Pope Leo XIV Gives His Blessing to the Theatrical Experience

Pope Leo XIV isn’t just a White Sox fan, turns out he’s also a cinephile.

Speaking at the Vatican on Saturday, November 15, His Holiness, who is the first American-born Pope, gathered together Representatives of the World of Cinema to give a brief address that championed the theatrical, movie going experience, saying that cinema is “a popular art in the noblest sense” and that cinemas and theaters themselves are the “beating hearts of our communities.”

“It is wonderful to see that when the magic light of cinema illuminates the darkness, it simultaneously ignites the eyes of the soul,” Pope Leo XIV said in Italian (as translated in English per a document distributed at the event). “Indeed, cinema combines what appears to be mere entertainment with the narrative of the human person’s spiritual adventure. One of cinema’s most valuable contributions is helping audiences consider their own live, look at the complexity of their experiences with new eyes and examine the world as if for the first time. In doing so, they rediscover a portion of the hope that is essential for humanity to live to the fullest. I find comfort in the thought that cinema is not just moving pictures; it sets hope in motion!”

Though the event was live streamed, press wasn’t present, though IndieWire spoke with a source who said that a litany of A-list filmmakers and actors saw His Holiness speak. Those included, according to our source, Cate Blanchett, Chris Pine, Greta Gerwig, Judd Apatow and Leslie Mann, Julie Taymor, Monica Bellucci, David Lowery, Viggo Mortensen, Nicholas Winding Refn, Joanna Hogg, Gasper Noe, Adam Scott, Bertrand Bonello, Darren Aronofsky, Spike Lee, Dave Franco and Alison Brie, Kenneth Lonergan, and festival heads from TIFF, Locarno, Sundance, and Rotterdam.

The Pope’s remarks came after he recently revealed his four favorite films, those being “It’s a Wonderful Life,” “The Sound of Music,” “Life Is Beautiful,” and perhaps an unexpected selection, the late Robert Redford’s “Ordinary People.”

But the speech came ahead of what is the coming 130th anniversary of the invention of cinema, with the Pope namedropping the Lumiére Brothers’ first public screening back in December 1895. Many of the attending filmmakers also dropped by the Cinema Troisi in Rome, hosting screenings of some of their own films or other classics that have been packed through the weekend. The cinema, curated by Valerio Carocci, is a single-screen theater that plays films 24-hours a day.

While we don’t know if the Pope is making his way down to the Cinema Troisi anytime soon, we know he blesses those who do.

“May your cinema always be a meeting place and a home for those seeking meaning and a language of peace,” he said. “May it never lose its capacity to amaze and even continue to offer us a glimpse, however small, of the mystery of God.”

Bollywood actor Ayushmann Khurrana is currently riding high on the success of his recent release, Thamma. As the film crossed ₹50 crore in just three days, the actor shared an emotional note revealing how the film came as a “beautiful divine light” for him and his family.

On Friday, Ayushmann took to Instagram and shared a compilation that included a video from his Diwali celebration with family, a picture with his late father, one with his on-screen father Paresh Rawal, and a clip of fans mobbing him as he visited a theatre screening of Thamma to see the audience’s reaction. Alongside the pictures and videos, he penned a heartfelt note expressing how Thamma’s success came as a huge relief.

He wrote, “This family has seen a lot in the last few years. The success of Thamma is like a beautiful divine light. It is a result of the collective prayers of the young and the old present here. आयुष्मान भव:… that’s what my father used to say whenever I touched his feet. When Paresh ji said आयुष्मान भव: in the film, it felt like my father, my guardian angel, had blessed me.”

Ayushmann expressed his gratitude for the film’s success and added, “My family, my late father and the audience have blessed Thamma with love. Don’t be surprised if you come across an overwhelmed me in one of the theatres in the suburbs —I may drop in to say hi and thank you!”

His industry friends also showered love and congratulated him on the film’s success. Rajkummar Rao commented, “Congratulations, brother. Very well deserved.” Vijay Varma wrote, “Lots of love to you and fam, brother.” Rakul Preet Singh added, “May this be just the beginning of so much more… love to all of you.”

Fans also joined in to celebrate the moment. One of them wrote, “Like they say, some successes feel personal to us. This one feels exactly like that. Your wins = our wins. So, so happy and proud of you, AK! You deserve every bit of this and even more. Ayushmann Bhava!” Another commented, “You deserve every bit of it.”

Ayushmann lost his father, astrologer P. Khurana, in May 2023 after a prolonged illness. Earlier this year, in April, his wife and filmmaker Tahira Kashyap revealed that her breast cancer had relapsed after seven years. She underwent treatment and is currently focusing on regaining her health.

Before Thamma, Ayushmann was last seen in Dream Girl 2 (2023) alongside Ananya Panday. The film was a commercial success, earning ₹142.2 crore worldwide at the box office. In Thamma, produced by Maddock Films, Ayushmann plays the role of a vampire. The film also stars Rashmika Mandanna, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Paresh Rawal and Faisal Malik in key roles. It has received mostly positive reviews and continues to enjoy a dream run at the box office.

Ayushmann will next be seen in Mudassar Aziz’s Pati Patni Aur Woh Do, which also stars Sara Ali Khan in the lead role. The film is scheduled for release in March 2026.

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end, 35, proposed to singer Taylor, also 35, in the garden of his house earlier this month and his father Ed Kelce, 73, has now revealed the athlete approached Taylor’s father, Scott Swift, 72, about a month ago to formally request permission to marry his daughter.

Ed said on Australian radio’s The Jimmy and Nath Show with Emma about the couple’s engagement, revealed by the pair on Instagram on 26 August: “I was talking to Scott Swift and Travis went to ask him for permission, and this was probably a month ago, and Scott said, ‘Well come on, when are you going to get this done?’”

Like Scott, Ed admitted he had been urging his son to move ahead with the proposal.

He added: “(Travis) didn’t come to me for advice so much as I went to him to tell him, you know, ‘To get this done’.

“Travis had these plans to do it the next weekend before flying out to Brazil (for a Kansas City Chiefs game against the Los Angeles Chargers on 5 September.)

“He was going to make a big production out of it some place, wanted to make it a bit special. I told him the same thing Scott told him, ‘Asking her is what’s going to make it special. It’s not where you do it. You know what I mean? You could do it on the side of the road’.

“Scott adds, ‘Just get it done. Don’t worry about any special date. Just, you’re ready, you got the ring, go do it’.”

In the end, Travis followed that advice.

Ed said: “They were going out to dinner and she was ready to go and he said, ‘Let’s go out in the garden on the patio and have a glass of wine before we go’.

“I think she knew something was up because as they walked out there, she could see, suddenly, there were a lot more flowers out there.”

Ed went on: “I’ve never seen him quite so happy. I think it’s wonderful. These are two young people madly in love with each other and I think this is great.”

The dad also revealed that Travis had shown him a picture of the engagement ring designed by Kindred Lubeck of Artifex Fine Jewelry in early July.

He told News 5’s John Kosich: “The family on both sides kind of assumed that this was going to happen because we’ve never seen our kids so happy.”

On social media, Taylor confirmed the engagement with a joint post with Travis.

She said: “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married,” alongside photos from the garden proposal.

The post was set to her 2024 track So High School, widely believed to be about her relationship with Travis.
