‘Palm Royale’ Creator Breaks Down the Carol Burnett Season 2 Scene

by jummy84 December 15, 2025
written by jummy84

With Palm Royale, creator and writer Abe Sylvia has crafted a bright, boisterous dramatic comedy pitched perfectly to the charms and talents of its star, Kristen Wiig (who plays aspiring socialite Maxine Dellacorte-Simmons). But just under the surface of the series’ high comedy, high society and high hair lie hard truths about being a woman of ambition: what it means to be a “have-not” in the glamorous world of “haves,” and the cost of getting all you’ve ever wanted — and what some are willing to do to hold on to even a handful of it. In season two of the series, which also stars Carol Burnett, Laura Dern, Allison Janney and a coterie of notable faces that includes Julia Duffy as fellow socialite Mary Davidsoul, Sylvia ups the ante, putting his characters in direct conflict as they stake even more entitled claims to things that were never theirs. Old frictions become new frays in the very first episode as Norma (Burnett) and Linda, née Penelope (Dern), collide in a tête-à-tête dispensing new secrets and poignant credos after the explosive season one finale that left Robert (Ricky Martin) shot and Linda cuffed.

After Carol Burnett’s Norma spent much of season one mumbling or unconscious in the background, Sylvia wanted her front and center, driving action in season two. “I really wanted to take the opportunity to introduce the audience to Norma in her full power, as only Carol Burnett could embody her,” Sylvia says. “This season, we wanted to leave nothing on the table in terms of the wondrous powers of our actors. And so right out of the gate, we wanted Norma to be driving the first episode.”

When talking about harsh societal realities, Sylvia distills the ethos of the entire show through Norma in this quick exchange. “She’s saying a real truth there: ‘You have agency, you have your own money and you have conviction. You are the poster girl for the enemy within,’ ” Sylvia says. “It’s set against this ridiculous story, but what woman in this country hasn’t felt that way? Look at what happens to women in this country who have ambition and how they’re vilified. Linda’s an idealist and Norma’s a realist. These women of society, even though they had money, still faced all the misogyny and barriers that women have always faced.”

“I like to say, nothing is ever wasted in our show. For all the planning you do, there are some decisions that you make along the way and we won’t always know why we did it until much later, and it totally pays off,” Sylvia says. “Case in point, even though Norma paints a really vivid and convincing picture of how they could pin [the shooting] on Maxine, I was sitting in the writers room and I was like, ‘We need one more piece of evidence. It isn’t enough that she invited Nixon to the ball. It isn’t enough that she had been hanging out with Linda in the feminist bookstore in season one. Like, we need a piece of hard evidence.’ And then I realized that the real culprit we had named Mary Davidsoul, and she has the same initials as Maxine. Those little things, you know. It’s like a puzzle sometimes.”

It’s not only Wiig’s accent and diction, familiar to fans of her work on SNL, that gives Palm Royale its comedic sense of heightened reality, “There’s a very sort of singsong rat-a-tatness to our dialogue that heightens the whole series. But we then also have these actors that can play [up the writing] style, but still do it in a really grounded way,” Sylvia says. But writing for the show means also knowing when to pull back, and Sylvia says he empowers the actors to tell him when enough seems like enough. “I had this one line in this scene … I think at the start it was, ‘just a confluence of convenience,’ which seems very fitting for the show,” Sylvia says. “And Carol goes, ‘Now that’s just even too wordy for us.’ And I said, ‘OK, fair enough.’ ”

Erica Parise/Courtesy of Apple TV+

Comparing how this scene plays out to what was written on the page highlights that so much of what the actors do was never written into the character or the script, Sylvia says. “There’s a beautiful moment later in the scene where, for a moment, Linda considers [Norma’s proposition]. And we didn’t put that in the dialogue, that at the last moment, Linda almost goes along with it,” Sylvia says. “But I remember that when we were doing this scene, I went up to Laura, and she’s one of our greatest living actresses, and I said, ‘Why don’t we put in this moment at the end?’ And when you watch the scene, you’ll see for a moment she realizes that Norma is right, that she is going to fry for this. And you just watch it in Laura’s eyes. There’s a passing moment where she goes, ‘Oh, maybe, maybe I will.’ ”

