How Will ‘Golden Bachelor’ Couple Defy the Odds?

written by jummy84

Finding love on reality TV isn’t easy — and neither is sustaining a long-term relationship once the cameras stop rolling. After wrapping the second season of ABC’s The Golden Bachelor, star Mel Owens and his winner, Peg Munson, say they aren’t looking to the couples before them for a roadmap.

“I don’t know about the others who came before us. I’m not worried about them. I’m worried about us,” Owens told The Hollywood Reporter one day after revealing the ending to his season during the live After the Final Rose finale special — that he picked Peg and that they remain together, though not engaged.

The first Golden Bachelor in the reality dating franchise, Gerry Turner, was in Owens’ live finale audience — but he was there with the fiancée he met after the show; his estranged ex, Theresa Nist, was also in attendance, though she noticeably kept her distance following back-and-forth allegations exchanged in the press.

“It’s a tough way to progress after the show, because I’ve only known her [Peg] for a few weeks before the show stopped filming. Now I’m getting to know her, and this is the first time we’re really together for a sustained time and out,” Owens explains. He and Munson finished filming their season three months prior and have been carrying out their relationship in hiding ever since. “When you’re sequestered in your home and you can’t leave, it’s tough to be real. You get to know each other better, but it’s tough,” he admits. “Our understanding 1763190927 is going to be to be together and grow.”

Before Owens even made his debut on ABC‘s senior-aged spinoff series of The Bachelor, the 66-year-old former NFL-player-turned-lawyer had to atone for some off-putting comments he made on a podcast shortly before filming began. The first night of his season featured his group of 60-and-over female contestants taking him to task for saying on that podcast that if the women are “60 or over, I’m cutting them.” He had said, “This is not The Silver Bachelor, this is The Golden Bachelor.”

But he apologized. The women forgave him, and then several of them fell for Owens, including runner-up Cindy Cullers, who self-eliminated before her Fantasy Suite overnight date because Owens said he wasn’t ready to propose by the end of the show.

“My whole thing [on the show] was that it has to happen naturally. It’s gonna take some time. I’m not gonna force anything, because I don’t have to force anything,” he says, standing by his stance that his goal at the end of the Golden Bachelor wasn’t a proposal. “Peg was on the same page all along. When we were in the Fantasy Suite, we spoke about it, and I went, ‘Wow, she’s on the same page.’ We’re going to write our own story when we want and whenever we want.”

Munson jumps in, adding to THR, “We’re not looking for a quick fix. We’re not looking for a quick marriage. We’re not looking for the quick proposal. As I said throughout the entire show, I’m not looking for the fireworks — they fizzle out. I’m looking for the fireplace. You refuel that fireplace and you get a beautiful, slow burn for the rest of our lives, and that’s what we want. We want that mature, sustainable relationship.”

Instead of promising forever, Owens gave Munson a promise ring. What that gesture means now to Munson, a 62-year-old retired firefighter and bomb tech from Las Vegas, is that they get to “continue to write our own love story.”

“Being in our 60s, it’s nice that we get the prerogative to do that,” she says. “As you grow older, you realize that’s something we’ve earned the right to do.”

Turning back to Cullers, Owens says “she had her own idea about what she wanted out of the show, and she wanted to be married off the island. She said it numerous times: ‘Til death do us part. I’m gonna be hand in hand, ring on my finger.’ She wanted to be married. That was her endgame. That wasn’t my endgame. My endgame is to find somebody and to understand them and have a life with them and grow slowly, like Peg said. Cindy wanted to be married. And I wasn’t going to tell her something that I didn’t hold true in my heart.”

Munson insists that the Owens she knows is “not afraid of commitment. He loves marriage. He loves commitment,” she says. “He just wasn’t ready to commit to her at that moment. We both want something sustainable. We want something long term, therefore, let’s take it slow. I know I felt love for him. He felt love for me. We get to write our own love story at this age, and that’s the cool part of it.”

Next up in the Bachelor franchise will be The Bachelorette (not the network’s usual winter staple, The Bachelor) for season 22 with Secret Lives of Mormon Wives star Taylor Frankie Paul in the title role, premiering March 22. The Golden Bachelor franchise has yet to be officially renewed, but both Owens and Munson put forth Debbie Siebers as their pick to be the next Golden Bachelorette (“If I was casting, that’s my No. 1 choice,” says Owens of his ex-contestant), while Munson has advice for the producers for a third season of The Golden Bachelor.

