Is it 1950? Ismail Darbar’s ‘Backward’ Comments On Gauahar Khan’s Career Ignite Reddit Regret

Veteran Bollywood music composer Ismail Darbar is tuning out of public favour and into a social media controversy after comments he made regarding his daughter-in-law, actor Gauahar Khan, and her professional life. In a recent interview, Darbar sparked a fiery debate by suggesting that women should not continue their careers after marriage and motherhood, drawing sharp criticism from netizens who quickly labelled his views as “regressive.”

The Spark: A Mother’s Sacrifice vs. A Woman’s Work

The controversy stems from an interview Darbar gave to journalist Vickey Lalwani, where he initially showered praise on Gauahar Khan for being a devoted wife to his son, Zaid Darbar, and a loving mother. However, the conversation took a divisive turn when Darbar began to articulate his personal, traditional stance on a woman’s professional life post-marriage.

The composer, known for his work in films like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, openly admitted to coming from a “backward family” where conservative values still hold sway. “We used to turn away whenever a sensuous scene came in a movie. That happens in our house even today,” Darbar stated, linking this conservative environment to his views on Gauahar’s career. He stressed that now that Gauahar is part of their family, they feel a responsibility for her “reputation.”

Crucially, Darbar clarified that while he holds this opinion, he would not personally forbid the actor from working. “I can’t tell her not to work; that right only belongs to Zaid,” a statement that further fuelled the ensuing backlash. He also explained that he takes measures to avoid conflict within the family, saying, “I avoid watching anything that might bother me because I know I won’t be able to tolerate it, and if I can’t tolerate it, I will confront them.”

To support his viewpoint, Ismail Darbar cited his own wife, Ayesha Darbar, who chose to step away from her career after becoming a mother. He lauded his wife’s decision, calling it the “greatest sacrifice for their family”—a comparison that many interpreted as a subtle demand or expectation placed upon his daughter-in-law.

The Reddit Uproar: ‘Who Gave Zaid the Right?’

It didn’t take long for snippets of the interview to go viral, particularly on platforms like Reddit, where users overwhelmingly condemned the composer’s patriarchal outlook. The core of the criticism focused on the assertion that a husband—or any family member—should have the authority to permit or restrict an adult woman’s career choices.

One angry user on Reddit captured this sentiment directly, writing, “Who gave Zaid the right to permit or restrict her from working? She’s an adult, not a minor.” Another commenter highlighted the financial reality of the situation, pointing out the irony of the statement given the relative professional standing of the family members: “Who is going to earn then? Gauahar is the most famous and accomplished person in this family.”

Several netizens pointed out the significant achievements of the actor and reality show winner, whose professional accomplishments widely surpass those of her husband, Zaid Darbar, who is primarily known as a choreographer and influencer. A scathing comment read, “It’s the same old mentality, if she’s a woman, she should stay home. Maybe tell your son to work harder instead of asking your daughter-in-law to quit.”

The controversy also extended to other members of the family, with one user offering a darkly humorous comment about Ismail Darbar’s other son, Awez Darbar, and his fiancée, Nagma Mirajkar, suggesting she still had “time to run” before getting entangled in similar expectations.

Love Story Meets Traditional Values

Gauahar Khan and Zaid Darbar’s relationship has always been a public, modern love story. The two met during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown, reportedly at a grocery store. Zaid, captivated by her, soon messaged Gauahar on social media, calling her “the most beautiful woman he had ever seen.” Their whirlwind romance quickly blossomed, culminating in their marriage in December 2020.

This modern, independent beginning makes Ismail Darbar’s traditionalist comments all the more jarring for the public. The debate has transformed from a family discussion into a larger social commentary on the enduring struggle between traditional Indian family values and the increasing financial and professional independence of modern women, particularly those in the public eye.

