Zosia Mamet Comments on Matthew Weiner After Revelations in New Book

by jummy84 September 12, 2025
written by jummy84

After inspiring a heap of headlines about a former verbally abusive boss who led her to quit one of the biggest shows on television, Zosia Mamet touched briefly on her past experience with Matthew Weiner during a conversation at 92NY on Thursday.

Earlier this week, in an exclusive excerpt from her new collection of essays Does This Make Me Funny?, Mamet opened up about being screamed at by a major showrunner in the early days of her career; she left set that day and told her agents she was quitting the show, despite being scheduled for more episodes. The actress doesn’t name the show or the showrunner in her book, but the internet was quick to claim that it was Weiner on the set of Mad Men, as Mamet appears in seasons four and five.

In a chat with former Girls co-star Andrew Rannells, Weiner’s name came up as the two discussed how improv-friendly their show had been compared to other projects. Rannells commented, “We both worked with Matt Weiner, who was like strict, very strict about language.” Mamet responded, “Very strict,” before quickly moving on to comparisons about working on network TV shows like Parenthood.

Elsewhere in the conversation, Mamet explained how she chose what stories to include in the book, noting, “I think for the most part, a lot of these stories were really — even if they’re funny at times — pretty traumatic. I think that they were things that had happened that sort of went away into a box in my head and were never touched again, so they were almost like fossilized. And so I think when I went through the Rolodex of memories in my brain, they were the ones that were the most fully formed and they seemed like the easiest to write about.”

Mamet also commented that she wasn’t trying to “write a shocker” and “I really didn’t think about the fact that [the essays] were that revealing until I had to do the audiobook.” When she had to read her words aloud for the first time, “I was like, ‘Who let me publish this?’” she joked, noting that no one besides her editor and her manager had read it before it went to print.

The actress teased, “I literally didn’t process the fact that this book was coming out until like Sunday night.”

America’s Book Banning Madness Doc Film ‘The Librarians’ Trailer

by Alex Billington

“This is about taking away rights.” “This can’t be America.” An official trailer has debuted for an important documentary film called The Librarians, about the librarians fighting the fascist book banning in America right now. The acclaimed doc will get a global release with backing of a coalition of supporters – including Film Forum, Dogwoof, 8 Above, PBS’ Independent Lens, BBC Storyville, ROCO Films, Kanopy and a cohort of organizations defending the freedom to read including PEN America, the American Library Association, & Penguin Random House. The Librarians traverses small-town USA capturing the shared experience and heroic actions of besieged librarians who are at the center of what has become a large-scale coordinated extremist movement against freedom of information. Faced with a choice to either fall in line or defend our most fundamental rights, these brave librarians have made the choice to risk everything and be the first line of defense against current attacks on our democratic values. The film is not only a timely call to action against the attempts to curtail access to often life saving info for students, it is also an urgent reminder of what is at stake if the marginalized voices at the core of the issues are silenced. Rock on. I just hope it helps.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Kim A. Snyder’s doc film The Librarians, direct from YouTube:

The Librarians Poster

Librarians emerge as first responders in the fight for democracy and our First Amendment Rights. As they well know, controlling the flow of ideas means control over communities. In Texas, the Krause List targets 850 books focused on race and LGBTQia+ stories – triggering sweeping book bans across the U.S. at an unprecedented rate. As tensions escalate, librarians connect the dots from heated school and library board meetings nationwide to lay bare the underpinnings of extremism fueling the censorship efforts. Despite facing harassment, threats, and laws aimed at criminalizing their work – the librarians’ rallying cry for freedom to read is a chilling cautionary tale. The Librarians is directed by American doc filmmaker Kim A. Snyder, director of films I Remember Me, Welcome to Shelbyville, Newtown, and Us Kids previously, plus other short docs. Produced by Maria Cuomo Cole, Jana Edelbaum, Janique L. Robillard, & Snyder. This initially premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Snyder’s The Librarians doc will debut in select US theaters starting October 3rd, 2025 this fall. For more info, visit the film’s official site.