“Let things happen more naturally instead of pushing it,” she says of the reality dating process, which filmed for six weeks. “If there’s a connection, there’s going to be a connection. You can’t force things. I think there would be a lot more success stories if there was just a little more room to breathe. I know the more I was pushed, the more defenses I had up. I was having feelings for him, and my heart was opening up to him, but sometimes I felt pushed, and I’m like, ‘You guys, just give me a minute here. Let me breathe. Let me process this.’”

She continues, “Because you’re dealing with something very fragile, and that’s people’s hearts. Nobody wants to get their heart broken. At this age, a lot of us have had our hearts broken not once but twice or maybe three times. Let’s back up and give us time. I think they would get a lot more authenticity and connection if they did that.”

‘Golden Bachelor’ Gerry Turner’s New Memoir in 10 Sentences

by jummy84 November 5, 2025
written by jummy84

On Nov. 6, Gerry Turner, the 72-year-old bachelor from the first season of ABC’s The Golden Bachelor will release his memoir, Golden Years: What I’ve Learned From Love, Loss, and Reality TV.

Turner found himself on the show after his wife of nearly 45 years died suddenly and unexpectedly in 2017, and his two adult daughters suggested he apply to the show in 2020. The pandemic paused casting and other efforts to launch the series, but filming finally began in 2023.

Fans of the show may remember that Turner, a retired restaurateur, gave his golden rose to Theresa Nist, a 70-year-old financial services professional from New Jersey. The two married shortly after the finale aired in November 2023. Then, in another twist, they divorced after just three months of marriage in early 2024.

Say what you will about Turner’s aw-shucks, Midwestern ways (or the fact that his past may not be exactly as he claims), but the season was a hit for ABC, and the most watched of the Bachelor franchise since 2021. Time and again, audiences responded strongly to the depiction of seniors (especially older women) dating and finding love.

Turner’s memoir is mostly a retelling of his experience leading up to, during, and then shortly after taping of the show. The book reveals new details and slightly different versions of what viewers saw on TV, but ultimately, the sections sure to be most talked about relate to what took place afterwards, in which he badmouths his short-lived flame while lavishing praise on the show’s runner-up.

Here are ten of the book’s most illuminating passages:

On The Death Of His Wife

“Suddenly, shockingly, out of nowhere, the love of my life, my partner in all things for the last forty three years, was gone.”

Within a month of selling their Iowa home and retiring to a small, lakeside town in Indiana, Toni Turner’s health deteriorated quickly and she died of a kidney infection a few months shy of her 65th birthday. It’s later revealed that Toni had hidden from Gerry a Type-2 Diabetes diagnosis, which may have led to her death. Whatever the cause, Toni is brought up throughout the book, and her memory is clearly an inspiration and solace for Gerry.

On Fame And Representation

“Hey, man, I wanted to wish you luck,” he said. “You’re representing the men of America in this. It’s awesome to see you on TV, and I hope you find love.”

At an In-N-Out in Los Angeles, a man recognizes Turner and gives him his support. It’s a reprise that runs throughout the memoir.

On The Runner-Up

“The real red flag for me was her romantic history.”

Turner ultimately gave Theresa Nist the golden rose and the two married (if briefly). But the decision came down to Nist and Leslie Fhima. Turner claims that Fhima’s two previous divorces were a major red flag and one of the biggest reasons she didn’t win. Yet, Fhima is still in Turner’s life, while Nist…not so much.

On Meeting The Kardashians

“Kris and one of her daughters met me at the front door — if you can call it that — but I don’t know which one of them she was.”

During publicity for The Golden Bachelor, Turner made an appearance on Hulu’s The Kardashians. While Kendall Jenner says she’s a fan of The Bachelor franchise, Turner can’t return the compliment. He doesn’t know their names, who they are, etc. However, Turner reveals that, off camera, Kris Jenner asked him about getting hearing aids, and the two had a human moment about “the normal wear and tear on a person’s body at our age.”

On Pre-Nups and Cold Feet

“Two days before the wedding, I got a frantic call from my lawyer saying the document was not executable. One of her signatures was missing.”

With the cameras and the excitement gone, Turner admits that the strain of a long-distance relationship (forced to stay under wraps by the show’s producers) made him second-guess his decision to marry Nist. When Turner asked Nist (who works in finance) to sign a pre-nup, she initially balked at the request. When she finally relented, Nist missed some signatures, giving Turner pause.

On Consummating The Marriage

“My first night at her house, she took out sheets and pillows before telling me, ‘Tomorrow’s a big workday. I need a good night’s sleep. Do you mind sleeping on the sofa?’”

