The Best Skin Care Routine for Mature Skin, According to Dermatologists

by jummy84 November 25, 2025
written by jummy84

Our skin is constantly evolving, which means changes to our regiments are sometimes needed—especially when it comes to finding the best skin care routine for mature skin.

While almost every skin care routine checks the same basic boxes—cleanse, treat, moisturize, repeat—mature skin care routines also typically target concerns like fine lines, loss of elasticity, and hyperpigmentation. According to Dendy Engelman, MD, a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist, as we age, our skin loses moisture faster, and our collagen and elastin production starts to decline. Introducing anti-aging ingredients like retinol, vitamin C, and peptides can go a long way, but building a consistent daily routine is just as important when caring for mature skin.

We asked dermatologists and skin care experts for their tips to craft the best skin care routine for mature skin. Ahead, you’ll find…

The best morning routine for mature skin

Think of your morning skin care routine as your skin’s best defense against your environment and busy day. “The morning routine focuses on protecting the skin from UV exposure, pollution, and oxidative stress.” Paula Brezavseck PA-C, board-certified physician associate and founder of Azala Skin Clinic, tells Glamour. Here’s what it should include:

Gentle Cleanser

“Use a mild, hydrating cleanser (cream or oil-based are good options) to remove impurities without stripping the skin’s natural moisture barrier,” says Angela Lamb, MD, director of the Westside Mount Sinai Dermatology Faculty Practice.

Serum

While not essential, a morning serum is a great opportunity to work some extra skin care actives into your routine without overwhelming your skin at night. “Vitamin C a potent antioxidant that protects the skin from UV rays and free-radical damage from stress and pollution,” says Dr. Palmer. “It also helps to build collagen and fade areas of hyperpigmentation.”

If you’re noticing more dryness in your skin throughout the day, you can also opt for a gentler serum for an extra shot of hydration. Look for a formula with peptides or hyaluronic acid—“a humectant that can hold up to 1,000x its weight in water, giving skin a plumper, smoother appearance and reducing the look of wrinkles caused by dehydration,” explains Dr. Whitney Hovenic, double board-certified dermatologist and Mohs Surgeon.

Moisturizer

“Mature skin is often drier, so apply a good quality, fragrance-free moisturizer daily to trap water and keep skin hydrated,” Dr. Lamb says. “Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, or glycerin.”

SPF

If your daily moisturizer doesn’t include sun protection, make sure to add a layer of broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher—yes, even if it’s winter or you’re planning to be inside all day. “Sun protection is essential, especially on the face, neck, and hands, as UV exposure is one of the biggest drivers of visible aging,” Brezavseck says.

The best evening routine for mature skin

While the morning skin care routine is all about prep and protection, nighttime is for recovery. Active ingredients work hard while you’re sleeping (without pesky environmental complications) to resolve common mature skin concerns. “Because the skin’s natural repair processes slow with age, nighttime consistency becomes especially important,” Brezavseck says. Here’s what you should use:

Cleanser

Since you’re washing your day off (sweat, makeup residue, dirt) you can opt for a lightly heavier-duty cleanser at night, like a foaming formula rather than a balm. But since mature skin care is all about preserving hydration, Dr. Lamb still says to avoid harsh soaps.

Retinol or retinoids

Retinol tends to be the centerpiece of the of the anti-aging skin care routine and for good reason: “Retinol stimulate cell turnover, increases collagen production and decreases the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It has also been shown to regulate oil production and decrease inflammation and hyperpigmentation,” says board-certified dermatologist Dr. Debbie Palmer.

That endorsement might make you want to start drenching your face in retinol nightly, but you’re totally new to the ingredient—and especially if you have sensitive skin—start slow. Kiran Mian, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at Hudson Dermatology & Laser Surgery, recommends starting out by with a pea-sized amount of retinol cream or serum to your whole face once a week. Look out for signs of irritation, and gradually increase use (up to every other night) according to your skin’s tolerance.

Targeted Treatment

This is where you can tailor your nighttime routine to your unique skin care concerns. It’s generally best to avoid pairing retinoids with other chemical exfoliants or harsh ingredients, but if you think your routine needs another active, there are additional options.

The Vintage Marché Founder Lili Aghaei Shares Why It-Girls Love Her Finds — and How to Care for Yours

Marché magic! Hailey Bieber, Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid, Sydney Sweeney, Jessica Alba, Nina Dobrev, and more It-girls have been flocking to The Vintage Marché in Los Angeles, California to snag pre-loved designer handbags, shoes, belts, and jewelry.

The showroom, home to treasures from Gucci, Prada, Chanel, Fendi, Dior, and other top fashion houses, has quickly become a go-to destination for stars looking to score hard to get items.

Emma McIntyre/Getty Images for GQ

Lili Aghaei, founder of the business, says the draw starts with the rarity of the items she sources.

“I’ve always been obsessed with vintage luxury pieces that no one else had. Growing up, my mom and grandmother would take me to antique shops, consignment stores, and estate sales, and I fell in love with the hunt and the thrill,” she explains.

