James Cameron Says Merger Can’t Shut Down Theatrical

EXCLUSIVE: Three-time Oscar winner James Cameron remains eerie on a Netflix-Warner Bros marriage, particularly in its impact on the theatrical business and the window. However, Cameron plans to stand in the way of any steamroller making a path toward the big screen.

Deadline Awards Editor Antonia Blyth caught up with the Avatar: Fire and Wash filmmaker, who shared his feelings on the pending merger, now that Warners has accepted Netflix’s bid (yes, nothing is done yet, as Paramount has launched a hostile takeover over the 102-year-old studio).

“Look, it’s no secret that Netflix, they’ve kind of, in a funny way, they’ve had to make an accommodation with a few filmmakers like Guillermo del Toro and so on to keep a foot in theatrical, but I think it’s no secret that they want to replace theatrical,” Cameron told Deadline today.

20th Century Studios

“OK, I mean, maybe that happens, I don’t know, maybe I’m a dinosaur,” he continued, “I happen to think that there’s something sacred about the movie going experience and just the ease and broad access of streaming is not the complete answer. Maybe the universe adjusts around those two principles, but you can’t just steamroll theatrical out of existence and I’m going to stay opposed to that.”

On Monday, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos walked back his comments of recent months, and exclaimed that he’s pro-theatrical, particularly for those greenlit Warner Bros titles that are being developed and made for multiplexes. He’ll even honor the downstream window. However, sources says that Sarandos is a champion of a 17-day exclusive theatrical window, which is far apart from the 45-day window which exhibition craves. For many, 17-days theatrical to Netflix is a shotgun to the moviegoing business.

Cameron said, “Now, maybe Netflix modifies its game once it has the responsibility for the survival of theatrical as well. If they prevail in this, they’ll become a major and we’re down to half the number of majors that existed when I came into the business. This is going to sort itself out, but I’m pretty four-square on the side of let’s keep that theatrical experience alive. Clearly, I make movies for that, primarily.”

“They play well through the waterfall because a good story is a good story. You put it on the smallest screen you want, it’s still a good story. You look at it through a fricking pinhole, it’s still a good story, right?” said the director whose last movie, 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water became the third highest grossing movie worldwide at $2.3 billion and cleared $531M in profit after all ancillaries. Again, you don’t get to those numbers, Netflix, on a 17-day theatrical window. Duh.

Then bringing back to home, meaning Avatar: Fire and Ash, which runs 3 hours and 15 minutes long, the longest of any Avatar movie, Cameron added, “But the way it’s meant to be enjoyed is in a theater in 3D, in an unbroken stream of consciousness, three hours long, because that’s when the emotion will wash over you and through you in a way that it never will on a smaller screen in an interrupted flow.”

“The second you’ve got a remote and you composite, you just lost half of the impact,” Cameron continued, “Boom! Mic drop. I’ve never said it that concisely.”

Avatar: Fire And Ash opens next Friday and is expected to clear $100M+ at the domestic box office in its opening weekend.

Benicio del Toro And Cameron Diaz To Star In ‘Reenactment’

EXCLUSIVE: Fresh off his critically acclaimed performance in One Battle After Another, Benicio Del Toro has found his follow-up project as he is set to star in Reenactment with Cameron Diaz in talks to co-star. Grant Singer wrote the original screenplay and will direct.

Production is set to begin soon in Los Angeles and plot details are being kept under wraps. Molly Smith, Trent Luckinbill and Thad Luckinbill of Black Label will produce along with Patrick Wachsberger of 193, a Legendary company. Black Label’s Rachel Smith will executive produce along with Ashley Stern of 193 and LBI’s Rick Yorn and Scott Greenberg.

Patrick Wachsberger’s 193 will also handle international sales. This project reunites Grant Singer with Black Label Media and Benicio Del Toro following Singer’s 2023 directorial debut Reptile. Following its world premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, the film was released by Netflix where it topped streaming charts.

Del Toro can most recently be seen in Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another. He is repped by LBI Entertainment, Range Media Partners and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller.