About a week after their wedding, Turner claims he drove from his home in Indiana to Nist’s home in New Jersey. Not only was he surprised by how small her house was (he claims she uses her stovetop as a vanity because — amongst other things — the lack of space), but was sensing a gap growing between them. That distance was most notable in their lack of physical intimacy.

On Ending Things

“Sitting about six feet from Theresa on a stone bench, I turned to her and asked, ‘So is it time to just call it quits?’”

Turner’s retelling of where and when he and Nist decided to end their marriage might seem a little too polished for some, leading to more questions than answers. As he writes, the two were spending time apart in their respective homes, then reunited in LA for Joey Graziadei’s “After The Final Rose” episode. Returning to their hotel, the newlyweds found a secluded bench, had a talk, and decided to divorce after only three months together. Was it really that easy and clean?

On Cancer And Post-Divorce

“…to be that insignificant to someone I had married, albeit briefly, was very painful. We no longer talk; we have no reason to.”

Shortly after his divorce from Nist, Turner was diagnosed with a rare form of bone marrow cancer. He informed several friends and even some of the women from The Golden Bachelor, but the response he claims he got from Nist was muted and she only followed up with him a few times before they completely stopped talking.

On Questioning Motives

“There was something about the image of Theresa curled up on one of the couches, planning her strategy to win a rose, that made me feel sick to my stomach.”

In the aftermath of his brief marriage to Nist, Turner learns from multiple other contestants on the show that Nist was reading a book called “The Secret to Finding Love and Fame on America’s Favorite Reality Show.” As he claims, it made him completely question Nist’s motives for being on The Golden Bachelor and why she ever decided to marry him. Ouch.

On The Lingering Leslie Question

“Although I hate to admit it, every time I think about Leslie, I still get emotional.”

Turns out it should have been Leslie Fhima after all? According to Turner, he and Fhima saw each other during a taping of Celebrity FamilyFeud. After the show, the two had a quiet moment together that must have been electric enough for Fhima to say to Turner, “You still got it for me?” The two still regularly talk, though Turner claims they are just good friends. Then again, isn’t that the basis of all great loves?

Jenn Tran & Devin Strader

Status: Split

During the season 21 finale of The Bachelorette, it looked like The Bachelor alum Jenn Tran was finally getting her happy ending with her final pick Devin Strader. But Jenn revealed on After the Final Rose back in September 2024 that Devin gave her the cold shoulder as soon as the cameras stopped rolling.

“He was making bold proclamations of love and then suddenly the next day he was like, nothing and he denied ever being in love,” Jenn told host Jesse Palmer during the Sept. 3 episode. “All the promises he had made to me, all of the love that he had wanted to give to me wasn’t there anymore.”

Drama continued to play out when Devin shared a 13-minute video recounting his side of the story to Instagram, where in addition to taking “accountability” he shared insight into why he ended the relationship in a 15-minute phone call.

While Jenn alleged he dumped her during the call in August, he claimed that Jenn demanded to know what was wrong as he tried to find a way to break the news in person.

“I didn’t really know what else to do,” he explained, noting he had been waiting to tell her in person. “She kind of forced my hand.”

After that, Jenn waltzed over to Dancing With the Stars and into the heart of her partner Sasha Farber. The duo continued to dance together even after their October 2024 elimination, but split in 2025.

Golden Bachelor Mel Owens Admits He Had High Expectations of Women

Golden Bachelor Mel Owens Admits He Had High Expectations of Women

by jummy84 October 30, 2025
written by jummy84

After Mel Owens filmed the Golden Bachelor reunion special and sat down to chat with reporters, he had one request. “Be nice to me!” he asked, earnestly.

But really, Owens had already faced his toughest critics when, on the first night of the second season of ABC‘s senior-aged spinoff series of The Bachelor, the 66-year-old former NFL player turned lawyer had to atone for some off-putting comments he made on a podcast shortly before filming began.

For the first time on the long-running reality TV dating competition, the classic first night — when the lead meets all of the women or men who will compete for their coveted final rose — was filled with more than just over-the-top limo entrances and awkward pull asides. There was also a lot of apologizing.

Almost one by one, the group of 60-and-over female contestants took Owens to task for saying on that podcast that if the women are “60 or over, I’m cutting them.” He added, “This is not The Silver Bachelor, this is The Golden Bachelor.”

But Owens was, again, earnestly apologetic when he owned up to what he said, as he offered up several apologies and asked the women to give him a second chance, which they soon did. Now, weeks after that Sept. 24 premiere, he faced the group again but in a different format — instead of on the driveway of the Bachelor mansion, he met them face-to-face on an ABC stage to film the Women Tell All reunion show, which aired just two weeks before the season finale, when Owens could get engaged to one of his final two contestants.

“The expectations, obviously, were high going into this season,” Owens told The Hollywood Reporter, speaking after the reunion show and reflecting on his state of mind before filming began. “Because I knew about the franchise and how well it’s run, but my season exceeded expectations. I can’t speak about the other seasons, but my season did. I thought the women were great. They treated me well, and we had a wonderful time.”

Once the cameras started rolling, Owens has no regrets about how he handled himself. Judging his performance as a lead, Owens added, “Being vulnerable is discovering who you are, and how you feel as you go through the process. Sometimes that’s internal, even though you may not show it externally. But I grew from knowing all the women and our interactions. The women were diverse and from different backgrounds, and that was really appealing. They were from all over; they had kids and grandkids,” said the father of two. “It was really a truly unique experience.”

Owens’ final two contestants are Cindy, a 60-year-old retired biomedical engineer from Austin, Texas, and Peg, a 62-year-old retired firefighter and bomb tech from Las Vegas, Nev. Though he was mum on whether or not he finds love in the end, Owens and his exes agreed on one thing when they spoke to reporters, including THR, after the reunion taping — they believe this process works, and that you can find lasting love on the Golden Bachelor, despite what skeptics think.

“People are probably like, ‘Oh, it’s a show,’” said Carol, who eliminated herself over a lack of a connection with Owens before hometown dates. “Because guess what? If you can make friendships like I did with the women for the rest of your life, why can’t you fall in love with somebody for the rest of life in this short term process? I don’t believe you have to know someone forever to fall in love.”

And while most of the women were hesitant about returning to the franchise via summer spinoff series Bachelor in Paradise, all of them were open to the idea of becoming the next Golden Bachelorette.

“I really want to get married. I’ll be 65 next month so that’s the year for me. I don’t have time to mess around,” said Nicolle, who stirred up drama this season and admitted she apologized to the first season’s Golden Bachelor contestants for some of her comments while mic’d.

Castoff Gerri, who received the first impression rose but was later eliminated, added, “The Bachelorette does all the hard work. All I’d have to do is pick between 23 men? How fun would that be?” While Debbie, who placed in the final three, admitted, “I didn’t even think they would consider me because I’ve never been married and never had kids. I am so ready now. After going through this experience and opening my heart, and knowing I’m capable of feeling these things again, I miss it. I want a companion.”

Cheryl, who was eliminated in week five, agreed. “Mel was the one that that I was falling in love with and was hoping to take a journey with him,” she said. “That didn’t happen, and it was heavy on my heart. But I’m hopeful I’m going to find somebody.”

Whoever gets picked to lead the next cycle — which has yet to be officially renewed following Joan Vassos’ inaugural season in 2024 — the women all said they are prepared for the grueling production requirements after sharing tight quarters in the mansion and filming around the clock on Owens’ season, including a first night that didn’t wrap until long after the sun came up.

“Filming is nonstop. From morning until night, you’re on, which I didn’t know,” admits Carol. “I thought, ‘Is it lunchtime yet? I have to put makeup on again today?’ You have to have some stamina, that’s for sure, but it’s fantastic. If anyone is out there wants to do this process, I believe in it, I really do. I believe you can find love. It was all worth it.”

The Golden Bachelor releases new episodes Wednesdays at 9 p.m. on ABC, streaming the next day on Hulu.

According to Celebrity Net Worth, Mel’s salary increased throughout the 1990s with an annual income of around $300,000. By that time, he’d already left the NFL and took up different business ventures. What Happened With Mel Owens’ Ex-Wife Before The Golden Bachelor?

Mel was married to his ex-wife, Fabiana Pimentel, a Brazilian businesswoman whom he called his “first love.” The couple share two sons, and they lived in California while they were together.

In February 2020, Fabiana filed for divorce and cited irreconcilable differences, according to court documents viewed by Hollywood Life. It took nearly five years for them to finalize their divorce with their split being final in December 2024. The court ordered Mel to pay about $1 million for unpaid child and spousal support, property division and attorney fees, according to multiple outlets.

Ahead of the season 2 Golden Bachelor premiere, Fabiana was asked by Daily Mail how she felt about her ex-husband’s participation on the show.

