Hilary Duff’s new song based on ‘brief experience’ with ex

Hilary Duff’s new song Mature is based on a “brief experience” with an ex.

Hilary Duff’s new song based on ‘brief experience’ with ex

The 38-year-old singer-and-actress teamed up with her Grammy-winning songwriter/producer husband Matthew Koma to write the single but admitted it was about a past romantic partner.

She told Vogue: “It is definitely about a brief experience that I had in my [life] — a long, long time ago. It is not totally autobiographical. I took a few artistic liberties just to make the song work structurally, but the gist is the gist.

“I was looking back on this relationship and thinking about whether this guy had a habit of dating younger women or whether I was ‘special’. The whole experience was super therapeutic to write about, but being so vulnerable through your music can be really scary.

“Mature is a conversation with my younger self about being happy with where I landed. Part of it was an idea that Matt originated… Matt obviously knows all the stories from my past, and he’s so great at coming up with a concept where I get to go in and interior design the whole thing. The song is about reflecting on your past and coming to terms with the choices you’ve made, but without being too hard on yourself. It’s a fun record, but it’s secretly kinda heavy too.”

And, Hilary – who has son Luca with first husband Mike Comrie – revealed she never thought about getting married again until she met Matthew.

She said: “He’s just the best f****** human and my number-one cheerleader. He believes in me beyond any vision I have for myself. I couldn’t imagine making new music with anyone else. I never thought I wanted to get married again until I met him. We had Banks before we got married, and while I was pregnant I kinda hated his guts. I couldn’t stand the way he walked and chewed because all of this stuff was just so terrifying. Every day I looked in the mirror like, Oh my God, what am I doing? Then we had the baby and I saw what a great dad he is. I was like, Wait, I’m actually obsessed with you!”

Now, with just days left until the supernatural horror-comedy film releases, the film’s lead stars – ‘Alok Goyal’ Ayushmann Khurrana and ‘Yakshasan’ Nawazuddin Siddiqui sat down for an exclusive chat with Bollywood Bubble host Ankita Bhalla. Is ‘Psycho’ Based on Ed Gein? Movies & Shows Inspired by Serial Killer – Hollywood Life

by jummy84 October 6, 2025

Few true crime stories have cast as long a shadow over Hollywood as Ed Gein’s. The Wisconsin murderer and grave robber horrified the nation in the 1950s and went on to inspire some of the most iconic horror films ever made. Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho (1960) famously drew from Gein’s twisted crimes, transforming real-life terror into cinematic history. But Psycho was only the beginning.

Over the years, Gein’s disturbing legacy has continued to influence filmmakers, from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre to The Silence of the Lambs and, more recently, Netflix’s Monster: The Ed Gein Story. His name remains synonymous with the blurred line between fact and fiction in horror.

Below, learn how Psycho was inspired by Ed Gein, and see which other movies and TV shows were shaped by his chilling story.

Who Is Ed Gein?

Gein was an American murderer and grave robber from Plainfield, Wisconsin, whose gruesome crimes shocked the world in the 1950s. Born on August 27, 1906, Gein lived an isolated life under the strict control of his religious and abusive mother, Augusta Gein, who instilled in him a fear of women and sin.

After her death, Gein began robbing graves, exhuming bodies, and fashioning household items and clothing out of human remains. His deeply disturbed actions would later make him one of the most infamous figures in American criminal history.

What Happened to Ed Gein?

On November 16, 1957, local hardware store owner Bernice Worden went missing in Plainfield, Wisconsin. Investigators traced her disappearance to Gein. When police searched his farmhouse, they uncovered Worden’s mutilated body, along with furniture, masks, and clothing made from human skin and bones. Gein admitted to killing two women—Worden and Mary Hogan, a tavern owner who vanished in 1954—as well as robbing graves for years.

In 1958, he was declared legally insane and committed to Central State Hospital for the Criminally Insane, later transferred to Mendota Mental Health Institute. He remained institutionalized for the rest of his life and died in 1984 at the age of 77 from respiratory failure due to cancer.

Was Psycho (1960) Inspired by Ed Gein?

