Canadian-Korean Indie Comedy Film ‘The Mother and the Bear’ Trailer

“Do you think that we’re good parents?” Dekanalog has revealed the official US trailer for an acclaimed indie film from Canada titled The Mother and the Bear, made by talented Canadian-Chinese filmmaker Johnny Ma. The film premiered at the 2024 Toronto Film Festival last year and it also played at a few other festivals and is finally opening in limited release (in the US) soon. In the snow-swept city of Winnipeg, school teacher Sumi is hospitalized after a fall. On hearing the news, her anxious mother, Sara, flies over from Seoul to be with her comatose daughter — once Sara sets herself up in the young woman’s apartment, she discovers she doesn’t really know Sumi at all. As Sara meddles in Sumi’s life via a dating app, she ends up on a journey that will leave her forever changed. “A stylized, whimsical narrative of crossed wires, secret lives, and conflicting agendas, the film is ‘a uniquely charming comedy about one woman’s quest to discover more about herself.” Starring Kim Ho-jung, Lee Won-jae, Jonathan Kim, Amara Pedroso, Kalyn Bomback, Susan Hanson, Samantha Kendrick, and Leere Park as Sumi. Looks amusing & heartfelt.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Johnny Ma’s film The Mother and the Bear, from YouTube:

The Mother and the Bear Poster

After 26-year-old Sumi (Leere Park) suffers an accident on the streets of wintry Winnipeg, Canada, her overbearing mother Sara (Kim Ho-jung) flies in from Seoul to be by her now comatose daughter’s side. Desperate to ensure Sumi will have someone to look after her in the future, Sara embarks on a mission to catfish a suitable (preferably Korean) husband before her daughter wakes up. However, as Sara meddles in Sumi’s life via a dating app, she ends up on a journey that will leave her forever changed. The Mother and the Bear is directed by Canadian-Chinese filmmaker Johnny Ma, director of the films Old Stone and To Live to Sing previously. Produced by Niv Fichman and Juan de Dios Larraín. This initially premiered at the 2024 Toronto Film Festival last year. Dekanalog will debut Johnny Ma’s The Mother and the Bear film in select US theaters starting January 2nd, 2026 early next year. Genie Francis Shifts Into Protective Mama Bear Mode as Laura Puts Drew in His Place

by jummy84 November 2, 2025
written by jummy84

What To Know

  • Genie Francis returned to General Hospital as Laura Webber Collins, delivering a standout performance by fiercely defending her grandson and confronting Congressman Drew Cain for his manipulative behavior.
  • Laura not only protected Danny and Rocco from Drew’s verbal attacks but also called out Drew’s inability to separate personal feelings from politics, showcasing her authoritative presence.
  • Francis displayed both strength and warmth, bonding with newcomer Ronnie Bard and earning Performer of the Week honors for her passionate and personable portrayal.

Genie Francis has been absent from our screens far too often as of late on General Hospital. Fortunately, that was rectified this week when the Daytime Emmy winner’s character, Laura Webber Collins, blasted morally-challenged Congressman Drew Cain (Cameron Mathison) for his machinations.

We also saw a fun, softer side to Laura as she bonded with Port Charles’s latest newcomer, Ronnie Bard (Erika Slezak). For her performance that was both passionate and personable, TV Insider bestows Performer of the Week honors on Francis.

Congressman Cain is enjoying throwing his weight around wherever he can these days. Danny (Asher Antonyzyn) and Rocco (Finn Carr) were his latest targets after Drew discovered that Danny had violated the order keeping him from his sister, Scout (Cosette Abinante).

Francis’s Laura arrived just in time to not only put a halt to Drew’s verbal attack on the boys, but also to administer one of her own. “I beg your pardon,” Laura authoritatively informed Drew. “I believe you’re out of your depth, Congressman!”

Mathison has come to embrace his manipulative character and has gotten quite used to ordering people around. Laura, however, has delt with villains in Port Charles for decades, from conniving Bobbie Spencer (the late Jacklyn Zeman), in her conniving nursing school days, to controlling matriarch Helena Cassadine (Constance Towers). The mayor of Port Charles doesn’t let anyone push her around. She’s not about to let anyone intimidate her grandson, Rocco, either.

ABC

“When did you become so petty and vindictive?” Laura almost rhetorically asked Drew. She wasn’t interested in hearing anything he had to say in terms of defending his character, or lack thereof.

After politely asking Danny and Rocco to leave, Laura’s strength only seemed to grow. “I would appreciate it if you would stop characterizing Danny as a ‘bad influence,’” Laura scolded Drew.

