrecognizable Jessie Buckley (also in Hamnet) with blue hair and a nose ring. Along with Josef Akiki as the other ghost. Shot on location in Athens, Greece. This looks quite good. Not just a simple story about ghosts wandering around a city, it’s much deeper than that. Check it out.

Here’s the main official trailer for Charlie Kaufman’s short film How to Shoot a Ghost, from YouTube:

Intro via Venice: “Two newly dead young people meet in the streets of Athens, amid the pulsing cityscape and the ghosts of history. One a translator, the other a photographer, they were outsiders in life; in death they struggle with the residue of their longings and mistakes. They wander the city together, finding consolation in the difficult beauty of existence and its aftermath.” How to Shoot a Ghost is a short directed by iconic Oscar-winning American writer / filmmaker Charlie Kaufman, director of the films Anomalisa, Synecdoche New York, and I’m Thinking of Ending Things previously, and writer of scripts for Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. The screenplay is written by Eva H.D. Produced by Isabelle Deluce & Emily McCann Lesser. The film premieres at the 2025 Venice Film Festival in the Out of Competition section. No other release dates are set yet – stay tuned for updates. Who’s interested?

Charlie Kaufman’s new short film, How to Shoot a Ghost, just got its first trailer. The 27-minute film is produced by Unmade, a production company that Halsey appears to have co-founded with her manager, Anthony Li, and her fiance, Avan Jogia. Unmade is credited alongside several other producers in the program for Venice Biennale, where the film is premiering. Watch the trailer below, via Variety.

Jessie Buckley and Josef Akiki star in the film, which has a screenplay by Eva H.D. and centers on a pair of outsiders, a translator and photographer, as they materialize in a realm of the afterlife that is also Athens, Greece. Rufus and Martha Wainwright have covered Lou Reed’s “Perfect Day” for the film. Kaufman and Eva H.D. also collaborated on the 2023 short Jackals & Fireflies.

The How to Shoot a Ghost trailer arrives on the same day that Halsey releases an anniversary edition of her debut album, Badlands. She’ll begin the Back to Badlands Tour in October.
