Announcing Beats + Bytes  – SPIN

by jummy84 November 3, 2025
written by jummy84

My focus is the intersection of entertainment, brand partnerships, and technology. I’ve been running an indie boutique called Nue Agency for nearly two decades. It started as a talent agency finding and developing artists with the belief that we had to think differently to help our artists break. I had tremendous success representing talent such as Pusha T, Wale, MIMS, Big Sean, Mike Posner, J. Cole, Logic, Action Bronson, White Panda (which spawned Gryffin), 2AM Club (which launched Marc E. Bassey), and many more.

When the internet was decimating the music business of the past—and CDs that cost pennies to make were no longer selling by the millions for $20 a pop—I could see the writing on the wall. I believed that tech was going to be the savior of the music industry. At that point, we began whole-heartedly encouraging our artists to embrace technology companies and be open to partnerships with these new platforms.

Almost a decade into representing artists, I changed my business model then, too, and began using a similar creative mindset to help break brands and launch campaigns that leveraged the power of music and its creators.

As an indie you have to be crafty and stay on your toes. That’s part of the reason I was so attracted to SPIN. SPIN is an iconic music magazine that encapsulates the spirit of indie culture. The impresarios and indies are the lifeblood of the music business, and independent artists are on the rise again, eating more and more of the majors’ market share. SPIN embodies what is cool about music.

When I met the CEO Jimmy Hutcheson a few years ago, I knew I wanted to work with him. He was a big thinker that loved music to the core. Like me, he was a talent booker in college and deeply understood digital media. He had a vision for how to bring SPIN back to its turn-of-the-century glory and beyond.

Since purchasing the company at the beginning of these roaring 2020s, he’s put together a rockstar team, even bringing back the original founder of SPIN, Bob Guccione Jr., to tap into the nostalgia of the print form of the magazine. I’m honored and excited to be collaborating with him and the team on my new column, Beats + Bytes. This is issue No. 1!

So, what can you expect from me? I’m moving at the speed of culture. I see through an artist’s lens, but I understand what it takes to service the biggest brands in the world. I love to make predictions, forecast trends, have off the record, real world conversation, chase art and connect dots. I’m a techno-optimist.

In many ways, we are in a golden era of music. Despite concerns about ‘devaluation’ of music, its new-found ubiquity has proven incredibly powerful. There are more artists creating (and owning their material), and more fans consuming and connecting with music than at any point in history. The red tape has finally been cut and new tools have helped grow the long tail as catalog material is given new life and amateurs join the fun.

The live business is healthy, with festival culture staying strong (Coachella already sold out next year) and plenty of room for boutique and niche events. Venture capital and tech investments are flowing, helping musicians build better fan experiences, while brand dollars and the creator economy provide a mechanism for financial support to reach artists big and small. Music is the #1 passion point and the top identity driver with teens, more than fashion and more than sports. All that, and the space remains ripe for innovation.

Is it perfect? Absolutely not. Is it getting harder to cut through the noise, or for a new song to stay top of mind? Absolutely yes. There was no “song of the summer” and some say this marks the end of the mainstream popularity era. I’m not sure about that, although my attention is being gobbled up by something different every week, since so much inspiring music is being released.

Looking up, there is a lot of blue sky for our industry. My personal mission is to find innovative ways to bring more brand dollars to artists, storytellers, and the music business as a whole. I couldn’t be more psyched to be here, working with SPIN to get this message out to a bigger audience of music fans.

Peace,
Jesse K.

Thamma worldwide box office collection day 4: Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna’s film is inching close to the ₹100 crore mark.

Thamma worldwide box office collection day 4: Even as Thamma is facing some slowdown at the box office over the weekdays, the Maddock Films horror comedy continues to gallop towards the ₹100-crore mark worldwide. After an impressive start at the domestic box office, the film picked up pace overseas too on Thursday and Friday, solidifying its chances of a good lifetime haul.

Thamma worldwide box office update

Thamma, a vampire story, earned ₹65.15 crore net ( ₹78.20 crore gross) in India over the first four days of its release. This included a more-than-impressive ₹24 crore start on Diwali, followed by a continuous decline over the next three weekdays. To its credit, the film managed to avoid too large a drop in collections on any of those days, limiting the dips to 25% or under. But even then, its daily collection was down to ₹9.55 crore net by Friday.

However, overseas, the film reversed the trend. In the first two days of release, Thamma barely managed to scratch the surface of overseas collections as it did not get the benefit of a festive release outside India (Diwali is not a holiday in most major international markets). But as the weekend arrived, Thamma picked up pace. It has now earned almost $1.6 million in the overseas territories in four days, and is promising to go past the $3 million mark in the first week itself.

This takes Thamma’s worldwide collection after four days to an impressive ₹93 crore. On Friday, it surpassed the lifetime collection of Maddock’s recent romantic comedy Bhool Chuk Maaf, which ended its run at ₹89 crore worldwide. The film is now set to cross the ₹100 crore mark on Saturday.

