IDFA Chief On Decision To Ban Israeli State-Backed Orgs From Festival

by jummy84 November 16, 2025
written by jummy84

In her welcoming letter to IDFA guests, the festival’s new artistic director Isabel Arrate Fernandez writes, “In these uncertain times we need the voices of filmmakers and artists more than ever.”

As if responding to that call, some of the greatest documentary filmmakers of our time are bringing new work to the 38th edition of International Documentary Festival Amsterdam: Laura Poitras, Vitaly Mansky, Victor Kossakovsky, Mstyslav Chernov, Tamara Kotevska, Susana de Sousa Dias, Raoul Peck, Gianfranco Rosi, Werner Herzog, Chai Vasarhelyi, Jimmy Chin, Jay Rosenblatt, Claire Simon, Tia Lessin, Carl Deal and many, many more.

“We meet at a time when we are confronted daily by images of war, injustice, violence, and the genocide in Gaza,” Arrate Fernandez writes, “images that demand our empathy, confront us with the limits of what we can comprehend, even stretching our belief in humanity itself.”

‘Gaza’s Twins, Come Back to Me’

IDFA

Multiple films in the lineup address the war in Gaza that has claimed tens of thousands of lives, including Gaza’s Twins, Come Back to Me, directed by Mohammed Sawwaf, and The Clown of Gaza, directed by Abdulrahman Sabbah.

“They’re really made by people that live there, that come from this place and have been on the ground experiencing all these atrocities,” Arrate Fernandez tells Deadline. “In their storytelling and what the films end up being, they really go further than what we’ve seen in the news in the last two years… bringing the stories of people living there, of a mother, of a man trying to provide for his family through his job. And in that way, I think [they] also manage to create human bridges [by] focusing on exactly these human stories.”

Coexistence, My Ass!, directed by Amber Fares, “looks at what has been happening in the last two years [in Israel and Gaza] from a different perspective and bringing in the comedy elements,” Arrate Fernandez notes. The short documentary Return to al-Ma’in, from Forensic Architecture, examines what has become of a Palestinian village seized by Israeli militia in 1948.

'Silent Flood'

Neither is IDFA ignoring the ongoing war in Ukraine, which is examined in Oscar winner Mstyslav Chernov’s 2000 Meters to Andriivka, Vitaly Mansky’s Time to the Target, and several other films in the program: Militantropos, directed by Alina Gorlova, Simon Mozgovyi, and Yelizaveta Smit, and Silent Flood, directed by Dmytro Sukholytkyy-Sobchuk.

“Militantropos and Silent Flood really bring in this case a different angle, a more in-depth view of and reflection of this war that has been going on now since 2022 or even before, because it started in 2014,” Arrate Fernandez says, “and take it a little bit beyond the immediate war casualties and war stories.”

IDFA, under the leadership of previous artistic director Orwa Nyrabia, spoke out forcefully against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and has made concerted efforts to support the Ukrainian documentary filmmaking community through the IDFA Bertha Fund. That’s in line with its stated mission to be “a committed institution with a socially critical perspective.” But controversy has attended a decision by IDFA this year to bar Israeli state-backed organizations from attending the festival, citing what it considers the Israeli government’s human rights abuses. IDFA rejected accreditation requests from Israel’s DocAviv Festival, CoPro – The Israeli Content Marketing Foundation, and public broadcaster Kan, and has similarly banned state-back organizations from Russia and Iran.

“Many people think we are refusing filmmakers, film professionals, that we categorically boycott Israeli films or for that matter, other films. And that is not the case,” Arrate Fernandez insists. “We made a decision to not accredit these organizations, but we are open to [individual] filmmakers and film professionals from all over. We watched all the films that we received, the ones from Israel, but also the ones from Russia, also the ones from Iran or from what other country that at this moment is not really upholding human rights values. And we based our decision on watching these films and then looking into, if we were interested in selecting them, who’s funding these films.”

She added, “Looking back, [the decision] created some confusion. I am not sure this is something that we could have avoided.”

On its website, IDFA writes, “This week, several media outlets have falsely claimed that IDFA does not accept filmmakers or films from Israel. This is incorrect. IDFA does not exclude individual, independent filmmakers and film professionals—including those from Israel.”

The festival website also notes, “Recently, IDFA joined 713 organizations and 2,163 artists in signing the Dutch and Belgian cultural boycott against Israel. This boycott is in line with our existing guidelines: to exclude institutions financed by the Israeli government. This does not apply to all films, filmmakers, or other film professionals from Israel.”

This is Arrate Fernandez’s inaugural year as artistic director, but she has long been connected to the institution, serving for more than two decades as executive director of the IDFA Bertha Fund and leading IDFA’s filmmaker support department.