Now, Aghaei is sharing that same feeling with celebrities, and everyone else who appreciates a good find.

Stefanie Keenan/Getty Images for Baby2Baby

“My vintage vibe is refined and quietly luxurious but always rooted in storytelling. I’m drawn to timeless pieces with real craftsmanship that carry a kind of soul and magic you just can’t recreate today,” the curator shares.

“People know that when they come to us, they’re getting editorial-worthy treasures that look new, but have the history and uniqueness of vintage.”

As for what’s trending this holiday season: “Creamy beiges, rich chocolates, and classic blacks, with pops of deep red, burgundy, and gold give a festive, polished feel. … Textures are having a moment too, especially pony hair and exotic skins.”

Lindsey Molk

Luckily, shoppers will find plenty of those details in The Fall Edit: Part II, dropping Wednesday, Nov. 19 at 9 a.m. PST.

Once you’ve snagged your picks, Aghaei says proper care is essential.

“Treat each piece like the little work of art it is. … These pieces have lived a life before you, so a little extra care helps them stay beautiful for decades to come.”

Her biggest tip? Focus on storage.

The Vintage Marché/Instagram

“Keep handbags stuffed to maintain their shape, avoid direct sunlight, and use dust bags or breathable covers. For shoes, rotate wear and avoid exposing delicate materials like satin or pony hair to moisture. When it comes to cleaning, less is more. A soft cloth, gentle leather conditioner, and professional maintenance once or twice a year go a long way.”

And when it’s time to get dressed, Aghaei recommends striking the right balance with your old and new items.

“If your vintage piece has texture or character, keep the rest of your outfit streamlined. If your clothing is minimal, it’s the perfect moment to let a standout vintage accessory shine. When you blend the two, you get this effortless, elevated look that feels personal, timeless, and completely your own.”

Nutritionist says if you really care about your father’s health, make sure he is having these 3 superfoods daily

As we age, it is essential to focus on a balanced diet rich in protein, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats, while limiting processed foods, sugary drinks, and excessive unhealthy fats. But do you want to know about specific foods that can help keep your dad healthy and strong? Also read | 5 superfoods you must include in your diet

Allicin in garlic is the magic compound that helps lower cholesterol.(pixabay)

In a November 4 Instagram post, nutritionist Shalini Sudhakar shared her advice on improving men’s health through the daily consumption of three superfoods. According to her, you should ask your father to consume roasted garlic cloves first thing in the morning on an empty stomach to reduce cholesterol and protect heart health, as roasting them in ghee activates the beneficial allicin compound.

Shalini also recommended eating soaked fenugreek (methi) seeds before each meal to control sugar levels and safeguard organs like the pancreas and liver due to their galactomannan content. She further advised fathers to consume roasted pumpkin seeds an hour before bed for better sleep, joint strength, and cancer prevention, crediting the omega-3, selenium, and lignans within the seeds.

‘When and how to consume are very important’

“If you really care about your father’s health, ensure that he is consuming these three superfoods every day. Making him listen is very difficult, but you have to do it. When to consume – and how to consume – is very important, so don’t miss out on that… take very good care of the man who carried you in his heart and on his shoulder.”

Here’s what Shalini suggested:

6-8 roasted garlic pods on an empty stomach in the early morning

“The allicin in garlic is very important to reduce the cholesterol level and protect his heart health. Roast the garlic in two to three drops of desi ghee to activate the allicin compound, making it very effective,” she said.

Soaked methi seeds

Shalini added, “He needs the galactomannan to control the sugar levels and protect his pancreas, kidneys and liver. Take three teaspoons of methi seeds and soak them overnight. Ask him to have one teaspoon of methi seeds 15 minutes before breakfast, lunch and dinner.”

Roasted pumpkin seeds

“The omega-3 and selenium will prevent any kind of joint pains and nervous weakness and strengthen the joints and the bones. Most importantly, the lignans in pumpkin seeds will prevent cancer. Dry roast pumpkin seeds and ask him to have one tablespoon 1 hour before going to bed. It will also help him sleep much better,” she concluded.

Dakota Johnson “really doesn’t care” what people think of her so-called “naked” dresses.

Dakota Johnson ‘really doesn’t care’ what people think of her so-called ‘naked’ dresses.

The 36-year-old actress and director spoke openly about her bold fashion choices in a new Vogue Germany cover story, explaining she plans to keep wearing the daring looks that have become her signature.

Dakota said she felt empowered rather than exposed by her sartorial decisions, which have frequently made headlines at major events.

In the interview, the Verity star was asked whether she ever worries “about whether a naked dress might be ‘too sexy’.”

She replied candidly: “I really don’t care.”

Dakota then added: “I’ve been able to wear some of the most beautiful dresses, and I feel beautiful in them, so I wear them.”

She continued: “Sometimes those dresses look good on me. But there are also some we’ve tried on that didn’t look good at all. It depends on the shape, the finish, the colour, and everything else. So if I find a beautiful dress that I feel comfortable in, of course I want to wear it! And it’s fun to wear a sexy dress.”