All about Thamma

Directed by Aditya Sarpotdar, Thamma is the story of a journalist (Ayushmann Khurrana) who gets caught up in the power struggle of vampires (Rashmika Mandanna and Nawazuddin Siddiqui). The film is part of the larger Maddock Horror Comedy Universe, and is hence connected to the Stree films, Bhediya, and Munjya. It has been praised for its humour, visual effects, and starry cameos.

Girls Make Beats — a non-profit empowering the next generation of female producers, DJs and engineers — hosted a summit for local middle- and high-school girls at Paramount Pictures in Los Angeles on Friday (Oct. 10) in honor of International Day of the Girl.

Approximately 500 students from L.A., Compton and Inglewood spoke with executives and creatives such as Rochelle Balogun, senior hip-hop & Afro programmer at Amazon Music; Qiana Conley Akinro, senior executive director of the Recording Academy LA Chapter; producer/songwriter Trinity; and songwriter Whitney Phillips during speed mentor sessions. The girls also practiced DJing through virtual reality with Tribe XR and with Serato through TEC Leimert, a Black-owned non-profit dedicated to helping communities of color to keep pace with technological innovations in an effort to bridge a growing digital divide. Other activations at the Girls Make Beats Summit included jamming with pink and purple Girls Make Beats branded guitars in the Plug and Play area, learning about the audio pitch modification tool Melodyne with the musical software company Celemony, and checking out Mobile Sessions, a mobile recording/mix/live production studio built inside of an RV.

The girls later filed into the Paramount Theatre, where they were treated to a performance of “Big Screen” by Girls Make Beats event producer Stichiz and Janice & The JAC Trio, and greeted by host Kaiya Nyasha. Randy Spendlove, president of worldwide music and publishing at Paramount Pictures, Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. and Phylicia Fant, global head of music industry and culture collaborations, delivered more remarks. Later, the girls tuned into the “What Is Sync Licensing?” workshop with Racquelle Proctor, senior manager of creative music strategy at Paramount, and the “How to Make a Beat” masterclass with Girls Make Beats founder Tiffany Miranda. And three students won the $1,700 You Glow Girl scholarship.

Girls Make Beats was also honored by Janelle Monáe at Songwriters of North America’s fifth annual Warrior Awards on Sunday evening (Oct. 12).

Kantara Chapter 1 worldwide box office collection day 6: The Rishab Shetty film is now the second-highest-grossing Kannada film of all time.

Kantara Chapter 1 worldwide box office collection: Rishab Shetty’s Kantara Chapter 1 continues to steamroll past milestones and landmarks each day it spends in the theatres. The Kannada period action film has now crossed ₹400 crore worldwide, eclipsing the lifetime collection of the first Kantara film in the process.

Kantara Chapter 1 worldwide box office collection day 6: Rishab Shetty and Rukmini Vasanth star in this blockbuster.

Kantara Chapter 1 box office update

Kantara Chapter 1 had a very strong opening weekend, particularly in India. It has since carried that momentum on to the weekdays, showing just a small drop on Monday, and then managing to climb back on Tuesday. So far, the film has earned ₹290.25 crore net ( ₹348 crore gross) in India in its six-day run at the box office.

Overseas, Kantara Chapter 1 has not set the cash registers ringing quite at the same level as the Indian market, but it has done well. In its first six days, the film has collected over $7 million in international territories. This takes its worldwide collection to ₹414 crore with a couple of days still remaining in its first week at the ticket window.

Kantara Chapter 1 becomes second-highest-grossing Kannada film

On Sunday, Kantara Chapter 1 had gone past the lifetime collection of KGF Chapter 1. On Tuesday, it surpassed the first Kantara as well. The 2022 sleeper hit had earned ₹408 crore worldwide, which Kantara Chapter 1 has now surpassed. It is now the second-highest-grossing Kannada film of all time, behind only KGF Chapter 1 ( ₹1250 crore). On Tuesday, Kantara Chapter 1 also beat the lifetime haul of other recent hits like Kamal Haasan’s Vikram ( ₹413 crore) and the Bollywood horror comedy Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 ( ₹411 crore). It now has a chance to be the first Indian film to breach ₹1000 crore this year.

All about Kantara Chapter 1

Written and directed by Rishab Shetty, Kantara Chapter 1 is a prequel to the 2022 sleeper hit Kantara. Set a thousand years before the events of the first film, it shows the tussle between the residents of Kantara and a neighbouring kingdom that wants to annex their lands and resources. Apart from Rishab in the lead, the period action drama also stars Rukmini Vasanth, Jayaram, and Gulshan Devaiah in the lead roles. Kantara Chapter 1 has received glowing reviews from critics and fans alike.

Kantara Chapter 1 box office collection day 1 (updated live): The Rishab Shetty film opened to positive reviews, with many praising the lead performance.

Kantara Chapter 1 box office collection day 1 (updated live): Rishab Shetty’s prequel to 2022’s Kantara is one of the most anticipated releases of the year. The Dusshera release is not just one of the most high-profile Kannada films of all time, but also among the biggest festive releases pan-India this year. According to the latest update, Kantara Chapter 1 has already surpassed the ₹40 crore mark.