Yes. Hitchcock’s Psycho was directly inspired by Gein’s real-life crimes. The film’s protagonist, Norman Bates, mirrors Gein in several unsettling ways: both were isolated men with domineering mothers whose deaths triggered psychological breakdowns.

The novel Psycho, written by Robert Bloch in 1959, was influenced by Gein’s case, as Bloch lived just 35 miles from Plainfield. Hitchcock later adapted Bloch’s story into the iconic 1960 film, making Norman Bates one of cinema’s most enduring horror figures.

Movies & Shows Based on Ed Gein

Over the decades, Gein’s story has continued to influence filmmakers and storytellers across generations. His crimes have inspired numerous films and television projects, including The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), Deranged: Confessions of a Necrophile (1974), The Silence of the Lambs (1991), Ed Gein (2000), and Ed Gein: The Butcher of Plainfield (2007).

Most recently, Netflix revisited his story in Monster: The Ed Gein Story (2025), starring Charlie Hunnam as Gein and Laurie Metcalf as his mother, Augusta.

What The Dark Hearts Are Based On

by jummy84 September 30, 2025
written by jummy84

Initially, the Dark Hearts, the fictional drug-dealing biker gang in the new HBO miniseries “Task,” was born out of plot necessity. As IndieWire previously covered, the narrative structure of “Task” was inspired by Michael Mann’s 1995 crime classic “Heat,” placing its audience in the position of rooting for both FBI Agent Tom Brandis (Mark Ruffalo) and the thief, Robbie Prendergrast (Tom Pelphrey), he is chasing.

“Robbie’s a good guy, and I always saw him as a good guy, and Pelphrey saw him as a good guy, so we needed someone to add danger to the story. It was a plot need early on,” said “Task” creator Brad Ingelsby on an upcoming episode of the Filmmaker Toolkit podcast when discussing the origins of the Dark Hearts. “So, who’s closing in the walls around Robbie? The audience needed to be scared, and eventually you have to have a bad guy come in and the audience go, ‘Oh crap.’”

Glen Powell in 'Chad Powers,' the new Hulu series

One of the reasons “Task” is a success is that while it leans into conventions of the crime genre with tropes including a “Sons of Anarchy”-like biker gang, it is grounded in reality and regional specificity. Growing up 30 minutes outside Philadelphia in Chester County, just a stone’s throw away from Delaware County where “Task” is set, Ingelsby had heard tales of the legendary motorcycle club The Warlocks, but as he started to do his research to flesh out the details of his Dark Hearts bikers, he hit a wall.

“All the cops and detectives we talked to were like, ‘Dude, they’re all druggies. They’re all just selling so they can get high. And there wasn’t a loyalty, there’s no code,’” said Ingelsby. “And yet I didn’t want to lean into that stereotypical [gang].”

While the ruthless Dark Hearts were born of the need for an antagonistic force, Ingelsby wanted them to have the same complexity as his other characters, and for the audience to understand, if not sympathize with, the pressures being placed on the father-son-like relationship between Perry (Jamie McShane) and Jayson (Sam Keeley).

“In the early drafts, the bikers didn’t work as well, and Brad knew it,” said “Task” executive producer and director Jeremiah Zagar, who collaborated with Ingelsby in developing the project. “I felt like [what] was missing was the realism of that biker gang, and what they did, the specificity of how they did it, and the specificity of culture.”

When Zagar and his producing partner, Jeremy Yaches, came aboard “Task,” they started to help the research-driven creator find consultants who went beyond law enforcement’s narrow view of the regional MCs. It was during this period that Zagar, who grew up in South Philly, received an unexpected phone call from a friend he hadn’t spoken with in nearly 20 years.

“He was my closest friend growing up, my best friend when I was a kid. We basically lived together, and he moved in with my family for a summer. The closest thing I had to family that wasn’t blood,” said Zagar. “I hadn’t talked to him in forever and he said, ‘I’m a recovering drug addict, I’m involved with the church, [but] I was in this biker gang for years and all that’s over now.” And I said, ‘This is so crazy. I’m doing a show about a biker gang, do you want be a consultant on the show?’”

