A massive internet outage sent shockwaves across the web on October 20, 2025, after Amazon Web Services (AWS) suffered a widespread disruption that affected some of the world’s most-used apps and platforms. The glitch began in the early morning hours, when AWS reported increased “error rates and latencies” across its network, impacting everything from smart home devices to creative and communication tools.

As a result, major apps like Canva, Snapchat, Reddit, Ring, and even parts of Amazon’s own site went offline, leaving millions of users unable to log in or load content. The outage also affected other major services that rely on AWS, including Fortnite, Slack, and Venmo, highlighting just how dependent the internet has become on Amazon’s cloud infrastructure.

Below, find out which apps went down, what caused the outage, and when your favorite platforms came back online.

What Apps Went Down During Today’s Internet Outage?

Dozens of major platforms were hit by the massive internet outage on October 20, 2025, after AWS experienced its system-wide failure. Apps like Snapchat, Canva, Reddit, Venmo, Fortnite, Ring, and even parts of Amazon itself went offline for hours.

Over six million outage reports were logged globally as users struggled to access essential apps for work, communication, and entertainment.

Is Snapchat Fixed?

Yes. Snapchat has largely recovered following the AWS disruption. The app was one of the first major platforms to experience issues, with users unable to send snaps or refresh their feeds.

Is Canva Back Up?

Canva, one of the many services powered by AWS, was hit hard during the outage but has since returned online for most users. The company reported that its teams had restored functionality to the majority of accounts by noon and were monitoring for any lingering issues. Some users may still notice occasional slow loading times when opening designs or uploading media, but the platform’s core features are up and running again.

Was the AWS Outage Fixed?

Amazon confirmed that the root cause of the outage — a DNS-related issue in its US-EAST-1 region — was mostly resolved by 6:35 a.m. ET. The company said most AWS operations had “returned to normal,” though some customers might continue to experience throttled requests or minor delays as systems clear backlogs.

Did Reddit Go Down?

Yes, Reddit was among the platforms affected by the AWS outage. During the height of the disruption, users reported being unable to load posts, browse threads, or comment.

When Will the Ring Cameras Be Fixed?

Most Ring devices are back online following the AWS recovery. The outage had temporarily disabled live feeds, notifications, and access to recordings for many users since Ring’s infrastructure depends on AWS servers.

When Will Amazon Be Back Up? AWS Outage Update Today – Hollywood Life

Amazon Web Services (AWS) suffered from a widespread outage today, October 20, 2025, and it has impacted countless online platforms. From airline setbacks to banking issues, the problem has impacted millions of online users around the world, mostly in the United States and the United Kingdom. As Amazon users wonder when it will be back up and running, get an update on when its services should be full restored below.

Why Is Amazon Down Today? The AWS Outage Reason

Amazon identified the root cause of its outage as an “underlying DNS issue.” A DNS is a Domain Name System, which is a sort of internet phone book that converts domain names into IP addresses.

“The underlying DNS issue has been fully mitigated, and most AWS Service operations are succeeding normally now,” Amazon wrote in an update on its health dashboard at 6:35 a.m. ET. “Some requests may be throttled while we work toward full resolution. Additionally, some services are continuing to work through a backlog of events such as Cloudtrail and Lambda. While most operations are recovered, requests to launch new EC2 instances (or services that launch EC2 instances such as ECS) in the US-EAST-1 Region are still experiencing increased error rates. We continue to work toward full resolution. If you are still experiencing an issue resolving the DynamoDB service endpoints in US-EAST-1, we recommend flushing your DNS caches.”

Just after 1:00 p.m. ET, Amazon’s heath dashboard announced it would keeping applying “mitigation steps for network load balancer health and recovering connectivity for most AWS services.”

Is AWS Still Down?

Some Amazon services are still down for countless users at the time of publication. For many, the “orders” section of the Amazon app has a message that reads, “Hmm. We’re still having trouble showing your orders because something isn’t working.”