As of now, neither Gauahar Khan nor Zaid Darbar has publicly addressed Ismail Darbar’s statements. The silence leaves many wondering how the actor, who has built a successful career based on her own talent and drive, will navigate the conflicting expectations now laid bare by her father-in-law. For many, the comments serve as a harsh reminder that even in seemingly progressive, high-profile families, the question of a woman’s work after marriage remains a hot-button, and often “regressive,” topic.

written by jummy84

Liv Ullmann will be honored during the upcoming European Film Awards with a career award celebrating her body of work as an actress, director and screenwriter.

Ullmann has been an international star since Ingmar Bergman’s 1966 arthouse hit “Persona.” Indeed, she is best-known for her collaborations with Bergman, acting in 10 of his films and directing two of his screenplays. Bergman was also the father of her daughter, author Lin Ullmann.

Ullmann is also known for her work with Swedish director Jan Troell in “The New Land” (1972) and “The Emigrants,” for which she was nominated for an Oscar, and with Italy’s Mauro Bolognini in “Farewell Moscow,” for which she won a David di Donatello award.

Ullmann’s first film as a director was ” Sofie” (1992), about the life of a Jewish woman in Copenhagen from 1886 to 1907, starring Karen-Lise Mynster, Erland Josephson and Ghita Nørby. That drama was followed by an adaptation of Nobel laureate Sigrid Undset’s great historical epic “Kristin Lavransdatter” (1995) set in 14th-century Norway, and “Private Confessions” (1996), written by Bergman and starring Pernilla August and Max von Sydow. Her film “Faithless” (2000), starring Lena Endre and Erland Josephson, premiered in competition at Cannes Film Festival and her most recent directorial effort is “Miss Julie” with Colin Farrell and Jessica Chastain.

“Liv Ullmann has helped to shape our understanding of European film,” the European Film Academy said in a statement.

The 38th edition of the European Film Awards will take place on Jan. 17, 2026, in Athens.

Emily Blunt’s children are largely unimpressed by her Hollywood career.

Emily Blunt’s children are largely unimpressed by her career

The 42-year-old actress, whose latest film is the The Smashing Machine, joked one of her daughters even recoiled at seeing her in full makeup after a magazine photoshoot during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! one which she discussed how her daughters Hazel, 11, and Violet, nine, view her life in the spotlight.

Both girls were backstage for the recording, cheering their mother on before she stepped out to join host Jimmy Kimmel, 57.

Emily said: “They were literally like that before I went on,” holding her hands up in the shape of a heart. She added: “And then I kind of pretended to puke. Then I was on.”

Jimmy – who has children Jane, 11, and Billy, eight, with his wife Molly McNearney, as well as adult children Katie, 34, and Kevin, 32 – said his kids were also in the studio audience.

He asked Emily: “Do you think your kids realise how much more fun it is when you bring them to your work than when we went to our parents’ work?”

The actress replied she hoped they would appreciate it one day, noting her father had been a criminal defense lawyer.

She said: “I used to go and watch him at work, which was pretty amazing.”

Jimmy pressed: “But you didn’t get like Cheez-Its. There was no snack table, right? None of that?’”

Emily laughed, confirming her daughters’ experience on film sets was a little more glamorous than hers had been.

She went on to share how little impact her accomplishments had on her children.

Emily said: “I don’t know if they’re meant to be impressed.

“I did a photoshoot the other day for the cover of a magazine. I was pretty stoked about it. I’d spent the whole day with people saying, ‘Oh my god. So fierce. You look so good. You just look so gorgeous, Emily’. “And I walked into my apartment still with my photoshoot makeup on, and my oldest daughter, Hazel, went, ‘Ew’.

“And my little one, Violet, was like, ‘I think you look nice, mama’.

“So I, you know, I’ve turned one of them.”

Jimmy joked parents “always get one nice one” before admitting his own children were similarly unimpressed.

He added: “They’re not impressed by anything… and they shouldn’t be, obviously.”

Emily replied: “I think it’s healthy, right?”

Jimmy agreed, though added: “I find it a little bit annoying sometimes.”

