Bruce Springsteen ‘Nebraska ’82: Expanded Edition’ Review

by jummy84 October 19, 2025
written by jummy84

There are good albums and great albums, and then there are holy records — worlds you enter as if into a dream and emerge with spirit and neurochemistry changed. Bruce Springsteen‘s 1982 classic Nebraska is one of those. Conceived at the crest of the Reagan years when the singer was in a dark place and rethinking his purpose, it was a pause and a hard reboot, a lo-fi set of home recordings that sounded like nothing in his catalog, and a calm before the storm of Born in the U.S.A. “I was after a feeling,” he wrote of Nebraska in his memoir, “a tone that felt like the world I’d known and still carried inside me.” The result was a hauntingly unsettled piece of art that many people hold very dear.

But people always crave more, and given that A) Nebraska is mostly an album of spruced-up demos, B) it came from same writing sessions that later produced Born in the U.S.A., and C) superfans and E Streeters alike have been fueling rumors for years about a shelved Electric Nebraska LP, it’s amazing that it’s taken this long for said mythic lost album to surface. Clearly, we have Jeremy Allen White and Deliver Me From Nowhere to thank.

Anyway, here it is. Does it support the myth? Yes and no. Yes, in that there were indeed recordings made in 1982 of some Nebraska songs in fuller arrangements with Bruce’s E Street bandmembers. And no — because strictly speaking there is no Electric Nebraska per se, notwithstanding Springsteen’s equivocations on the point (as reported in this magazine) and the fact that one disc in this five-disc set is titled Electric Nebraska.

Nevertheless: as art history, theological inquiry, and a secular deep dive into the Brucebase rabbit-hole, Nebraska ‘82 is rich material, and for serious Springsteen fans, an essential listen. The first two discs are flecked with revelations. One disc contains outtakes from the original 4-track demos, made by Springsteen in his house in Colts Head, NJ, with extras from a follow-up acoustic studio session at The Power Station that tried, and failed, to better those recordings.

Editor’s picks

The keystone is the demo of “Born in the U.S.A., which appeared on 1998’s epic loosie compilation Tracks. It opens this set and resonates differently here, showing how much of a piece it was with Nebraska’s vision and where Springsteen’s narrative songwriting was at. It also shows how wrong it would’ve been for Nebraska’s final tracklist — its anthemic chorus, yearning to be free, would’ve felt misplaced. The song’s next iteration, a raw guitar rocker on the Electric Nebraska disc, shows its evolution. Both versions showcase the song’s sharp social critique and conflicted pride more effectively than the final megahit version. But musically, neither is quite as compelling.

Similarly, at least in hindsight, you can hear the party jam in a softly insinuating draft of “Pink Cadillac,” the future Natalie Cole hit and Born in the U.S.A. b-side. It’s sexy and vaguely creepy, a weirdly intimate voice message. Elsewhere, the addition of corner-church piano and bass cloak the exquisite chill of Nebraska’s title track, while a stiff groove and overheated vocals diminish the articulate desperation “Atlantic City” (Levon Helm and The Band would pull off a more convincing band arrangement years later, as would Springsteen & Co.) Two feral punk-rockabilly versions of Born in the U.S.A.’s seething “Downbound Train” speak to Springsteen’s admiration of The Clash.

But a pair of never-issued songs on the outtakes set are the set’s standouts. “Child Bride” is a disturbing draft of what would transform into Born in the U.S.A.’s “Working on the Highway,” which turned the narrative’s moral thicket, presumably involving an underage girl, into a sort of landlocked sea shanty that, like the album’s title track, drowns out its own narrative. (An early version of “Highway” here obfuscates the narrator’s transgression.) As America attempts to reclaim its pride by whitewashing its unflattering histories, Springsteen’s struggle to balance light and dark on these pointedly American recordings is tremendously poignant. “Gun in Every Home” is another balancing act, a striking outtake that ended up shelved. “I moved to the suburbs yeah, just me and my family/ On the block I live, you got everything that a man would need to want/ Two cars in each garage and a gun in every home,” Springsteen sings flatly. (“When I wrote it, I thought it was a little hysterical,” he admits in the liner notes. “Now of course it seems totally natural.”)