The rest of the Amazon app has similar messages across its home screen, indicating that updates are not currently possible to load amid the outage.

When Will Amazon Be Back Up?

The Amazon outage could be over by the end of the day on October 20, but the company insisted that the main issued had been “mitigated.” According to Graeme Bragg, a computer networking expert from the University of Southampton, though, the problem could persist for “the rest of the day.”

“This morning, an issue affecting Amazon’s US East caused significant disruption, with the underlying cause attributed to a problem with DNS – the ‘phone book’ of the internet that helps computers find each other,” Bragg said, per The Independent. “This has affected lots of services hosted in different regions because Amazon host a lot of their management infrastructure that other services depend on in that region.”

Noting that the shutdown is a “significant outage because of how many companies rely on Amazon and the global scale of the impact,” Bragg added, “The underlying issue has now been resolved but it will take some time to propagate across the internet. Amazon’s servers also have a backlog of requests to work through, so it’s likely that we will see some disruption for the rest of the day.”

What Other Apps Were Affected by the AWS Outage?

Multiple apps and other online platforms were impacted amid the AWS outage, including Venmo, Snapchat, the Ring Doorbell, Asana and even the airline companies, Delta and United.

Venmo customers are not thrilled with the payment platform’s recent outage. Countless users reported problems loading their Venmo apps on October 20, 2025, and the company addressed the situation in a statement. Now the question remains: when will the system be back up?

Below, find out when you can expect Venmo to start working again.

Why Isn’t Venmo Working Today?

Apparently, Venmo users were reporting problems with the system as early as October 16, 2025 — four days before the AWS outage affects multiple online platforms. Venmo acknowledged the situation on October 20 in a message that read, “Come back soon, Venmo is currently encountering a disruption due to a cloud provider partner service issue. We apologize for the inconvenience and are working to restore access as soon as possible.”

It appears that Venmo — and various other online platforms and apps — is not working due to the AWS outage.

When Will Venmo Be Back Up?

At the time of publication, Venmo users are still reporting a problem accessing the app. Venmo has not provided an estimated restoration time for its platform. In its October 20 message, the company advised users to “come back soon.”

Since Amazon is still trying to “mitigate” its problem, Venmo might be down or experiencing issues for most of the day on October 20. According to Graeme Bragg, a computer networking expert from the University of Southampton, the situation with Amazon could last “for the rest of the day.”

“The underlying issue has now been resolved but it will take some time to propagate across the internet,” Bragg said, according to The Independent. Amazon’s servers also have a backlog of requests to work through, so it’s likely that we will see some disruption for the rest of the day.”

Bragg pointed out that in the morning of October 20, Amazon’s U.S. East “caused significant disruption, with the underlying cause attributed to a problem with DNS – the ‘phone book’ of the internet that helps computers find each other. This has affected lots of services hosted in different regions because Amazon host a lot of their management infrastructure that other services depend on in that region. This is a significant outage because of how many companies rely on Amazon and the global scale of the impact.”

Who Owns Venmo?

PayPal owns Venmo. Despite the fact that Amazon’s widespread outage is apparently causing mass confusion, the company does not oversee Venmo.

October 20, 2025, Major Internet Outage Updates: Inside the AWS Problem

Amazon discovered that the cause of its outage was from an “underlying DNS issue.” A DNS is a Domain Name System: a sort of internet phone book that converts domain names into IP addresses.

“The underlying DNS issue has been fully mitigated, and most AWS Service operations are succeeding normally now,” Amazon said on one of its AWS dashboards. “Some requests may be throttled while we work toward full resolution. Additionally, some services are continuing to work through a backlog of events such as Cloudtrail and Lambda.”

After 1:00 p.m. ET, Amazon’s heath dashboard noted it would keeping applying “mitigation steps for network load balancer health and recovering connectivity for most AWS services.”