Asked whether her daughters’ friends ever reacted to her fame, Emily explained it was usually their parents who took more notice.

She said: “Sometimes the parents try to sort of recruit them, and they’re like, ‘That’s Mary Poppins’.

“And I’m there in my sweatpants, and the kids are like, ‘It’s not. It’s really not. Or I hope it’s not’.”

Emily has Hazel and Violet with her husband, actor and director John Krasinski.

Madonna has used her first podcast interview to declare said she owes her decades-long career to her spiritual practice.

Madonna has used her first podcast interview to declare she owes her decades-long career to her spiritual practice

The 67-year-old singer will appear on a new episode of On Purpose with Jay Shetty on Monday (29.09.25), where she speaks candidly with podcast host Jay Shetty about the role spirituality has played in her life.

The discussion ranges from forgiveness and success to the influence of Kabbalah, which Madonna first encountered in 1996 shortly before the birth of her daughter Lourdes Leon.

An extract from the chat obtained by People reveals Madonna tells Jay: “You need to be spiritual to be successful. Success is having a spiritual life, period. I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t have one.”

The seven-time Grammy award winner, known for her outspoken advocacy on human rights, added: “What have I done for others? That’s really the only way you can be successful in life. It’s like the greatest amount of light is where there’s darkness and you can reveal the most amount of light. When you’re in a dark room, you turn on the light. When you’re in a room that’s already light, what do you, there’s no, um, effort made. So should we look for darkness?”

She continued: “My soul’s purpose is to reveal light in the world through whatever I do. I want it all, but I want it for the sake of sharing, not to keep it for myself.”

The podcast also features Eitan Yardeni, Madonna’s longtime Kabbalah teacher.

The pair recently launched a new course titled The Mystical Studies of the Zohar.

Speaking to Jay, Madonna admitted she had once been vulnerable to outside judgment.

She added: “I was once a slave or victim of other people’s opinions of me.

“I don’t fit in, and not fitting in is what saves you.”

Reflecting on her career highs and lows, she insisted spirituality has provided the foundation for her resilience.

Madonna said: “Spiritual wisdom is not helpful when everything’s going your way. It’s helpful when you’re challenged and when you’re happy.

“It’s helpful to remember that at any given time, in any moment, it could be gone. So don’t take it for granted. Have humility.

“Radical acceptance is just accepting that what is happening to you is meant to happen to you – and that you’re going to be okay.”

Gabrielle Union Opens Up About the One Career Move That Changed Everything

Gabrielle Union, a multi-hyphenate talent, has built her success on reinvention and resilience. Speaking at the Variety Entertainment and Technology Summit, she reflected on her journey, she said: “It’s the power of the pivot. When it’s not working or it doesn’t sit right in my soul, I’m losing sleep. It’s wrong. I have to pivot, and there’s no shame in my game. I didn’t like it; it did not work for me. I’m going to try again.”

Union was recognized for ventures including Proudly, a baby-care brand for children of color launched with husband Dwyane Wade, along with Flawless haircare and Bitsy’s healthy snacks. She described her mission: “All I wanted to do was to help and ensure I covered the most vulnerable while centering the needs, wants, desires and fears of folks who have been historically marginalized. When I do that in my arts and entrepreneurship, my soul sings. That’s what it all boils down to.”

During a Q&A, Union recalled a defining moment from the Bad Boys II press tour in 2003: “While I had that microphone in my hand, I knew I could speak truth to power and make real change. That was the first time I was like, ‘Wow, people are listening to me, they’re printing what I’m saying and it’s traveling around the world. So I should say something of substance that helps more than just me.’” She added: “I’ve never betrayed that trust, and that allows me to tell different kinds of stories and create companies that center the most vulnerable. If those people can trust that I have their best interests at heart and I’m gonna do right by them, I can do anything.”