Soaps are famous for their two-person scenes, but Francis was sharing the screen with daytime legend Slezak in this confrontation with Drew. We couldn’t help but notice Laura’s bemused reactions as Ronnie caught on to Drew’s true nature.

When Drew failed to win Ronnie over to his side, he fell back on gunning for Scout’s brother. “Oh, please!” Laura remarked as she called out the Congressman for not being able to separate his personal feelings from politics.

Francis’s Laura has a beautiful smile, and she lit up like a Christmas tree when she heard Ronnie say she didn’t much like Drew.

After Drew was shown the door to the house that it looks like he won’t be buying, Laura turned to Ronnie and said, “As the mayor of this town, may I be the first to officially welcome you to Port Charles.”

In an effort to bond with Ronnie, Laura recounted a tea party she once helped the late Lila (Anna Lee) throw at the Quartermaine house when she was employed by her husband, Edward (David Lewis). There was a nice shoutout from Laura to her mother (Lesley, Denise Alexander) when she recounted that Alan (Stuart Damon) and Monica got into a fight that day, which climaxed when Monica threw a teacup at her husband.

We can’t say we recall that particular bit from the show’s Golden Age, but all that matters is that Francis sold the incident as if it had actually occurred. That’s how good she is.

In an effort to shed a light on the sister Ronnie never fully knew, Laura explained that the Quartermaines argued for sport (they sure did) and that Monica was Edward’s favorite (also true).

If Ronnie ends up coming clean that she’s a big fraud and not really Monica’s sister, it may be because folks like Laura have welcomed her with such grace. Kudos to Francis for her terrific performance as Laura passionately defended her grandson and also showed she can befriend a total newcomer with genuine warmth.

Ajith Kumar breaks silence on Karur tragedy: “One person cannot bear the blame alone”

by jummy84 November 2, 2025
written by jummy84

The devastating incident in Karur this September, which left several lives lost and many injured during a political event attended by Vijay, continues to echo through Tamil Nadu. In his recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, actor and racing enthusiast Ajith Kumar shared a thoughtful take on the tragedy, urging society to see it not as the fault of one man but as a collective failure.

“That individual alone is not responsible. We are all responsible for it, and even the media has a part to play,” Ajith said, referring to the way public gatherings and celebrity events often spiral out of control. He pointed out that society has become “obsessed with gathering,” and this obsession must stop before it costs more lives.

Ajith’s comments mark a rare moment of self-awareness from one of Tamil cinema’s most private stars. He spoke calmly but firmly about how the culture of mass adoration can quickly turn dangerous when boundaries are blurred between admiration and frenzy. “There should be a way to express love and excitement, but it has to be within limits,” he added.

The actor also highlighted the importance of understanding the risks that come with fame. “As an actor, like many others, I work hard, stay away from family for long periods, and often get injured on set. We do it out of love for our fans,” he said, adding that this very bond must be expressed responsibly.

Hero Worship and the Reflection on Cinema

Ajith’s words come at a time when the line between film and politics in Tamil Nadu has become increasingly thin. Overcrowding at public events, competitive displays of loyalty, and the urge to show fan strength have become common. The Karur tragedy, according to Ajith, should be a moment of reflection for everyone involved.

“Why is it happening only in theatres or at events linked to cinema personalities?” he asked. “When things go wrong, it projects the entire film industry in a bad light.” His message, while measured, carries an unmistakable urgency. It calls for a change in how fandom is expressed and how media amplifies that spectacle.

Reports from the investigation into the Karur incident indicate that mismanagement, overcrowding, and inadequate control were major factors that led to the tragedy. Ajith’s response, therefore, is not just a reaction to public sentiment but a wider commentary on accountability. His stance underlines the need for awareness, restraint, and respect for safety, both from fans and those who lead them.

Ajith Kumar breaks silence on Karur tragedy: “One person cannot bear the blame alone”

Looking Ahead: A New Chapter with Adhik Ravichandran

While addressing the tragedy, Ajith also spoke about his professional journey. He confirmed that he will be joining hands again with filmmaker Adhik Ravichandran after their recent collaboration Good Bad Ugly. The official announcement of the new project will be made in January 2026.

Director Adhik had earlier mentioned that while Good Bad Ugly catered primarily to Ajith’s fans, their next project would reach a broader audience. This upcoming venture is expected to mark a new phase in Ajith’s career, bringing together his mass appeal and his growing desire to explore deeper, more universal stories.

Ajith’s openness in this interview reflects a side of him that fans rarely see. By addressing the Karur tragedy head-on, he has reminded the industry, the media, and the audience that empathy and self-reflection are as vital as success and celebration. His words serve as both a reality check and a call for change within a culture that often confuses admiration with worship.

