Leicester’s Mattioli Arena plays host to the 15th edition of the Champion of Champions.

Sixteen tournament winners from the past year will take to the table at the non-ranking event over the next week in the hope of making it to Sunday’s final.

The competitors are split into four groups, with each group’s fixtures completed in a day and the group winners progressing to Friday and Saturday’s semi-finals.

Ronnie O’Sullivan may be the most decorated player in Champion of Champions history but there is no place for the Rocket at the 2025 event.

That’s not to say the tournament is lacking in stars, however, as Mark Williams returns to defend the 2024 title he won in Bolton 12 months ago, while the likes of Judd Trump, Kyren Wilson, Neil Robertson, and Zhao Xintong are also in action.

The good news for snooker fans is that the whole tournament will be available for free on TV and online.

Marshall team up with Music Venue Trust to champion 60+ local artists in grassroots venues

by jummy84 November 3, 2025
written by jummy84

Marshall has teamed up with the Music Venue Trust (MVT) to roll out an initiative championing grassroots music – check out all the details below.

In collaboration with MVT, Marshall is set to deliver a nationwide series of more than 20 gigs. Dubbed Marshall Nights, each will shine a spotlight on emerging talent, with the tour featuring over 60 rising artists.

In a bid to support emerging talent as well as the local scenes that support them, performances held at grassroots venues across the country will kick off at Brighton’s Green Door Store, and hit Cardiff’s Fuel, Glasgow’s Rum Shack and Sheffield’s Yellow Arch.

The move builds on Marshall’s history of protecting grassroots music. As highlighted in a press release, Marshall co-founder Terry Marshall and his wife Leslie personally donated £100,000 to support MVT’s ‘Own Our Venues’ campaign, itself an effort to protect local music spaces by bringing them into community ownership.

That year, Marshall also supplied backline equipment to more than 20 grassroots music venues.

Speaking about the Marshall Nights, Denzil Thomas, partnerships manager at MVT, said: “Grassroots Music Venues are the lifeblood of the UK’s music ecosystem, they are where artists take their first steps, and where fans fall in love with live music.

“We’re proud to partner with Marshall, a brand that embodies the sound and spirit of live performance, to keep these vital spaces alive.”

Kevin Penney, Marketing Director at Marshall EMEA went on to add: “Marshall was born from the live stage, and that’s where we belong. Grassroots venues are where every great band starts, and we’re proud to help keep those stages alive for the next generation of artists and fans.

“This isn’t just about sound, it’s about community, creativity, and giving back to the music that made us.”

As well as the live shows, Marshall and MVT will collaborate on a series of live sessions, interviews, and behind-the-scenes content which is set to spotlight the artists, venues, and communities that make up the heart of UK music communities.

For more information about the initiative, you can visit here and here.

The push for change across the industry comes as 2023 proved to be “disastrous” and the worst year on record, with 125 grassroots music venues shutting their doors. At the beginning of the year, it was also reported that 70.6 per cent of independent UK acts have never toured, while 84 per cent of unsigned artists simply can’t afford to.

Back in July, historic venue The Royal Albert Hall became the first 5,000+ capacity arena to commit to the levy – which sees £1 from every ticket sold invested back into the UK’s live music scene and helps smaller venues keep their doors open.

A £1 ticket contribution will now be added to all commercial rock and pop concerts at the Hall. This will raise an estimated £300,000 per annum for the LIVE Trust.

A recent Music Fans’ Voice survey showed that 93 per cent of fans agreed that £1 from every arena and stadium ticket should be donated to support the grassroots, and last spring, a government committee of UK MPs joined the call for a levy on arena and stadium gigs – as well as a cut in VAT.

In December, they pushed for concrete measures to be put in place by the end of 2025, and said that if venues do not volunteer to invest back into the grassroots spaces, the government will take action.

Huge names who have been supportive of a £1 ticket levy include Coldplay, Sam Fender and Katy Perry – who have all vowed to donate a portion of their tour revenues to support the grassroots sector.

In May, Wolf Alice‘s Joff Oddie also joined industry leaders at a government hearing and insisted that not enough progress was being made in saving venues and new artists. Then, the month prior, it was reported that UK tour ticket contributions have raised £500,000 for grassroots music venues thanks to artists like Pulp and Mumford & Sons.