“I’ve been part of this organization for a long time in a different role,” she says, recalling memorable experiences from previous IDFAs. “I will never forget when [director] Victor Kossakovsky came running with the tape under his arm to screen Tishe! for the first time to an audience and I had to pick him up at the station to get him on time in the cinema because people were already sitting there… Having Victor coming back to premiere Trillion at the festival is very exciting as he’s been a regular of the festivals for so many years.”

'Trillion'

‘Trillion’

IDFA

Trillion premieres in the Envision competition alongside Sky Hopinka’s Powwow People; I Want Her Dead, directed by Gianluca Matarrese; Confessions of a Mole, directed by Mo Tan, Amílcar, directed by Miguel Eek, and other films.

“It’s such a varied selection,” Arrate Fernandez observes. “[With] Envision, I think one of the things the team truly enjoys is exactly exploring how filmmakers are working with documentary language in bringing across their stories but also playing with it and challenging us as viewers with what they make.”

'Fordlândia Panacea'

‘Fordlândia Panacea’

Susana de Sousa Dias/IDFA

Fordlândia Panacea also premieres in Envision, a documentary by Portuguese artist and filmmaker Susana de Sousa Dias, who is IDFA’s Guest of Honor this year. The film explores a strange colonial scheme in the 20th century when automaker Henry Ford attempted to create a rubber plantation in the Amazon rainforest of Brazil.

De Sousa Dias “has really changed the way also other documentary filmmakers work with archive where she’s really dissecting and exploring, examining this archive more than using it as an image to tell a story, to illustrate a story,” Arrate Fernandez comments. “She’s really looking, examining the archive in a way also to expose what is not there or what has not been told or what is not being told by the people making this archive.”

Many films with Oscar aspirations are represented in the IDFA program, including The Six Billion Dollar Man, Eugene Jarecki’s film about Wikileaks founder Julian Assange; Raoul Peck’s Orwell: 2+2=5; Cover-Up, directed by Laura Poitras and Mark Obenhaus; Julia Loktev with My Undesirable Friends: Part I – Last Air in Moscow; Cutting Through Rocks, directed by Sara Khaki and Mohammadreza Eyni; Seeds, directed by Brittany Shyne; The Tale of Silyan, directed by Tamara Kotevska, Love+War, directed by Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, as well as the aforementioned 2000 Meters to Andriivka; Coexistence, My Ass!, and other Academy Award contenders.

IDFA is well timed to aid filmmakers in the Oscar hunt, coming just a few weeks before the start of voting on the Oscar shortlists for documentary and short doc.

“With this role that IDFA has gotten in this race, it brings together different worlds in the gathering because with the internationalization of the documentary branch of the Academy, a big part of these members are not based in the U.S. and many of them do come to IDFA,” Arrate Fernandez says. “So here we have this crossing points where the U.S. side and the non-U.S. side can meet and engage. I think that’s very, very valuable also for the whole industry.”

Screening more than 250 films, including work in VR, IDFA brings together thousands of film professionals from around the world. While the program is set, there’s no telling what will develop on the ground – in meetings, at panel discussions, or as Arrate Fernandez puts it, “on the side… backstage.” There, interesting possibilities emerge “in terms of production contacts, who’s talking to who. New things and new collaborations can come out of that.”

Dua Lipa Denies Firing Agent Over Attempt to Ban Kneecap from Glastonbury

by jummy84 September 24, 2025

Dua Lipa and her talent agency, William Morris Endeavor (WME), have responded to a report that she fired her European agent, David Levy, after he signed a leaked letter calling for pro-Palestinian rappers Kneecap to be banned from Glastonbury Festival.

Over the weekend, The Daily Mail reported that Levy was the first signatory among many Jewish music industry figures who sent a letter to Glastonbury founder Michael Eavis and his daughter Emily requesting Kneecap’s removal from this year’s festival.

“Dua made sure through her people that David Levy wasn’t working on her music any more. She is very openly pro-Palestine and that doesn’t align with David,” a source told the Daily Mail. “She views him as being a supporter of Israel’s war in Gaza, and the terrible treatment of the Palestinians and that was made very clear through the letter that he signed and sent to Michael Eavis.”

On Tuesday, September 23rd, Dua Lipa posted a statement on her Instagram Stories distancing herself from Levy while also clarifying the report. “I do not condone the actions of David Levy or other music executives toward an artist speaking their truth,” she wrote. “I also cannot ignore how this has been handled in the press. Not only was the story completely false, but the language used by The Daily Mail has been deliberately inflammatory, crafted purely for clickbait, clearly designed to fuel online division.”

The artist continued, “It is always Free Palestine but exploiting a global tragedy in order to sell newspapers is something I find deeply troubling.”