Mia Goth, Zach Galifianakis and Dan Stevens to Star in ‘Hey Bear’

by jummy84 October 29, 2025
written by jummy84

“Portlandia” co-creator Jonathan Krisel is making his feature debut with “Hey Bear,” a bold revenge comedy that will star Mia Goth (“Frankenstein”), Zach Galifianakis (“The Hangover trilogy”) and Dan Stevens (“I’m Your Man”).

Penned by Carrie Kemper, the Emmy-winning writer of “Beef,” “Hey Bear” is being pitched as a “coming of rage” story boasting offbeat comedy, about a woman who seeks revenge on the bear that ate her husband. Alix Madigan (“Winter’s Bone”) will produce.

“Hey Bear” will be introduced to buyers at AFM, with HanWay Films handling international sales and WME Independent & UTA Independent Film Group representing North America.

Goth stars as Claire, who “has always led a life solely based on other people’s expectations. Married to Gregory (Dan Stevens), she accommodates his desire to spend his life studying bears in Glacier National Park, even though it means months away from him at a time. During one of her visits, a grizzly bear, nicknamed Mr. Cranky by Gregory, mauls him to death. After being told by the park rangers that Mr. Cranky was euthanised, Claire finds out that the bear has merely been transported to another national park and is living his best life. The usually meek Claire makes up her mind to exact revenge on the bear. She teams up with socially awkward park ranger Putt (Galifianakis) to assassinate Mr. Cranky, but Putt has his own murky motivations for joining her. With death and truth lurking around every tree, Claire’s desperate, grief-fueled mission takes her on an ultimately uplifting journey of empowerment and self-discovery. Set in breath-taking natural scenery, this “coming of rage” story is a darkly comedic rollercoaster ride full of originality and surprise,” the synopsis reads.

“There is nothing more thrilling than coming across a project that breaks barriers in terms of originality. As absurd and crazy as the premise of this story is, you always fully connect and empathise with Claire’s journey as she figures out how out of grief, to take ownership of her life again,” said Gabrielle Stewart, CEO of HanWay Films. “Mia Goth, Dan Stevens and Zach Galifianakis are the dream team to make us laugh, feel, and gasp with shock and horror,” Stewart continued.

Executive producers are Carrie Kemper and Danica Radovanov. Krisel is represented by UTA and Mosaic. Kemper is represented by UTA. Goth is represented by WME, Curtis Brown and Jackoway, Austen. Galifianakis is represented by Brillstein Entertainment Partners and UTA. Stevens is represented by CAA and Julian Belfrage Associates

Emmerdale confirms three special episodes – including Bear mystery solved

written by jummy84

Emmerdale has confirmed three special standalone episodes coming up this autumn.

The instalments will focus on April (Amelia Flanagan) and Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock), Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley) and Bear Wolf (Joshua Richards).

Viewers of the ITV soap will know that April Dingle has found herself in danger in recent weeks as she and Dylan Penders have been exploited by the villainous Ray Walters as part of his criminal operation.

In the special episode focusing on the troubled teen, Marlon tries to get through to her as she remains at the mercy of the drug dealers, with ITV teasing that the instalment will explore the fragile and possibly broken relationship between the father and daughter.

The Robert Sugden-focused episode, meanwhile, will take viewers behind the bars of his recent incarceration.

Emmerdale viewers will remember that the character returned to the village in May after serving six years in prison following the death of Lee Posner, but what exactly happened during those six years?

Elsewhere, the Bear-focused episode will see Paddy (Dominic Brunt) discover that his estranged father, who he believed had been living with friends in Ireland since July, never actually made the journey across the Irish sea.

ITV has teased that the episode will “explore the hundred missing days of Bear’s life and we’ll learn that he is sadly trapped in an all too common situation for a forgotten generation”.

Further details on when the special episodes will air will be announced in due course.

Watch Grizzly Bear reunite for first live show in six years

by jummy84 October 14, 2025
written by jummy84

Grizzly Bear reunited for their first live show in six years last night (October 13) – check out footage from the gig below.

The Brooklyn indie four-piece went on hiatus in 2019, two years after the release of their most recent album, ‘Painted Ruins’.

In November 2023, a couple of months after sharing that he opened up his own therapy practice, founder and co-lead vocalist Ed Droste suggested that the band could end their hiatus at some stage, and in May this year, the band announced their return with news of a US tour in the autumn.