Related Content

The third and fourth discs — audio and video, respectively — document a (mostly) solo acoustic full-album performance of Nebraska, recorded this past summer sans audience at the Count Basie Theatre, Red Bank, NJ. The film, by Thom Zimny, is about what you’d expect: b&w, moody lighting, the artist striding in slo-mo onto the stage of the empty theater (trigger warning: may spur Covid lockdown flashbacks), then sitting down to play the songs straight through. There’s no attempt to hide the staging, although the accompanying musicians are mostly unseen. You can catch a fleeting glimpse of Larry Campbell in the wings offstage during “Atlantic City,” playing mandolin in the shadows; on “Used Cars,” Charlie Giordano adds glockenspiel fireflies in silhouette.

In the liner notes, Springsteen says he came to this latter-day performance fairly cold, and was struck anew by the songs, by how “their weight impressed upon me.” It’s a powerful performance, though 40-plus years on, as a dude in his 70s, he delivers them as a storyteller outside the story — a bit like Springsteen performing Springsteen on Broadway. On the original Nebraska LP, remastered for the set’s final disc, the performances felt more like method acting by a man possessed, physically inhabited by the stories he told.

Trending Stories

Springsteen has said Nebraska is his greatest work, and it’s interesting that, in surveying the original LP and the other vault recordings included here, he seems amazed at what his young self was channeling back then. He uses the word “shocked” more than once in the liner notes. He says “I don’t know where I was coming from for those arrangements,” and “I don’t know what was influencing me at the time.” He concludes: “Most of this stuff is pretty mysterious to me.”

Indeed, mystery is at the core of Nebraska’s magic — the mystery of what drives human beings toward darkness and self-destruction, the mystery of a rich country disrespecting its people, the mystery of an artist reinventing himself with a coal-hot songwriting hand, whispering in his own ear to make the mystery manifest. It did, and when you hear the final Nebraska, the set’s early takes and re-recordings, even the good ones here, are blown away like leaves in a punishing autumn wind. The falsetto howls at the end of “Atlantic City” become ghostly again, not vocal effects deployed variously across the sessions. Many of Nebraska’s songs would become American classics, and it says a lot that Levon Helm’s “Atlantic City” is one of his greatest performances, ditto Emmylou Harris’ version of “My Father’s House.” It says a lot, too, that their versions hewed close to those on the finished Nebraska album. Because Bruce got them dead right.

Cameron Winter Seemingly Covers Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark” for Xbox Ad: Watch

by jummy84 October 18, 2025
written by jummy84

Cameron Winter sings Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark” in the launch trailer for the ROG Xbox Ally. At least, that is what we can deduce based on the seemingly unmistakeable tenor of the singer’s voice; neither Winter nor Geese have acknowledged the song, and nobody is credited for the music in the trailer’s description. The acts’ representatives did not respond to requests for comment. Decide for yourself below.

If any doubts remain over the artist’s identity (or identities), one person we can rule out is Brian Eno, composer of the Windows 95 startup sound for Xbox owner Microsoft. In May, Eno denounced Microsoft for collaborating with the Israeli government, donated his fee for the theme to people in Gaza, and expressed solidarity with Microsoft workers who have “done something truly disruptive and refused to stay silent.”

Geese’s latest album, Getting Killed, came out last month. They have since performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and released a music video for “Au Pays du Cocaine.”

Springsteen film strips away the myth to depict ‘Bruce, the man’

LONDON, – U.S. rock star Bruce Springsteen made a surprise appearance on the London Film Festival red carpet on Wednesday, lending his support to the cast and makers of a new biographical movie about his life.

“Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere” stars “The Bear” actor Jeremy Allen White as the multiple Grammy winner. But instead of focusing on his high-flying career, it offers a raw portrayal of the person behind the music.

Directed and co-written by Scott Cooper, the film is based on the book of the same name by Warren Zanes. It follows a young Springsteen, on the cusp of hitting the big time, struggling with his inner demons and childhood trauma while writing the stark 1982 album “Nebraska”.

White said the drama, which also delves into Springsteen’s fraught relationship with his father, played by Stephen Graham, shows a difficult but decisive period in the rocker’s life.

“I think at the core of it so much is about that longing for familial connection and the relationship between him and his father,” said White. “I think he made decisions during this period in his life that allowed him to live the life that he wanted to live.”