Kartik Aaryan reacts to winning Best Actor awards for both Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, Chandu Champion in 2025: It’s surreal…

by jummy84 October 29, 2025
written by jummy84

For Kartik Aaryan, 2025 will always remain one of his most special years, with big film announcements one after the other, and of course, his Best Actor wins: IIFA for Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 and Filmfare for Chandu Champion, both 2024 releases. As HT City catches up with him, the confidence shines through, in both his choices and ambition:

Kartik Aaryan

Winning your first-ever Filmfare Best Actor award for Chandu Champion – for a new-generation star like you, did the film feel like an ‘experiment,’ and was the win a vindication of sorts?

Honestly, I didn’t look at Chandu Champion as an experiment at all. The moment I heard the story of (India’s first paralympic gold medallist) Murlikant Petkar ji, I was surprised and deeply moved. I felt this was a story of incredible resilience, courage, and self belief; one every Indian should know. I could totally relate to his story and considered myself truly blessed to get the opportunity to portray such an inspirational real-life hero on screen. I will always be indebted to Kabir (Khan, director) sir and Sajid (Nadiadwala, producer) sir for trusting me with this incredible story. Winning the Filmfare Best Actor award feels like a huge validation, not just for me but for the kind of cinema that celebrates real stories and the human spirit.

Is Chatori (your newest pup) a present you have given to yourself for your Chandu Champion win?

(Laughs) Yes, you can say that! Chatori is actually a gift from my mom, and she’s already become everyone’s favourite at home. Bas Katori thodi si insecure ho gayi hai! Abhi tak donon ki dosti nahin hui hai. But still, Katori is very protective of Chatori like a big sister. The house feels livelier with both of them around.

We celebrated Diwali recently, and one is reminded of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 last year, which pretty much set the benchmark for Diwali releases. Do big box office numbers feel like a responsibility, or add pressure?

The love the audience showered on Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 was overwhelming, it felt like a festival inside theatres. The film released alongside another massive franchise, and there was immense anticipation among the audience, trade, and media for both. Together, the two films did a combined business of over ₹800 crores worldwide (BB3 – ₹423.85 cr, Singham Returns – ₹389.64 cr). That year, Diwali genuinely felt like Diwali for the entire industry.

For me, these big box office numbers are very motivating, but more than pressure, I see it as a responsibility, to keep entertaining the audience and living up to their expectations. At the same time, I try not to let the numbers dictate my choices. For me, it’s always about the story and the connection it creates with the audience. If that works, everything else follows.

Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri is set for a New Year eve release. How was it reuniting with (actor) Ananya Panday?

The film has shaped up beautifully, it’s got that perfect mix of heart, fun, and festive energy. We had a blast shooting it, and that vibe translates on screen. Reuniting with Ananya was like picking up where we left off, she was a total live-wire on set. She’s going to surprise everyone. I’m sure the audience will enjoy our chemistry in this fun, refreshing rom-com as Ray-Rumi and all the masti the film brings.

Would you call rom-com ‘your’ genre, given your successful track record in them?

Rom-coms come to me quite naturally, maybe they’re just in my DNA (laughs). I guess the audience also enjoys seeing me in such roles, which makes it more special. But I never want to be confined to one genre. I love exploring different kinds of stories and characters. At the end of the day, I go by what truly connects with me, a story that moves me and one that will entertain the audience, no matter what the genre is.

One hears that you don’t limit yourself to just acting, you get involved in marketing too. There’s even a ‘Kartik Aaryan template’ now. Where did this streak come from?

I think I’m also a bit of a businessman at heart (smiles). For me, it’s equally important to market a film in the best possible way. Today, storytelling doesn’t end with the shoot, how you present it to the audience matters just as much. So I like being involved in all aspects of film making. Thankfully, my producers have been welcoming and yes, even I have heard about the ‘Kartik Aaryan template’ being discussed at films marketing meetings! Trust me, its really encouraging.

Did ‘Jeopardy!’ Champion Tom Devlin Make It Four in a Row?

by jummy84 October 24, 2025
written by jummy84

What To Know

  • Tom Devlin, a three-day Jeopardy! champion with $73,199 in winnings, competed for his fourth consecutive win against Shaan Mishra and Kristina Pohribnij.
  • Despite leading throughout most of the game and making bold wagers on Daily Doubles, Mishra and Pohribnij each held their own against the champ.
  • The Final Jeopardy was a nail-biter as it was anyone’s game.