According to Vogue Germany, Dakota – who is the daughter of actress Melanie Griffith and Miami Vice star Don Johnson – credited her mother for instilling a sense of confidence in her from a young age.

She said: “My mom was just very open about the topic of bodies.

“She taught us how to take care of our bodies and love them, and that our bodies are beautiful.

“And I think that’s something really important for a young girl because we’re constantly told that we’re not good enough.”

She continued: “And if you’re not told from a young age by the woman you look up to the most that you’re perfect and smart and special and strong and brave, it can really break you. It’s hard to re-teach yourself that love later on. That was a huge gift she gave me.”

One of Dakota’s most talked-about “naked” looks was a sheer black lace Gucci gown worn at the Kering Foundation’s Caring for Women dinner in New York City on 11 September, where the long-sleeved design featured intricate floral embroidery over a black balconette bra and underwear.

Her hair was styled in a loose up-do, accentuating the gown’s high neckline, and she accessorised with emerald earrings, a matching necklace and black open-toed heels.

Later that month, on 25 September, Dakota appeared at the Zurich Film Festival in another sheer look – a long-sleeved indigo lace gown with a tulle skirt that began below the hips.

Unlike the Gucci design, the Daddio and Materialists actress opted not to wear visible undergarments beneath the ensemble.

What our testers say: The brand’s Snail All in One Cream is a go-to for Wu. “The texture is one of my favorite things about this moisturizer: it’s slightly bouncy yet lightweight and nonsticky. It has an immediate subtle plumping effect and feels beautifully refreshing. I usually layer it over the brand’s Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence for a double dose of snail mucin (and skin that’s visibly dewy and plump),” she says.

We’re also a fan of the Pore Care Refining LHA Ampoule from Rovectin to help exfoliate and soften skin, and the Korean sunscreen formula as the last step in the routine.

What our testers say: One of our editor favorite antiaging products included in this set has to be the COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence. “I’ve used up several bottles of this essence over the years and love how it balances intense hydration with a bouncy yet lightweight formula. It’s perfect for imparting instant bounce to the dry zones of my combination skin without breaking me out or making my T-zone feel greasy,” says Wu.

Author Chetan Bhagat: I don’t, but Indians care about films because they don’t read books

by jummy84 October 15, 2025
written by jummy84

For the 90s kids thriving on Reddit today, the most pop-ular (or unpopular) author back then was Chetan Bhagat. His dealing of nonchalant characters, with rarely something unique, gained popularity for falling into familiar tropes and got much-talked about. So much so that Chetan’s books even became instant fodder for mainstream Indian cinema.

Author Chetan Bhagat talks about his new book, 12 Years, and how he managed to delve into the world of new age romances at 51.

Cut to 2025, the world has moved on, and so have the modern day characters or couples. Now, those living in the age of situationships have got a new talking-point with Chetan 2.0 returning to his OG loved-genre of love stories.

Excerpts from an interview:

Q. It’s 12 years since you last wrote about romance. The world has changed, and you’re back to writing the same genre. Why an old formula?

People love my love stories and that’s because there’s no formula in them. Each time it’s a fresh take on fresh issues. The age gap romance, in 12 Years, seemed bold and fresh and something I had not attempted yet. That’s why I felt it had something unique, which made me get back to love stories after more than a decade.

Q. So, this genre is not chosen with the agenda that it gets adapted for the screen; like your previous works?

That carries an assumption that I care a lot for the screen. I don’t care; Indians care because they don’t read books. So they are always asking me, ‘When is the movie coming?’ As if movie is the ultimate Nobel Prize! They believe that in Indian society films are up in the hierarchy of art forms; but it’s not. Films are the lazy man’s form of art consumption. I’ve had five adaptations of my works, and been part of six movies. It took a good amount of time from my life. But, I’ve reached an age where I don’t care much for that. I mean, ultimately, the joy you get from reading 2 States (his last book in the same genre), you’re not going to get from watching the movie.

Any book will trigger a reader’s imagination… I was also in a phase where I was fascinated by Bollywood. I grew up watching movies and saw the same actors call me to say, ‘We love your stories’. Of course you get carried away… But, finally, I realised that the true essence of what I enjoy doing is not that… For me, the biggest creative satisfaction come from writing a fresh story with fresh conflict and societal observations.

Q. How did you rewire yourself as a writer, to adapt to the modern age of ‘situationships’?

When my first book came out, there were no smartphones or even cellphones. I remember people used to tell me how they’d tear up the books in parts to exchange and read… Today, everybody has a phone in their pocket and is constantly entertained. So I had to change my plots too, embrace videos and social media and maybe that’s the reason I’m still around. I’ve tried to change and see the new generation non-judgmentally. Like I didn’t understand ghosting. For my value system it’s very rude. But I’m trying to come to terms with this, and the times we live in.

It’s a 51-year-old man writing a story about a 33-year-old guy falling in love with a 21-year-old girl. If not executed right, this bold story could’ve come across as creepy, strange and weird. But after 21 years of writing, I think I’ve reached a stage where I can handle this all, sensitively.