Last night, the band kicked off the tour with their first of five homecoming shows at Brooklyn Steel, and the setlist took fans all the way through their career. Their 2013 single ‘Will Calls’ got its live debut, while ‘Alligator’, from their 2004 debut album ‘Horn Of Plenty’, was played for the first time since 2008.

Another live rarity, 2006’s ‘Little Brother’, was played for the first time since 2014. And the show also saw their first documented performance of ‘Deep Sea Diver’ (via Setlist.fm) – likely the first time it’s been played since 2005.

They played many of their most popular tracks, too, including ‘Two Weeks’, ‘Yet Again’, and ‘Mourning Sound’.

Grizzly Bear’s Brooklyn setlist was:

‘Southern Point’
‘Alligator’
‘Sleeping Ute’
‘Mourning Sound’
‘Yet Again’
‘Cut-Out’
‘Little Brother’
‘Ready, Able’
‘Fine For Now’
‘Foreground Play’
‘While You Wait For The Others’
‘Will Calls’
‘Two Weeks’
‘On A Neck, On A Spit’
‘Three Rings’
‘Sun In Your Eyes’
Encore:
‘Deep Sea Diver’
‘Sky Took Hold’

Speaking to Pitchfork last week, they said that they’ll be switching their setlists up every night, Co-lead vocalist Daniel Rossen saying: “We’re trying to balance the songs that we assume are the popular ones or algorithmically favourite songs, coupled with more obscure songs that we maybe wouldn’t have touched at the time.”

Tonight (October 14), Grizzly Bear are set to return to Brooklyn Steel, before another three shows there on October 16, 17 and 18. They’re then playing two shows in Chicago before heading to Los Angeles, San Francisco and Oakland. You can find remaining tickets here.

From October 16, they’ll be joined by Beach House vocalist Victoria Legrand for a handful of songs each night. “Truly honored to have such a queen with us,” they said when announcing the news last week.

While on hiatus, Droste confirmed in 2020 that he’d left and was studying to become a therapist, though Rossen and drummer Chris Bear continued to work together in the meantime, including on the soundtrack to the 2023 movie Past Lives.

Rossen also released his debut solo album, ‘You Belong There’, in 2022, and supported it with a series of North American and European tour dates.

Spitting Image team say they’re “baffled” by Paddington Bear lawsuit

by jummy84 October 9, 2025
written by jummy84

While most politicians and pop culture figures of the time took their puppet parodies (fairly) on the chin, the new revival of the veteran comedy show has ruffled someone’s feathers… or should we say fur.

Created by Al Murray and Matt Forde, the new Spitting Image revival, now available on YouTube, made headlines this week when it was revealed that StudioCanal, the French film and television production company behind the Paddington movies, and the Bond estate have filed a High Court complaint over copyright and design right concerns, following the depiction of the beloved bear.

“We’re baffled by that, to be honest,” says Murray. ‘If we were going to expect anything, it would be a hard stare from Paddington.”

Their radical reimagining of the sweet-natured bear sees Paddington as a foul-mouthed, crazy-eyed Pablo Escobar-esque parody, with a penchant for powder over marmalade sandwiches. He host’s the shows podcast ‘The Rest is Bullsh*t’, a parody of the Goalhanger ‘Rest is’ sphere, alongside an equally caricatured Prince Harry.

“If you’re looking for [podcast] hosts, you need two national treasures. There were the first names on the team sheet,” says Forde.

While his characterisation may be extreme, Forde and Murray insist it is only intended for purely comedic purposes.

“It’s the oldest thing in comedy,” explains Murray. “We’re not saying we’ve done anything particularly original. [Paddington] is normally presented as this very ‘goody-two-shoes’ character and we’ve flipped him over. It’s a very Spitting Image thing to do – to take someone and say ‘Hey, maybe they’re the opposite.’”

“I mean, they’ve fallen into a bear trap of their own making,” says Forde. “We’re getting tons more views as a result of the lawsuits publicity, so more people are watching this depiction of Paddington that they don’t want anyone to see.”

Is it potentially a case of miscommunication involving the ‘British sense of humour’?

“I mean taking the piss is a great British value, as is having a sense of humour about ourselves,” says Murray. “But there obviously has been a drift towards people who want to shut other people’s jokes up – and it’s weird, it seems like an attack on comedy really.”

“In my experience, people find you funny taking the p**s out of things, until you take the p**s out of something they like. Then they don’t find you funny anymore.”

But it’s the fact the call for legal action has come from fellow creatives that really surprises the pair.

“I would imagine that the people at StudioCanal who’ve come to this are the sorts of people who not long ago were pretty outraged by Jimmy Kimmel being pulled off air,” explains Murray. “If they’re sensitive, creative people that’s probably how they felt about it.”