Must See Trailer for Poetic Film ‘The Summer Book’ with Glenn Close

“I’m trying…” “I won’t be here forever.” Music Box Films has revealed an official US trailer for the lovely, must see film titled The Summer Book, directed by filmmaker Charlie McDowell (of The One I Love, The Discovery, Windfall). This premiered at various festivals last year including London, AFI Fest, Stockholm, Camerimage, and many others. This peaceful and poetic film is set on wonderful little island in Scandinavia. It is the inspirational tale of a young girl and her grandmother spending a summer on a small, uninhabited island in the Gulf of Finland. Her father is struggling with the death of his wife while his daughter’s curiosity grows. Adapted from Tove Jansson’s beloved novel, The Summer Book is a delicate account of growing up and growing old, beautifully filmed on 16mm in majestic natural light. This fantastic little film stars Glenn Close as Grandmother, Anders Danielsen Lie as Father, and the delightful Emily Matthews as Sophia, with Ingvar Sigurdsson as Eriksson. This is such a special film, and I am very happy to be quoted in this trailer from a glowing review I wrote last year. I’ve been recommending it to everyone… Catch it in theaters.

The Summer Book Trailer

The Summer Book Poster

9-year-old Sophia (Emily Matthews) spends the summers at her family’s seasonal home on a tranquil isle in the Gulf of Finland, but this will be the first summer without her mother. Her father (Anders Danielsen Lie) remains numbed by grief, while her grandmother (Glenn Close) guides her on a giddy, winding path towards young adulthood. With a sense of infinite possibility and a tender regard for the wonders of the natural world, Sophia and her grandmother explore the terrain, celebrate midsommar, and test the limits of faith in the face of life’s many storms. The Summer Book is directed by acclaimed American filmmaker Charlie McDowell, director of the films The One I Love, The Discovery, and Windfall previously, and eps of “Tales from the Loop” & “Dispatches from Elsewhere”. The screenplay is written by Robert Jones. Based on the book of the same name written by Tove Jansson. It’s produced by Aleksi Bardy, Kevin Loader, Kath Mattock, Charlie McDowell, Duncan Montgomery, Alex Orlovsky, Helen Vinogradov. This first premiered at the 2024 London Film Festival last year (read our review). Music Box Films opens McDowell’s The Summer Book in select US theaters starting on September 19th, 2025 coming soon. Who wants to watch the film?

Alberta Book Ban Paused After Margaret Atwood Mocks Measure

Alberta Book Ban Paused After Margaret Atwood Mocks Measure

by jummy84 September 3, 2025
written by jummy84

Try to ban The Handmaid’s Tale and you’ll face the literary scorn of Margaret Atwood. Alberta’s government has learned as much from its now paused censorship measure.

In a short story published online this past weekend, Atwood slammed MAGA-ish Premier Danielle Smith, “selfish rapacious capitalism,” Ayn Rand fanboys, and the hypocrisy of paying “no attention to what Jesus actually said about the poor and the Good Samaritan and forgiving your enemies.” For former radio host Smith, Atwood saved a special bit of Serena Joy (if you’ve seen the Emmy winning Hulu series that ran from 2017 to 2025, you’ll get it): “So they lived happily ever after. But while they were doing that The Handmaid’s Tale came true and Danielle Smith found herself with a nice new blue dress but no job. The end.”

Proving you should never doubt the power of the pen (or in this case, the post), and that most bullies can’t take a punch, Premier Smith’s government today announced via an email to school boards the ban was being halted “until further notice.” Education and Childcare Minister Demetrios Nicolaides stated that more info about the ban/not ban would become clear over the next week or so.

While widely-acclaimed, The Handmaid’s Tale was among the 200 books slated to be pulled from the school shelves in the oil-rich Canadian province because of alleged sexually explicit material.

In July, the Education and Childcare Ministry of Smith’s government ordered local school boards to institute the policy (read the original NSFW Ministerial Order here) by October, a month into the school year. Under the policy, ninth graders and below wouldn’t be allowed any access to such books, while those in Grade 10 and up would only be allowed to read such material if it was deemed educationally appropriate.

The often-explicit Bible was exempt, but along with Atwood’s 1985 novel on a theocratic takeover of the USA , Aldous Huxley’s classic Brave New World and Maya Angelou’s autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings were among the 200 books the Edmonton Public School board said last week were going under lock and key because of the new provincial policy.

That just wasn’t on with Margaret Atwood.

The prolific 85-year-old scribe took to social media on August 31 to offer a “piece of literature by me, suitable for seventeen-year-olds in Alberta schools, unlike — we are told — The Handmaid’s Tale. (Sorry, kids; your Minister of Education thinks you are stupid babies.)”