Diaz can most recently be seen in the 2025 Netflix action comedy Back in Action opposite Jamie Foxx. Netflix recently reported the feature was the most watched film of 2025 so far. She is repped by LBI Entertainment and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.

Black Label is also in development on The White Van, with Singer attached to direct. He is repped by CAA, LBI Entertainment and attorney Steve Burkow.

Black Label Media is behind the highly anticipated Lynne Ramsay film Die, My Love starring Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson. The film, which they also financed, premiered at Cannes, where it was acquired by Mubi in a bidding war for $24 million. It will be released in theaters on November 7. Next up, Black Label will reteam with director JD Dillard for The Strange, for which casting is underway.

193 is a stand-alone joint venture with Legendary and has support from Legendary’s resources and divisions. At its inaugural Cannes Film Festival in 2025, 193 secured international sales for four marquee films, reflecting the quality of its burgeoning slate. These included the biggest sale of the festival for psychological thriller Die My Love, from four-time Cannes prize winner Ramsey.

193’s other 2025 Cannes sales were: drama biopic Scandalous!, the directorial debut of two-time Academy Award nominee Colman Domingo, starring Sydney Sweeney and David Jonsson; action franchise-starter The Surgeon, starring Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh, from physician and acclaimed filmmaker Roshan Sethi, reuniting Wachsberger with his John Wick collaborator Basil Iwanyk; and The Toxic Avenger, a darkly comedic reimagining of the 1984 cult classic. Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner Macon Blair wrote and directed the film, which stars four-time Emmy winner Peter Dinklage alongside Kevin Bacon, Elijah Wood, and Jacob Tremblay.

Cameron Winter Seemingly Covers Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark” for Xbox Ad: Watch

by jummy84 October 18, 2025
written by jummy84

Cameron Winter sings Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark” in the launch trailer for the ROG Xbox Ally. At least, that is what we can deduce based on the seemingly unmistakeable tenor of the singer’s voice; neither Winter nor Geese have acknowledged the song, and nobody is credited for the music in the trailer’s description. The acts’ representatives did not respond to requests for comment. Decide for yourself below.

If any doubts remain over the artist’s identity (or identities), one person we can rule out is Brian Eno, composer of the Windows 95 startup sound for Xbox owner Microsoft. In May, Eno denounced Microsoft for collaborating with the Israeli government, donated his fee for the theme to people in Gaza, and expressed solidarity with Microsoft workers who have “done something truly disruptive and refused to stay silent.”

Geese’s latest album, Getting Killed, came out last month. They have since performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and released a music video for “Au Pays du Cocaine.”

James Cameron Revisits Avatar: The Way of Water Ahead of Avatar: Fire and Ash’s Release

by jummy84 October 4, 2025
written by jummy84

During a chat with Variety, Cameron said, “We’re going through the finish of the VFX now. we have been for the last two years, but we’re really coming down to the wire now. I want to be thematically consistent about the way music was used and underscored during dialogue scenes and things like that. So I have rewatched it. It’s a pretty good ride, I have to say.”

The 2022 sequel, which earned 2.3 billion dollars globally, returned to theatres on October 2 ahead of the third film’s release. The Way of Water expanded the family saga of Jake Sully and Neytiri. In the interview, Cameron shared that he made a major story change late in the process. Interestingly, he brought back Jake’s legendary Toruk, the massive red flying creature from the original 2009 film. “I’ve always been waiting for the question, ‘Why doesn’t he just go get the big red bird and kill everybody like he used to do?’ I went, ‘Oh, he’s got to go get the bird.’ I was saving it for a later film. I was like, ‘F*** that! He should get the bird. Get the Toruk.’”

The director rewrote scenes and shot new material around this idea, saying the addition fits “beautifully” into Jake’s arc. Behind the scenes, he is also reshaping the way his team approaches visual effects. Moving away from a purely technical mindset, Cameron has fostered what he calls a “creative culture” among VFX artistes. This new approach has led to some shots being approved on first viewing.