A spokesperson for WME also strongly rebuked the tabloid’s claims in a statement issued to NME: “Reports suggesting that Dua Lipa or her management dismissed one of our agents because of his political views are categorically false. David Levy played a role in Dua’s early career (2016-2019) and as is customary, is credited both internally and in industry journals as being a member of the team. When he moved out of London in 2019, he transitioned into an advisory role and has not been involved in Dua’s day-to-day business since. Levy fully removed himself from the project among others earlier this year.”

Dua Lipa has been open with her views about the Gaza conflict. In a 2024 interview with Rolling Stone, she called for a “humanitarian cease-fire” in Israel’s attack on the Palestinian people, adding that she “feel[s] so bad for every Israeli life lost and what happened on October 7th.”

“At the moment, what we have to look at is how many lives have been lost in Gaza, and the innocent civilians, and the lives that are just being lost,” she continued. “There are just not enough world leaders that are taking a stand and speaking up about the humanitarian crisis that’s happening, the humanitarian cease-fire that has to happen.”

Later that year, Dua Lipa reiterated her stance on Instagram after dozens of Palestinians were killed in attacks on Gaza displacement camps. “Burning children alive can never be justified,” she wrote. “The whole world is mobilising to stop the Israeli genocide. Please show your solidarity with Gaza.”

Kneecap’s Glastonbury appearance went on as planned, although their set was not livestreamed by the BBC. While the performance led to a criminal investigation, the case was dropped shortly after.

Since making pro-Palestine messaging central to their performance at Coachella 2025, Kneecap has faced a firestorm of backlash, including an investigation by UK authorities into resurfaced videos of the rap trio allegedly expressing support for Hamas and Hezbollah.

Although Kneecap issued a statement clarifying they “do not, and have never, supported Hamas or Hezbollah,” member Mo Chara was later charged with a terror offense for allegedly displaying a flag supporting Hezbollah. The case has been adjourned until later this month.

Most recently, the group was banned from Canada ahead of their scheduled October tour.

Dua Lipa is currently on the North American leg of her “Radical Optimism Tour.” Read our review of one of her recent New York City shows, and get tickets here.

As the Asia Cup 2025 approaches, actor Zayed Khan backs Team India, expressing confidence in their new players.

As the cricketing world braces for one of the most anticipated matches of the year, India vs Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2025, actor Zayed Khan has thrown his full support behind Team India. He has voiced his confidence in the new generation of players amid heightened tensions between the two countries following Operation Sindoor.

Zayed Khan supports the India Vs Pakistan match during the Asia Cup 2025 despite political tensions and believes in Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy.

Zayed Khan backs India Vs Pak match

Talking to news agency ANI, Zayed said, “I think India will knock it out of the park. I think India is a very good team aur mujhe lagta hai ki 100 per cent India jeetne waali hai (I think India is going to win 100 per cent).”

When asked if the match should be played despite the political tensions between the two countries, he said, “Kyu nahi yar, sports to sports hai, jo bhi sambandh bante hai ban ne do (Why not? Sport is sport. Whatever relations can be made, let them be made).”

He also fully believed in Surya Kumar Yadav’s captaincy for the Asia Cup and said, “SKY is such a good batsman. He also has experience in IPL. He can be a good captain. The new generation should also take responsibility. Let them take it.”

India at the Asia Cup

India, under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav, kicked off their Asia Cup campaign with a commanding nine-wicket victory over the United Arab Emirates in Dubai. After dismissing the UAE for a mere 57 runs in just 13.1 overs, the defending champions comfortably chased down the target.

The much-anticipated India vs Pakistan clash is set for 8 pm IST on Sunday at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. This match marks Suryakumar Yadav’s first time captaining India against their fierce rivals. Depending on how the tournament unfolds, the two teams could face each other up to three times, including a potential final showdown.

Meanwhile, Zayed is gearing up to make his digital debut with the upcoming project, The Film That Never Was.

Spice Calls Out Jamaican School For Hair Policy

St. Andrews, an all-girls high school, is going viral on social media after they dropped a post saying young girls can no longer rock edges. The message lit up on the internet instantly, and Spice shared her thoughts. The Jamaican-bred artist clearly wasn’t feeling the new rule, posting a video of a young girl on her Instagram Stories with her hair styled in a braided and twisted bun. Spice captioned the clip with her thoughts and called out Jamaica’s school system, saying baby hairs won’t block learning. “Jamaica school systems always focusing on the wrong thing KMT. How this hairstyle ago stop this little girl  from leaning?” she wrote.

Social Media Is Split Over St. Andrews Edge Ban

The Roomies were left split in TSR’s comment section after Spice shared her thoughts on St. Andrews’ edge ban. Some folks agreed with the school’s decision, while others thought the rule was a bit much. Peep some of the reactions below.