That prologue of sorts might be the most blunt, literally and figuratively part of the 196-word yarn, which was picked up, reposted and liked all over the globe. You can read it here:

Here’s a piece of literature by me, suitable for seventeen-year-olds in Alberta schools, unlike — we are told — The Handmaid’s Tale. (Sorry, kids; your Minister of Education thinks you are stupid babies.)

John and Mary were both very, very good children. They never picked…

— Margaret E Atwood (@MargaretAtwood) August 31, 2025

Not long after her government walked back its book ban measure, for now, Premier Smith Tuesday said the revamped goal was to take books with pornographic images out of the libraries and to leave the classics alone.”

On this side of the border, the classics and soon to be classics are not being left alone, in a potentially good way.

Handmaid’s Tale star and EP Elisabeth Moss will executive produce a sequel based on Atwood’s 2019 book The Testaments alongside THT collaborators Bruce Miller and Warren Littlefield. Hulu hasn’t given a release date yet for the series, but production on Season 1 started back in April.

Wonder if a certain Western Canadian politician may be making an inadvertent cameo?

Emma Heming Willis can’t wait to go on tour to promote her book about caregiving.

Emma Heming Willis can’t wait to go on tour to promote her book about caregiving

The model, 47, had been looking after her ailing husband Bruce Willis, 70, since he was diagnosed with dementia in 2023 and this week announced he had been moved to a separate home to receive professional help.

She has since been trolled for allowing the move while promoting herself as a caregiver.

But she has hit back at critics on Instagram, with her page revealing she can’t wait to go on her book tour to promote her upcoming book The Unexpected Road.

The book will tell of her path to becoming Bruce’s caregiver and she will give her first talk to promote the book on 8 September.

Emma wrote in what is her latest Instagram post: “One month out from taking The Unexpected Journey on the road, and I’m so excited to share with you the dates and places I’ll be.

“What I’m most looking forward to is being in a room with other caregivers. “That was one of the many reasons I wrote this book, to build deeper connection with those walking this path alongside me and my family.

“I hope to see you there and I can’t wait to connect in person. (Blue heart emoji.)

“Tour stops and details are in my bio or at emmahemingwillis.com under the “book” section. (Book emoji.) #theunexpectedjourney #caregiversupport #booktour.”

Emma hit back at trolls by saying she is being “judged quickly and unfairly” for the way she has been caring for Bruce.

She recently said it was the “hardest decision” to have him moved to a separate home where he now lives with a full-time care team.

Emma is bringing up their daughters Mabel, 13, and Evelyn, 11, and said on Instagram: “Bruce would want that for our daughters. He would want them to be in a home that was more tailored to their needs, not his needs.”

She added: “Too often, caregivers are judged quickly and unfairly by those who haven’t lived this journey or stood on the front lines of it.

“Sharing openly may invite opinions, but more importantly, it creates connection and validation for those actually navigating the realities of caregiving every day.”

Her book on caregiving is coming out on 9 September, and she says in a synopsis of the tome: “Caring for yourself while caring for someone else is one of the hardest, most heartbreaking challenges you’ll ever face. It’s easy to lose your sense of self.

“Through my own experience and insights from leading experts, I want to help care partners feel less alone, better prepared, and empowered to navigate this journey with strength and support. When you care for yourself first, you’re better able to care for your person.

“This isn’t just about surviving – it’s about finding connection, resilience, and even moments of joy along the way. You don’t have to do this alone.”

All prose, no cons: These book groups will help you hit your reading goals

by jummy84 August 29, 2025

Of course, you want to read more. Everybody does. It’s the most virtuous habit of our time. Online, Bookstagrammers are doing 30-second reviews of exciting titles that just dropped. On YouTube, there are endless streams of people acting out a novel’s intro, leaving off at the cliffhanger, urging viewers to “go read the rest”. There are online and offline book clubs, travelling libraries, silent-reading communities, swaps, challenges and all kinds of shortcuts.

Book communities make reading seem like a group project everyone wants to be a part of. (SHUTTERSTOCK)

Reading culture isn’t dying, says Manik Jaiswal, who runs one of India’s most active reading initiatives. It’s just taken a new shape, one that keeps up with screentime, scrolling, wishlists and travel goals. When people say they’re trying every trick in the book to get others to read, they’re not kidding. Take a look.

The book buffet

Some people believe reading is about quality, not quantity. Others head to Bookchor’s Lock The Box sales with glee. This is where customers pay a set price for an empty box, and then carry away as many pre-owned books as the box fits. For those who haven’t figured out their tastes yet, and can’t afford new books in every genre, this is a bonanza. For those who know what they like and want more of it, cheaply, it’s a bonanza too. “Our Lock The Box events turned books into a treasure hunt,” says founder Meenal Sharma.