“Good luck. I mean, it’s going to be bad,” Fabiana told the outlet, adding, “But anyway, I don’t want to be involved in this.”

During an interview with Us Weekly, Mel said Fabiana filed for divorce from him after falling in love with another person.

Well, it’s never good, right? But, you know, I’m never going to get in the way of someone’s happiness,” Mel told the outlet. “If you want to find somebody else in a different phase in your life — it hurts — but I can’t get in the way of your happiness. And what’s your happiness may not be my happiness. That’d be a real conflict — you can’t stop somebody, say, ‘I’m over here now.’ You can beg and plead, but I’m fine. Life is short, and if you’re in love with somebody else, that’s fine.”

‘Golden Bachelor’ Season 2 Cast Revealed

by jummy84 September 4, 2025
written by jummy84

The Golden Bachelor is revving up for its return.

The senior-aged spinoff of The Bachelor that had everyone talking when it launched in 2023 is back with its second season on Sept. 24, and ABC has released the full cast for when Mel Owens takes his turn handing out those red roses.

One of the highlights of Golden Bachelor season one was seeing the empowering women who came on national television looking for a second or perhaps third chance at love breakout to stardom, and a teaser (below) shows that this new batch of hopefuls in their golden years are just as impressive.

The reality dating series will have 23 women vying for Owens’ affection. Owens is a 66-year-old dad of two sons and former NFL player turned lawyer who played college football for the University of Michigan Wolverines, followed by a nine-year NFL career as a linebacker with the Los Angeles Rams. He is the second Golden Bachelor star in the Warner Bros.-produced franchise, following Gerry Turner in season one and Joan Vassos leading the inaugural season of the Golden Bachelorette. Several Golden franchise castmembers also joined this summer’s spinoff series, Bachelor in Paradise.

Owens made a stir earlier this summer when he said his desired range for the women on his season was under 60; he later spoke out about the stumble, saying the first thing he did when he began production on the upcoming season was to apologize to his female cast.

“I said, ‘It was unfair, insensitive. I want to earn it back. Just give me the chance,’” he said, adding that many of the women accepted his apology. But “one of the dates was a roast,” he added. “It was brutal. They were killing me… They’re brilliant. It’s shocking how brilliant they are.”

Among the 23 women who were hand-picked by ABC’s casting department to prove that “love stories don’t end with age, they only get better” are a Napa Valley vineyard owner, fitness professional, retired biomedical engineer, a CEO, librarian, former model, and a retired firefighter and bomb tech.

Here they are — pictured above and detailed below:

Alexandra, 67, a luxury yacht sales representative from Miami, Fla.
Amy, 63, a full-time mom from Short Hills, N.J.
Andra, 77, a retired federal worker from Los Angeles, Calif.
Carla, 62, a former model from Los Angeles, Calif.
Carol, 63, family manager for baseball all-star Freddie Freeman from Villa Park, Calif.
Cheryl, 66, a retired IRS employee from Englewood, Colo.
Cindy, 60, a retired biomedical engineer from Austin, Texas.
Debbie, 65, a fitness professional from Denver, Colo.
Diane, 71, a librarian from Wasilla, Alaska
Gerri, 64, a home care agency CEO from Rockville, Md.
Lily, 72, a retired elementary school teacher from Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Lisa, 66, a state park employee from Marion, Ohio.
Maia, 58, a college sports consultant from Malibu, Calif.
Monica B., 62, a flight attendant from Huntsville, Ala.
Monica P., 60, a cosmetic dentist from Birmingham, Ala.
Mylene, 61, a casino VIP host from Las Vegas, Nev.
Nicolle, 64, a yoga instructor from Miami Beach, Fla.
Peg, 62, a retired firefighter and bomb tech from Las Vegas, Nev.
Robin, 63, a wealth advisor/vineyard owner from Napa Valley, Calif.
Roxanne, 62, a longevity nurse from Austin, Texas
Susie, 62, a realtor from Del Mar, Calif.
Terri, 71, a cosmetic dentist from Houston, Texas
Tracy, 62, an interior designer from Lafayette, La.

The Golden Bachelor returns Wednesday, Sept. 24 (8:00-10:00 p.m.) on ABC, streaming next day on Hulu.

The season will be hosted by returning star Jesse Palmer and is produced by Warner Horizon Unscripted Television, a Warner Bros. Television Group company. Jessica Castro and Andrew Frank are executive producers, with Jessica Castro as showrunner.