Kantara Chapter 1 box office collection (updated live): Rishab Shetty film is looking at a bumper opening.

Kantara Chapter 1 box office update at 7 PM

The Sacnilk report states that Kantara Chapter 1 collected ₹47.76 crore on its opening day of release. The film is expected to cross the ₹50 crore mark by the end of the day. It has already crossed the opening day collections of several hit films of the year, including Saiyaara ( ₹22 crore), Sikandar ( ₹26 crore), and Chhaava ( ₹31 crore). Can it beat Pawan Kalyan’s OG ( ₹84 crore) and Rajinikanth’s Coolie ( ₹65 crore)? It seems unlikely.

Jr NTR tweeted about the film and wrote, “Congratulations to the team of #KantaraChapter1 on scoring a resounding success. @shetty_rishab sir pulled off the unthinkable by excelling both as a mindblowing actor and a brilliant director. My best wishes to the entire cast and crew, along with @hombalefilms, for fearlessly backing Rishab sir’s vision.”

HT review of Kantara

An excerpt from the Hindustan Times review of the film read, “Rishab Shetty balances the folk traditions that have inspired the film with modern sensibilities better this time around. Chapter 1 gives its women more agency than the first film ever did. But even this one can’t resist the knight-in-shining-armour trope. However strong the woman is, a man must rescue her in the end. Rishab Shetty’s writing seems to allow women to have power and independence only when they rebel or antagonise. Otherwise, it is reduced to tokenism. However, still props to the writer-director for giving a female character more prominence this time around, and even giving her some of the most powerful moments in the film.”

Saiyaara is the no 1 non English film on Netflix globally, beats Fall For Me; Ahaan, Aneet thank fans for all the love

Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda-starrer Saiyaara has become the most-watched non-English film on Netflix globally within five days of its streaming release.

In its debut week on streaming, Mohit Suri’s Saiyaara has scripted history by becoming the most-watched non-English film on the platform globally. The romantic drama has beaten German erotic thriller Fall For Me and Netflix’s Hindi original, Inspector Zende, in the race.

Saiyaara tops Netflix’s global charts

As per Tudum, Netflix’s databank of best-performing titles, Saiyaara is trending at number 1 in the list of non-English films worldwide, with 3.7 million views and 9.3 million hours viewed. Fall For Me is in the second spot with 6.5 million hours viewed, while Inspector Zende, starring Manoj Bajpayee, rounds up the top 3 with 6.2 million hours viewed. The only other Indian film in the top 10 is Vijay Deverakonda’s Kingdom, which sits in the 9th spot with 2.5 million hours viewed.

Saiyaara is currently the number 1 non-English film on Netflix globally.
Saiyaara is currently the number 1 non-English film on Netflix globally.

On Wednesday afternoon, Netflix India shared a video message from the film’s leads – Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda – reacting to the film’s performance on streaming. “For giving Saiyaara all the love in the world, we love you forever and ever and ever. Saiyaara is trending globally on Netflix, only because of you. Thank you for watching and rewatching, and rewatching,” the actors said in the message.

Saiyaara’s successful run

Saiyaara released on Netflix last Friday, and has climbed to the global number 1 position in just five days. Given its box office performance and craze among the passes, the film was expected to do well upon its streaming release, but it would be safe to say, the film has surpassed expectations. None of the recent big-budget Indian films have managed to enter the global top 3 of Netflix, let alone top it.

Saiyaara is a love story of a temperamental singer (played by Ahaan) and a songwriter (Aneet). Their love is tested by her early-onset Alzheimer’s. The film, a musical drama, saw director Mohit Suri return to the romantic genre after over a decade, and to great returns. Saiyaara has grossed ₹577 crore worldwide, becoming not just the second-highest-grossing Indian film of 2025, but also the highest-grossing romantic film in the history of Indian cinema. It has also catapulted its two leads to overnight stardom, particularly among the younger audiences.

This takes the film’s domestic earnings after 10 days to ₹245 crore net ( ₹291 crore gross). The film has also broken several overseas earnings records for Tamil cinema, courtesy of a bumper start. Its overseas collection now stands at an estimated $21 million ( ₹177 crore). This takes the film’s worldwide gross after 10 days to ₹468 crore.

On Saturday, as Coolie saw an upswing in collections worldwide, the film surpassed the lifetime collections of two recent hits – Salman Khan’s Tiger 3 ( ₹464 crore) and Shah Rukh Khan’s Dunki ( ₹454 crore). Both films were box office hits, but were also considered to have underperformed based on their star power. Coolie has crossed both in 10 days, and now looks set to reach the ₹500-crore mark sometime early next week.

Only three Tamil films have crossed the ₹500-crore mark in worldwide earnings: Rajinikanth’s 2.0 and Jailer, and Vijay’s Leo. Coolie would be the fourth to reach that milestone, in all likelihood on Tuesday.

All about Coolie

Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, Coolie is an action thriller that opened to mixed reviews but was appreciated by fans of Rajinikanth. In addition to the superstar, the film also stars Nagarjuna, Shruti Haasan, Soubin Shahir, Upendra, and Aamir Khan (in a cameo).
