From Childhood Camcorder to Directorial Debut: Garrett Patten Rediscovers His Calling Behind the Camera

The path to becoming a filmmaker rarely follows a straight line. For Garrett Patten, it started with his childhood Sony camcorder and love for creating. His path detoured through over a decade in the corporate world, but has now circled back to where it began. This time, however, with the seasoned perspective of someone who understands what he’s been missing.

Patten’s early experiments were humble: two-minute shorts cobbled together on outdated Adobe editing software. But those amateur projects planted the seeds to keep him rooted in filmmaking. He surrounded himself with fellow creatives and film students while studying at the University of Southern California. He had a successful run of careers outside of the industry, but knew his heart yearned to go back to what he’s always loved doing most.

“All in all, I love filmmaking in every form writing, directing, acting, editing,” Patten reflects. “It’s a complete expression of creativity, collaboration, and truth.”

That reunion with film required strategic reentry. Rather than rushing behind the camera, Patten approached his return as a producer, working alongside talented directors on projects including “Bandit” and “Die Alone.” The experience gave him an insider’s look into the logistics and artistry of directing. He then deepened his craft at Ivana Chubbuck’s renowned acting school, initially seeking to better direct actors but discovering an unexpected passion for performance itself.

Now, Patten brings both perspectives as director and actor to his debut short film “Self Custody,” co-directed with Fernando Ferro and written by Daniel McCann. The suspense thriller stars Odette Annable, Michael Monks, and UFC champion Henry Cejudo in a story exploring redemption, technology, and the devastating price of lost access in the digital age.

The premise emerged from the startling reality that an estimated 30 to 40 percent of all Bitcoin has been lost or stolen permanently. “The idea that someone could hold a fortune worth hundreds of millions of dollars on a single drive, with no backup, no bank, no safety net,” Patten explains. “It’s complete self-reliance but also complete isolation.” Often drawing from this balance of reliance and independence with his characters and story.

That duality extends to the film’s title, which operates on two levels. Beyond the cryptocurrency concept, “Self Custody” also describes the psychological imprisonment of being trapped within one’s own mind. “Both meanings mirror my character’s journey,” Patten notes. “He’s someone searching for control and in the process, he becomes his own prisoner. The title reflects that tension between freedom and isolation, power and loss.”

Patten’s preparation process involved months of living inside his character’s world, breaking down objectives, obstacles, and emotional triggers. “To get into that headspace, I drew from moments in my own life. It’s a process of letting go of yourself and allowing the character to take over,” he explains. The intensity of that immersion often left him mentally drained on set, but he views that exhaustion as evidence of full commitment. “When you fully surrender to the role, that’s when it starts to feel real. This role took me to emotional places I didn’t know I could go. When you fully commit to a character like this, it strips away a lot of what’s comfortable—and that’s where the real growth happens.”

Having completed post-production, “Self Custody” begins its film festival run this month. For Patten, not only is this project his debut as director and actor, but it represents rediscovering his childhood spark for filmmaking. This time, however, refined by years of experience and a hard-won understanding of what it means to be a versatile filmmaker.

Sometimes the longest route home teaches you the most about where you’re going.

Srman Jain On Acting & Directing

Srman Jain On Stepping Behind The Camera As Director; Says, “It Has Taught Me More Than I Expected”

by jummy84 October 25, 2025

From charming audiences with his roles in Adaalat, Saas Bina Sasural, Dadagiri, Comedy Classes, Mere Angne Mein and Trideviyaan, Srman Jain, widely recognized for his performances on television, has seamlessly expanded his creative horizons by stepping behind the camera as a director. For him, acting and directing are not separate paths, but intertwined avenues that enrich each other.

Srman Jain On Acting & Directing

“My journey from acting to directing has been organic,” Srman explains. “Having been in front of the camera, I understand the nuances of performance and the importance of actor-director collaboration. This insight helps me create a comfortable environment for actors, ensuring authentic performances. Conversely, directing has honed my storytelling skills, allowing me to visualize scenes more effectively. Each role I play informs my direction, and each project I direct enhances my acting.”

Balancing the responsibilities of acting and directing in the same project is a challenge, but one that Srman embraces with preparation and teamwork. “Before shooting, I discuss the scene thoroughly with my co-director and the team, ensuring everyone is aligned,” he says. “During the shoot, I rely on my team to manage the technical aspects, allowing me to focus on my performance. This collaboration ensures that both acting and directing receive the attention they deserve.”

When asked whether directing or acting is more challenging, Srman is candid. “Both roles come with their unique demands. As a director, the responsibility to oversee the entire project and ensure the vision is realized can be overwhelming. As an actor, delving deep into a character’s psyche and delivering a compelling performance is equally demanding. But the satisfaction of seeing a project come to life, whether through acting or directing, makes it all worthwhile.”