Sylvia and the writers, up to this point, have breadcrumbed distinct mysteries that they lurch into full steam through the dialogue here. For many viewers, it might raise an intrigued eyebrow to hear Norma saying to Linda that being born rich ruined her. “Norma’s had to hustle. Norma wasn’t born rich,” Sylvia says. “Linda doesn’t know that Norma wasn’t born rich. The origin story begins in the finale of season one, and by episode three of season two, more is revealed — or the story we already know, we get to watch play out.”

bitchy | Princess Kate will host her annual Christmas carol event on December 5

by jummy84 November 14, 2025
written by jummy84

A few days ago, Netflix released the air date and poster for With Love, Meghan’s holiday special. It will be released on December 3. There was some muttering about Meghan “choosing” a release date which would be on or around the Princess of Wales’s big Christmas caroling event. Considering Kate hadn’t released any confirmation of anything yet, it was funny to watch the deranged community get huffy about it in advance. Well, good news for Kate – her Christmas event will be staged two days after the release of WLM’s Holiday Special.

Kate Middleton is continuing a Christmas tradition — with a little help from a Hollywood star. At midnight on Nov. 13, local time, Kensington Palace announced that the Princess of Wales, 43, will host her fifth annual “Together at Christmas” Carol Service on Friday, Dec. 5, at Westminster Abbey in London.

The announcement also revealed that Kate Winslet, Hannah Waddingham, Dan Smith and Chiwetel Ejiofor are all involved. Winslet, an Academy Award-winning actor, will attend after her appointment as an ambassador for The King’s Foundation, one of King Charles’ personal charities, in June.

As for what’s to come at the festive event on Dec. 5, a palace statement said, “Combining traditional and modern elements to encompass people of all faiths and none, the service will see the world-renowned Westminster Abbey choir sing some of the nation’s most beloved carols, alongside musical performances and readings by guests including Hannah Waddingham, Dan Smith, Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.”

“The Service will also showcase stories of some of the incredible guests in the congregation, who are leading by example and helping to create a more connected society,” it continued.

The theme for this year’s event is “love in all its forms.”

“This year, the Service will bring people together to celebrate love in all its forms — whether it’s love within families, through friendships, across communities or even through powerful moments of connection with strangers. In a world that can often feel fragmented and disconnected, love is the force that reconnects us all – spanning generations, communities, cultures and faiths,” the statement said.

“As we approach the Christmas season, we are reminded of the power of togetherness. The evening will highlight the transformative power of investing in one another with compassion, presence and joy,” it added.

[From People]

Hannah Waddingham is showing up the opening of an envelope these days, especially when it comes to anything royal or royal-adjacent. Good for her, in general, to strike while the iron is hot when she got her biggest break in her 40s. Kate Winslet is another one cozying up to the royals a lot lately, and I have no idea why. But Chiwetel?? Hm. Anyway, I’m sure the Princess of Wales will have all three kids there and maybe William will show up too. While this is barely discussed in the British media, the viewership for these specials has cratered in recent years. It will be interesting to see if any outlets try to do a head-to-head match-up between “Together at Christmas” and WLM’s Holiday Special.

Janus Films Acquires Nathan Silver’s Carol Kane Doc Short Carol & Joy

by jummy84 November 4, 2025
written by jummy84

Janus Films has acquired all U.S. rights to “Carol & Joy,” a vérité documentary short featuring Oscar-nominated actress Carol Kane and her 98-year-old mother, Joy.

The film — directed by Nathan Silver (“Between the Temples”) — had its world premiere at the 2025 Telluride Film Festival and continued its fall festival run at the New York Film Festival, Hamptons International Film Festival and Woodstock Film Festival. It had its international premiere at the Viennale.

“Carol & Joy” will now debut exclusively on the Criterion Channel on Dec. 1, 2025. Janus will be supporting the film’s efforts for best documentary short category at the 2026 Academy Awards.