Instagram user @2knokz wrote, “it’s literally hair😭cmon now, how does that affect learning?”

Instagram user @shyannjadoretaylor wrote, “As a Jamaican, too much edges can be tacky in the uniform. There’s a time and place for everything. Dress modest and go learn.”

While Instagram user @tinamarikka wrote, “The Jamaican school system do too much sometimes 🙄”

Then Instagram user @niwakhe_umzi wrote, “If the girls are being distracted from their studies because they meet up in bathrooms or other places in school to do their edges then! This is not wrong at all.”

Another Instagram user @tdot619_ wrote, “Caribbean schools take education and appearance seriously. That’s all I’m gonna say.”

Instagram user @vivi.anelovee wrote, “Leave edges alone 😩”

While another Instagram user @kariferrarii1 wrote, “All I see is more policing black girls…”

Then another Instagram user @_ally101 wrote, “Different countries different rules!! You guys don’t know Jamaica school system and Spice should know better! 🙄”

Here’s What St. Andrews Said In Their New Hair Policy

St. Andrews isn’t playing when it comes to baby hair. The high school started going viral after they shared a poster on their official Instagram page telling the girls that edges are no longer permitted on campus. St. Andrews also asked the young ladies to keep their looks neat and even called the swoop edges curtains. See their now-viral message below.

“Remember, curtains belong in the house, not on foreheads! 😅 Let’s keep our looks neat and school-ready.”

Alberta Book Ban Paused After Margaret Atwood Mocks Measure

by jummy84 September 3, 2025
written by jummy84

Try to ban The Handmaid’s Tale and you’ll face the literary scorn of Margaret Atwood. Alberta’s government has learned as much from its now paused censorship measure.

In a short story published online this past weekend, Atwood slammed MAGA-ish Premier Danielle Smith, “selfish rapacious capitalism,” Ayn Rand fanboys, and the hypocrisy of paying “no attention to what Jesus actually said about the poor and the Good Samaritan and forgiving your enemies.” For former radio host Smith, Atwood saved a special bit of Serena Joy (if you’ve seen the Emmy winning Hulu series that ran from 2017 to 2025, you’ll get it): “So they lived happily ever after. But while they were doing that The Handmaid’s Tale came true and Danielle Smith found herself with a nice new blue dress but no job. The end.”

Proving you should never doubt the power of the pen (or in this case, the post), and that most bullies can’t take a punch, Premier Smith’s government today announced via an email to school boards the ban was being halted “until further notice.” Education and Childcare Minister Demetrios Nicolaides stated that more info about the ban/not ban would become clear over the next week or so.

While widely-acclaimed, The Handmaid’s Tale was among the 200 books slated to be pulled from the school shelves in the oil-rich Canadian province because of alleged sexually explicit material.

In July, the Education and Childcare Ministry of Smith’s government ordered local school boards to institute the policy (read the original NSFW Ministerial Order here) by October, a month into the school year. Under the policy, ninth graders and below wouldn’t be allowed any access to such books, while those in Grade 10 and up would only be allowed to read such material if it was deemed educationally appropriate.

The often-explicit Bible was exempt, but along with Atwood’s 1985 novel on a theocratic takeover of the USA , Aldous Huxley’s classic Brave New World and Maya Angelou’s autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings were among the 200 books the Edmonton Public School board said last week were going under lock and key because of the new provincial policy.

That just wasn’t on with Margaret Atwood.

The prolific 85-year-old scribe took to social media on August 31 to offer a “piece of literature by me, suitable for seventeen-year-olds in Alberta schools, unlike — we are told — The Handmaid’s Tale. (Sorry, kids; your Minister of Education thinks you are stupid babies.)”

That prologue of sorts might be the most blunt, literally and figuratively part of the 196-word yarn, which was picked up, reposted and liked all over the globe. You can read it here:

Here’s a piece of literature by me, suitable for seventeen-year-olds in Alberta schools, unlike — we are told — The Handmaid’s Tale. (Sorry, kids; your Minister of Education thinks you are stupid babies.)

John and Mary were both very, very good children. They never picked…

— Margaret E Atwood (@MargaretAtwood) August 31, 2025

Not long after her government walked back its book ban measure, for now, Premier Smith Tuesday said the revamped goal was to take books with pornographic images out of the libraries and to leave the classics alone.”

On this side of the border, the classics and soon to be classics are not being left alone, in a potentially good way.

Handmaid’s Tale star and EP Elisabeth Moss will executive produce a sequel based on Atwood’s 2019 book The Testaments alongside THT collaborators Bruce Miller and Warren Littlefield. Hulu hasn’t given a release date yet for the series, but production on Season 1 started back in April.

Wonder if a certain Western Canadian politician may be making an inadvertent cameo?