At the time “Task” was still being written, Zagar’s friend had reservations about officially consulting due to his pending legal matters stemming from his biker days, and decided to do so “somewhat undercover.” Those legal problems, though, are now resolved: His name, Carim Mow, officially appears in the “Task” credits, and IndieWire has been granted permission to print his name in this article, as his role in helping Ingelsby crack the Dark Hearts was invaluable.

‘Task’

“He expressed a love for this culture in this community, a sense of brotherhood and purpose that we didn’t get from the cops because he was inside that gang, and those were his family,” said Zagar of Mow’s contribution. Added Ingelsby, “We leaned on him a lot, throughout the series… He was such a great resource to call and go, ‘Hey man, here’s what we’ve written. You make it better. Tell us what’s not real and what’s real, and we’ll change anything.’”

The level of specificity mattered and went beyond Ingelsby’s scripts. Mow, who was a presence on set, also aided Zagar, his crew, and the cast in bringing authenticity to the gang’s relationship to motorcycles, guns, and drugs.

“When he spoke to the actors about the guns that they use or the drugs that they sold, or the way they sold those drugs, why they did that, and how they did it, was with such specificity and knowledge and intimacy. And I think it made the show great and I think it made those characters so great,” said Zagar. “And it was really cool — it was a moving way for me and my friend to reconnect.”

Episode 5 of “Task” airs on HBO and HBO Max on Sunday, October 5.

Is ‘Adolescence’ Based on a True Story? Truth of the Netflix Series – Hollywood Life

When Adolescence premiered in March 2025, it quickly earned a reputation as one of the most chilling, unsettling U.K. television series in recent memory. After the four-part miniseries hit Netflix in the U.S., viewers were left shaken—and full of questions. Was Jamie Miller, the chilling lead played by breakout star Owen Cooper, inspired by a real person?

Below, Hollywood Life breaks down the gripping one-shot drama and how creators Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham brought the Emmy Award-winning haunting story to life.

What Is Adolescence About?

Adolescence follows 13-year-old Jamie’s arrest and how his family’s world is turned upside down in the aftermath. Accused of murdering a classmate named Katie, Jamie faces the consequences of his actions while his parents confront their worst nightmare and as detectives investigate his motive.

Did Jamie Kill Katie in Adolescence?

Yes, Jamie’s crime is revealed in the first episode when he is interviewed by investigators. Though he insists he hasn’t “done anything wrong” to his father (played by co-creator and writer Stephen), police show them surveillance footage of  Jamie stabbing Katie to death. In episode 4, Jamie tells his dad that he’s changing his plea from not guilty to guilty.

Is Adolescence Based on a True Story?

Adolescence is not based on a particular real-life crime. Stephen informed Netflix’s Tudum that he was inspired to work on the script when he heard about an incident in the U.K. when a “young boy [allegedly] stabbed a girl.”

“It shocked me,” Stephen elaborated, adding, “I was thinking, ‘What’s going on? What’s happening in society where a boy stabs a girl to death? What’s the inciting incident here?’ And then it happened again, and it happened again, and it happened again. I really just wanted to shine a light on it, and ask, ‘Why is this happening today? What’s going on? How have we come to this?’”

Co-creator Jack added that he, Stephen and director Philip Barantini were fascinated by the concept of male rage, and they began “questioning with some intensity” who they were as men. “That is a journey I’ve never gone on as a writer before, and it scared me and excited me because it felt like we had something to say,” Jack pointed out.

Adolescence‘s Ending Explained

The final episode of Adolescence ends with Jamie calling his dad to reveal he’s changing his plea to guilty. Stephen’s character, Eddie Miller, then reflects on how his parenting played a role in his son’s life. He and Jamie’s mother, Manda Miller (played by Christine Tremarco) discuss the warning signs they witnessed with Jamie, including the teen staying up late at night on his computer.

The final moments of episode 4 show Eddie sobbing in Jamie’s room and tucking in his stuffed animal under the covers before apologizing to Jamie, fully accepting his fate.

“I’m sorry, son,” Eddie says through tears, before admitting, “I should have done better.”

Will There Be More Episodes of Adolescence?

No, Adolescence ends with episode 4, and so far, there is no word on the potential for a season 2.
