bitchy | Royalist: ‘Angry’ Prince William felt like his family ‘sabotaged’ his Brazilian trip

written by jummy84

Prince William spent about five full days in Brazil and it was a fiasco from start to finish. That’s what no one can admit – for all of the whining and crying about thunder-stealing, Billy’s Big Brazilian Flop Tour was full of awkward, undignified photo-ops, an utter lack of charisma, and a big, keen speech which was so hypocritical and out of touch, longtime royalists are newly contemptuous of William and the monarchy. The man posed on a private plane, en route to an environmental conference, in an attempt to prove that he can read!! Like, that alone should tell you everything you need to know. But, according to Tom Sykes’ sources, William is full of fury, rage and bile over seemingly everyone in his family successfully upstaging him, especially his father! LMAO.

The Royalist has learned that Prince William “was left hurt and angry” after his father — of all people — stole the spotlight from him last week, staging a headline-grabbing investiture for David Beckham as William’s Earthshot Awards were kicking off in Brazil. For William, who has spent five years turning the prize into his signature platform, the timing, even though the investiture was long scheduled, was more than a clash of diaries; it was seen, according to friends, as a deliberate snub. The decision by King Charles to knight Beckham on Tuesday— fourteen years after his name was first floated for the honor — was greeted by William’s friends with disbelief.

“Of all weeks,” one friend of William’s told The Royalist, “this was the one week he needed the family to be pulling for him. Instead, it felt like they were pulling against him. He was left hurt and angry.”

Instead of the seamless royal choreography William envisioned [for his week in Brazil], his trip unraveled into a succession of distractions. “The family sabotaged it from beginning to end,” the William friend said. “It was pathetic, like the worst of the bad old days.”

On the day his plane landed, Prince Harry’s team announced a parallel, quasi–royal tour of Canada, scheduled—miraculously—to overlap with William’s itinerary. Meghan Markle’s PR team then leaked news of her “return to acting” to The Sun midweek, instantly derailing British coverage of the Earthshot Prize.

“In any normal world,” said one newspaper executive, “William would have been the royal story of the week. But Beckham and Meghan’s comeback swallowed the headlines. The entire British Royal press corps was in Brazil, and somehow none of it mattered.”

The irritant of the Sussexes is old and familiar; what stung William much more, I am told, was the betrayal from inside the tent.

“David Beckham had waited fifteen years,” said a former courtier. “And they had to do it this week? When you think of how gracious William had been, paying tribute to his father’s work in his speech, it’s a slap in the face. I’m afraid Charles still can’t bear not to be the center of attention. If he couldn’t be at COP30 himself, then nobody else was allowed to have the moment.”

The King’s allies insist it was a coincidence without malice. “His Majesty is immensely proud of his son’s work,” a friend of Charles’s told the Daily Beast. “Investitures are scheduled months in advance.”

One friend of the King’s, however, did concede that there is an “increasingly delicate” father-son dynamic, dramatically worsened by William’s open contempt for the shambolic way his father handled the ex-Prince Andrew crisis and continues to handle the Harry issue.

Charles, however, has no intention of fading into the background. He insists on maintaining a full public schedule, sometimes to the alarm of Camilla and his doctors, and he guards the symbols of kingship—audiences, investitures, the odd glittering photo call—as fiercely as ever. Friends say that having waited his whole life for this role, he’s not about to start taking instruction from anyone, even his son.

[From The Royalist Substack]

I often say Charles got the heir he deserves, but it’s also true that William got the father he deserves too. My god. I also thought it was funny that Charles did David Beckham’s investiture during William’s Brazilian Flop Tour, but I figured the same thing – that it was something which had been on the schedule for a while, and it’s just the way things lined up. This makes it two different “things” of which William was in the dark: Buckingham Palace knew about Beckham’s investiture AND they were informed of Harry’s trip to Canada. From the sound of it, BP did not inform William or Kensington Palace at all. Or maybe they did send a memo and Illiterate Bill just missed it. As for William thrashing around “hurt and angry” at family betrayals… the worse option is that Harry, Meghan and Charles were all helping William by distracting the press from writing about the Brazilian fiasco.

This is just a mere glimpse of how people reacted when they actually paid attention to Billy’s Brazilian Flop Tour.

Nice But Dim Bill is talking unadulterated shit. It is acquiescence that has brought us to the gates of hell, when the likes of him fly in on a private jet to drive along a road built from the chopping down of 100,000 trees to tell us to tighten our belts. Are we mental? https://t.co/ZPE035iP1o

bitchy | Prince William looked unfortunate playing beach volleyball with Brazilian kids

Don’t get me wrong, I love volleyball and beach volleyball. Volleyball is my jam and it’s super-fun to play and to watch. I do not blame Prince William for putting a beach volleyball session on his Rio de Janeiro itinerary whatsoever. But this is exceptionally bad staff work – letting William play beach volleyball in jeans/trousers, and not shutting it down when William was flailing all over the beach and making those crazy faces as he tried to play the game with little kids. Yikes.

Anyway, these are photos from William’s first day in Rio, where he checked off a bunch of appearances and events in a steady clip. He received the keys to the city (Rio) from the mayor. He visited Sugarloaf Mountain. He did a meet-and-greet and took selfies with Brazilians. He went to a football pitch and kicked a ball. And yes, the volleyball photo-op.

The real story of William’s first day in Brazil is that his brother stole his thunder by announcing a trip to Toronto this week. Harry will be highly visible and doing events on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. Also on Wednesday: William’s Earthshot Prize ceremony. Then later in the week – I don’t know if it’s on Thursday or Friday – William is supposed to make a “landmark” speech at COP30. While William is surely seething about the head-to-head competition, he should be thanking Harry. More people will pay attention to William’s Rio stuff because of the comparison with his brother. Plus, if those volleyball pics are a harbinger of things to come, William should find Harry’s Toronto visit invaluable as a distraction.

The Telegraph’s Victoria Ward was seething about Harry’s announced trip, as were other royal reporters and royalists. Ward pointed out something I had already assumed: while Harry gave his father/Buckingham Palace a heads up about his trip to Toronto, Harry doesn’t tell Kensington Palace jacksh-t. The question then becomes… why didn’t Buckingham Palace inform KP about Harry’s trip? Meanwhile, Tom Sykes devoted a whole Royalist Substack piece to Harry “dramatically reigniting his long-running war” with Huevo. Sykes also called it “needlessly antagonistic,” which is a fancy way of saying “hilarious.” Sykes actually made one good point though – it’s not like Harry has scheduled something at the same time as the family’s Remembrance Day events. All Harry is doing is some pre-Remembrance events, and he’ll presumably stay somewhat quiet on Remembrance Sunday.

bitchy | Prince William’s demands for a vegan menu offended a renowned Brazilian chef

by jummy84 October 29, 2025
written by jummy84

Prince William just bungles around, offending people regularly. Even with his current busywork scheme, Earthshot, he manages to constantly get it wrong. Earthshot is truly an exercise in ego – it was only in the third year of the ten-year prize scheme when William invited the actual nominees and winners to the prize ceremony. He uses Earthshot to center himself at every turn, and the winners don’t even get the full $1 million prize all in one go – it’s parceled out over five years, because nothing fuels long-term investment in green tech like a paltry sum doled out in a bizarre prize scheme with the express purpose of embiggening a slumlord. Well, William is getting criticized this week for insisting that Earthshot’s Rio ceremony should be completely vegan. He offended a Brazilian chef who uses a local fish, pirarucu, in many of his dishes. Saulo Jennings is the chef, and he’s also U.N. gastronomy ambassador and advocate for sustainability. Jennings is loudly offended by what he was asked to do.

When Saulo Jennings heard he would be cooking for an heir to the British throne, the Brazilian chef knew he wanted to showcase the star ingredient of the Amazon: a huge, fleshy river fish called pirarucu. That heir, Prince William, was hosting an environmental awards ceremony by the Earthshot Prize for 700 guests in Rio de Janeiro in early November, his first visit to Brazil. Creating the canapés seemed like the perfect job for Mr. Jennings, an acclaimed chef from the Amazon known for using sustainable ingredients from the rainforest. But there was a catch: The menu had to be 100 percent vegan, Mr. Jennings said he was informed by the Earthshot organization.

At first, convinced he had misunderstood, the chef said he offered to add a vegan option to the menu. Then, he said, when he was told he could not use any of the cherished river fish species central to his dishes and to the Amazon region’s cuisine, he grew offended.

“It’s like asking Iron Maiden to play jazz,” Mr. Jennings said in an interview on Friday. “It was a lack of respect,” he added, “for local cuisine, for our culinary tradition.”

After much coaxing by the museum that will host the event, Mr. Jennings said he created a vegan menu inspired by Amazonian ingredients like cassava root, jambu leaf and Brazil nuts. But by then, negotiations over the catering of the event had broken down. And now, he is out as the caterer for the event, scheduled for Nov. 5. “I have nothing against vegans or British people,” he said. “But I don’t want to abandon my culinary mission.”

The chef’s indignation at the demand made headlines in Brazil, as many read the menu request as a snub to the rich culinary tradition of the Amazon region, where the United Nations’ annual climate conference will be held. William, along with heads of state, scientists and policymakers from around the world, will attend. Mr. Jennings was perplexed, too. He had cooked with no problem for the coronation ceremony of King Charles III, William’s father, at the British Embassy in Brazil. “I made fish and chips,” he said, “but with pirarucu.”

A spokesman for William declined to comment on the situation. But a person close to the climate event, who asked to remain anonymous in order to discuss the sensitive issue publicly, said that the prince had not been involved with the menu. The person said that the event for the Earthshot Prize, which awards millions of dollars to recipients for their contribution toward environmentalism, had asked for vegetarian, rather than vegan, food because it always serves that type of menu as part of its commitment to sustainability. In the end, Mr. Jennings, the person said, was ultimately not selected to cater the event because of budgetary constraints, not because of any resistance to creating a fish-free menu.

Mr. Jennings built his career arguing that true sustainability is anchored in the traditional culinary techniques that have been used for generations by Indigenous people in his home region. “We eat whatever the forests give us, whatever the rivers give us,” said Mr. Jennings, who is a U.N. gastronomy ambassador. “Some days, we eat fish. Other days, we eat nuts and açai,” he added. “This is also sustainable.”

In a few weeks, Mr. Jennings will have another opportunity to show off his region’s culinary traditions. He has been hired to cook for the Norwegian and Chinese delegations at the climate conference. And, at the request of the Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, he will cater a dinner reception for heads of state, he said. What will be on the menu? “With all due respect,” he said, “there will be fish.”

[From The NY Times]

The thing about pirarucu is that Brazilians are incredibly proud of that particular species of fish, and Brazilians have spent years successfully bringing back the pirarucu population after decades of overfishing. The story of the pirarucu is the story of local leadership, national pride in their local delicacies, and community-led conservation. The story of the pirarucu has become a renowned example of how green activism can go hand-in-hand with capitalism. William and his people just thought they would stagger into Rio half-assed, with no one having read any briefing memo. While I doubt William made this particular call, he surrounds himself with lead-footed dolts who behave like their boss, saying and doing insensitive and offensive sh-t every other week. As soon as a UN culinary ambassador protested their menu choices, they should have said, okay, tell us what’s wrong, what do we have to change to make this work. Instead, they probably looked down their noses at the “locals” and rolled their eyes at a Brazilian chef who truly wanted to show off the bounty of Brazil.

“When it hurts, I come here and scream it out loud.” 🇧🇷 Netflix has revealed an official trailer for a Brazilian film titled The Son of a Thousand Men, based on highly acclaimed Brazilian novel. Ready for streaming in November this fall. A father without a son, a son without a father, and a shared dream. A village of one-of-a-kind encounters that turn into unlikely stories… Starring Rodrigo Santoro and inspired by the best-selling book by Valter Hugo Mãe, this Netflix film The Son of a Thousand Men, made by Daniel Rezende, shares a fable about solitude, love, and acceptance. Crisóstomo, a 40-year-old fisherman, decides to search for what he lacks: a son. Upon meeting Camilo, a 14-year-old boy, he ends up changing the lives of excluded and rejected characters, forming a non-conventional family united by a love for simple things. In addition to Santoro, it also stars Johnny Massaro, Rebeca Jamir, Juliana Caldas, featuring Miguel Martines as Camilo. It was filmed between Búzios, along the coast of Rio de Janeiro, and Chapada Diamantina, in Bahia. This has some absolutely amazing cinematography by DP Azul Serra. I’m hooked – I will be watching this.

Together, the four of them learn about the meaning of family and the purpose of sharing life with others. The Son of a Thousand Men, also titled O Filho de Mil Homens in Portuguese, is written directed by the Brazilian filmmaker Daniel Rezende, director of the films Bingo: The King of the Mornings, Monica and Friends, and also the series “Nobody’s Looking” and “Turma da Mônica” previously. “Caramelo was lucky to have found you.” “I’m the lucky one.” Netflix has revealed an official trailer for a Brazilian dog movie called Caramelo, arriving to watch on Netflix worldwide starting in October this fall. The film is directed by Brazilian director Diego Freitas, and features a famous dog as the main actor. A chef and a caramel-colored mutt become best friends after a life-changing encounter. On an emotional journey, they will laugh and cry together, and also teach us valuable lessons. The film stars Rafael Vitti as Pedro and the canine star named Amendoim. The first film with Brazil’s iconic mutt dog, Caramelo is a drama that will make you both laugh and get emotional by celebrating the unique bond of companionship between pets and humans. The cast also includes Arianne Botelho, Noemia Oliveira, Ademara, Kelzy Ecard, Bruno Vinicius, Roger Gobeth, & Olívia Araújo, plus a special appearance by chef Paola Carosella. This looks super sweet and very cheesy, but good – an uplifting doggie movie to bring everyone a bit of joy.

Near the entrance on 59th street, horse-drawn carriage drivers vie for the attention of tourists, while across the road, serious-looking people in business attire idle in front of the Carnegie Hotel, presumably waiting for someone important.

The Brazilian singer and songwriter Liniker, who has just landed in muggy New York to perform at Lincoln Center’s Brazil Week, has questions: Who are the suits going to meet? Are they famous? And is anyone shelling out upwards of $100 for the ride? The more she thinks about it, the less likely it seems that she’ll arrive at an answer, so she opts to capture this tableaux on her film camera instead.

As we enter Central Park to find a spot to sit down, she points at a squirrel gripping the side of a tree trunk, and stops to take a picture before it beetles upwards and disappears into the canopy. When another one crops up — this time on the grass — she snaps another photo.

“It’s like they’re making little waves with their bodies,” Liniker says in Portuguese, wearing a white tiered, maxi skirt and a matching white top. Here in New York, the artist gets to feel anonymous in a way that no longer feels possible back home. In her native Brazil, where her songs rack up millions of streams per month, she has become something of a pop phenomenon.

After training as an actress, Liniker first made a name for herself as the singer for the band Liniker e os Caramelows, but has since left the group. In 2022, her first solo record, the soulful Indigo Borboleta Anil, earned her a Latin Grammy award, making her the first trans woman to receive the prize. Her latest LP, last year’s CAJU, plays with a more varied sonic palette, moving into decidedly pop territory. Melding pagode, hip-hop, samba, and electronica, it has expanded her audience significantly, and pushed her further into the spotlight.

Editor’s picks

Born in Araraquara, a city north of São Paulo, Liniker, who was named after the British goalie Gary Lineker (it was her soccer-loving uncle’s idea), grew up in a creative family. She found a continuous source of support and inspiration in her mother, a samba dancer who taught her that art could be a form of resistance. “In spite of everything she went through raising me and my brother by herself,” Liniker says, “she always gave me the chance to live my life the way I wanted to live it.”

When Liniker and Fejuca, one of her trusted collaborators and a co-producer on both of her solo records met, they bonded over their similar upbringings. “She comes from a big, musical family and I do too,” he says, calling from his car in between studio sessions in Rio de Janeiro. “And so we both experienced these Black Brazilian gatherings where people listen to everything: Tim Maia, Marvin Gaye, Os Racionais.”

In the early stages of making CAJU, a concept album based on an imaginary one day trip to Japan, Liniker, Fejuca and co-producer Gustavo Ruiz, knew they wanted to tap into this past, and make the work feel nostalgic. “So we recorded the whole thing using analog tape,” Fejuca says.

At the park, Liniker tells me she also wanted the work to feel “cinematic.” The trio looked for a way to create a sense of continuity between songs. “If you listen closely, you’ll hear everyday sounds in all the tracks: there’s a door closing, keys, rain, footsteps, the Japanese flight attendant whose voice opens the record,” she says.

Some of these compositions start in Liniker’s journals. “I keep a diary,” she says, “and I also write poems and songs, and letters, mostly by hand.” Her lyrics are personal, introspective, and often a little tongue-in-cheek. “Have you memorized the number of tattoos I have?” she asks a lover, in earnest, in the title track “CAJU” over a smooth R&B beat. “How many shows are in my schedule? What my favorite album is? How much my heart weighs?”

During the pandemic, the singer Moses Sumney would occasionally go live on Instagram and add people who requested to join. One day, Liniker sent him a request and they struck up a conversation. While he had heard her name around, he wasn’t familiar with her music. Then thousands of Brazilians flooded in and started commenting. “And I thought to myself, ‘I’m clearly very late to this because this person is a huge star,’” he recalls.

After they got off the call, Sumney checked out her music and became a fan. “It’s cool seeing how she combines R&B music with a truly Brazilian aesthetic,” he says. “What she does is so beautiful.” The two ended up becoming pen pals and when Sumney was in Brazil earlier this year, Liniker invited him to see one of her shows in Salvador, Bahia. “It was like seeing Brazilian Beyoncé,” Sumney says. “The hair whips, the outfits, the crowd.”

The next time I see Liniker, she’s running around the stage at Damrosch Park in Lincoln Center in an asymmetrical glittery dress and knee high boots, her band members shimmying behind her in lime green outfits. People in the audience are moving, jumping, and singing along. Most aren’t sitting on the chairs the organizers set up for them earlier in the day. It’s clear this is music you can dance to.

Trending Stories

Liniker feels emotional being at a venue where so many prominent Brazilian artists have performed over the years. “It’s such an achievement for any of us to be able to cross the ocean to get to any place that isn’t the place we’re from,” she said to the crowd in Portuguese. “That applies to us musicians, but it also applies to anyone who has immigrated to a country they weren’t born in dreaming of a better life. When we’re up here, we’re also dreaming a different dream, and I’m so glad that dream fits in the mouths of so many people today.”

Lately, while reflecting on her career, it’s dawned on her that she never wants to take anything for granted. “What an honor,” she told the crowd as the night drew to an end and she prepared to leave the stage. “I’m so happy.”

“I am under a death threat.” Neon has revealed the first look teaser trailer for the acclaimed Brazilian film titled The Secret Agent, the latest from Brazilian filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho. This originally premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival a few months ago to many positive reviews, and it went on to win both Best Actor and Best Director awards at the fest. Next playing at Telluride & NYFF. In 1977, a tech researcher flees from a mysterious past and returns to his hometown of Recife in North Brazil in search of peace. He soon realizes that the city is far from being the safe refuge he seeks. Wagner Moura stars as the “secret agent” Marcelo. Master filmmaker Kleber Mendonca Filho teams up with renowned Brazilian actor Wagner Moura – giving an extraordinary, career-defining performance – to craft a thrillingly unpredictable, playfully shape-shifting epic steeped in history even as it feels contemporary, paying affectionate tribute to the movies of Filho’s youth while unfolding against the backdrop of political turmoil and palpable danger. Neon has this set to open in theaters in November, hoping it’ll be a major player during the awards season.

Here’s the first teaser trailer for Kleber Mendonça Filho’s film The Secret Agent, direct from YouTube:

Amid the raucous revelry of Carnival week, a widower named Marcelo (Wagner Moura) arrives in 1977 in Recife, Brazil, a city as vibrant as it is violent. A researcher who finds himself an unwitting target in the heart of the dictatorship’s political maelstrom, Marcelo is a man on the run from mercenary killers, from ghosts of the past & from the ruthless, mischievously militant spirit of Brazil in 1977. In the midst of these mounting threats, Marcelo, with the help of a mysterious woman named Elza and her compatriots in the country’s growing underground resistance, remains primarily focused on escaping Brazil with his young son. The Secret Agent, also known as O Agente Secreto in Portuguese, is written and directed by acclaimed Brazilian writer / director Kleber Mendonça Filho, director of the films Neighboring Sounds, Aquarius, Bacurau, Crítico, Pictures of Ghosts, and many other short films. It’s produced by Emilie Lesclaux, Wagner Moura, Kleber Mendonça Filho. This initially premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. Neon debuts The Secret Agent in select US theaters starting on November 26th, 2025 this fall. Intrigued?
