Jon Wood Is Eliminated in Episode 3 as Cassidy Daniels Shines

What To Know

  • Episode 3 of The Road featured five artists hitting the stage as Keith Urban’s openers in Dallas, Teaxs.
  • They each sang one original song and one cover song, with the audience rating their performances.
  • Urban and Blake Shelton eliminated one contestant from the bottom two at the end of the episode.

After six artists took the stage in Dallas, Texas, on last week’s episode of The Road, it was time for the remaining five to have their turn on the Sunday, November 2, installment of the show. They all opened for Keith Urban with one original song and one cover song.

The audience rated the performances, leaving Urban and Blake Shelton tasked with making another elimination from the bottom two. Scroll down for a recap of the night and to find out who went home.

Jon Wood

Jon Wood performed “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” by Toby Keith for his cover, which Urban said was a “smart choice.” Meanwhile, Shelton noted, “I love when he gets into his Ronnie Dunn sound.”

His original song, “Go Out Like That,” was dedicated to his late grandfather who died from COVID-19. Urban said he picked the right cover song, but Shelton was worried that his vocal on the original wasn’t strong enough.

“I couldn’t tell if he was just emotional or if that wasn’t the right key,” he admitted. “I didn’t feel like he had a grip on it.” Urban agreed that it “felt like an unstable pitch through nerves.” Gretchen Wilson also noticed Jon’s nerves and pointed out that he doesn’t “seem to have the confidence that some of the others do.”

Cassidy Daniels

After she landed in Week 1’s Top 3, Cassidy Daniels knew she had a lot to prove in order to stay on top. Her cover song choice was “Angel From Montgomery,” since her dad had a dream that she performed that song on the show.

“At least in country, I can’t think of anyone to compare her to,” Shelton said, with Urban adding, in agreement, “Not with that thick, creamy tone like that.”

Cassidy’s original was a song called “Heart Shaped Necklace,” which she wrote after an ex gave her a heart shaped necklace on their third Valentine’s Day together and she realized he didn’t know her at all.

“I love her. I swear, there is nobody like her,” Shelton raved. “She writes melodies that she knows she can dig into vocally.” Urban said that Cassidy is the “one to watch right now.”

Forrest McCurren

On the opposite side of that spectrum was Forrest McCurren, who was in the bottom three during Week 1. Since he’s used to performing original songs, Forrest struggled a bit while rehearsing his cover of Jim Croce’s “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown.”

He proved he knew how to work the audience from the very beginning of his set, but Urban noted, “He’s pretty good. As a singer, he has a limited voice. He’s a storyteller, he’s not a singer.”

Wilson said that Forrest would really have to “rely on his wittiness and personality” to win people over, and he did just that. Before performing “Get Lucky Tonight,” he threw out some jokes that had the crowd, as well as Urban and Shelton, cracking up.

“I’d be shocked if he’s in the bottom tonight,” Shelton said, with Urban adding, “Yeah, he’s just so likable.”

Briana Adams

Briana Adams was admittedly a bit out of her league in front of Urban’s crowd, as she’s used to performing acoustically to smaller audiences. Urban and Shelton were a bit perplexed by her decision to sing “Goodbye Time” by Conway Twitty for her cover.

“I’m always fascinated by how people choose a cover,” Urban admitted. “Some people choose them, like, ‘Oh, this is the kind of music I’m going to play,’ but for me, I’d be like, ‘This is how I can get the audience on my side, so then I can do my own song.”

After Briana sang her original song, “Honky Tonk Romance,” the guys were a bit underwhelmed. “The audience knows if you’re not giving it your all,” Urban pointed out. “It’s the approach of, ‘I do this in other bars and they seem to like it…’”

Shelton agreed. “Maybe that’s what it was,” he said. “‘I do this a lot and I sound good on it,’ or whatever, but it’s not always about that, you know?” On the other hand, Wilson thought Briana was “great.”

Billie Jo Jones

Billie Jo Jones was the final performer of the night, but she was still feeling a bit under the weather. It was an emotional night for her, too, as her grandparents, who raised her, were in the audience.

After performing her cover, “Why Haven’t I Heard From You” by Reba McEntire, Billie Jo introduced her grandparents to the crowd and explained that they raised her because her mom is a drug addict who she’s only seen twice in her life. She dedicated her original song, “She Did,” to the duo who stepped up when her own mother didn’t.