On New York’s Upper West Side, Kane lives with her 98-year-old mother Joy, an active music teacher, former dancer, and lifelong Francophile. In this intimate short vérité documentary shot on 16mm, the filmmaking team behind the acclaimed “Between the Temples” —  for which Kane was recently nominated for a Spirit Award — visit the pair in their home for an afternoon of music and friends and stories.

The film is produced by Jamie Gonçalves (“Predators, “Dos estaciones”), C. Mason Wells (“Between the Temples,” “Thirst Street”), Dweck Productions’ Hannah Dweck and Theodore Schaefer (“Maddie’s Secret,” “The Adults”), and Brian Liebman (“Brats,” “The Featherweight”). Executive producers include Natalie Portman and Sophie Mas’ MountainA (“May December,” “Arco”) and Diane Lanyi (“Between the Temples”). The film was shot in the tradition of legendary cinema vérité makers Albert and David Maysles by Sean Price Williams (“Good Time,” “The Sweet East”) and Hunter Zimny (“Funny Pages”).

“We filmed Carol & Joy on 16mm in a single New York City apartment, using an observational and conversational style indebted to our verite nonfiction heroes from the ‘60s and ‘70s,” said Silver. “I think every one of the documentaries that inspired us is — of course! — in the Janus Films library and streaming on the Criterion Channel. It’s an unbelievable honor for our film to be welcomed to live alongside these greats in the same beautiful building.”

Kane’s career has spanned five decades. She was nominated for best actress at the Academy Awards for “Hester Street,” won two Emmy Awards and earned a Golden Globe nomination for her work on the television series “Taxi,” and garnered an Emmy nomination for “Chicago Hope.” She was also a series regular on the Netflix series “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” and “Hunters.”

“Between the Temples, which world premiered in competition at the Sundance Film Festival, was released by Sony Pictures Classics in 2024. The film was nominated for Best Screenplay at the Gotham Awards and won Kane the New York Film Critics Circle Award for best supporting actress.

Janus Films recently announced the acquisitions of Sophy Romvari’s acclaimed debut feature “Blue Heron,” Carla Simon’s 2025 Cannes selections “Romeria,” auteur Lav Diaz’s latest “Magellan,” the Cannes award-winning “Resurrection” from director Bi Gan, Hlynur Pálmason’s “The Love That Remains,” Sergei Loznitsa’s acclaimed “Two Prosecutors,” and Ira Sachs’ Sundance and New York Film Festival selection “Peter Hujar’s Day.”

Johnny Depp in Talks to Star in Ti West’s Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol

Paramount is ready to take a major chance on Johnny Depp with his biggest role since a contentious legal battle with his ex-wife, Amber Heard. According to The Hollywood Reporter. Depp and the studio are in “final negotiations” to star in Ti West’s upcoming take on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.

Depp would play the titular role in Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol, which has been set for release on November 13th, 2026. The studio describes the project as “a thrilling ghost story set in Dickens’ London, following one man’s supernatural journey to face his past, present, and future and fight for a second chance.”

West is attached to direct the film from a script by Nathaniel Halpern, with Oscar-nominated actress Andrea Riseborough (To Leslie) also tied to the project.

During his years-long defamation battle with Heard, which included allegations of abuse from both sides, Depp was dropped from the Pirates of the Caribbean and Fantastic Beasts franchises.

Though a Virginia jury found Heard liable for defamation in 2022, and the two parties later settled, Depp has worked almost entirely outside of Hollywood since then.

“I don’t feel boycotted, because I don’t think about Hollywood,” Depp said while promoting the French film Jeanne du Barry at Cannes in 2023. “I don’t feel much further need for Hollywood — I don’t know about you.”

After starring in the upcoming Lionsgate-distributed Day Drinker, helmed by The Amazing Spider-Man director Marc Webb, it appears Depp is back in Hollywood’s good graces.

