Jennifer Lawrence Ditches Baggy Jeans for Dakota Johnson’s Go-To Skinny Style

When Jennifer Lawrence dabbles in denim, the fit is typically loose and pooling over a pair of sneakers or flip-flops. That was not the case ahead of the New York premiere of Die My Love on November 1.

Before she swooped her bangs to the side and threw on a stunning Dior gown, Lawrence was photographed in Midtown wearing a pair of cigarette jeans that cut just below the ankle joint, showing off her pointed kitten heels. If you don’t think that’s off-brand for Lawrence, let me show you a few of Lawrence’s rare denim moments from the past two years, including her recent tip-toe into the boot-cut jeans trend.

Vogue has even more examples of Lawrence’s go to slouchy jeans and sneaker combo if you’re not convinced. While I was able to find one straight-leg style she wore back in April 2024, even that high-waisted option was paired with yellow Vans. It should also be noted that all of these jeans fall into the mid-wash category.

All this to say, I was not expecting to see Lawrence break out a pair of kitten heels or dark wash cigarette jeans on her way to the red carpet premiere of her new film Die My Love, especially considering she’d be changing right out of her gown and into another after-party dress and heels after that.

But that’s exactly what she did. It seems she was influenced by Hollywood friend Dakota Johnson, who is known to love a slim pair of straight-leg jeans, though the rest of the look certainly screamed Jennifer Lawrence.

The key to making the denim her own, however, came down to Lawrence’s signature eclectic layering choices. She paired her atypical jeans with a long floral embroidered cardigan and short belted calf-hair coat for a rich mix of textures. She finished everything off with a pair of chic black sunglasses.

The perfect mid-point between skinny jeans and more relaxed mom jeans, it’s no wonder the cigarette jeans are having a moment that even the boho girls can’t resist.

Emma Stone Proves Your Baggy Fall Sweater’s Best Companion Is a Silk Miniskirt

I have a dilemma and Emma Stone just gave me the solution.

Fall in Los Angeles is a tricky time for fashion lovers. It’s starting to cool down enough to dip our toes into sweater weather, but still too mild for the layers that really make a look stand out. If you’re the kind of girl who loves cashmere and a leather bomber jacket, you’re kind of stuck in an either-or situation, which creates a bit of a styling dilemma.

My current problem is that I have completely purged my wardrobe of any pants—jeans or otherwise—that won’t leave me completely boxy when paired with pretty much any of my cozy fall sweaters, given I no longer own any styles that don’t fall into the wide-leg or barrel category. And while I could easily shop around for a cigarette jean to add to my collection, Emma Stone’s latest look gave me a better idea.

On October 25, Stone attended a Bugonia screening in an oversized oat-colored crewneck sweater and a matching silk miniskirt with a delicate lace hem, instantly creating a chic, cozy ensemble that looks expensive but requires very little effort to style. Stone herself simply added a simple beaded necklace and a pair of white sneakers, proving satin slip skirts and dresses are far less fussy than one might think.

Margot Robbie Dares You to Pair XL Baggy Jeans With This Fall’s Daintiest Flats

Margot Robbie embraced a “bigger is better” mentality for her latest look, except when it came down to footwear.

On October 17, the 35-year-old actor and constant source of denim inspo was spotted meeting up with her Wuthering Heights costar Jacob Elordi at The Bird Streets Club in West Hollywood, California. In new photos shared by DeuxMoi, both actors wore blue jackets with light-wash baggy denim and large bags, though Robbie truly maximized the impact of her look with XL jeans, an oversized navy leather trench coat, and truly capacious brown woven carryall. Even Robbie’s silk and lace top added extra volume with ruffles spilling over her loose-fitting jeans.

She couldn’t have strayed further from the popular “big pants, tiny top” styling technique, opting for oversized proportions at every opportunity until it was time to choose a pair of shoes. Instead of finishing off the look with a chunky fall boot, she stepped out in a pair of dainty ballet flats. And when I say ballet flats, I mean the pink satin kind that actually look like they were made for the stage. You can see the photos here.

MiuMiu practically declared the satin ballet flat the it-fall shoe back in 2022, sending models down the runway in various color combos of their dainty flats with warm chunky socks. This fall, however, similar styles are only increasing in popularity, popping up all over street-style photos and being sold in many variations, from more traditional designs to athletic sneaker hybrids like the ones beloved by Bella Hadid.

So, what’s the worst thing that can happen if you pair your baggiest denim with some dainty satin flats this fall? Perhaps the hem of your jeans fray against the rough city pavement. Honestly, that’s a cool look in and of itself. Go on and give it a try. Margot Robbie dares you.

The Only Denim Trend More Popular Than Baggy Jeans RN

As a fashion editor, I utilize a lot of different resources for my articles. Sometimes I’ll ask experts for advice, like I did with my recent guide to buying vintage women’s watches. Other times, I pore over runway shows for visual examples to support my latest trend theories. Today, I’m making use of another type of tool: data. To get statistical insights in the fashion industry, there’s no one better to tap than Madé Lapuerta, the founder of the popular Instagram account Data, But Make It Fashion. Clearly, Old Navy agrees, as the brand has partnered with Lapuerta on a new denim analysis.

Digging into Google search traffic and thousands of online posts, Lapuerta found that slim jeans are 43% more popular this month compared to last month. Baggy jeans trailed behind but were still up 22%. Skinny jeans and barrel jeans took third and fourth place, according to her report.

In an interview, Lapuerta explained her methodology. “Most analyses I conduct and post on Data, But Make it Fashion revolve around scraping and analyzing as much public data as I can get my hands on,” Lapuerta told Who What Wear. “For the Old Navy denim report, this included pulling online posts that mention ‘denim’ and denim styles such as ‘skinny jeans’ or ‘barrel jeans,’ and analyzing their monthly volume and average sentiment (how positive or negative each post or article is). I also included Google search traffic data. The combination of these metrics is important as it’s not enough to report on just how much more people are searching or talking about a trend, but also to correct for the tone in which they’re speaking about it. For instance, just because the number of posts mentioning skinny jeans increases doesn’t mean the popularity of skinny jeans increases, as all the posts could be negative. In this case, however, people were speaking about skinny jeans quite positively, which was interesting to see.” Scroll down to read the rest of our Q&A.

Your data shows that both slim and baggy jeans are trending right now. Why do you think that is?

It’s really interesting to see two conflicting trends rising in popularity at once, and in similar magnitudes. It’s possible that consumers genuinely love both. As Old Navy reported, the majority (74% of consumers) have two to three denim styles in their rotation. So, consumers can love skinny jeans in certain scenarios, like tucked into knee-high boots, and baggy jeans in others, like paired with a casual t-shirt and a pair of Uggs.

Or, if that’s not the case—if it’s a distinct population of consumers that love skinny jeans over baggy jeans, and vice versa—it’s also possible that consumers, in general, are becoming excited about denim as we head into fall. Ultimately, with so many different styles rising in popularity at once, it’s clear that the hype for denim is alive and well, regardless of which specific silhouette you’re excited about.

Do you have any insights on the most popular shoe styles people wear with different types of jeans for fall?