“I like the emotion of the second one,” Urban said. Shelton admitted, “I think her original song went over better than her cover. I just think she struggled a bit to get to some of those notes.”

Urban also noticed the hoarseness, but said, “She knows how to lift those choruses up. I think it’s really good.” Billie Jo got emotional after getting off stage and said it was “one of [her] worst vocal performances,” but she got some love from her grandparents, who met her backstage after the set.

Who was eliminated on The Road Episode 3?

After the show, Shelton and Urban told the singers that Cassidy once again got the highest rating from the audience. “You just continue to blow people away with your connection to the audience,” he assured her.

Jon and Forrest were the bottom two. “I think you both had really good moments,” Urban told them. “As far as getting that crowd going, it was hard for you, Jon, because you were the first out of the gate, but I think you held your own. Forrest, I think you’re such a good storyteller. Your original tonight, particularly, with the opening lyrics … any crowd is going to be in.”

In the end, Urban said he felt like Forrest “had the edge” in Dallas, so Jon was eliminated. He kept his head held high, telling Urban and Shelton, “I don’t feel like I necessarily lost at all. I had a good time out here.”

Now, just nine artists are left, and their next stop on the road is Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Kate Cassidy ‘didn’t want to live’ after Liam Payne’s death

Liam Payne’s girlfriend Kate Cassidy “didn’t want to live” following his death.

Kate Cassidy fell into a deep depression after her boyfriend Liam Payne’s death last year

The former One Direction singer tragically died at the age of 31 in October 2024 after falling from a hotel balcony in Argentina and the influencer has revealed that she fell into a deep depression in the aftermath.

Kate told Page Six at a National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) benefit: “I was always just kind of doing nothing and just dealing with that grief and pain, just not wanting to really live my life.”

She explained that it took her several weeks to realise that she needed to restore a sense of structure to her life again.

Cassidy said: “I finally realised, ok, I need to live my life, I need to get up, get out of bed.”

The 26-year-old influencer recalled how she started by setting an alarm to get out of bed one hour earlier each day and began “working out” and “eating clean” and continues to do so for the sake of her mental health.

She said: “I like to always be up early, have a workout class planned, go for a nice walk, eat cleaner. I feel like, for me, being active, always keeps my mind so much cleaner and healthier.”

Kate paid a touching tribute to Liam ahead of the first anniversary of his passing next week as she described him as “the best person I ever met”.

The influencer said: “He lit up any room. He was just so sweet, so funny. I’ve never met anybody like him, and I’m sure I probably won’t ever meet anybody like him in my life.

“In a way, I am actually glad that he’s just going to be that one person. He was the best person I ever met.”

Meanwhile, Liam’s One Direction bandmate Louis Tomlinson described his death as “unjust and frustrating” earlier this week and confessed that the What Makes You Beautiful band’s upcoming 15th anniversary felt “uncomfortable” in the wake of the tragedy.

Speaking to Rolling Stone UK magazine, Louis said: “It was really uncomfortable, actually, the 15th anniversary, because the [collective] feeling to celebrate is as important, if not more important than ever, on behalf of Liam.”

Louis – who was put together in 1D with Liam, Harry Styles, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik on The X Factor UK – admitted marking the band’s formation in the past made him feel “sick of nostalgia”, but doing so earlier this year “brought up those feelings” he’s been dealing with since his friend’s death.

He added: “You know, there’s still a level in my head [where it feels] unjust and frustrating that he’s not with us anymore.

“So, it just brought up those feelings, although I’m still living with them anyway.”

Kate Cassidy, Singer’s Sister Share Tributes

Liam Payne‘s loved ones are honoring him on what would have been his 32nd birthday. On Friday, his sister Nicola shared a heartfelt tribute, recalling the time they spent together on his birthday last year, just two months before his death. His girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, also posted a touching letter to Payne.

“A year ago today, we were so full of hope and excitement for what the years ahead would bring you,” Nicola wrote on Instagram Friday, sharing a carousel of images of the two of them from over the years. “That night, celebrating your birthday with bowling and McDonald’s, we celebrated you, your show, your dreams, and spoke of all the plans you had for the future.”

“We ended the evening with a hug, telling you how proud we were and how much we loved you,” she added. “If I had known that would be the last time I’d see you, I would have said so much more.”