The film also features “Succession” star Jeremy Strong as Springsteen’s supportive, longtime manager Jon Landau.

“It’s a film obviously about Bruce and about the making of ‘Nebraska’, but it’s about repairing trauma through art and confronting depression and mental health issues,” said Strong.

“I think it’s an incredibly courageous story to tell about someone as mythologised as Bruce, to tell the story of Bruce, the man,” Strong said.

The movie marks the first time the musician’s life has been depicted on the big screen. Springsteen, 76, was closely involved in the production.

“Very early on, he listened to me singing his songs. He said, ‘you sing very well. You sound like me, not just like me. You’re making the songs your own and I want the whole process to feel that way,'” White recalled. “Without that sort of blessing, I don’t think I would have been able to do what I did.

“He’s been very generous in every way. He gave me the guitar I learned to play on. I still have it,” White said.

The film begins its global cinematic rollout on October 22.

Watch Bruce Springsteen and Jeremy Allen White Discuss Their New Movie on Kimmel

by jummy84 October 3, 2025
written by jummy84

Last night (October 2), both Bruce Springsteen and Jeremy Allen White sat down on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to discuss their respective work careers and where those paths now cross: the upcoming biopic Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere. During the TV show segment, White talked about what it was like to portray the Boss while Springsteen watched him on set, Springsteen talked about his upcoming Nebraska ’82 box set with the long-rumored electric version of the album, and more. Watch it go down below.

Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere hits theaters on October 24. The film follows Springsteen during the creation of his 1982 album Nebraska. The movie also stars Jeremy Strong as Springsteen’s manager; Marc Maron as producer Chuck Plotkin; Johnny Cannizzaro as Steven Van Zandt; Paul Walter Hauser as guitar tech Mike Batlan; Stephen Graham as Bruce Springsteen’s father, Doug; Odessa Young as a love interest name Faye; Gaby Hoffman as Springsteen’s mother, Adele; and David Krumholtz as Columbia Records executive Al Teller.

Long sought-after by fans, Electric Nebraska is the informal title of the album that Springsteen and the E Street Band recorded in 1982 from a collection of demos for his follow-up to The River. Preferring his originals, Springsteen ended up scrapping the full-band versions and instead released the stripped-down versions we now know as Nebraska – with a few electric songs being held back to appear on the later release Born in the U.S.A. Nebraska ’82: Expanded Edition arrives October 17 via Sony.

Read Mark Richardson’s review of Nebraska and see where the album lands in “The 200 Best Albums of the 1980s.

Bruce Springsteen film ‘Deliver Me From Nowhere’ promises “new information to even his most ardent fans”

The forthcoming Bruce Springsteen film Deliver Me From Nowhere will contain “new information to even his most ardent fans”.

The movie charts the period in The Boss’s life when he recorded his sixth album ‘Nebraska’ (1982), with The Bear star Jeremy Allen White portraying the legendary artist. It is set to arrive in cinemas on October 23.

During a new interview with Empire, writer and director Scott Cooper opened up about how he approached making Deliver Me From Nowhere – which Springsteen has described as “an anti-biopic”.

“[Springsteen] said to me, ‘Scott, the truth about yourself isn’t always pretty’,” Cooper told the publication.

“We discussed that this was going to be a film so far removed from the mythology of the rock star. The thing that was most important to him was that this would be no hagiography.”

He continued, teasing that even Springsteen diehards would learn something new: “There’ll be things in this film that will be new information to even Bruce’s most ardent fans – not covered in his Broadway show, or in documentaries, or in his memoir.”

Cooper added: “And he never once asked me to sand off the rough edges. But would you expect anything else from Bruce Springsteen? This man who’s the reluctant moral conscience of America?”

Springsteen recently revealed why he gave Deliver Me From Nowhere the go-ahead, despite it charting a “difficult” time in his life.

“You know, it’s really not a biopic,” he said. “It just takes a couple years out of my life when I was 31 and 32, and looks at them really at a time when I made this particular record, and when I went through some just difficult places in my life, you know. And, I’m old and I don’t give a fuck what I do now.”

The singer-songwriter explained that he and Cooper “had a very specific idea, particularly, of what we were gonna attempt to do” with the film.