Zachary Quinto Talks Wolf and Josh’s Kiss, Carol in Flashforward (Exclusive)

by jummy84 September 30, 2025
written by jummy84

[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 2 “The Contestant.”]

It has not been an easy start to the season for Dr. Oliver Wolf (Zachary Quinto) on Brilliant Minds. First, his father Noah leaves with just a letter (after Wolf avoided him, despite the other man living in his house). Now, his mother, Muriel (Donna Murphy), has stepped down as CMO of the hospital and will just be his mother. Then there’s the complicated relationship with Josh (Teddy Sears) — the two are trying to just be friends — and the fact that Wolf will be a patient at Hudson Oaks’ psychiatric facility in six months.

First, Quinto is quick to assure us that Murphy isn’t going anywhere, though the show has lost the mother and son working together. “We spent so much of the first season watching Wolf deal with his trauma that originated in his family, his primary family of origin. I think Michael [Grassi, showrunner] wanted to open up some new storytelling landscape for Wolf,” Quinto explains in the video interview above. “And so I think that the vacuum that Muriel’s absence creates at the hospital will be a very interesting thing to chart and to navigate. I also think that it gives space and room for Wolf to become his own doctor in a way that working with his mom always had him maybe up against some degree of expectation that he’s no longer beholden to.”

Pief Weyman/NBC

He also reveals that the line about him looking forward to her being his mom and not his boss was something that they came up with on the day of shooting that scene. “I felt like it was something that Wolf needed to say and that it is nice to consider exploring their relationship from a different angle and not from the angle of Muriel having to be the messenger of the hospital mandates,” he says.

Elsewhere in the episode, Wolf invites Josh out for drinks and kisses him in what Quinto says was “an impulsive, vulnerable moment.” He also says that Josh was right to stop him because it was, in part, an attempt at a distraction from the fact that his father left.

He continues, “I don’t think Wolf is particularly comfortable in his own vulnerability. I think he’s able to show up for other people and their vulnerabilities when he is dealing with his patients. But I think in that moment, he felt like Josh showed up for him, supported him, and he wanted to connect on a level that allowed him to put things behind him that he didn’t want to really look at. And I think rightfully so, Josh interrupts that moment and says, ‘I can’t be a part of your distraction. I can be a part of your support system, but I can’t be a part of your distraction.’ And so I think it’s an attempt for Wolf to avoid looking at the magnitude of the impact that Noah’s return and then immediate disappearance or relatively immediate disappearance has had on his emotional and mental wellbeing.”

Wolf also understands why Josh hit pause on them. “He respects Josh’s boundaries. I think he has to understand that he wasn’t behaving in a way that was particularly respectful or particularly generous toward Josh at the end of the first season, according to Quinto. “I think he realizes that Josh deserves better and maybe in time Wolf will be able to provide that for him, but maybe not.”

In the Season 1 finale, Josh told Wolf he was falling for him. Wolf didn’t respond in kind. Grassi then told us he would in his own unique way. What might that look like?

“I think he finds different ways to communicate the way he’s feeling to Josh throughout the course of the second season,” teases Quinto. “I think part of what he’s learning is how to be present with his feelings and communicate them in real time. I think he’s somebody who’s lived a lot of his life not doing that —compartmentalizing and intellectualizing and processing in different ways. I think one of the catalysts that Josh is for Wolf is to kind of just be more present and be more comfortable in his own vulnerability.”

This episode ends with another flashforward, and in this one, Carol is by Wolf’s side, telling him it’s for the best, as he signs himself into Hudson Oaks, the psychiatric facility run by Amelia (Bellamy Young).

“I think there’s no one that Wolf trusts more than Carol, and probably at this point, including his parents,” Quinto tells us. “And so I think bringing her with him for that moment of surrender is very telling. And I think they have each other’s backs in a way that you can probably rest assured that it is the best place for him to be, at least in that moment if she’s advocating for it.”

Watch the full video interview above with Zachary Quinto about Muriel’s news, Oliver and Josh’s relationship, the flashforwards, Amelia showing up in the present, and much more.