Would returning Jeopardy! champion Tom Devlin, an attorney from Washington, D.C., keep his hot streak alive for a fourth straight game? Ahead of Friday’s (October 24) new game, he’d racked up an impressive three-day total of $73,199 in winnings, but Friday’s cutthroat game stood to put his reign to the test. If he won, Devlin only needed one more to make it to the Tournament of Champions.

In the game, Devlin went up against management consultant Shaan Mishra from Carmel, Indiana, and stay-at-home mom Kristina Pohribnij from Palatine, Illinois, both determined to dethrone the reigning Jeopardy! champ.

Devlin began the first round by picking “The National Toy Hall of Fame” for $800, which yielded the clue: “Josefina Montoya & Addy Walker are part of the historical characters series of these dolls inducted in 2021.” Pohribnij buzzed in with the correct answer, “What are the American Girl dolls?”

The round’s Daily Double was discovered by Devlin in “Movie Last Lines” for $1,600. Wagering $1,600 on the clue “1987: ‘Grandpa? Maybe you could come over & read it again to me tomorrow’; ‘As you wish,’” Devlin answered correctly with “What is The Princess Bride?,” doubling his score to $3,200.

Before the first ad break, Devlin was in the lead with $7,400, while Pohribnij came in second with $2,600 and Mishra in third place with $600. By the end of the round, Devlin maintained his lead with a total of $9,000, as Pohribnij earned $4,400 and Mishra nabbed $2,600.

In Double Jeopardy, the first Daily Double was discovered by Devlin under “Acronyms” for $1,000. Devil wagered a hefty $5,000 on the answer, “What is ANZAC?,” lifting him to $16,000.

The third Daily Double of the game was found by Mishra under “You “SC” & You “CLA” for $2,000. He bet $5,000 on the clue: “If you don’t fire ’til you see the whites of their eyes, you’re waiting to see this, which covers 5/6 of the eyeball.” With the correct answer of “What is the sclera?” bringing with total to $5,800.

During Double Jeopardy, Devlin answered nine clues correctly, but Pohribnij and Mishra gave him a run for his money, holding their own with several strong responses. By the end of the round, however, it still wasn’t enough to overtake the reigning Jeopardy! champ, as they entered Final Jeopardy with totals of $22,800 for Devlin, $15,600 for Mishra — which moved him to second place — and $10,800 for Pohribnij.

The Final Jeopardy category was “Relics,” with the clue “Missionary William Ellis reported in 1825 that his ‘bones were preserved…& were considered sacred by the people’ of Hawaii.” The answer was “Who was Captain James Cook?” Pohribnij answered incorrectly with “Who is Father Damien?,” to which host Ken Jennings responded, “That makes sense, but I’m afraid it’s not Father Damien, Kristina.” She wagered $5,000, bringing her total to $5,800.

Devlin also incorrectly wrote, “Who is Father Damien?” With his wager of $8,401, his new total was then $14,399, losing the lead. But will he lose the game to Mishra?

Mishra wrote, “Who is Cook???,” the correct answer. With a wager of $0, Mishra kept his total at $15,600, enough to steal the title of “Jeopardy! champ” from Devlin as he won the game.

Martin Scorsese Calls on Streamers to Champion Iranian Cinema

Martin Scorsese Calls on Streamers to Champion Iranian Cinema

by jummy84 October 10, 2025
written by jummy84

After initially being canceled due to visa issues, New York Film Festival audiences on Friday were treated to a warm and wide-ranging conversation between Jafar Panahi and Martin Scorsese. The two titans of cinema took to the stage of the Walter Reade Theater (plus Panahi’s translator) to discuss the Iranian filmmaker’s career, including the many incidents that have forced him to work in secret, plus his latest film, Palme d’Or winner “It Was Just an Accident.”

Panahi’s latest is his first feature since he was incarcerated for several months in 2023 for criticizing the Iranian government. As he has often been forced to do in recent years, Panahi shot the film in secret. The film was inspired by his own experiences in prison.