Union also reflected on her evolving career, from relaunching Flawless in 2020 to revisiting the 25th anniversary of Bring It On. Speaking about working behind the scenes, she said: “If you never have access to look behind the curtain to see how the sausage is made, you think what they show you is all that there is. The second I peeked behind the curtain, I said, ‘Oh hell no.’ There’s more to this. I wanted to be a part of making that happen. I wanted to be a part of how the sausage is made and not just eat whatever they handed me.”

Ida Lupino's 'The Hard Way,' Now on Blu-ray, Is a Career Best

Ida Lupino’s ‘The Hard Way,’ Now on Blu-ray, Is a Career Best

by jummy84 September 26, 2025
written by jummy84

When Ida Lupino was working as an actress under contract to Warner Bros. in the 1940s, she joked that she was “the poor man’s Bette Davis,” partly because she tended to be offered parts that Davis had rejected.

Lupino might have been unhappy with the caliber of many of her roles — she was suspended by studio head Jack Warner after refusing assignments in “King’s Row” and “Juke Girl” — but her sojourn at Warner Bros. yielded a memorable body of work that has aged far better than those of many of Lupino’s contemporaries.

That’s largely thanks to Lupino’s collaborations with two great — and still somewhat underrated — Warner contract directors, Raoul Walsh and Vincent Sherman. Walsh and Sherman both recognized Lupino’s superior intellect and resistance to unearned sentimentality. They figured out how to showcase her edgy sensibility in a series of powerful, uncompromising films: “They Live By Night,” “High Sierra,” and “The Man I Love” for Walsh; “The Hard Way” and “In Our Time” for Sherman.

Taken together, these movies, along with later projects like Nicolas Ray’s “On Dangerous Ground” and Don Siegel’s “Private Hell 36,” make a case for Lupino as the quintessential noir heroine — not necessarily a femme fatale, but a performer whose combination of weary cynicism, razor-sharp intelligence, and deeply buried vulnerability perfectly expressed the contradictions and anxieties of America in a time of war and its aftermath. There was something so bleak and hopeless about Lupino’s onscreen presence that even movies one wouldn’t traditionally classify as film noir became noir simply by virtue of Lupino appearing in them.

“The Hard Way” is a case in point. Its story, in which Lupino plays a kind of stage mother (the actress she’s managing is actually her little sister) who manipulates everyone in her path to get her and her sibling out of their miserable life in a polluted coal mining town, is essentially an old-fashioned show business melodrama. Yet Lupino brings such intensity and anger to her performance that the film’s register shifts into something far darker — so dark, in fact, that a prologue and epilogue Jack Warner insisted be added to make the movie more glamorous focus on a suicide attempt!

Typically, Lupino didn’t want the part (another of Bette Davis’ cast-offs) when it was offered to her, and according to Sherman’s memoir “Studio Affairs,” she never got over her lack of faith in the movie. (“This picture is going to stink, and I’m going to stink in it,” she told the director.) To make matters worse for Sherman, author Irwin Shaw, who wrote the underlying source material, opposed Sherman directing the picture — he wanted William Wyler or Howard Hawks.

Sherman soldiered on — even as Jack Warner told him no one wanted to see a movie about “dirty people in the coal mines” — and directed Lupino to the performance of her career. As Helen Chernen, an unhappily married woman stuck in a miserable town with a husband she hates and a little sister with seemingly unattainable dreams, Lupino oozes resentment, frustration, and smug superiority. Yet without ever downplaying her character’s many off-putting qualities or forcing any kind of sentiment, she subtly conveys the disillusionment and disenfranchisement that led her to go dark — it’s an extraordinarily complex portrayal.

Lupino is aided considerably by Sherman’s expressive visual style, in which Helen’s surroundings seem to be physical manifestations of her neuroses; the early scenes set in the coal mining town are particularly effective and oppressive, with Sherman and cinematographer James Wong Howe smothering the characters in a smoggy haze. Once Helen gets her little sister Katie (Joan Leslie) to Broadway, the visuals become more glamorous and the editing snappier — courtesy of some dazzling montages cut by Lupino’s future “Private Hell 36” director Don Siegel — but the darkness in Lupino and the other characters not only remains, it gets even more scabrous.