Cooper previously praised White’s portrayal of The Boss, saying that the actor had “an intensity of vulnerability and authenticity”. He said: “Jeremy has two things that really, for me, make up Bruce Springsteen, and one is humility. And the other is swagger.”

Critics have largely praised White’s performance in the first reviews of Deliver Me From Nowhere, with one calling his transformation “nothing less than stunning”. Another writer described the movie as an “unorthodox” biopic, while acknowledging Cooper’s “choices that hinder Nowhere from being a truly great film”.

Alongside White, the film stars Succession‘s Jeremy Strong as Springsteen’s manager and producer Jon Landau, Adolescence‘s Stephen Graham as his father Douglas, and The Staircase‘s Odessa Young as love interest Faye Romano.

Springsteen visited White on set in New Jersey late last year before meeting the child actor who plays his younger self, Matthew Anthony Pellicano.

In other news, next month will see Springsteen finally release the legendary electric version of ‘Nebraska’. He has already previewed the collection with a demo version of ‘Born In The U.S.A.’.

Watch Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson Sing National Anthem at NFL Game

The British musician performed ahead of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ home game against the Seattle Seahawks

Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson offered his take on the American national anthem at Pittsburgh’s Acrisure Stadium on Sunday.

The English musician was asked to perform the song at the Pittsburgh Steelers’ first home game of the season against the Seattle Seahawks, noting on Instagram that it was “a huge honour” to be invited. Dickinson left the field to chants of “U.S.A! U.S.A!”

“I’ll let you in to a secret,” Dickinson said in a recent interview on podcast The Charismatic Voice. “I’ve got to sing the national anthem in Pittsburgh for the Pittsburgh Steelers. They’ve asked me to do this. I’m going to do it a cappella and stuff, and as long as you start at the right place, you’re good to go.”

Fans were entertained by the NFL‘s decision to enlist a musician from the U.K. to perform America’s anthem at a very American sport. “The most random thing I saw today was a British man singing the American national anthem,” one commenter wrote on Instagram. Another added, “Why is a Brit singing the American national anthem? Especially at this current time?”

Dickinson is currently on the North American leg of his Mandrake Project solo tour. It continues on Tuesday in Toronto before heading to Montreal later this week. The tour wraps in Los Angeles on Oct. 5 with a show at the Wiltern.

Iron Maiden is celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2025, with a new documentary about the metal greats is slated to be released later this year. Directed by Malcolm Venville, the as-yet-untitled film will dig into Iron Maiden’s remarkable 50-year history and legacy, telling the story from the perspective of both band and fans (including famous ones like Javier Bardem, Lars Ulrich, and Gene Simmons). The film will also feature interviews with key members from throughout the band’s run, including the last interview with original vocalist Paul Di’Anno, who died last year.

Emma Heming Willis says her children’s lives have been turned ‘upside down’ by the impact of Bruce Willis’ dementia fight

The model and influencer, 47, has been acting as a carer for her ailing Die Hard actor husband, 70, since he was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia, and has now used her new book to describe how the condition is changing daily life for their young daughters, Mabel and Evelyn.

Emma said in her new book The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope, and Yourself on the Caregiving Path: “The truth is, Mabel and Evelyn’s daily lives were being turned upside down. For example, with FTD and other forms of dementia, some people become more sensitive to noise, which can cause distraction, confusion, and agitation.

“So I had everyone tiptoeing around the house to keep it as peaceful and serene as possible. This meant playdates were obsolete and forget about sleepovers.”

Emma has also used her book to reflect on the “loud and crazy and fun” times Bruce has enjoyed with Mabel, 13, and Evelyn, 11.

Father-of-five Bruce is also father to Rumer, 37, Scout, 34, and Tallulah, 31, who he had during his marriage with actress Demi Moore, 62.

Emma wrote about how she recently decided to move Bruce into a separate home with a professional care team, saying their household had become one where “no one was thriving” amid his health fight.

She said the new arrangement allowed the family to “find a better balance and fit” for everyone.

Speaking to Good Morning America on 9 September, Emma defended the decision after receiving social media criticism.

She said: “It’s really not up for a debate. Now I know that Bruce has the best care 100 percent of the time. “His needs are met 100 percent of the time, as well as our two young daughters’. So I’m not gonna take a vote on that.”