Directing has also transformed Srman’s understanding of storytelling and collaboration. “Every department, from cinematography to sound, plays a crucial role in telling a story,” he says. “I’ve learned to trust my team and value their input, understanding that a successful project is the result of collective effort. This perspective has enriched my approach to acting, making me more attuned to the overall vision of a project.”

For Srman Jain, creativity is not limited to one role. Acting informs his direction, direction sharpens his acting, and together they form a holistic journey of storytelling, collaboration, and continuous learning.

Bollywood star couple Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt are still winning hearts both on and off screen. Only a few days after celebrating Diwali with their family members, the couple was seen together in Mumbai, radiating their characteristic charm and effortless flair. The duo, who are popular for their friendly behavior with the paparazzi, smiled and hugged photographers outside a building, creating another furor among fans online.

Alia maintained a relaxed yet trendy look, wearing an oversized white tee with black trousers, her hair tied up in a simple, low bun. Her no-makeup, fresh face showcased her natural beauty and easy-going nature. Ranbir took a simple approach to dressing with a black hoodie and pants, a side sling bag, and his now-famous moustache providing a touch of character to his outfit. While their destination for the outing is not revealed, fans did not waste any time in showering the couple with praise, complimenting their grounded attitude and chemistry.

The week had started earlier with Alia and Ranbir posting peeks at their cozy Diwali celebrations, which soon went viral. The pair turned their Diwali update into a picture-perfect family album. In one of the adorable photos, Ranbir had Alia in his arms and both were smiling for the photo. Alia was looking stunning in a light pink chikankari kurta and lime-green skirt, while Ranbir opted for a traditional white chikankari kurta, revealing the couple’s sophisticated festive look.

Adding a light-hearted touch to her festive posts, Alia also posted unguarded pictures and videos with her sister Shaheen Bhatt and close friend Ayan Mukerji, director of Brahmāstra. The three were caught up smiling and making silly faces at each other, treating fans to a glimpse of their happy Diwali moments. Alia captioned her post, “Dillwali Diwali. Happy Diwali to you and yours.”

On the professional front, both actors have an exciting lineup of projects ahead. Alia is gearing up for her action-spy film Alpha under Yash Raj Films’ spy universe, as well as Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s much-anticipated period drama Love & War, co-starring Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal, slated for a March 2026 release. “The way you hold that camera, you’re doing it from your heart.” HBO Max has revealed the official trailer for a documentary film titled Armed Only With a Camera: Life & Death of Brent Renaud, made by his brother Craig Renaud. This first premiered at the 2025 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year – where it won the Audience Award for Best Documentary. It’ll be streaming on HBO Max later this October. Armed Only With a Camera is a powerful tribute to a war photojournalist who risked everything on the front lines. On March 13th, 2022, doc filmmaker Brent Renaud was killed by Russian soldiers – the first American journalist to die while reporting on the war in Ukraine. His younger brother & collaborator, Craig Renaud, recovered Brent’s body and his final recordings from Ukraine and brought them back home to Arkansas. As Brent’s journey to his final resting place unfolds, the doc film chronicles the years he and his brother spent covering some of the world’s most dangerous conflicts as photojournalists. Brent’s journey home also serves as a window into what drove him as a journalist, and how he viewed the world through his lens. This film is dedicated to Brent and all journalists who use cameras to fight for peace. They’re more important than ever.

The vérité film includes harrowing footage of the brothers’ reporting from around the globe, including time embedded with the Arkansas National Guard in Iraq, the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, the war in Somalia, immigrants’ journeying from Honduras to the United States, and Brent’s reportage upon arriving in Ukraine. Despite bearing witness to devastating loss & suffering, he fearlessly covered stories from the front lines, while empathically capturing the impact on innocent people. Unflinching in its depiction of death, loss, and the toll of war, the film is Brent’s ultimate testament to the critical value of wartime reporting & tribute to journalists providing on-the-ground, life-threatening coverage of world events. As journalism is becoming one of the most dangerous professions, Armed Only With a Camera is dedicated to Brent & all devoted journalists who use their cameras to work for truth & understanding.

Armed Only With a Camera: Life & Death of Brent Renaud is directed by the brothers Craig Renaud & Brent Renaud (posthumously) as a “Renaud Brothers Film”. They’re also co-directors of the films Warrior Champions, Shelter, Meth Storm, and other TV series and many doc projects previously. Produced by Juan Arredondo, Craig Renaud & Brent Renaud; in association with DCTV. This initially premiered at the 2025 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year. HBO Docs will release Armed Only With a Camera: Life & Death of Brent Renaud streaming on HBO Max starting on October 21st, 2025 this fall. Anyone want to watch it?