The tension between show business glitz and a persistent undercurrent of backstabbing betrayal (nearly everyone in the movie seems to have malicious intentions at one point or another, and even the most “positive” characters work against the interests of people they love out of insecurity) is just one of the many productive oppositions at work throughout the movie, and an example of why Sherman was such a deft Hollywood craftsman.

Throughout “The Hard Way,” Sherman finds ways to serve the demands of his corporate overlords without softening his material; the aforementioned prologue and epilogue are a perfect example. When Warner said it took too long for Lupino to enter her glamorous phase in the narrative, Sherman added a framing device in which a suicidal Lupino narrated the tale from a hospital bed. In a literal sense, the scenes give Warner what he asked for: Lupino in makeup, looking more like a movie star than in her dingy coal mining town scenes. Yet by adding the suicide component, Sherman makes the movie even more grim and cynical than it already was, turning a studio edict into an artistic benefit.

“The Hard Way” is newly available on Blu-ray from Warner Archive, and it’s yet another of that label’s exquisite presentations (they also put out a must-see edition of the Lupino-Walsh classic “The Man I Love”). Aside from providing a chance to see Sherman and Howe’s lustrous images in an immaculate transfer, the disc reminds us what a truly great actress Lupino was.

In recent years she has been exalted for her pioneering work as a director on searing noir classics like “Outrage” (1950) and “The Hitch-hiker” (1953), as she should be — her status as one of the few women directing personal, powerful features during Hollywood’s classical studio era has been correctly recognized by cinephile admirers like Allison Anders and Martin Scorsese as something worth celebrating.

However, Lupino’s elevated status as an auteur has diverted attention away from her equally impressive work in front of the camera — she’s not often thought of as being on the same level as more famous Warner contract actresses, such as Joan Crawford, Olivia de Havilland, and Lauren Bacall. She should be, and “The Hard Way” proves it. Lupino was no “poor man’s Bette Davis.” She was a star whose talents were every bit as formidable as those of her better-known peer.

“The Hard Way” is now available on Blu-ray from Warner Archive.

Aditya Ojha Reacts to Controversy Around Pawan Singh For Rumors of Destroying People’s Career In Industry

by jummy84 September 25, 2025

Pawan Singh, popularly known as the “Power Star” of Bhojpuri cinema, enjoys massive stardom in the industry. Alongside his successful career as an actor and singer, he frequently finds himself in the spotlight due to controversies. Recently, Pawan Singh was accused of misbehaving with Anjali Raghav, a Haryanvi singer, which stirred heated discussions on social media. The Bhojpuri star eventually issued an apology, but the matter once again raised questions about his influence in the industry.

Aditya Ojha Opened Up On Pawan Singh Accused For Destroying Career of People

For years, there has been a perception that Pawan Singh has the power to “make or break” someone’s career. This belief gained traction especially after his much-publicized breakup with Bhojpuri actress Akshara Singh. Addressing this issue, actor Aditya Ojha, who has worked with Pawan Singh in several Bhojpuri films, shared his opinion in an interview with one of the media houses.

Talking about this, Aditya Ojha said, “Even if someone wants to harm another person, they cannot do so unless God allows it.” He further gave an example from history, recalling the story of a bandit named Ratnakar during the time of Gautam Buddha, who would kill people and cut off their fingers. “If someone has power, it should be used to uplift others. Ruining someone is easy, but building someone is very difficult,” he explained.

Aditya Ojha

Ojha also clarified that he has never personally heard of Pawan Singh destroying anyone’s career. He emphasized again that ultimately, no one can harm another unless it is destined by God. His statement comes as a balanced response to long-standing rumors that Pawan Singh uses his influence against rivals. Meanwhile, Pawan Singh continues to remain active both in films and on television. He recently participated in the reality show Rise and Fall but left midway to focus on the Bihar elections. Despite his controversies, he remains one of the most popular faces in the Bhojpuri entertainment industry with a loyal fan base.