The event travels nationwide. They’ve just wrapped up Indore and are on their way to Shimla. At every stop, readers find a surprise – a pre-owned title that’s been out of stock in their city, or a promising one they’d never heard about. And of course, Lock The Box also buys old books in each city, so the pickings are never the same.

On Insta

Nashik resident Neelanjali uses only her first name and operates @BooksMakeMeWhole, a six-year-old account devoted to books she hopes more people would read. She knows she can’t force anyone into it, so her grid is laid out as a series of mini listicles: Books that live in my head rent free, Indian authors that are too good to miss, and so on. “Not everyone reads long reviews, but those who do are more likely to pick up the book that resonates with them.” And, like any other influencer, she drops tips on her reading routine and for getting out of a slump.

The account has 61K followers and, from the comments, they all seem to know each other and welcome new voices. “The best way to convince someone to pick up a book is by being honest and open about how it made me feel, how I connected with the story, or how it impacted me personally,” she says. She’ll also share a favourite quote or excerpt to get her followers hooked on to a story.

On the web

Online book clubs are starting to connect book lovers who don’t really want to leave their comfy couch. Divya Jain and Snigdha Gautam set up The Indian Book Club in the pandemic, and have continued with it long after the lockdowns were lifted. There are separate sections for young and grown up readers on their website, and more than 13K followers on Insta (@IndiaReadWithUs).

The club takes it slow – one book a month, and they set up read-alongs, virtual discussions and author Q&As. It’s not unusual to see GenZ and grandparents all bonding (or calmly disagreeing) over the same book. “A 19-year-old and a 60-year-old discussing Pachinko or Ikigai in the same meeting? That’s the magic,” Jain says. “It still blows our minds, sometimes.”

In the mountains

Manik Jaiswal and Narendra Singh started The Bookoholics on Facebook in 2011. They were barely 19 and 20 years old at the time. Now, almost a decade-and-a-half in, it might just be India’s busiest reading community. Their Insta alone (@TheBookoholics) has close to one million followers.

Jaiswal recalls how they started out, with “quotes from Khaled Hosseini, Haruki Murakami, messy book summaries, candid reviews, unfiltered bookish rants”. It was more heartfelt than curated. “Slowly, people started engaging with us.”

They do more than reviews, meetups and donation drives. The Bookoholics runs a Book Exchange, in which swappers include personal notes for recipients, often sparking friendships and new connections between strangers. From 100 books in Season 1 to more than 2,000 in Season 4, the exchange remains free.

Since 2017, they’ve also hosted four-day reading trips in the mountains for members. This is where participants get through a tome in a silent-reading session, join a book circle and discuss novels under the stars. Sign up early – they sell out fast.

In the park

Group reading clubs have been a hit almost everywhere they’ve been initiated in India. Mohammed Nusrath and Biswarupa Barik set up Hyderabad Reads as a way to get citizens to use public spaces as peaceful reading zones. “We began in Jubilee Hills and Banjara Hills because these hubs attract people from different states,” says Nusrath.

They’ve spread to other locations in the city, and each spot brings a mix of homegrown readers and those who’ve moved to Hyderabad to work but were seeking bookish company. “We don’t do anything extraordinary to push people to read; we simply show up,” Nusrath says. “When someone sees a group coming together every weekend to read, it acts as a reminder of that ‘one thing’ they’ve been meaning to do but keep postponing. People see it and think, ‘Why not join them?’” There’s probably one in your city already.

The book café

Where many cafes now have a shelf of books, Fictionary in Mumbai has walls and walls of them. The part-library, part-coffee-shop, part-cosy-hangout, part-bookfest-venue is dedicated to fiction. Founder Anup Nair chose it because he discovered its restorative power after years of picking up only non-fiction titles as a corporate worker. “Fiction became an escape from the routine, the stresses of life, and from the constant need to self-improve while reading,” he says.

Fictionary is a year old and has a mix of buzzing and quiet nooks. It hosts reading mixers and book-club events. There’s a WhatsApp group, where members exchange recommendations. And their Insta (@FictionaryBooks) keeps their 76K followers updated about what’s happening at the store and which collabs are in the works. “Being surrounded by other readers has motivated a lot of people to go back to reading,” Nair says.