“But they’re trying to do that to our absurdist, ridiculous Paddington and that leaves me scratching my head.”

Whilst they may see a funny side in the call for legal action, (“We are literally talking about a fictional bear and a puppet show!” exclaims Murray at one point) the pair recognise that the dispute over their depiction of Paddington highlights a wider conversation on freedom of speech in our current political climate.

“It’s terrifying that pressure can come from all sorts of different places,” says Forde. “I think the risk is that these kinds of authoritarian instincts exist on left and right.

“They exist in governments; they exist in corporations. We’re living in an era where politicians can get you taken off the air and the consequences of that – and it’s not just comedy – will close people in all sorts of other industries down.

“People need to be careful about thinking. ‘Well, I never liked Jimmy Kimmel anyway, so I’m fine with it’ because eventually, they will get round to you, and they will shut you up.

“Comedy is an easy first target because people don’t like being laughed at, but it’s not comedy that they have an issue with. It’s the freedom of speech.”

Their new YouTube show was born out of the success of their live theatre production – Idiots Assemble: Spitting Image The Musical created by Murray and Forde, alongside Sean Foley. It was during this run they realised the new medium of theatre, unlike TV, avoided outsider input in what content their show could cover.

“There was no one between us and the audience,” explains Murray, “That was what was brilliant about it.”

“As stand-ups we’re used to that,” agrees Forde, “You write it, you perform it and there is a purity in that. Once it filters through more layers, it becomes tamer, and I think in the modern era people want comedy like this to really pack a punch.”

Read more: Spitting Image 2025 is funny, filthy, forensic and, on YouTube, a force for good

Their YouTube series is not the first revival of the iconic ’80s show. Spitting Image was briefly resurrected in 2021, with both Murray and Forde working on the show as writers and voice actor respectively, parodying a new cast of political and pop culture figures, from Donald Trump to Greta Thunberg. It was cancelled by ITV after just two series.

Hosting their show on YouTube has allowed for this greater freedom when creating the satirical sketches.

“The danger sometimes with television is it becomes very bureaucratic and slow,” says Forde. “The comedy can almost get legislated out of a sketch. I think this smaller team and nimbler production has allowed it to just hit harder.”

And it seems the public would agree. The show’s viewing numbers on YouTube have hit nearly 12 million views and is reaching millions more across other streaming platforms.

The pair believe the media reaction highlights a clear appetite for cutting political satire and hope to bring the beloved classic to the smartphone generation.

“There are different themes, different celebrities, that you want to be lampooning,” says Forde. “To be able to apply that in 2025 when you’ve got TikTok and X and Instagram and make something the younger generation really love – that’s a real thrill.”

It’s not just Paddington viewers can tune into watch; the show parodies a host of recognisable figures faces, from Taylor Swift to Vladamir Putin. But for Forde, with his spot-on impersonation, his favourite has to be Trump.

“Trump is so much fun,” he says. “The puppet is phenomenal; it’s a grotesque recreation of him. When we’re writing and ad-libbing in the room, you’re inside the mind of this maniac and we have the tools to bring him to life in our own way.”

Parodying figures from all reals of the political spectrum, the pair maintain they never let their personal politics influence their character choices or depictions either.

“They’re all fair game and it’s just so much fun taking the p**s out of them,” says Forde. “But for each one there must be that grain of truth to it. It must be silly and big and daft, but you need to hit upon something that people recognise in those characters.

“In a way, the politics falls away from it. These are characters you’re satirising. They just happen to be political ones.”

“If the impression goes with the puppet,” says Murray, “…it doesn’t need to be laser point accurate because the puppets, after all, aren’t. They’ve got the essence of the person… it’s like, as Matt’s saying, it’s got to have the grain of truth in it. And then you dial it all up.”

The current run of Spitting Image will last for 12 episodes, but what about the show’s future?

“We’re seeing if it’ll work and whether the audience will come to it,” says Murray. “And we haven’t got to wait for someone to say yes, you spend so much time in comedy coming up with things and having to wait for someone to say yes.”

“I mean purely as a viewer, you think, why are these things so rare?” continues Forde. “It’s immensely frustrating that Spitting Image wasn’t around for so long.

“So many of the things we’ve done even in the last two episodes have gone viral, so there is a huge appetite for this sort of comedy. You want it to always be around.”

And what about our furry friend? It looks like he’ll be sticking around – he’s not heading back to Peru just yet.

‘I think if you were to ask our Paddington…” teases Forde. “You know, he’s an energetic guy, wants to work a lot…”

Spitting Image is available now on YouTube.