Sanjay Dutt Once Boasted, “I Would Have Broken Trishala’s Legs” Talking About Her Daughter’s ‘Acting Ka Bhoot’ & Career Choice!

by jummy84 September 21, 2025
written by jummy84

Sanjay Dutt Once Talked About Daughter Trishala’s Choice Of Profession (Photo Credit – Instagram)

There are generally two types of parents – one the protective ones and the other – the over-protective ones. The latter one seems to be built in Sanjay Dutt‘s behavioral pattern since he made sure that his daughter Trishala Dutt does not choose what she wants as her career choice.

For the unversed, Trishala, who lives abroad and is a Forensic Scientist, once wanted to be an actress. But clearly, her father, Sanjay, did not approve of this career choice. In fact, in many of his interviews, he talked about his daughter’s career choice and dismissed it outright.

What Did Sanjay Dutt Say About His Daughter’s Desire To Take Up Acting?

During one of his conversations with the media in 2017, the actor talked about his on-screen daughter Aditi Rao Hydari in Bhoomi and compared her to off-screen daughter Trishala and said, “I would have broken her Trishala’s legs if she would have chosen acting, but with Aditi, I’m not doing so.”

In yet another interview with Filmfare in 2013, the Munna Bhai MBBS actor told the publication, “I’m glad uske sar se acting ka bhoot utar gaya. She has given up on her acting ambitions, at least for now. She’s such an intelligent girl who’s done Forensic Science. So, I could never understand why she wanted to give it all up and become an actress.”

“Aur is industry mein actor banne ke liye (to be in this industry), you need to know the language. So, language would’ve been the biggest barrier for her. God only knows where she got this idea from, but ab nahin hai. I hope she joins the FBI soon and makes me proud. Her education should be of some use,” he added.

The actor even crossed the line a bit and said, “Trishala is a forensic scientist, full stop. She has such a good job. Why would I want her to come here and shake her as*?”

Well, may be Sanjay Dutt was over-protective about his daughter joining the industry since he knows this industry and its dark side way too well. Ain’t all parents the same when it comes to protecting their kids from the worst of the experiences?

What Next For Sanjay Dutt?

Following his recent appearance in The Bhootnii and Housefull 5, Dutt starred in Baaghi 4, playing the antagonist Chacko. He also has a major line-up ahead. The actor will star in KD: The Devil next followed by Dhurandhar and The Raja Saab. He is also reported to appear in Akhanda 2, Sheram Di Kaum Punjab and Baap.

Malaika Arora Talks About Being Judged for Her Career, Clothes and Relationships

by jummy84 September 17, 2025
written by jummy84

Malaika Arora has often been on the receiving end of judgment, and recently, the actress opened up about it in a heartfelt interview. The actress was previously married to Arbaaz Khan and was dating Arjun Kapoor after their divorce. However, Arjun and Malaika broke up last year.

Opening up on the judgment, she told Hindustan Times, “It was tough because people love to tell you what you should or shouldn’t be. I was judged for my career, my clothes, my relationships – you name it. But the day I stopped explaining myself was the day I felt free. My biggest takeaway. The only narrative that matters is the one you write for yourself.”

Malaika further stated that she has been called too bold and outspoken, but she wears it like a crown now. The actress continued, “I’ve been called too bold, too outspoken, too everything. And honestly, I wear it like a crown now. If I am too much for someone, they are probably not enough for me. Whether in fashion, fitness or just film choices I’ve made, I’ve never followed a formula. I’ve always believed that real confidence comes when you stop performing for the world and start living for yourself.”

Malaika Arora

She then revealed that there are days when she questions herself, but she has learnt to meet those moments with kindness rather than criticism. Meanwhile, on the work front, Malaika Arora is set to make a special appearance in a song in Thama. The Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna starrer will be releasing in October this year. She was previously seen in the song Majha Yek Number from the Marathi film Yek Number.