Anne Thompson, Daniel Battsek, Ryan Lattanzio

At the conclusion of the hour-long-plus discussion, Scorsese asked Panahi what he thinks the future of Iranian cinema is these days, particularly in light of the departure (and exile) of many of Panahi’s contemporaries, such as Bahman Ghobadi and Mohammad Rasoulof.

“After the revolution, these waves of migration, forced migration almost, started as unwanted exile,” Panahi said through his translator. “Many of the actors and directors who were at the height of their careers were forced to leave Iran. … This became more and more and it was really difficult to bear, especially in the first decade after the revolution. … All the backbones of Iranian filmmaking are out. I really miss all those films that they could have made in Iran and that they didn’t. Some of them were able to adapt and stay [there] and work [there], but then there are others like myself who cannot leave Iran.”

As our own Anne Thompson told it best in her recent profile of “It Was Just an Accident” filmmaker and auteur Panahi: “Over the past 15 years, [he] has been imprisoned, blindfolded, interrogated, and put under house arrest with a 20-year ban on making films” by his native country. But on Friday, Panahi was firm: He’s not leaving Iran, and he’s excited about the filmmaking community that endures.

It Was Just an Accident
‘It Was Just an Accident’Neon

“I don’t have the courage and I don’t have the ability to leave Iran and stay out of Iran,” Panahi said. “I have stayed there and I am going to work there. But there is something else I want to add, there are a lot of young filmmakers who are coming and who are making the best films of Iranian cinema in the same style that we are making films. And they are not going to accept censorship whatsoever. And it has become so common that even within the film circles in Iran, everyone is talking about taking these people seriously, people making films clandestinely, whereas there was a time that no one really paid attention.”

He added, “Although we are not concerned about the future of Iranian cinema, we very much would love for all of our friends who left to return one day,” noting that Rasoulof in particular is looking for ways to return to his home country to work.

Scorsese, who is clearly a huge admirer and fan of Panahi and his work, was quick to offer his ideas for how the work of these rising filmmakers can and should be seen: in short, widely.

“This has to be supported by the international distribution [world], I would think, streaming platforms, film festivals, et. cetera, these films have to be supported that way, for us to see them,” Scorsese said. “Streamers have a lot of room, and they throw things that are just not up to the same level [on to their platforms]. There’s no reason why a Criterion, a Mubi, an Amazon, all of that couldn’t show these films.”

The filmmaker and champion of film also noted that the impact could be profound, not just on cinema, but Iran itself.

“I mean, neorealism from Italy in 1945, it gave the heart back to the Italian people that was destroyed during the war and with everything that happened,” he added. “The film themselves, it gave their soul back, through cinema, and that was neorealism. So cinema can be very powerful, everybody can see that. So it’s really getting to see these films. It’s not just putting them on something, and putting them up on, what are they called? Tiles? You have to kind of curate them, so you know where you’re going, you know what you’re looking at.”

Scorsese and his light disdain for streamers’ homepage tiles was greeted with applause, and both Scorsese and Panahi, who ended their chat with a long hug on stage, were met with a standing ovation. This one was worth the wait.

Neon will release “It Was Just An Accident” in theaters in New York and Los Angeles on Wednesday, October 15, with a national rollout to follow.

Dave Bautista & Jack Champion in ‘Trap House’ Action Thriller Trailer

“If we don’t get ’em, the cartel will, right? And they don’t forget…” Aura Entertainment has unveiled the official trailer for Trap House, an action thriller from filmmaker Michael Dowse (of Fubar, Goon, What If, Stuber, 8-Bit Christmas). This is set for a full nationwide release in November just before the Thanksgiving holiday. Dave Bautista leading this story about rogue teens getting into big trouble! Trap House is centered on a team of elite DEA agents whose rebellious teenage children use their parents’ own tactics—surveillance, infiltration, non-lethal weapons, and special intel—to rob a ruthless drug cartel. Along with Dave Bautista, the movie also stars Jack Champion, Sophia Lillis, Tony Dalton, Whitney Peak, Kate Del Castillo, Zaire Adams, and Bobby Cannavale. The tagline within the trailer: “This isn’t a raid. It’s a reckoning.” This is a totally nuts plot – the kids want to get revenge because the death benefits for a DEA agent are bad, so they decide to go rob the cartels all on their own? Yeah um that seems dangerous, remarkably dangerous.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Michael Dowse’s film Trap House, direct from YouTube:
