These children’s books from 2025 make great holiday gifts for every age group

Rhyming and repetition make complicated words and ideas easier to understand. In the back, readers will find a mirror with a message that they’re a little hero, too. Cartwheel Books, $9.99.

— “Everywhere You Are” by Victoria Monét, illustrated by Alea Marley. This sweet book reaffirms a parent’s love for their child even when they’re not physically together. Grammy winner Monét’s musicality shines in this lullaby, illustrated in a colorful, swirly, star-speckled outer space. G.P. Putnam’s Sons Books For Young Readers, $18.99.

— “Bitty and Bub, Best Buds” by Janee Trasler. Five short, silly comics follow fun-loving friends Bitty and Bub. It’s a great introduction to reading comics, using speech bubbles in simple panel progressions. Holiday House, $14.99.

— “Grandmother Moon” by Wunneanatsu Lamb-Cason, illustrated by Trisha B. Waters. A girl’s grandma explains Grandmother Moon to her. The author’s Indigenous storytelling tradition is extended by dreamy full-page paintings. Includes a Moon Calendar and a guide to reading the calendar on the scales of Turtle’s back. Beaming Books, $18.99.

— “Dory Fantasmagory 7: Center of the Universe” by Abby Hanlon. Book 7 in the silly illustrated series that’s a perfect bridge into chapter books. In this story, Dory has a new rival. Dory’s zany antics and odd friends could elicit laughter from any reader. Dial Books, $17.99.

— “Maker Girl and Professor Smarts” by Jasmine Florentine. So what if they don’t have superpowers? These supersmart best friends are ready to take on supervillains! This hilarious, hybrid graphic chapter book includes science-backed instructions for making sorbet and cardboard grappling hooks. MIT Kids Press, $19.99.

— “The Weirdies” by Michael Buckley, illustrated by Forrest Burdett. From the creator of “Sisters Grimm,” these 10-year-old triplets and the world they live in are weird — and highly entertaining. Pencil-hatching illustrations accompany Lemony Snicket-esque humor and fourth-wall breaking. Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, $14.99.

— “The Poisoned King” by Katherine Rundell, illustrated by Ashley Mackenzie. It’s up to 12-year-old Princess Anya to save the dragons and her kingdom. The hotly anticipated Book 2 of the Impossible Creatures series is a fantasy adventure driven by an unyielding belief in the power of goodness. Knopf Books for Young Readers, $19.99.

— “Bunns Rabbit” by Alan Barillaro. The other rabbits fear that Bunns’ short ears are a bad omen. Full of heart, this mature, tender chapter book showcases descriptive writing and stunning, dramatically lit illustrations. Candlewick, $18.99.

— “The Story of My Anger” by Jasminne Mendez. Told in verse and as a play, this empowering story follows Yuli, a junior at a Texas high school, as she learns how to handle racism, the pressure to shine, and stress at home with a widowed mom living with a chronic illness. Dial Books, $19.99.

— “The House of Quiet” by Kiersten White. A Gothic mystery that explores class struggle and what it means to make a positive impact in the world. The stunning ending pulls the pieces together without a single detail wasted. Delacorte Press, $19.99.

— “When We Were Monsters” by Jennifer Niven. Arlo and Effy trade off narrating this genre-bender of dark academia, murder mystery, thriller and romance. A “Frankenstein” motif throughout the novel conveys themes of monsters and fate vs. free will. Knopf Books for Young Readers, $20.99.

— “Leave It on the Track” by Margot Fisher. After her dads die in a fire, Moose moves to a new state to live with her older half-sister, who convinces her to try roller derby. Fisher’s debut grabs you and doesn’t let go, tackling grief, being LGBTQ and finding community. Dutton Books for Young Readers, $19.99.

— “Take Up Space, Y’all” by Tess Holliday and Kelly Coon. A body positivity book with guides and tips, from finding your fashion to having a healthy relationship with food to dealing with labels. It always defers to consulting your doctor for medical needs like skin problems and mental health challenges. Running Press Kids, $13.99.

— “I Wish I Didn’t Have to Tell You This: A Graphic Memoir” by Eugene Yelchin. The sequel to “The Genius Under the Table” also stands on its own, chronicling a Jewish man’s escape from Soviet Russia in the 1980s with a unique art style that incorporates photographs. Yelchin’s mom and grandmother provide comic relief with their melodrama and uncanny wisdom. Candlewick, $22.99.

Gary Oldman as Jackson Lamb in
TV & Streaming

Books, Cast, Premiere Date, Trailer, More Details

by jummy84 October 29, 2025
written by jummy84

Slow Horses just dropped its Season 5 finale, and the Apple TV adaptation of Mick Herron’s Slough House book series will be back for two more seasons.

The sixth season of Slow Horses has already been filmed, and based on the pattern of previous seasons, chances are it could be released in the fall of 2026.

The drama starring Gary Oldman has gotten early renewals from the start, with, for example, the Season 5 pickup coming just days after the Season 3 finale began streaming. Now that all of Season 5 is streaming, below, we’re taking a look at everything we know so far about Slow Horses Season 6, including the book on which it will be based, a premiere date, and more.

When was Slow Horses renewed for Season 6?

Apple TV announced that Slow Horses will be back for a sixth season in October 2024, less than a week after the fourth season’s finale began streaming. It will consist of six episodes.

“Audiences around the world have fallen in love with the Slow Horses, and I’m delighted that Gary Oldman will be leading this star-studded cast on another acerbic and action-packed adventure,” said Jay Hunt, creative director, Europe, Apple TV+, in a statement at the time.

When will Slow Horses Season 6 premiere?

It’s too soon to tell. Season 1 was released in April 2022, Season 2 in December 2022, Season 3 in November and December 2023, Season 4 in September and October 2024, and now Season 5 is set for September and October 2025. Season 6 has already been filmed, so it should be released sometime in 2026, likely in the fall.

On which book is Slow Horses Season 6 based?

Season 6 will actually cover two books, the sixth and seventh in Mick Herron’s series, Joe Country and Slough House.

The Joe Country synopsis reads as follows: “In Slough House, the London outpost for disgraced MI5 spies, memories are stirring, all of them bad. Catherine Standish is buying booze again, Louisa Guy is raking over the ashes of lost love, and new recruit Lech Wicinski, whose sins make him an outcast even among the slow horses, is determined to discover who destroyed his career, even if he tears his life apart in the process. Meanwhile, in Regent’s Park, Diana Taverner’s tenure as First Desk is running into difficulties. If she’s going to make the Service fit for purpose, she might have to make deals with a familiar old devil… And with winter taking its grip, Jackson Lamb would sooner be left brooding in peace, but even he can’t ignore the dried blood on his carpets. So when the man responsible for killing a slow horse breaks cover at last, Lamb sends the slow horses out to even the score.”

And the Slough House synopsis is: “At Slough House — MI5’s London depository for demoted spies — Brexit has taken a toll. The “slow horses” have been pushed further into the cold, Slough House has been erased from official records, and its members are dying in unusual circumstances, at an unusual clip. No wonder Jackson Lamb’s crew is feeling paranoid. But are they actually targets? With a new populist movement taking hold of London’s streets and the old order ensuring that everything’s for sale to the highest bidder, the world’s a dangerous place for those deemed surplus. Jackson Lamb and the slow horses are in a fight for their lives as they navigate dizzying layers of lies, power, and death.”

What is Slow Horses Season 6 about?

According to Apple TV, it “sees the Slow Horses on the run as Diana Taverner embroils them all in a fatally high-stakes game of retaliation and revenge.”

Who’s in the Slow Horses Season 6 cast?

The Season 5 cast consists of Gary Oldman (Jackson Lamb), Kristin Scott Thomas (Diana Taverner), Jack Lowden (River Cartwright), Saskia Reeves (Catherine Standish), Rosalind Eleazar (Louisa Guy), Christopher Chung as (Roddy Ho), Aimee-Ffion Edwards (Shirley Dander), Ruth Bradley (Emma Flyte), James Callis (Claude Whelan), Tom Brooke (J.K. Coe), and Jonathan Pryce (David Cartwright). Chances are we’ll see almost all, if not all, back; Whelan is no longer First Desk, but this is not the end of him in the books.

Is there a Slow Horses Season 6 trailer?

Not yet.

Author Chetan Bhagat: I don’t, but Indians care about films because they don’t read books

by jummy84 October 15, 2025
written by jummy84

For the 90s kids thriving on Reddit today, the most pop-ular (or unpopular) author back then was Chetan Bhagat. His dealing of nonchalant characters, with rarely something unique, gained popularity for falling into familiar tropes and got much-talked about. So much so that Chetan’s books even became instant fodder for mainstream Indian cinema.

Author Chetan Bhagat talks about his new book, 12 Years, and how he managed to delve into the world of new age romances at 51.

Cut to 2025, the world has moved on, and so have the modern day characters or couples. Now, those living in the age of situationships have got a new talking-point with Chetan 2.0 returning to his OG loved-genre of love stories.

Excerpts from an interview:

Q. It’s 12 years since you last wrote about romance. The world has changed, and you’re back to writing the same genre. Why an old formula?

People love my love stories and that’s because there’s no formula in them. Each time it’s a fresh take on fresh issues. The age gap romance, in 12 Years, seemed bold and fresh and something I had not attempted yet. That’s why I felt it had something unique, which made me get back to love stories after more than a decade.

Q. So, this genre is not chosen with the agenda that it gets adapted for the screen; like your previous works?

That carries an assumption that I care a lot for the screen. I don’t care; Indians care because they don’t read books. So they are always asking me, ‘When is the movie coming?’ As if movie is the ultimate Nobel Prize! They believe that in Indian society films are up in the hierarchy of art forms; but it’s not. Films are the lazy man’s form of art consumption. I’ve had five adaptations of my works, and been part of six movies. It took a good amount of time from my life. But, I’ve reached an age where I don’t care much for that. I mean, ultimately, the joy you get from reading 2 States (his last book in the same genre), you’re not going to get from watching the movie.

Any book will trigger a reader’s imagination… I was also in a phase where I was fascinated by Bollywood. I grew up watching movies and saw the same actors call me to say, ‘We love your stories’. Of course you get carried away… But, finally, I realised that the true essence of what I enjoy doing is not that… For me, the biggest creative satisfaction come from writing a fresh story with fresh conflict and societal observations.

Q. How did you rewire yourself as a writer, to adapt to the modern age of ‘situationships’?

When my first book came out, there were no smartphones or even cellphones. I remember people used to tell me how they’d tear up the books in parts to exchange and read… Today, everybody has a phone in their pocket and is constantly entertained. So I had to change my plots too, embrace videos and social media and maybe that’s the reason I’m still around. I’ve tried to change and see the new generation non-judgmentally. Like I didn’t understand ghosting. For my value system it’s very rude. But I’m trying to come to terms with this, and the times we live in.

It’s a 51-year-old man writing a story about a 33-year-old guy falling in love with a 21-year-old girl. If not executed right, this bold story could’ve come across as creepy, strange and weird. But after 21 years of writing, I think I’ve reached a stage where I can handle this all, sensitively.

Bhumika Chawla Believes Reading Is Therapeutic And Books Are Irreplaceable

by jummy84 October 10, 2025
written by jummy84

Bhumika Chawla, best known for her memorable performances in films like Tere Naam, Run, and Dil Ne Jise Apna Kaha, has always been admired for her grace and calm presence both on and off screen. Her last release was Salman Khan’s Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan, and she will soon be seen in Kesar alongside Arbaaz Khan and Dipshikha Nagpal.

Away from the arc lights, Bhumika finds peace in one of her oldest companions — books. A self-confessed reader, she believes that while technology has made stories more accessible, nothing can truly replace the charm of reading.