Emma added she expected criticism but insisted it was “the safest and best decision — not just for Bruce, but also for our two young girls”.

Emma’s book The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope, and Yourself on the Caregiving Path is out now.

Bruce Springsteen and Donald Trump Both Attend U.S. Open Finals

by jummy84 September 7, 2025
written by jummy84

Sworn enemies Bruce Springsteen and President Donald Trump were both on hand Sunday in New York City to watch the men’s finals at the U.S. Open. The outing marked the first time the singer and president had been in the same place since their public sparring earlier this summer.

The match between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner was delayed nearly 30 minutes Sunday due to security measures that caused traffic issues because of Trump’s presence in the Rolex box, his arrival at Arthur Ashe Stadium drew boos. When the match finally did start, the venue was still less than half full because of the additional screening.

However, as the crowd started settling into their seats, TV cameras spotted Springsteen in attendance, sitting in a celeb-filled section along with Sting, Ben Stiller, and more:

Though Springsteen has been a vocal critic of Trump since he first ran for the presidency in 2015, he really seemed to draw the president’s ire when the songwriter blasted him at the inaugural date of his 2025 European tour.

While onstage, Springsteen took a moment out of his set to rail against Trump, calling the administration “corrupt, incompetent, and treasonous.”

Trump, obviously, reacted in a totally calm and normal way. “Springsteen is ‘dumb as a rock,’” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social, “and couldn’t see what was going on, or could he (which is even worse!)? This dried out ‘prune’ of a rocker (his skin is all atrophied!) ought to KEEP HIS MOUTH SHUT until he gets back into the Country, that’s just ‘standard fare.’ Then we’ll all see how it goes for him!”

Still not over it, three days later, Trump took another shot at Springsteen in an even crazier post that also referenced Bono and Oprah Winfrey. “HOW MUCH DID KAMALA HARRIS PAY BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN FOR HIS POOR PERFORMANCE DURING HER CAMPAIGN FOR PRESIDENT?” he wrote. “WHY DID HE ACCEPT THAT MONEY IF HE IS SUCH A FAN OF HERS? ISN’T THAT A MAJOR AND ILLEGAL CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTION? WHAT ABOUT BEYONCÉ? …AND HOW MUCH WENT TO OPRAH, AND BONO??? I am going to call for a major investigation into this matter. Candidates aren’t allowed to pay for ENDORSEMENTS, which is what Kamala did, under the guise of paying for entertainment.”

Trending Stories

And perhaps, as everybody in the entire world except for Trump expected, the music community rallied behind Springsteen to show their support for him. Neil Young, Pearl Jam, Bono, Jason Isbell, and more all spoke out in solidarity with their friend in the days that followed.

In tennis lingo, I believe that would be a game, set, match.

Bruce Loose, Singer-Bassist for Fliipper, Dead at 66

by jummy84 September 6, 2025
written by jummy84

Bruce Loose, the longtime singer-bassist of Flipper, has died at age 66. The San Francisco punk act has influenced countless other bands, including Nirvana, and even featured Krist Novoselic as their bassist for a brief time.

A posting on the “Who Cares Anyways SF” Instagram page reads, “After a prolonged struggle with life, Bruce ‘Loose’ Calderwood of Flipper passed away from an apparent heart attack earlier this week at the age of 66.” His passing was also confirmed on Flipper’s official Facebook page.

After the band formed in 1979, Loose almost immediately replaced original singer Ricky Williams. He shared vocal and bass duties with Will Shatter, who died in 1987. Loose remained with Flipper until 2015, when he decided to walk away from the band. In the years since, Jesus Lizard vocalist David Yow has fronted Flipper.

Flipper were a big influence on Kurt Cobain, who wore a self-made Flipper T-shirt during Nirvana’s appearance on Saturday Night Live and in the video for “Come As You Are.”

Novoselic joined the band from 2006 through 2009, and they often performed Nirvana’s ‘Scentless Apprentice,” which Flipper covered for a 2000 compilation.

In addition to Nirvana, Flipper have influenced R.E.M., the Melvins, Jane’s Addiction, and others.

Our condolences go out to Bruce Loose’s family, friends, and bandmates during this difficult time.