Nicola said she wished she could step “into a time machine” to relive that night and hug him once again, ask him more questions, and “write it down so I’d never forget.” She directed some sweet words to Liam, writing that she hopes he’s “at peace.”

“I miss you every single day, and I don’t think there will ever be a day that I don’t,” she wrote. “I want to wish you the happiest heavenly birthday. Wherever you are, I hope you’re celebrating.”

Cassidy also shared some photos of the two from over the years, writing that it “breaks my heart” to not give him a physical birthday card or hear his laugh once again.

“In your 31 years here on this earth, you brought so much joy, happiness and hope to so many- especially to me. I hope you know how brightly you still shine, even from up there,” Cassidy wrote. “I would give up years of my life just to give you a few more. I miss making memories with you. I miss having things to look forward to together.”

She added, “But today, my birthday gift to you is my strength. I promise you I will celebrate you extra today, honor your life, and cherish the beautiful times we’ve had. August 29th will be a date that sits in my heart for the rest of my life. I love you so much.”

The singer died on Oct. 16, 2024, after falling from the balcony of a hotel room in Buenos Aires. A Rolling Stone investigation included accounts from his inner circle describing the days before his tragic death. Netflix recently released Building the Band, in which Liam served as a mentor for new groups in formation. He was honored on the show as well.

EastEnders’ Natalie Cassidy says leaving soap was “natural decision”

What do you like about living in the countryside?
We go out for nice walks. Having the country pub and the village hall, it’s very Vicar of Dibley. There’s a sense of everybody looking out for each other, which is sometimes missing in a city.

What have you enjoyed watching?
The whole of Glastonbury. We had family over and it felt like our own mini festival at home. I like to switch off and just watch nice, easy things like Gardeners’ World, University Challenge or Grand Designs. The older I get, the more I just like gentle television.

If you’re a Gardeners’ World fan, does that mean you like gardening?
My other half, Marc [Humphreys, a cameraman] is more of the gardener. Having two kids and a full-time job, I feel like it’s something you do when you’ve got a bit more time. I do enjoy it when I can, though. It can be a very meditative thing – potting plants, looking at your seeds, even watering the garden in the evening when it’s been really hot.

You’re a contestant on Cooking with the Stars. Do you enjoy cooking?
I’d say cooking is probably my favourite hobby. Being in the kitchen, putting the radio on… it’s all about having the time to do it. That’s why I love Sundays – they’re all about making a roast dinner. It’s a bit like a religion for me.

It sounds as if food isn’t just fuel to you, as it is for some people.
I love food. I love cooking and going for meals. Cooking for people and watching them enjoy what you’ve cooked, it brings me joy. I just think it’s the heart of family and friendship.

Natalie Cassidy as Sonia in EastEnders BBC

You released weight-loss DVDs in 2007 and 2013. Is there a tension between loving food and the scrutiny your body is subject to as a woman?
The DVD wasn’t a good move for me – I did it for the money. I’m now 42, and to be honest, I could be doing a bit more exercise at the moment, but I just can’t be bothered. I think, “If this is the size I’m meant to be, then I need to be happy with that.” I don’t overeat. I enjoy my food. I like a glass of wine. I like a packet of crisps, but you can’t do it every day. I think everything in moderation. If I go the other way and want to lose a lot of weight, my days aren’t as good.

That sounds like sensible behaviour to be modelling for your children.
I think it really is. There’s so much pressure with image that I just try to put it into perspective and say to them, “You’re so lucky to be able to see, to be able to hear. As long as you’re not abusing yourself – drinking too much, overeating, you know – whatever shape we are, we’re just very lucky to be here.”

Was it difficult to leave EastEnders after 32 years of playing Sonia?
It was a really natural decision to make. Sometimes when you’re in something, you think that’s all there is, so when I had a break from EastEnders last year, I did The Masked Singer and a doc for Channel 4 [What’s the Big Deal: Britain’s Best Buys?]. Unless you’re free, you’ll never know what’s out there. So I thought I’d like to say goodbye to Sonia and see what else is going on.

What is out there?
My podcast [Life with Nat] is going really well, and I’ve got a book [Happy Days] coming out in October. I would love for a gritty or funny role to come up, but after being Sonia for such a long time, I’m really enjoying being myself.