Bhumika Chawla: “Books can never be replaced — reading is therapeutic”

Talking about books and how they are irreplaceable, Bhumika Chawla said, “Books can never be replaced, though yes, people do find it easier to listen to audio versions.” She continued, “For me and many like me, reading is therapeutic — it’s a joy that can’t really be described in words. Ironically, books are words on paper, but only avid readers will understand that feeling.”

She adds that while some prefer the tactile feel of a physical book, others enjoy the convenience of a Kindle, especially when travelling. She said, “There’s a section of people who still love the feel of a proper book in hand, and some prefer Kindle since it’s easier to carry.”

For Bhumika, reading is also about cultivating focus — something that modern distractions often take away. She shared, “Reading brings in focus, while other things tend to make our concentration a little less. For instance, you can’t read a book while working, jogging, or cooking — but you can listen to an audiobook while doing those. That’s just my opinion. To each his own — whatever works for everyone is good, as long as the purpose of going through a book is served.”

Bhumika Shares Her Favourite Titles

Among Bhumika Chawla’s favorite reads are titles that mirror her thoughtful and introspective personality. The list include titles like Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom, Mr. God, This Is Anna by Fynn, Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts, The Stationery Shop of Tehran by Marjan Kamali, and Holy Cow by Sarah Macdonald.

Grounded, reflective, and eloquent — Bhumika Chawla continues to remind us that in an age of screens and speed, the simple joy of holding a book and immersing oneself in its world remains timeless.

Adam Kay books in order: from fiction to non-fiction

by jummy84 September 23, 2025
written by jummy84

You’ve definitely heard of Adam Kay following the success of his book, This Is Going To Hurt, which was later adapted into a BBC hit series.

What you may not know about him is that he also had a series of successful children’s novels to teach young ones about their bodies and medical marvels.

Though Kay has predominantly worked across the world of non-fiction, he’s stepped into the fictional space with his debut novel, A Particularly Nasty Case, which is a crime thriller about a doctor wrapped up in a serial murder mystery world. It just so happens to be the September book for the Radio Times Book Club, sponsored by Dr. Oetker Ristorante.

There’s one clear connecting theme between Kay’s work in all its formats; it’s always set in the world of medicine.

Whether you’re looking for a recommendation for a little one or something for yourself, here’s the definitive guide to Adam Kay’s work in order.

‘SNL’ Books Bad Bunny, Role Model, Sabrina Carpenter

by jummy84 September 19, 2025
written by jummy84

Artists both familiar and new will be on display when NBC’s Saturday Night Live returns for its 51st season this fall.

Bad Bunny will serve as host and Doja Cat as musical guest for the debut episode on Oct. 4. Bunny is about to wrap a historic residency in his home country of Puerto Rico in support of his latest album, DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS, which is up for 12 Latin Grammy awards. Doja Cat’s new album, Vie, is due Sept. 26.

Role Model will perform on the Oct. 11 episode, which will be hosted by former cast member Amy Poehler. The singer/songwriter broke through last year with his album Kansas Anymore and enjoyed a high-profile opening act slot for Gracie Abrams. His song “Sally, When the Wine Runs Out” recently topped Billboard‘s Adult Alternative Airplay chart.

Sabrina Carpenter will host for the first time and perform for the second on the Oct. 18 edition, five days before the start of a new North American leg of her massive Short n’ Sweet Tour. Carpenter’s second album in a year, Man’s Best Friend, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 earlier this month.

Bad Bunny and Carpenter both participated in specials celebrating the 50th anniversary of SNL earlier this year, with the former performing two songs at a music-focused Radio City Music Hall event and the latter duetting with Paul Simon on Simon & Garfunkel’s “Homeward Bound” during a retrospective taped in the fabled Studio 8H at Rockefeller Center.

Bad Bunny also served as the musical guest for the 50th season finale episode in May, hosted by Scarlett Johansson.
